Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!

I was watching “Devil’s Advocate” and I swear Al Pacino scared the hell out of me. I really think the devil would look & act just like John Milton. John Milton was seductive, charming, handsome, & intelligent. I literally can see myself sleeping with John Milton & falling in love w/ his ass. Al Pacino deserved an Oscar I swear he really convinced me he was Kevin Lomax’s father/Satan. The way Kevin’s mother looked at Milton on the elevator made me scared of Milton from there on out. Like “Devil’s Advocate” had me hooked I forgot how good it was. Keanu Reeves really went toe to toe with Al Pacino and he stood his ground 👏🏾👏🏾. I really believe John Milton is the devil.

On October 8th 2012 ,Captain Eric Lomax died aged 93.
Lomax, who was captured at the fall of Singapore in 1942, was among thousands of servicemen who were used as slave labour by the Japanese on the railway. Years later he came to terms with his treatment by meeting his interrogator from torture sessions and writing about his experiences in his book, The Railway Man.
His book was adapted for a movie in which Oscar-winning star Firth plays him in later life, with Jeremy Irvine playing him in his younger days. The Railwayman was one of the landmark books of the 1990s.
The horrific conditions of the prisoners as they built the line, with a terrible loss of life, famously formed the basis of David Lean's 1957 film, The Bridge On The River Kwai.
Lomax endured savage beatings when guards found a radio he had helped to build within his prison camp.
He went on to become a lecturer at Strathclyde University, but was haunted by his treatment and met the interpreter who had interrogated him while he was tortured, Takashi Nagase, after he wrote about his remorse in a book.
Lomax's wife, Patti, contacted Nagase and both men returned to Kanchanaburi to meet in 1993 and eventually became friends, it really shows the measure of the man and his compassion with the forgiveness to the man who must have inflicted many beatings upon him.
Lomax was born on 30th May 1919 in Edinburgh and was a Royal Signals officer attached to the 5th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. He was commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals in 1940 and was a lieutenant when he was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore.
In 1945, Lomax returned to Edinburgh following three and half years of interrogation and torture. He was awarded the Efficiency Medal (Militia) in 1949 and was granted the honorary rank of captain.
Lomax wrote about his experiences during the war and his reconciliation with one of his former torturers on the The Forgiveness Project website, which is a  charity that explores how reconciliation can be used to help people's lives.
Captain Lomax wrote: "After my retirement in 1982, I started searching for information about what had happened in Siam. The need to know is powerful. In the course of my search I learnt that Nagase Takashi – my interrogator and torturer – had offered to help others with information.”
"I learnt that he was still alive, active in charitable works, and that he had built a Buddhist temple. I was sceptical. I couldn't believe in the notion of Japanese repentance. I strongly suspected that if I were to meet him I'd put my hands round his neck and do him in.”
"After our meeting I felt I'd come to some kind of peace and resolution. Forgiveness is possible when someone is ready to accept forgiveness. Some time the hating has to stop."

Is there going to be a Los Angeles Film Festival in 2022?
The Los Angeles Film Festival 2022 is a great way to meet other filmmakers and learn about new projects. It takes place in October each year at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, California.
Micheauxfilmfest.com is an annual event that honors African American culture while celebrating the art of filmmaking. The festival lasts four days and includes screenings, workshops, panels, and other activities.
The Micheaux Film Festival has been held in Los Angeles since 2011. It was founded by filmmaker Tony Mitchell and his wife, Fatima Asay-Mitchell. Tony Mitchell is best known for directing "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate" (1996).
The Micheaux Film Festival is named after Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951), who was one of the first African American filmmakers in the United States to produce feature films for black audiences during the silent era. His films include "In Old Kentucky" (1919), which was one of the first films to feature an all-black cast; "Within Our Gates" (1920), which explores racial prejudice in America through a story about a lynching; and "The Lynching of Tom Jones" (1921), which tells the story of Tom Jones, a black man who is lynched for killing his white employer's son.
The Micheaux Film Festival is named after Oscar Micheaux, the first African American filmmaker to produce more than 100 films during his career. He made his first film in 1919 and continued to create films until his death in 1950.
The festival was founded in 2017 by Alan Lomax and Ken Poyner. They created it to honor Oscar Micheaux’s legacy as well as provide a platform for emerging filmmakers of color.
In 2019, Micheauxfilmfest.com moved from New Orleans to Los Angeles where it will be held annually on June 11th through 14th at various venues throughout the city including Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), California African American Museum (CAAM), Pan Pacific Park (PPP), West Adams Historic Park (WAPH) and others. The festival has grown substantially since its inception with over 5,000 attendees each year making it one of the largest events in LA’s historic Crenshaw district where Oscar Micheaux lived for many years before moving to New York City where he died in 1950 at age 78.
The Micheaux Film Festival is a four-day event that celebrates African American culture while honoring the art of filmmaking. It takes place in Los Angeles every year and includes screenings, workshops, panels, and other activities.
This year's festival was held from June 13th to 16th. It included screenings of films by Micheaux Films like “Within Our Gates” and “The Greener Side of Greed” as well as panel discussions with actors like Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle and directors like Oscar Micheaux himself.
The festival also celebrated its 50th anniversary this year by paying tribute to the work of a number of prominent African American filmmakers such as Spike Lee, who received an award for his contributions to film during an awards ceremony held on June 15th at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

