The Healthiest Children’s Vitamins: 2018
Note: I update this post monthly to ensure all of the information is accurate! The original post was created in 2017, but the most recent update has been done as of August 2018. If you’re looking for the best adult vitamins, go to this post.
Kids Vitamins can be confusing. There are so many questions: Is there a such thing as an “unhealthy” kids vitamin? Do you need a vitamin with iron? Which vitamins are the best? Do kids even need vitamins at all?
.
Recently, I was talking with a friend and realized that a lot of these questions can be really overwhelming because there is so much information out there! So I did a bunch of research and found the healthiest kids vitamins out there today. This is your guide to multivitamins for kids: what to buy, what not to buy, and what to look out for!
.
So first of all, do kids even need vitamins to begin with?
Most pediatricians will tell you that it’s not necessary for most healthy children who are growing normally (source). For kids who eat well and eat a variety of food, they can get all of the nutrients they need from whole foods. But many kids are very picky, or don’t eat a lot of food, or aren’t growing well, and that makes a lot of parents worried that they aren’t getting the nutrients they need! In those cases, I’d recommend talking to your pediatrician, and if they suggest giving your child a multivitamin then definitely do so.
.
When buying a multivitamin, what should you look for?
So to start, kids multivitamins generally come in two groups: 1) With Iron and 2) Without Iron. You should buy a multivitamin that doesn’t exceed 100% daily value of most of the vitamins for your child’s age group – primarily Vitamins A, E and K (that will be indicated by the label on the back). The exception here is for Vitamin C and other water-soluble vitamins. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin but is ok to have at more than 100% of the daily value because most people are deficient (including kids) and Vitamin D isn’t toxic unless it’s in exceptionally high doses which wouldn’t be in a daily vitamin. If the vitamin does have more than 100% of A, E and K then I would just give your child half the dose on the bottle.
It’s also important to look for the ingredients that are added to the tablet that aren’t vitamins. Ingredients like: Sorbitol, carrageenan, artificial colors and flavors (Red #40 anyone?), aspartame, sucralose, to name a few! You definitely don’t want to be dosing your child with these ingredients on a daily basis along with their multivitamin.
.
So let’s start with what not to buy:  The answer here is most of the commercially available, leading brands of multivitamins. The biggest offender of which is Flinstones Chewable Vitamins.
What’s crazy is that on the label, Flinstones calls out that they are “Pediatrician’s #1 Choice.” And most people do buy Flinstones vitamins! I even remember eating them when I was a kid. They tasted so good! It was like a treat every morning. And if you are giving your kids Flinstones vitamins right now, don’t feel bad! You are not alone, and thanks to all of the deceptive marketing out there, there’s no way you’d know that Flinstones isn’t the best choice for any child. Before doing all of this research I didn’t realize how problematic they were, and why it’s important to switch away from them.
.
The reason they are problematic, is because there are a ridiculous number of offensive ingredients in Flinstones Vitamins that truly, should not be there at all, and are not necessary. Take a look at two of their best sellers (I’ve highlighted in red all of the ingredients to avoid):
.
Sorbitol, Mannitol, Fructose, Sodium Ascorbate, Ferrous Fumarate, Silicon Dioxide, Carrageenan, Natural and Artificial Flavors, FD&C Red #40 Lake; Less Than 2% Of: Aspartame†, BetaCarotene, Cholecalciferol, Cyanocobalamin, D-Calcium Pantothenate, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, FD&C Blue #2 Lake, FD&C Yellow #6 Lake, Folic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Niacinamide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Soy Lecithin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Acetate.
Granulated Calcium Carbonate (Calcium Carbonate, Dextrose Monohydrate, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Microcrystalline Cellulose), Sorbitol, Sodium Ascorbate, Ferrous Fumarate, Natural and Artificial Flavoring, Pregelatinized Starch, dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate; Less Than 2% Of: Beta-Carotene, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Cholecalciferol, Cupric Oxide, Cyanocobalamin, FD&C Blue #2 Lake, FD&C Red #40 Lake, FD&C Yellow #6 Lake, Folic Acid, Gelatin, Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Stearate, Mono- and Diglycerides, Niacinamide, Potassium Iodide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Phytonadione, Riboflavin, Silicon Dioxide, Soy Lecithin, Sucralose, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Acetate, Zinc Oxide.
.
Let’s take these one by one:
Sorbitol and Mannitol are sugar alcohols. They have been known to cause digestive issues and discomfort in some people because they can’t be digested properly by the body.
Carrageenan is an emulsifier that thickens products, but it has been linked to high levels of inflammation in the body, digestive issues, etc.
Maltodextrin: this is an indicator that the food is highly processed. It’s used as a thickener, filler, or preservative in many processed foods, and it can cause spikes in your blood sugar because it has a high glycemic index.
Natural and Artificial Colors – Red #40, Blue #2, Yellow #6. I mean, #wtf. What are these doing in a kids vitamin? These are so problematic and have been linked to all kinds of health problems including allergies, hyperactivity, learning impairment, irritability and aggressiveness.
Artificial flavors – also highly processed and unnecessary in a kids vitamin.
Aspartame and Sucralose – this is what diet sodas are sweetened with, and are highly controversial. Research hasn’t proven one way or the other whether they lead to long term health issues, but it has been proven that they cause an insulin-response by the body (because your body thinks you are eating sugar when you are not – source). If you wouldn’t give your child a diet coke, you shouldn’t give them a vitamin with this in it!
Mono- and Diglycerides is one of the most widely used emulsifers to keep oil and fat from separating. It’s just an indicator that the food is processed.
Oh, and gelatin. While this isn’t a harmful ingredient, it kind of sucks for any vegetarians or vegans out there who are giving their kids this vitamin without knowing that it’s not actually veggie-friendly.
So what should you buy instead? What’s the healthiest multivitamin out there?
Luckily there are tons of options! Below is a list of my favorites: they all are made with natural ingredients, have no weird preservatives or any of the ingredients above added, and some even derive the vitamins from organic food sources which I absolutely love because they are better absorbed by the body that way. Most of these will have a tiny bit of cane sugar or fructose added, but as long as it’s less than 4g per serving it’s not a huge issue.
Note: ALL of the vitamins I recommend below do NOT contain gelatin. They are all vegetarian friendly!
With Iron:
Without Iron:
Garden of Life – While it doesn’t have iron, I do love this brand. I take their women’s multivitamin daily and I love it. All of their vitamins come from organic whole foods, and they don’t have anything weird added to their vitamins. They are organic, clean, and healthy. There is stevia added here, but it’s listed as “Organic Stevia Leaf” – which is the only form of Stevia I’m ok with. What I do avoid is “stevia extract” could literally mean anything and have anything added to it.
Garden of Life Gummy Vitamin
MegaFood – This is another brand that I love for vitamins. It doesn’t have iron but if you decide to go with this or Garden of Life, there is an iron-only supplement you can add to their diets!
Mega Foods Kids Daily Multivitamin Booster – a powdered form of their vitamin.
OLLY Kids Super Foods Multivitamin
Zarbees Toddler Multivitamin
Pure Encapsulations
Liquid Vitamins Without Iron:
ChildLife – it’s a little higher in sugar than I’d like, but you can start using it at 6 months of age (the other two options are for older kids)
Children’s Advanced – no sugar added and you can use it starting at 1 year of age
Premium Children’s – no sugar added and you can use it starting at 4 years of age
Iron Only Supplement: This is a good option if you decide to buy Garden of Life or MegaFood, because it will add the iron missing from those vitamins back into your child’s diet.
