This lace shawl, which appeared in the 1940 film The Letter, is far more than just a beautiful piece of clothing. Its appearance serves to symbolize Davis’ character, Leslie Crosbie’s habit of weaving a web of lies while feigning innocence. The piece was reused in the 1946 film The Beast with Five Fingers, where Andrea King wore it as Julie Holden.

Some Like It Hot / Jack Lemmon as Jerry/"Daphne"

Year: 1959

Designer: Orry-Kelly

"Daphne's" dress has delicate embroidery tracing lozenge shapes on the front and back, surrounded by grapevine and dragonfly motifs. The little waist-level bows on the sides are a whimsical touch. The skirt has a scalloped edge and more embroidery, possibly floral.

Behind-the-scenes and publicity pictures reveal that this dress was a delicate pink, while Tony Curtis as Joe/Josephine was in pastel blue.

February: Orange Redux

Gypsy / Natalie Wood as Louise Hovick (Gypsy Rose Lee)

This film takes place during the 1920s, but there's nothing particularly 20s about this costume--and they weren't even trying when it came to the hair. Still, it's appropriately showbiz-ish in looks.

She starts out with a loose, short "crop top" over the dress, but that comes off as part of the act. The ribbon and beading at the waist, ending in the long, dangling threads in front, are the main decorative element on the underlayer.

This film was one of the last for legendary designer Orry-Kelly. He worked on more than 300 films dating back to the dawn of the talkies.