Gatecrasher...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (1st-5th June 2020)
Kyle continued in his downward spiral this week following the car crash. Nancy was horrified when she happened upon the accident, but her concern soon turned to anger when she realised that Oscar was sitting in the passenger seat. However, deciding to spare Kyle a night in the cells, Nancy took the blame for the accident but that didn’t mean that Kyle was off the hook. Once back at home, Nancy tore into Kyle for putting Oscar’s life at risk and ordered him to chose between her and drugs. Kyle was unable to articulate to Nancy his reliance on the drugs and his depression, leading to him walking out.
Tumblr media
It didn’t take long for Kyle to realise his mistake, and he turned to Darren for help in winning Nancy back. Sadly, Darren was just as angry as Nancy had been over the accident and refused to help. However, Darren was given food for thought when Kyle pointed out that he’d always had his back, and now it was time for Darren to return the favour. Mandy, however, was beginning to have concerns about Darren and Kyle’s friendship, and suggested that Darren needed to focus on his own recovery, rather than helping Kyle. Believing that Mandy was right, Darren called Kyle over to The Hutch and told him that the friendship was no longer working, leaving Kyle heartbroken.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, it was the day of Mercedes and Sylver’s vow renewal, and Hollyoaks continued in their tradition of having the groom’s long lost child gatecrash proceedings! On the morning of the ceremony, a young woman was skulking about outside The Dog, and confronted Warren, introducing herself as his daughter, Cher. It was soon became apparent that she’d mistaken Warren for Sylver and, after palling up with Romeo to gain access to the pub, approached Sylver after the ceremony. However, Sylver denied all knowledge of Cher, and her Mother, and ordered her out.
Tumblr media
In other news this week, having also been caught up in Kyle’s crash, Jordan found himself growing closer to Leela, and the pair slept together whilst Nana was horrified to learn that John Paul was dating a copper (remember Carmel and Calvin, Nana?) Finally, satisfied that she was leaving her kids in capable hands, Misbah left the village for her secondment in Surrey.

This Week’s Cast:

My (Spoiler-Filled) Thoughts on Mr. Robot 4.1
So it’s been one day since Sam Esmail once again destroyed my emotions. Honestly, my feels were doing some Simone Biles-level gymnastics, sending me through all 5 stages of grief in one hour. I just... dysrtuytfuiiu6fhoujiiuytydyiouhoutysgh. There is so much content that I won’t discuss everything, just the things that got me the most. Plus others have already dissected plot points much more eloquently than I could. So, you get my jumbled feelings.
Angela. Poor Angela! I had a hunch she’d die at some point but in the first scene of the first episode? I was NOT expecting that & it was unsettling. While I think Angela deserved better & will miss her, I feel a little better about the whole thing after reading an interview with Portia about it on EW, and it sounds like she & Sam had a good collaboration going & she’s happy with how it turned out. One of the Mr. Robot recap podcasts I listen to is co-hosted by the interviewer & he said Portia was pretty upbeat about it. I realize some people think Rami is to blame for Portia/Angela’s near-absence this season, but I honestly think he has very little to do with it. Remember, Sam had the story planned from the beginning. I doubt he’d make that drastic of a change to the story because of personal issues between actors. Whatever happened between Portia & Rami is just speculation; nobody knows for sure what transpired & I really believe they are both professionals who would not jeopardize production over personal issues. Sam Esmail also doesn’t strike me as the type to let those kinds of issues disrupt a production in that kind of way. Just my opinion.
Elliot. Rami Malek is brilliant. Honestly, they need to give him another roomful of awards because he’s that good. The last scene... I was crying. I honestly thought Elliot really did die & the rest of the episodes would be focused on events leading up to that moment, and I was about to curse Sam Esmail for life. I am still so worried that poor Elliot is going to wind up dead, which will break my heart. I want so much for him to have some kind of a happy ending. I’m worried that he’s becoming hyper-focused on his quest, meaning he won’t be able to see the forest for the trees & get caught in more traps than the honeypot house. I mean, when Mr. Robot is the voice of reason? He’s also not talking to us? Not good.
I’m going to watch the episode again (not just once lol) because there’s so much I missed thanks to my brain being numb. Not sure why Darlene was having a party in Angela’s apartment but the cocaine & ballet shoes broke my heart. Carly Chaikin is also amazing & deserves a pile of awards thrown at her. I always saw Darlene as one of those people who are outwardly forward, confident, & even harsh because they’re masking serious insecurity. We see her unravel throughout the series as things go wrong... plus the immense grief & guilt she’s never had the chance to fully process... not surprising she has self-destructed. I always felt that either Darlene or Angela (or both) would die because of what Sam had said about how far Elliot’s character is going to be pushed this season. The death of one or both of the people he loves the most would be a strong enough catalyst to push his character over the edge.
Other thoughts: Janice has replaced Price as the creepiest character on the show. Yikes! Elliot peacing out & leaving Robot to handle Darlene’s drug-addled rant made me laugh in spite of myself. I need my own Mr. Robot to handle annoying people at work, ha! Loved Mac Quayle’s cameo in Grand Central Station & Emmy Rossum in the chorus. But I was so mad at Sam when he showed up to torture poor Elliot! Goodbye, friend? Jus stab me through the heart with a rusty knife, why don’t you? Also love hearing Another One Bites the Dust at Freddie Lomax’s party. Nice little nod to our Oscar winner. Plus the references to InGen & Costa Rica in the documents related to Zhang & the Cyprus bank (as a few folks around the interwebs pointed out). Nice tribute to BD Wong in Jurassic Park. Also, Tyrell is bored.
tl/dr: I died several times & cried over Elliot. Creepy people are creepy. I’m scared. I can’t wait for more.