For Omega 3s: The only Omega 3 supplement I’d recommend for kids is Nordic Naturals. They have an infant DHA supplement and a children’s DHA supplement – both of which are extremely pure, has no added preservatives or sugar, and are in liquid form so they can be added to just about anything!
For Vitamin D: If you’re just looking for a Vitamin D supplement – e.g. in the winter, I love (and use) these Vitamin D Drops. There is literally nothing added to them (no flavors, colors, etc.). They are liquid and you only need one drop in your child’s milk per day. They’re marketed for infants, but you can use them for any age. Super easy, tasteless and pure. For another great option, UpSpring makes a pure vitamin D with only coconut oil added.
For Probiotics: I love Garden of Life’s line of probiotics – they are shipped cold and their powdered kids probiotic can be added to your child’s drink (milk, water, etc.). They also have a kids’ chewable probiotic if you need an option that doesn’t require refrigeration (but it does have maltodextrin).
Runner Ups:
Solgar. This is one I’d get only if you can’t find any of the other ones on the list above, because while most of the ingredients are good, it does have carrageenan which – as I mentioned – it’s better to avoid.
YummiBears Organic Multivitamin (note: this vitamin does have cane sugar added – if you give your kids the full dose then it’s 6g sugar which is more than I would like in a vitamin)
Seeking Health (Note: The link may say women’s/mens but the label indicates this can be used for kids aged 4 and up. It’s also good for kids with MTHFR mutations. But I am waiting for a response from the company on the prop 65 warning on its label, so I’ve moved them down here for now!)
I hope this helps you in navigating the world of kids’ vitamins!

Herbalife Diet Review: Does It Work for Weight Loss
Herbalife is a multi-level marketing company that sells nutritional supplements and personal care products in more than 90 countries around the world.
One of their products is the Herbalife weight loss program, which uses meal replacement shakes and dietary supplements to help people slim down.
While quick-fix diets like the Herbalife program can help people lose weight in the short term, they can be expensive and may not be sustainable.
This article reviews the pros and cons of the Herbalife diet program to help you decide whether it might work for you.
Overall score: 3
Fast weight loss: 4
Long-term weight loss: 2
Easy to follow: 4
Nutrition quality: 2
BOTTOM LINE: The Herbalife diet is pricy and involves highly processed shakes and many supplements, some of which have been linked to adverse health effects. Short-term use likely causes weight loss, but long-term effectiveness is yet to be studied.
Getting started on the Herbalife diet requires a few simple steps.
Step 1: Connect With an Herbalife Independent Distributor
Since Herbalife is a multi-level marketing business, their products are only available for purchase through Herbalife independent distributors.
You can connect with a distributor directly on the Herbalife website or via personal connections if you know a certified retailer.
Step 2: Choose Your Weight Loss Program
The next step is to pick the Herbalife weight loss program that’s right for you. There are three versions to choose from:
The Quickstart Program: Includes meal-replacement shakes, a powdered tea drink, a multivitamin/mineral (MVM) and a metabolism-boosting supplement.
The Advanced Program: Includes everything from the Quickstart Program, plus two more supplements for increasing energy and reducing fluid retention.
The Ultimate Program: Includes everything from the Advanced Program, plus two additional supplements for blood sugar management and digestion.
These programs range in price from roughly $150–275 per month.
Step 3: Begin the Herbalife Diet
Following the Herbalife diet is relatively easy.
Simply replace two meals each day with Herbalife shakes and take the supplements that come with the program you purchased.
There are no dietary restrictions on the Herbalife diet, but it’s generally advised to drink plenty of water and eat small, frequent meals and snacks that include plenty of fruits and vegetables.
There are no official recommendations for how long you should stay on the Herbalife diet, but most people continue until they reach their weight loss goal.
Summary To get started on the Herbalife program, simply connect with an Herbalife distributor, purchase the program of your choice and start consuming the shakes and supplements.
The Herbalife diet is designed to help people lose weight by reducing calorie intake with meal replacement shakes and boosting metabolism with supplements.
There have not been any studies on the full Herbalife weight loss program, but the meal replacement shakes do appear to help with weight loss.
Herbalife Meal Replacement Shakes
Each serving (two scoops or 25 grams) of the Herbalife meal replacement shake mix contains (1):
Calories: 90
Fat: 1 g
Carbohydrates: 13 g
Fiber: 3 g
Sugar: 9 g
Protein: 9 g
When mixed with 8 fluid ounces (240 ml) of nonfat milk, the mix provides 170 calories per serving and is intended to be a low-calorie meal replacement.
In general, meal replacement shakes can help people lose weight when used for up to one year (2, 3).
In fact, research suggests that they may be more effective for short-term weight loss than traditional low-calorie diets (4).
Only one study, which was sponsored by Herbalife, has tested the effectiveness of Herbalife shakes specifically.
This study found that people who replaced two meals per day with Herbalife shakes lost an average 12.5 pounds (5 kg) in 12 weeks (5).
Research is lacking on the long-term benefits of meal replacement shakes, but at least one study suggested that they may help prevent weight gain over several years (6).
A second study found that people who used meal replacement shakes for three months before transitioning to a low-calorie diet weighed less after four years than those who only dieted (7).
Overall, research suggests that meal replacement shakes can help people lose weight in the short term, but additional diet and lifestyle strategies may be needed for long-term weight loss and weight maintenance.
Herbalife Supplements
The supplements recommended in the Herbalife weight loss programs include:
Formula 2 Multivitamin: A standard multivitamin with several minerals for general nutrition.
Formula 3 Cell Activator: A supplement with alpha-lipoic acid, aloe vera, pomegranate, rhodiola, pine bark and resveratrol that claims to support nutrient absorption, metabolism and mitochondrial health.
Herbal Tea Concentrate: A powdered drink mix with tea extracts and caffeine that is meant to provide extra energy and antioxidant support.
Total Control: A supplement containing caffeine, ginger, three kinds of tea (green, black and oolong) and pomegranate rind that claims to boost energy.
Cell-U-Loss: A supplement containing electrolytes, corn silk extract, parsley, dandelion and asparagus root that is meant to reduce water retention.
Snack Defense: A supplement containing chromium and Gymnema sylvestre extract that claims to support carbohydrate metabolism.
Aminogen: A supplement containing protease enzymes, which are said to improve protein digestion.
While these supplements contain many ingredients and claim to help with energy, metabolism and weight loss, there have been no studies to prove their effectiveness.
Additionally, supplements are not regulated by any government agency for quality or purity, so there is no guarantee that they contain the ingredients advertised.
Summary Replacing two meals per day with Herbalife shakes can lead to modest weight loss, but it’s unknown whether the supplements that are part of the program have any additional benefit.
In addition to aiding weight loss, the Herbalife program has a few more benefits.
It’s Easy and Convenient
Meal replacement shakes like the ones used in the Herbalife diet can be attractive for busy people or those who lack the time or interest to cook.
To make the shake, all you have to do is mix two scoops of powder with 8 ounces (240 ml) of nonfat milk and enjoy. The powder can also be blended with ice or fruit for a smoothie-style drink.
Drinking shakes instead of cooking can dramatically cut down on time spent planning, shopping and preparing meals. The Herbalife program is also very easy to follow.