A screen Giant
Lomax:
That's what I've always said the world needs... more simple understanding to bring people together! -
from the War Wagon
Kirk Douglas- December 9, 1916 – February 5, 2020) was an American actor, producer, director, philanthropist and writer. After an impoverished childhood with immigrant parents and six sisters, he made his film debut in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) with Barbara Stanwyck. Douglas soon developed into a leading box-office star throughout the 1950s, known for serious dramas, including westerns and war films. During his career, he appeared in more than 90 films. Douglas was known for his explosive acting style, which he displayed as a criminal defense attorney in Town Without Pity (1961).
Douglas became an international star through positive reception for his leading role as an unscrupulous boxing hero in Champion (1949), which brought him his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. His other early films include Young Man with a Horn (1950), playing opposite Lauren Bacall and Doris Day, Ace in the Hole opposite Jan Sterling (1951), and Detective Story (1951), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actor in a Drama. He received a second Oscar nomination for his dramatic role in The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), opposite Lana Turner, and his third nomination for portraying Vincent van Gogh in Lust for Life (1956), which landed him a second Golden Globe nomination.
In 1955, he established Bryna Productions, which began producing films as varied as Paths of Glory (1957) and Spartacus (1960). In those two films, he collaborated with the then-relatively-unknown director Stanley Kubrick, taking lead roles in both films. Douglas has been praised for helping to break the Hollywood blacklist by having Dalton Trumbo write Spartacus with an official on-screen credit. He produced and starred in Lonely Are the Brave (1962), considered a classic, and Seven Days in May (1964), opposite Burt Lancaster, with whom he made seven films. In 1963, he starred in the Broadway play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, a story that he purchased and later gave to his son Michael Douglas, who turned it into an Oscar-winning film.
As an actor and philanthropist, Douglas received three Academy Award nominations, an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As an author, he wrote ten novels and memoirs. He is No. 17 on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest male screen legends of classic Hollywood cinema, the highest-ranked living person on the list until his death. After barely surviving a helicopter crash in 1991 and then suffering a stroke in 1996, he focused on renewing his spiritual and religious life. He lived with his second wife (of 65 years), Anne Buydens, a producer, until his death on February 5, 2020, at age 103. A centenarian, he was one of the last surviving stars of the film industry's Golden Age.

Lomax, John A, Ruby T Lomax, and José Suarez. El Corrido de José Mosqueda. Brownsville, Texas, 1939. Audio. https://www.loc.gov/item/lomaxbib000075/.
El Corrido de José Mosqueda
A Train Robbery On January 19, 1891, José Mosqueda and a group of outlaws robbed the Rio Grande Railroad near Brownsville, Texas. They got away with about $75,000 in silver pesos along with some government mail. The general manager of the railroad, Simón Celaya, turned to the Brownsville City Marshall and Texas Ranger, Santiago Brito. Feuding with the local sheriff, Matthew L. Browne, Brito and his men did some solid detective work, interviewing witnesses and tracking clues to find the men who had robbed the train. Though Brito refused to hand the men over to Browne, the only nearby jail was in Brownsville, landing the men in Browne’s jurisdiction. Mosqueda was sentenced to life in prison and one co-conspirator was sentenced to 10 years. Very little of the money was ever recovered. Both Browne and Brito were shot within the next two years, while Mosqueda and his co-conspirator died in jail.
A Story for the Ages However, the story doesn’t end there. Only a few years later, a new corrido, or folk song ballad, appeared commemorating the incident. Though the song originally celebrated Brito’s capture of the Mosqueda gang, over the next 50 years the song morphed. Mosqueda and his men became folk heroes who distributed the silver they had stolen among the poor of the Rio Grande Valley, while Brito became a cowardly lawman who fled from an encounter with Mosqueda and his men. Some claim that Mosqueda also buried the silver along the river and that some is still waiting to be found.
The version of “El Corrido de José Mosqueda” at the top was recorded in 1939 as sung by José Suarez, a folk singer, but has also been recorded as recently as the 1990s by Oscar Chavez, a noted Mexican singer.