Soy-Based Shakes May Be Good for Your Heart
The main ingredient in most of the Herbalife meal replacement shakes is soy protein isolate, a type of protein powder that comes from soybeans.
Some research suggests that eating soy protein may lower cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease (8).
However, nearly 50 grams per day are needed to realize these effects (9, 10).
Two servings of Herbalife meal replacement shakes contain only 18 grams, so additional soy foods would need to be included in your diet (1).
A Soy-Free, Dairy-Free Formula Is Available
For those with allergies or sensitivities to soy or cow’s milk, Herbalife offers an alternative meal replacement shake made with pea, rice and sesame proteins (1).
This product is also made from non-genetically modified ingredients, for those who wish to avoid GMOs.
Summary The Herbalife diet is convenient and easy to follow, and the soy-based shakes may even help reduce your risk of heart disease. For those sensitive or allergic to soy or dairy, an alternative formula is available.
While the Herbalife diet program has some benefits, it also has quite a few downsides.
The Shakes Are Highly Processed
Herbalife meal replacement shakes are made with highly processed ingredients, such as protein isolates, sugars, gums, fibers, synthetic vitamins, artificial flavors and emulsifiers (1).
They also contain a variety of added vitamins and minerals to make up for the nutrients these processed ingredients lack.
One of the biggest drawbacks is that the shakes are very high in sugar — 40 percent of the calories in each serving come from added sugars, primarily fructose (1).
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends getting no more than 5% of your daily calories from added sugars, which equates to roughly 25 grams per day for the average adult (11).
Two servings of the Herbalife shake provide 18 grams of added sugar, leaving very little room for other sources throughout the day (1).
It’s generally advisable to get your nutrients from less processed foods, such as high-quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats.
They’re Not True Meal Replacements
Although Herbalife shakes are described as meal replacement shakes, they do not contain enough calories to constitute a true meal.
When mixed with nonfat milk, the shakes contain just 170 calories, which will likely leave you feeling very hungry throughout the day.
Blending the shake with fruit can help increase the calorie and fiber contents but won’t add any additional protein or fat to keep you satisfied.
It Can Be Expensive
Each container of Herbalife meal replacement mix contains 30 servings and costs just over $40.
Herbalife’s recommended two shakes per day equates to roughly $80 per month for the shakes alone, not including the cost of supplements.
While swapping meals for shakes may save you money on groceries, these savings may not be significant enough to justify the additional expense of smoothies and supplements.
Herbal Supplements May Cause Liver Damage
The Herbalife weight loss programs recommend several supplements that contain a myriad of ingredients.
These supplements have not been tested for effectiveness and are not regulated by any government agency for quality or purity.
It’s important to watch for signs of adverse reactions to supplements, as these can occur.
In fact, there have been several reports of liver damage due to Herbalife weight loss supplements, sometimes requiring liver transplants or even causing death (12, 13, 14, 15).
Additionally, some Herbalife products have been contaminated with an overgrowth of the bacteria B. subtilis, which is also linked to liver damage (16).
Keep in mind that adverse effects and liver damage can occur with many over-the-counter medications and supplements, and it’s unclear whether the risks associated with Herbalife products are any greater than those of other pills (13).
It’s Not Appropriate for Everyone
The Herbalife diet program is not appropriate for everyone.
People with allergies, sensitivities or intolerances to the ingredients in the shakes or supplements should not follow this program.
Since so many supplements are included, it’s important to check with your doctor to ensure they don’t interact with your medications or medical conditions.
Summary Herbalife shakes are expensive, highly processed and do not contain enough calories to be true meal replacements. The recommended supplements can also be dangerous for some people.
Though most of your meals will be shakes while on the Herbalife diet, you can have one regular meal and two small snacks of your choice each day.
Herbalife does not give detailed diet advice about what to eat aside from the shakes and supplements, so you can technically have whatever you want.
However, in order to promote weight loss, the Herbalife website recommends a diet rich in lean protein, fruits and vegetables, nonfat dairy, whole grains, legumes, nuts and healthy fats.
Summary Most of your meals on the Herbalife diet will be meal replacement shakes, but you also get one meal and two snacks of your choice each day. Focus on low-fat, low-calorie, minimally processed foods.
No foods are strictly forbidden on the Herbalife diet, but you should aim for low-calorie meals rich in lean protein, fruits and vegetables.
High-calorie or high-fat foods are allowed but should be enjoyed in moderation if you want to lose weight on the Herbalife diet.
Summary No foods are forbidden on the Herbalife diet, but items rich in fat or calories should be consumed in moderation if you desire weight loss.
Here is what one day on the Herbalife Ultimate weight loss program might look like:
Breakfast: Herbalife chocolate shake made with 8 ounces (240 ml) of nonfat milk and half a banana, plus the Formula 2 Multivitamin, Formula 3 Cell Activator, Total Control, Cell-U-Loss and Aminogen supplements.
Snack: One can of tuna and a small salad with the Snack Defense herbal tea concentrate and Aminogen supplement.
Lunch: Herbalife vanilla shake made with 8 ounces (240 ml) of skim milk and half a banana, plus the Formula 2 Multivitamin, Formula 3 Cell Activator, and Total Control, Cell-U-Loss and Aminogen supplements.
Snack: One piece of fruit with herbal tea concentrate and the Snack Defense supplement.
Dinner: Grilled chicken with vegetables and brown rice, plus the Formula 2 Multivitamin, Total Control and Aminogen supplements.
As you can see, the meals are quite simple — but there are a lot of supplements to take throughout the day.
Summary A sample menu for the Herbalife weight loss program includes two Herbalife shakes, one balanced meal of your choice and two snacks, plus many supplements.
In addition to the Herbalife shakes and supplements, you will purchase food from the grocery store for your remaining meals and snacks.
Some suggestions include:
Lean protein: Chicken, turkey, pork loin, fish, lamb or lean beef.
Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, frozen, dried or canned.
Nonfat or low-fat dairy products: Cow’s milk or non-dairy milk for the shakes, plus other low-fat or nonfat dairy items for snacking.
Whole grains and legumes: Including brown rice, beans, lentils, and quinoa.
Healthy oils: Olive oil, avocado oil or other oils from nuts and seeds.
Nuts and seeds: Raw, roasted or ground into flour or nut butter.
Foods that are highly processed or calorie- or fat-dense should be consumed in moderation.
Summary Choose your favorite high-protein, high-fiber and low-fat items from the grocery store for your additional meals and snacks.
The Herbalife diet comprises low-calorie meal replacement shakes and metabolism-boosting supplements.
It’s convenient, easy to follow and may aid short-term weight loss, though long-term success has not been studied.
Yet, it’s expensive, may cause side effects, and the safety and effectiveness of the supplements has not been researched.
More studies are needed to understand how pairing meal replacement shakes with longer-term diet and lifestyle changes affects weight loss and weight management.

What is HerbaLife Nutrition?
HerbaLife Nutrition is a global multi-level marketing company that produces and sells food products. The company was founded by Mark Hughes in 1980 and served 8,900 people worldwide.
HerbaLife Nutrition offers a personalized approach to daily nutritional and personal care products in more than 90 countries around the world.
Benefits of HerbaLife Products
In addition to helping with weight loss, the Herbalife program has some other benefits.
Soy-based shakes for heart:
The main ingredient in most Herbalife replacement shakes is soy protein. A protein powder derived from soybeans. Some research suggests that eating soy protein may lower your cholesterol level and reduce your heart disease risk.
However, it takes about 50 grams a day to realize these effects. Herbalife dietary alternative shakes contain only 18 grams in two dimensions, so extra soy foods should include in your diet.
Easy and convenient:
Dietary shakes used in the Herbalife diet may be attractive to those who are busy or who do not have the time or interest to cook.
To shake, all you have to do is mix two scoops of powder with 8 ounces (240 ml) of non-pot milk and enjoy. The powder can mix with ice or fruit for a soft style drink.
Drinking shakes instead of cooking can reduce the time spent on planning, shopping and preparing food. The Herbalife program is also elementary to follow.
A soy-free, milk-free formula:
Herbalife offers an alternative dietary milk-free formula shake made with peas, rice, and proteins for those who are allergic or sensitive to soy or cow’s milk.
For those who want to avoid GMOs, this product is also made from modified ingredients.
Side Effects of HerbaLife Nutrition Diet
While there are some benefits to the Herbalife plan, it also has some disadvantages and side effects.
It can make you Hungry:
Although HerbaLife shakes are described as food replacement shakes. They do not contain enough calories to make real food. When mixed with nonfat milk, there are only 170 calories in the shakes, which will keep you very hungry throughout the day.
Mixing shake with fruit will help increase calorie and fiber content but will not add extra protein or fat to your satisfaction.
Highly Processed Shakes:
Herbalife food made with highly processed ingredients such as, sugars, protein, fiber, synthetic vitamins, synthetic flavors and emulsifiers. They also contain various vitamins and minerals that make up the nutrients that these processed products lack.
One of the most significant drawbacks is that shakes are high in sugar. 40% of the calories in each serving come from added sugars, primarily fructose.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that you do not consume more than 5% of your daily calories from added sugars, equating to about 25 grams per day for the average adult.
Two servings of HerbaLife Shake provide 18 grams of extra sugar, leaving very little space for other sources throughout the day. It is generally advisable to get your nutrients from low-process foods such as high-quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats.
Herbalife can be Expensive:
They recommends two shakes a day for about $ 80 a month, including extra cost. Herbalife Diet Replacement Mixture contains 30 servings per container and costs over $ 40.
Switching diets for shakes can save you money on groceries, and these savings may not be significant enough to justify the extra cost of smoothies and additives.
Not Suitable for Everyone:
The Herlife plan is not suitable for everyone. People who are allergic, sensitive, or intolerant to the shake or supplements ingredients should not follow this plan. Because many supplements are added, it is essential to check with your healthcare provider to ensure they are not in contact with your medications or medical conditions.
Herbal Supplements can Cause Liver Damage:
HerbaLife Weight Loss Programs prescribe many supplements containing a myriad of ingredients. These supplements have not tested for effectiveness and are not regulated by any government agency for quality.
There have been many liver damage reports due to Herbalife weight loss supplements, sometimes requiring liver transplant surgery or even death.
Also, some products are contaminated by the growth of a bacterium called subtilis, which is linked to liver damage. Keep in mind that many adverse medications and supplements can cause adverse effects and liver damage.
There are unclear risks associating with herbalife products and supplements. A study funded by Herbalife found that protein-rich foods like herbalife nutrition formula 1 do not adversely affect liver function. It is vital to watch out for signs of different possible reactions as these may occur.

Herbalife is an American herbal and dietary supplement company whose products have been in the Indian market for 20 years. India and Asia are key markets for global multi-level marketing.

“Lots of users use Herbalife nutritional products out of harm’s way every day. We support the quality and safety of our nutritional health products. Milk Protein Concentrate Market Overview, Analysis, Trends, Size, Outlook
Milk protein concentrates are milk products with concentrated contents of milk protein. Milk protein concentrates are produced by processing skim milk. In the United States, milk protein concentrates are defined as “any complete milk protein concentrate (lactalbumin and casein) that contains 40% or more protein by weight.”
Producing milk protein concentrates from skim milk involves a series of procedures such as ultrafiltration, evaporation, and spray drying. Ultrafiltration separates whole milk into skim milk and cream, removing the liquid to obtain small molecules of protein and minerals. Milk protein concentrates are normally produced in the dry, powder form, and can be used in various dairy and food products, including desserts and energy bars, which mainly drives the milk protein concentrate market.

Vegan Pantry Starter Pack
When I first went vegan, I was seriously overwhelmed by all of the seemingly “weird” ingredients recipes called for. As a South Shore girl raised almost exclusively on fluffernutter sandwiches, Hamburger Helper, and Hood ice cream, I had no idea what the hell nutritional yeast was, or even that grocery stores even sold rice that didn’t come in a 99¢ Knorr’s packet.
And then once I finally had all of these fancy new ingredients and brought them to the cashier, my jaw dropped. Why was everything so expensive? Isn’t vegan food supposed to be cheaper?!
What I didn’t know is that I would never experience that kind of sticker shock again. See, once you jump over the hurdle of buying all of these “weird” plant-based pantry staples for the first time, it’ll be weeks, months, or even years until you have to buy them again.
I’ve divided some of the most popular vegan pantry staples into three lists depending on how often I purchase them. As you can see, I only purchase the more expensive items once every 3-4 months, as most whole-foods vegan recipes only require small amounts of them. So keep those savings in mind when experiencing sticker-shock on your $8.99 bag of raw cashews -- yes, that may seem like a lot of money upfront, but that bag should last several months. Think about it -- you wouldn’t even think twice about buying a pack of chicken breasts (by the way, a decaying animal corpse is much, much “weirder” than a bag of nuts) for the same price, and those would only last a meal or two!
*NOTE: I didn’t add prices because those can vary from store to store. Also, if you want to buy organic, that will also raise prices. Do whatever’s best for your budget. Also, the estimates below are for a household with only two adults and no (human) children.
PURCHASE ONCE PER YEAR
All Vinegars: Red, White, Rice, Apple Cider, etc.
I buy vinegar in bulk and use only a few tablespoons per month.
Liquid Smoke
If you’re someone who loves smoky, BBQ flavors, you may have to buy this more often, but a few drops go a long way, so a small bottle will last awhile!
Molasses
I really only use molasses for baking or occasionally making a sweet teriyaki sauce, and even then, most recipes only call for a teaspoon or two.
Hot Sauce
Buy Frank’s Red Hot (or similar) in bulk for best results. Very shelf-stable!
Baking Soda
All brands are identical - buy the cheapest in bulk!
Baking Powder
Same goes for baking powder - all brand are identical so go hard in bulk.
Salt and Pepper
I use plain old iodized table salt and black peppercorns, so I buy the store brand in bulk, but if you’re into fancy salts (Celtic, pink, coarse, etc.), you may have to buy it more often and at a higher price.
Uncommon Spices: Nutmeg, Garam Masala, Lemon Pepper, Dill, Celery Seed, etc.
Everyone has spices they use far less often than the others, or in very small amounts. For these “rarely used” seasonings, you should only have to purchase them once a year if you play your cards right.
Dry Beans: Chickpeas, Black Beans, Navy Beans, Pinto Beans, etc.
A giant bulk bag will last you the entire year... unless you’re going hard with your Instant Pot. In that case, buy more often. But if you alternate between using dried and canned beans, you should be good.
PURCHASE ONCE EVERY 3-4 MONTHS
Nutritional Yeast
Level 10 Vegans all have a “nooch” jar that can hold about 2 lbs. of the cheesy goodness that is nutritional yeast. If you fill this jar up every 3 months or so, you should be set.
Tahini
Unless you’re making large quantities of tahini sauce or homemade hummus every week, a medium-sized jar of tahini should last you 3-4 months at the absolute minimum. Ocean State Job Lot always has the best price on this - typically $3.99.
Soy Sauce or Tamari
A medium/large bottle of low-sodium soy sauce or tamari (or liquid aminos for my Level 20 Expert Mode Vegans out there) should last you for quite some time.
Bulk Rice (Brown, Jasmine, Basmati, etc.)
Buy in bulk if you have room to store it. If you have access to an Asian supermarket (H-Mart, what’s up?!), you’ll find some pretty amazing rice deals there.
Bulk Wheat Pasta (Whole Grain)
Never pay more than $1.29 for a box of regular wheat pasta, and if possible, hold off until the store is giving them away for 89¢/box (Stop & Shop does this often) and go hard.
Flour (Whole Wheat)
I highly recommend buying a large bag of Bob’s Red Mill Whole Wheat Pastry Flour from Market Basket. It’ll last.
Sugar (Unrefined: Pure Cane, Coconut, etc.)
As Mary Poppins used to sing, “a spoonful of unrefined sugar makes your oatmeal taste way better.”
Canned Beans
I buy 6 cans at a time when on sale: Black, Cannellini, Chickpeas, etc. That way, you have a stockpile to pull from.
Raw Nuts: Almonds, Cashews, Walnuts
Honestly, buying raw nuts sucks because they’re never inexpensive - even when on sale. But they’re so worth it, and you won’t use them that often, so don’t stress too much.
Common Spices: Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Black Pepper, Cumin, Chili Powder, Sage, Rosemary, etc.
Just grab 2-3 $1 bottles of each at Ocean State Job Lot every 3-4 months.
Apple Sauce
I like to buy the prepackaged/sealed single-serve cups so that they don’t go bad; unsweetened, of course.
Fancy Grains and Healthy Nutritional Stuff
Farro, Israeli couscous, chickpea pasta, hemp hearts, chia seeds, soba noodles, flax seeds... all of that fun stuff you use rarely or in small amounts. Protip: Buy from Vitacost using eBates when they’re having a flash sale.
PURCHASE ONCE OR TWICE A MONTH
Tofu and Other “Proteins”
Never pay more than $2 per block. My local Asian grocery store, H-Mart, hooks me up with 99¢ blocks, so I buy five packages at a time, making my monthly tofu cost $5. Tempeh, seitan, and other fake meats are not really a part of my everyday diet, but if I see some on sale, I may grab 1-2 packages per month.
Frozen Vegetables: Peas, Stir Fry Medleys, Leeks, Greens, Broccoli, etc.
I never pay more than $1.59 for a bag of frozen vegetables, and I typically max out on 99¢ cent deals. Make sure to avoid frozen veggies that come in a “sauce” or are “pre-seasoned” - the only ingredient(s) listed should be the vegetable(s) itself - no salt, oil, or seasonings. Market Basket or Wegman’s are my go-to frozen veggie providers.
Frozen Fruit: Mango, Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries, etc.
This purchase becomes more frequent in the summer, as I crave cold smoothies more when it’s hot out. If you ever see a good deal that makes fresh fruit (or veggies) cheaper than their frozen counterparts, make sure to grab them and freeze them on your own!
Peanut Butter
Natural, no salt added - the only ingredient listed should be “Peanuts” or “Dry Roasted Peanuts.” Chunky or smooth - the choice is yours. Teddie’s or Trader Joe’s brand is always a safe bet.
Maple Syrup
100% pure - none of that high-fructose corn syrup garbage. Bonus points if it’s from Vermont to keep things local!
Dry Lentils: Red and Brown
ABBL: Always Be Buying Lentils. Just trust me. Cheapest, healthiest food on the planet. And so much iron!
Canned Tomatoes: Diced, Tomato Paste, Crushed, Sauce
When possible, buy the “No Salt Added” varieties.
Condiments: Ketchup, BBQ Sauce, Mustard, or whatever you use most often.
PURCHASE WEEKLY
Plant-Based Milk: Almond, Coconut, Soy, etc.
As a family that eats oatmeal and/or smoothies almost every day, we buy approx. one gallon per week.
Oats
Whatever whole-grain oats suit your fancy: rolled/old fashioned, quick, steel-cut, etc. Just make sure the only ingredient is oats: no added salt, sugar, or other random chemicals. We buy our oats in bulk at Whole Foods.
Bananas
Buy in 3 stages of ripeness if possible: green (not even close to being ripe), yellow (the way omnivores like them), and just starting to spot (almost vegan-ready: make sure to wait until they’re very brown and spotty!).
Fresh Vegetables: Bell Peppers, Mushrooms, Carrots, Celery, Greens, and whatever else you use most often.
Look out for sales or hit up the discount produce rack to try new veggies!)
Fresh Fruit: Apples, Oranges, Lemons, and whatever else you use most often.
Potatoes
A five lb. bag of potatoes should last you longer than a week, but I always at least pick up a few sweet potatoes during my weekly shopping trip.
Onions
Pick up a bag of white/yellow onions and maybe a red onion or two.
Garlic
And while you’re in that section, grab a head or two of bulk garlic.

11 Non-Toxic DIY Products for Home & Body
In our effort to live in an ultra-sanitized world, our everyday exposure to dangerous and toxic chemicals has skyrocketed. We find these chemicals in antibacterial products, air fresheners, and more. To say that we have reached our toxicity threshold would be an understatement. From our workplace, to our bathrooms, to our kitchens and living rooms, right down to our cosmetic bag, the focus on ultra-clean living has officially passed the “trending” zone and has gained permanent residency in the healthy living realm, with no sign of leaving anytime soon.
Excessive Germ-Killing Leads to Toxicity
Our toxic load, or the total amount of stressors that we put on our system at any one time, plays a role in not only the health and disease pathways in our body, but also in our body’s ability to support a healthy detoxification system. Our detox system can easily become overloaded, like when a glass spills over with too much water. Things that lead to this include:
Lack of sleep
Excessive sugar
Too much stress
Environmental toxins
Chemicals
4 Symptoms of an Overwhelmed Detox System
When our detox systems get overwhelmed we will start to develop symptoms related to poor health.
1. Low Energy
As our system becomes inundated with environmental and chemical stressors, our adrenal glands can weaken, leading to fatigue and low energy. We also will burn through energizing vitamins more readily, such as B vitamins, in an attempt for the liver to detoxify these harmful substances. Chemicals may also interfere with sleep, leading to chronic fatigue and sleep disturbance. (1)
2. Weight Gain
As inflammation increases, we secrete more cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. This can increase ghrelin, the hunger hormone, decrease insulin sensitivity, and lead to increased weight gain. Cortisol is also densely located in visceral fat, which can also explain its link to weight gain. (2)
3. Suppressed Immune System
Chemicals found in our everyday beauty and home care products can lead to increased production of free radicals and oxidative stress, leading to a decreased immune response. Some chemicals may cause the immune system to overreact, while others can suppress immune activity. Many of these chemicals are recognized as foreign invaders in the body, which can lead to autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks its own cells. Autoimmune conditions like this can include lupus, thyroid disorders, and even arthritis. (3)
4. Cognitive Decline
Repeated exposure to toxic chemicals, combined with poor liver health, can inhibit the effects of certain neurotransmitters that can affect mood and ability to think clearly, such as serotonin, melatonin, dopamine, and adrenaline. Sherry Rogers, M.D. in her book, Tired or Toxic, explains that the most common organ affected by chemical exposure is the brain, leading to drowsiness, fatigue, exhaustion, and sluggish thinking. (4)
We Aren’t Protected Against Toxins
With the United States allowing more than 84,000 chemicals to be used in household products, cosmetics, and food alone, it comes as no surprise that we can easily begin to accumulate these toxins. A majority of these chemicals have never even been tested for safety.
According to the U.S. Poison Control Centers, in the year 2000, household cleaning products caused about 10 percent of all toxic exposures alone. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, 85 percent of new chemical applications include no testing whatsoever. (5)
The chemicals that are found in common household cleaners and personal and cosmetic products are one of the biggest sources of exposure that can lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body. A typical American adult comes in contact with an estimated 6,000 chemicals, most of them never being fully tested for safety. The FDA actually gives ownership to the individual company who makes and markets the cosmetic and personal care products to ensure the safety of their product, meaning that neither the law nor the FDA regulations require specific tests to show the safety of individual products and or their ingredients.
Long Term Risks of Chemical Exposure
Research suggest that exposure to these chemicals can contribute to cancer, reproductive issues, early puberty, endocrine dysfunction, neurological disorders, and metabolic problems. (6)
Most of these toxic chemicals have been found to be endocrine disrupting chemicals, which have been linked to health problems associated with breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, thyroid cancer, developmental effects on the nervous system in children, as well as ADHD in children. (7,8,9)
Repeat Offenders
Beauty and cleaning products can vary in the type of health hazards they may possess. Some ingredients can cause immediate and short-lived reactions, such as skin irritation, watery eyes, or even chemical burns, while other ingredients have been associated with long-term health issues, such as cancer. Some common chemicals that you will find more often than not in your personal, home, and skincare products include the following:
Parabens: These synthetic preservatives are known to interfere with hormone production. These are often found in deodorants and face creams. (10)
Phthalates: A carcinogenic and synthetic preservative, phthalates have been linked to adverse reproductive effects such as decreased sperm count, early breast development, liver and kidney damage, and birth defects. These are usually found in personal care products, such as nail polish, hair sprays, lotions, soaps, shampoos, and perfumes. (11)
Synthetic Musks: These have been linked to hormone disruption and have been found to accumulate in breast milk, body fat, and umbilical cord blood. Fragrance formulas are among the top five known allergens and have been known to trigger asthma attacks. You will find these in fragrances and perfumes. (12)
Triclosan: Found in most antibacterial soaps and some toothpastes, this antibacterial chemical has been linked to antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption. Research has also found triclosan to cause estrogenic activities in human breast cancer cells, stimulating growth and development. This is found mainly in antibacterial soaps and hand wash. (13)
PCBs: A synthetic chemical that has been linked to hormone disruption, neurobehavioral issues, cancer, and decreased immune response, PCBs are found in most cosmetic products, including soaps, face creams and even mascara! (14)
Beauty Products
In Europe, more than 1,300 chemicals have been banned from use in lotions, soaps, toothpastes, and cosmetics. In the U.S., just 11 chemicals have been banned. According to the Environmental Working Group, the average woman uses 12 personal care products and/or cosmetics per day, containing over 168 different chemicals.
About 80 percent of women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease, further connecting the link between exposure to environmental toxins and their role in disrupting the body’s hormone systems through repeated exposure of these endocrine-disrupting chemicals. (15)
DIY Body Care
With so many risks from conventional cosmetic and body care products, it is becoming increasingly safer to make your own. DIY body care products are simple, affordable, and free from hidden chemicals.
Apple Cider Vinegar
While it is popular for its many health benefits, apple cider vinegar also comes in handy for some of its not so common uses, such as cooking, cleaning, hygiene, and more. Here are a few additional ways to integrate this versatile kitchen staple into your daily beauty routine.
Hair Rinse: Apple cider vinegar can help remove product build-up in your hair. Try a weekly rinse to add shine and body by pouring this throughout your hair after shampooing. Combine 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of water in a mason jar for a quick post shampoo rinse. Add a few drops of essential oil, like lavender, for a fresh scent.
Skin Saver: Make an easy, affordable facial toner and cleanser by diluting apple cider vinegar. Spread some on a cotton ball and rub on your T-zone to decrease oil build-up for beautiful skin!
Coconut Oil
This fantastic fat can leave your kitchen cabinet and find its way into your bathroom. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a fatty acid known for its antimicrobial and antibacterial benefits.
Oil Pulling Mouthwash: Mix 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil with 3 drops of peppermint essential oil. Gently swish the coconut oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes, and be sure not to swallow any of the oil. Do this 3 to 5 times per week!
Face Moisturizer: Keep it simple and just use plain coconut oil to add moisture to your skin after washing or showering. Also works for a whole body moisturizer.
Baking Soda
This is a rock star when it comes to replacing personal and home cleaning products. Baking soda can be used to naturally whiten teeth, clean the countertops, and even keep body odor at bay. Deodorant is one of the worst offenders when it comes to personal care product toxicity, as many deodorants contain aluminum and other anti-caking agents, which has been linked to breast cancer, altered thyroid function, and hormone dysregulation.
DIY Deodorant: Combine 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda with 5 tablespoons arrowroot powder, 5 tablespoons shea butter, and 30 drops of your favorite essential oil. Tea tree oil or lemon will keep things fresh and free from bacteria. Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl until it has a dough-like consistency, transfer the mixture into a mason jar, and use your fingertips to apply a small amount to your underarms.
DIY Lotion: Combine 1 cup aloe vera gel, 1 cup water, ½ cup jojoba oil, and ¼ cup beeswax. Add in 1-2 teaspoons of Vitamin E oil, 5 drops Frankincense oil, and 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Try vanilla for a sweet scent. Add all ingredients to a mixer and blend on low until the mixture becomes lotion-like in consistency. Transfer to a glass container and use morning, noon, or night for glowing and toxin-free skin.
Home Cleaning Products
Most of the commercial cleaning products that we use on a daily basis contain dangerous chemicals that might not even be listed on the label. A manufacturer can omit any ingredient that is considered a “secret formula” from the label, even if it is a toxic carcinogen.
The Environmental Working Group urges complete avoidance of unnecessary cleaners, like oven and drain cleaners, which are at the top of the list when it comes to being highly toxic. The three most dangerous cleaning products that are most commonly used at home are oven cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and acid-based cleaners. If you take even a quick glance at the labels, many of these products are labeled with adjectives like “danger” or “corrosive.” Many of these scents, detergents, bleaches, and ingredients can result in immediate health hazards such as skin or respiratory problems, irritated eyes, asthma, and burns.
Ingredients like chlorine bleach are often found in dishwasher detergents, bathroom cleaners, and stain removers, while ammonia is found in glass cleaners, metal cleaners, and dishwashing liquids. These are two of the most toxic chemicals that are commonly found in most American homes.
You can reduce your chemical exposure by simply eliminating or reducing your use of these products and making your own natural cleaning products. Some of the most effective cleaners can be made from items that you likely already have in your cabinets, like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice!
Make Your Own Home Cleaning Products
These ingredients are inexpensive and free from toxins that can cause irritation or harm to skin. As a bonus, they’re safer for children and pets.
Oven Cleaner: Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda over the bottom of the oven and cover with enough water to create a thick paste. Let the mixture set overnight and wipe away built-up grease the following day.
Drain Cleaner: Pour ½ cup baking soda down your drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Allow this to sit in the drain for 10-15 minutes. Flush with boiling water for a sparkling and clog-free drain!
Laundry Detergent: Combine 1 cup washing or baking soda with 1 cup of Dr. Bronner’s Castile soap and ½ cup of white vinegar. Add in 10 drops of your favorite essential oil for a clean and calming scent. Store the mixture in a glass container and use 1-2 tablespoon per load of clothes, less if you have a high efficiency washer.
Fabric softener: Skip the chemicals and scents and simply add ½ cup of white vinegar to your fabric softener dispenser. Add a few drops of essential oil if you want your clothes to have a bit of natural scent.
All Purpose Cleaner: Combine 16 oz of hydrogen peroxide with 5 drops of lemon essential oil and 5 drops lavender essential oil in an opaque spray bottle and shake together. Use for cleaning any household surface that is not wood.

Vegan and Organic Christmas - Recipes, Products and Top Tips
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
By FOOD EDITOR FOR SUSTAIN HEALTH
PUBLISHED: 11:12, 04 December 2019 | UPDATED: 11:22, 04 December 2019
Imagine a Christmas where you could only sit and watch as people indulge in tubs of chocolates, endless cheese boards and of course the big family festive dinner - this was the reality year after year for chocolatier Chris Crutchley who suffers with terrible food intolerances.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Before creating Enjoy! - a vegan-friendly chocolate whose recipes are free from the 14 major allergens - Chris would feel left out every Christmas, unable to afford himself the treats on offer which others wouldn’t think twice about taking pleasure in.
“Due to my intolerances I have gone without over the festive period on many occasions. I have even missed out on proper Christmas dinners in the past and certainly haven’t been able to satisfy my sweet tooth a lot of the time,” said Chris, 55.
“If I eat something I’m intolerant to, the effects manifest themselves in a number of ways. I may have stomach problems, have no energy and feel lethargic, have difficulty in thinking and concentrating, get severe itchy eyes, constipation and generally feel dreadful. It can ruin the festive period, which no one wants, but so many people will be able to relate to.
“But in avoiding those symptoms, it’s also not particularly nice to have to refrain from all the things everyone else loves about Christmas, and sometimes you can feel a bit withdrawn, unable to take part in all the fun everyone else is having.”
Chris is not alone. It is estimated by The Association of UK Dietitians that between 1% and 10% of adults and children in the country have a food hypersensitivity. However, as many as 20% of the population experience some reactions to foods which make them believe they do have a food hypersensitivity.
According to the Food Standards Agency there are an estimated two million people living in the UK with a diagnosed food allergy - and many of these people will be dreading Christmas.
But help is at hand as Enjoy! chocolate is suitable for many of those who suffer with intolerances or allergies.
“I decided to spend time working out how I could get around my intolerances, but also have a treat which was actually enjoyable too,” said Chris.
After 15 years of not being able to eat chocolate and numerous other foods he started experimenting in the kitchen at home making chocolate using organic, raw and natural ingredients.
Enjoy!’s base recipe contains just three organic ingredients - cacao powder, cacao butter and coconut sugar.
Chris and his wife Steph have now developed a 26-product strong chocolate range which is stocked in the likes of Holland & Barrett, helping thousands with food intolerances like Chris, as well as allergy sufferers, to be able to enjoy their Christmas too.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
To help others through the festivities Chris has pulled together his top tips for those with restrictive dietary requirements...
Chris’ top tips
1. Plan ahead. Whether it’s a Christmas party with colleagues or a Boxing Day meal out with your close family, restaurants are usually quite good at catering for the free-from market now but that’s no reason you can’t get one step ahead of the game. Check out the menu ahead of the day itself and see what’s available for you to choose from. If you have food allergies, make sure you take your card with you displaying your allergies to make it abundantly clear what you can and can’t have.
2 Stock up. Stock up on your favourite goodies and free-from replacements you know work and take them with you when you’re visiting a friend’s house. Especially sweet treats - there’s nothing worse than everyone enjoying a mince pie with their tipple except you!
3. Let people know in advance. If a friend or family member has invited you round for a festive celebration, let them know ahead of time about your allergies or food intolerances. They may be able to cater for you, or you could offer to bring your own alternatives - to make sure there’s no cross-contamination.
4. Take advantage of offers. Whether it’s Black Friday, Cyber Monday or early January sales, offers are in abundance this time of year. Pencil in the offer’s validation dates and plan a trip to your local supermarket, locate the free-from or vegan aisle and treat yourself to trying out some new products!
5. Don’t give in. You don’t want to ruin your own Christmas by giving into a tempting treat that won’t agree with you, in a moment of weakness. Stay strong, then reward yourself either with an edible treat you know you can safely eat, or an activity you enjoy doing.
Enjoy!’s very own Michelin-star chef Tyrone who works with Chris at the Andover-based factory, has created some delicious recipes for people with intolerances and allergies to try this festive season.

Are all protein supplements well capable of muscle gains or not?
We all know that proteins are the best sources for development within our body also well known as the building blocks of the body.
Proteins are everywhere within our bodies catering to the developments, almost about 80% of our body is just proteins the muscles, the bones, the cells, the tissues, and the enzymes, etc. all are made up of proteins. That’s so in order to develop well our bodies we require protein content within.
Majorly the food we consume is all responsible for the proteins catering within our body but because of the constant nutrient degradation within the food items available as well major dependency on the processed and fortified food had led people to face nutritional gaps.
Tumblr media
Such gaps if not managed well can land up in health issues as compromising body developments within. Markets are all filled up with abundant food choices like protein powders, protein bars, protein capsules, protein tablets, protein bars, protein-based drinks, protein waters, etc.
Why do we need to consume the best protein-based supplement for muscle gain and strength?
Protein supplements available are all capable of maintaining the gaps as well as managing the nutrition. These supplements are concentrated sources of protein either from the animal(meat-based) or plant(phyto proteins) foods, like dairy foods, eggs, rice or peas, etc. Basically protein supplements irrespective of their derivative agents come in following three forms always-
Protein Concentrates: These are the sources of protein that are developed by directly extracting the protein-based content from the whole food materials using extreme heat, using any of the chemical actions and the enzyme supports. These supplements are 60%-80% of the protein supplements and the remaining supplements from the fats and carbohydrates.
Protein Isolates: These are the protein supplement sources type that is to be developed out of filtering the carbohydrates and the fat constituents and further processing them for the proteins within. Such protein supplements provide about 90%-95% of the protein-based supplementation within when consumed.
Protein Hydrolysates: These are the best protein supplement for muscle gain that is developed by further heating and processing with the acidic compounds and the enzymes which thereby break in the tight bonds of the amino organic compounds and thereby synthesize proteins.
Due to the involvement of the amino supplement within the product, they, therefore, serve out easy absorption and digestion feature within our bloodstreams. Hydrolyzed amino present within helps one to easily absorb the supplements and gain benefits.
Tumblr media
What are the possible best examples of the protein-based supplement that are for muscle gain?
BCAA is Also well known as the branched-chain amino acids are the most popular and amazing protein catering supplement that are proving with all optimum benefits due to their easy and quick absorption feature.
These are also well consumed by people with poor digestion issues as well who have bad bowel management problems so often. Most people avoid consuming protein supplements out of their food choices vegetarian and vegan but when subjected to BCAA they need not care as they are composed out of all organic compounds within.
WHEY They are the popular and the best protein supplement for muscle gain that is well adapted and consumed by large people out there due to their outstanding results. These protein supplements are to be developed from the dairy-based products generally within the process of extracting cheese from milk.
These are outstanding alternative supplement choices for the vegetarian people out there as well they are also quite potent and fast-acting protein-based supplements available out there. Generally available in two different forms-
● Isolated WHEY
● Hydrolyzed WHEY
CASEIN It is also the dairy-based protein supplementation that are also developed as same as of the WHEY just differ with their absorption properties. They are quite slow to digestion and absorption within the body than of the WHEY.
They are also dairy-based supplement that’s so comfortably be consumed with vegetarian people out there. Consume casein when requiring energy but not instant best to have them before sleeping or before the workout sessions for optimum benefits out there.
However, we know that not everyone benefits from such protein supplements. If your diet is already good and protein-rich or filled up with high-quality protein, then you are likely to see not much difference within your nutritional caterings.
Although, athletes and bodybuilders are the people who regularly indulge in resistance training and workouts and may find that consuming protein supplements would surely help them maximize their muscle gain and fat loss.
Protein powders can also aid individuals who struggle to meet protein also cater to other needs that their food alone cannot, other than that person who is ill, the older adults and some vegetarians or vegans also consume the phyto protein and the dairy-based protein supplements for the benefits within.

How To Make Matcha tea! Which Is More Powerful Than Green Tea! +recipe a...
Green tea is one of the most popular drinks in the world. It offers various potential health benefits, such as weight loss and improved heart health. Matcha, a particular variety of green tea, is marketed as even healthier than other types. It is grown and prepared differently than other green teas. What’s more, the whole tea leaf is consumed. However, you may wonder if matcha lives up to the hype. This video explains whether matcha is healthier than other green teas.
What Is Matcha?
Matcha and regular green tea both come from the Camellia sinensis plant, which is native to China. However, matcha is grown differently than regular green tea. The tea bushes are shielded from sunlight for about 20–30 days before harvest. The shade triggers an increase in chlorophyll levels, which turns the leaves a darker shade of green and increases the production of amino acids.
After harvesting, the stems and veins are removed from the leaves. They are then stone-ground into a fine, bright green powder known as matcha. Because the whole leaf powder is ingested, matcha is even higher in some substances — such as caffeine and antioxidants — than green tea. One cup of standard matcha, made from 4 teaspoons of powder, generally packs about 280 mg of caffeine. This is significantly higher than a cup of regular green tea, which provides 35 mg of caffeine.
However, most people don’t drink a full cup of matcha at once because of its high caffeine content. It’s more common to drink 2–4 ounces (59–118 ml). Caffeine content also varies based on how much powder you add. Matcha, which can have a grassy and bitter taste, is often served with a sweetener or milk. Matcha powder is also popular in smoothies and baking.
How Is It Prepared?
While regular tea is made from soaked leaves, matcha is made from ground, whole leaves. It is usually prepared in the traditional Japanese way. The tea is measured with a bamboo spoon, or shashaku, into a heated tea bowl known as a chawan. Hot water (about 158°F or 70°C) is then added to the bowl. The tea is whisked with a special bamboo whisk, called a chasen, until it becomes smooth with froth on top.
Matcha can be prepared in several consistencies:
Standard. Most people mix 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with 2 ounces (59 ml) of hot water. Usucha (thin). This thinner version uses about half a teaspoon of matcha mixed with 3–4 ounces (89–118 ml) of hot water. Koicha (thick). Sometimes used in Japanese tea ceremonies, this thick version takes 2 teaspoons of matcha for 1 ounce (30 ml) of hot water. There is no foam, and a higher grade of matcha is required.
Remember that you don't need special equipment to make a good cup of matcha. A cup, a teaspoon, and a small whisk will do just fine.
Health Benefits of Matcha!
Since matcha is simply a variety of green tea, it has most of the same health benefits. However, because matcha is more concentrated in antioxidants, a single cup may be equivalent to about 3 cups of regular green tea. Studies suggest that it may reduce the risk of kidney and liver damage while lowering blood sugar, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels.
Here are the main health benefits associated with drinking matcha green tea.
Packed with Antioxidants!
Dietary antioxidants counteract free radicals in your body, protecting cells and tissues from damage. Matcha is very high in antioxidants, especially catechins. Its most powerful catechin is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG has been studied extensively. It may fight inflammation in your body, help maintain healthy arteries, and promote cell repair.
What's more, whole-leaf teas contain more antioxidants than tea bags or ready-to-drink products. One study found that matcha contains up to 137 times more antioxidants than a low-grade variety of green tea and up to 3 times more antioxidants than other high-quality teas.
May Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease!
Heart disease is the biggest cause of death worldwide. Many factors are known to increase heart disease risk. Drinking green tea may help improve several of these risk factors, including total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels. Furthermore, green tea may protect against the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, another major heart disease risk factor.
Studies show that people who drink green tea have up to a 31% lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t. This is mainly attributed to the antioxidants and plant compounds in green tea, which are found in even higher amounts in matcha.
May Aid Weight Loss!
Green tea has often been associated with weight loss. In fact, it’s a common ingredient in many weight loss supplements. Human studies reveal that green tea increases your total calories burned by boosting your metabolic rate. It has also been shown to increase selective fat burning by up to 17%.
However, keep in mind that green tea is only a very small piece of the weight loss puzzle — and not all studies agree that it helps. A recent review concluded that the weight loss effects of green tea are so small that they are not of clinical importance.
May Boost Relaxation and Alertness!
In addition to being a great source of antioxidants, green tea contains a unique amino acid called L-theanine. In fact, matcha boasts much higher levels of L-theanine than other types of green tea. L-theanine may increase alpha waves in your brain. These waves are linked to mental relaxation and may help fight stress signals. L-theanine also modifies the effects of caffeine in your body, increasing alertness without causing the drowsiness that often follows coffee consumption.
Thus, matcha tea may provide a milder and longer-lasting buzz than coffee. L-theanine can also increase the number of feel-good chemicals in your brain, leading to improved mood, memory, and concentration. Furthermore, studies indicate that powdered green tea may improve brain function and reduce age-related mental decline in older adults.
Safety and Side Effects!
Some side effects and risks are associated with matcha consumption. Because matcha is highly concentrated in both beneficial and harmful substances, it’s generally not recommended to drink more than 2 cups per day.
Contaminants!
By consuming matcha powder, you are really ingesting the whole tea leaf — along with everything it contains. Matcha leaves may harbor contaminants — including heavy metals, pesticides, and fluoride — from the soil in which the plant grows. Using organic matcha may reduce your risk of exposure to pesticides, but even organic leaves may still contain substances from the soil that are harmful when ingested in large amounts.
Liver and Kidney Toxicity!
Matcha contains about three times more antioxidants than high-quality regular green tea. As such, 2 cups of matcha may provide equal amounts of plant compounds as 6 cups of other high-quality green teas.
While individual tolerance varies, high levels of the plant compounds found in matcha may cause nausea and symptoms of liver or kidney toxicity. Some individuals have shown signs of liver toxicity after consuming just 6 cups of green tea daily for 4 months — or about 2 daily cups of matcha.
