Why are Small Businesses Turning to Outsourcing Website Maintenance Services?
Tumblr media
In the dynamic digital landscape, a website acts as the virtual storefront for any business. It's the first point of contact that potential customers have with a brand, making its maintenance non-negotiable.
However, for small businesses operating on limited budgets and workforce, maintaining a website can be a daunting task. This challenge has led many to turn towards outsourcing website maintenance services.
Let's delve into the reasons behind this trend.
Cost Efficiency
The primary allure of outsourcing website maintenance lies in its cost-effectiveness. Hiring a full-time web developer or a dedicated IT team can significantly strain the financial resources of a small business.
Outsourcing offers a flexible solution where services are charged based on the actual work done, eliminating the need for hefty salaries, benefits, and training costs associated with in-house staff.
Access to Expertise
Website maintenance is not just about updating content or fixing broken links; it encompasses security updates, SEO, backend support, and much more.
Outsourcing provides small businesses access to a pool of experts specialized in various areas of website maintenance. This expertise ensures that the website not only runs smoothly but also complies with the latest web standards and practices.
Time-Saving
For small business owners, time is a precious commodity. Outsourcing website maintenance frees up their time, allowing them to focus on core business operations without getting bogged down by technical issues.
This shift in focus can lead to better product development, customer service, and strategic planning.
Scalability
The needs of a website can change rapidly. Outsourcing provides the flexibility to scale the level of service up or down based on the business's evolving requirements.
This scalability is particularly beneficial for small businesses that experience seasonal fluctuations or are in a growth phase.
Proactive Approach
Professional maintenance services take a proactive approach to website management. This means regular updates, timely backups, and early detection of potential issues before they escalate into bigger problems.
Such proactive measures are crucial for minimizing downtime and ensuring a seamless user experience.
Enhanced Security
With cyber threats becoming more sophisticated, security is paramount for any website. Outsourcing maintenance to specialists ensures that the website is fortified with the latest security patches and measures.
This protection is vital not only for safeguarding the business’s data but also for maintaining customer trust.
Focus on Core Business Activities
Outsourcing website maintenance service empowers small businesses to direct their attention and resources towards their principal operations and growth strategies.
This allocation of tasks allows business owners and their teams to focus on developing new products, enhancing customer service, and expanding into new markets without being sidetracked by the technical intricacies of website upkeep.
It ensures that the foundational digital platform of the business is professionally managed, while the internal resources are optimized for innovation and core business objectives, thereby fostering a more productive and focused work environment.
Conclusion
In today’s competitive market, a well-maintained website is indispensable for small businesses. Outsourcing website maintenance offers a practical solution by providing cost savings, access to specialized expertise, and the ability to focus on core business strategies. As small businesses recognize these benefits, the trend towards outsourcing is set to grow.

Watcher's Expenses
I didn't major in accounting: I took three classes and it grinded my brain to a fine powder. However, after graduating with a business admin degree, being a former eager fan of their videos, and from a cursory glance over their socials, there's a lot to consider in their spending behavior that really could start racking up costs. Some of these things we've already noticed, but there are other things I'd like to highlight, and I'll try to break it down into the different categories of accounting expenses (if I get something wrong, let me know. I was more concentrated in marketing 🤷‍♀️). I'm not going to hypothesize numbers either, as that would take out more time than I'm willing to afford-- you can assume how much everything costs. Anyways, here's my attempt at being a layman forensic accountant:
Note: All of this is assuming they're operating above board and not engaging in any illegal practices such as money laundering, tax evasion, not paying rent, etc.
Operating Expenses
Payroll: 25+ staff salaries and insurance
Overhead Expenses
CEO/founder salaries
Office space leasing or rent (In L.A, one of the most expensive cities in the US)
Utilities (water, electricity, heating, sanitation, etc.)
Insurance
Advertising Costs
Telephone & Internet service
Cloud Storage or mainframe
Office equipment (furniture, computers, printers, etc.)
Office supplies (paper, pens, printer ink, etc.)
Marketing costs (Social media marketing on Instagram, Youtube, SEO for search engines, Twitter, etc. Designing merchandise and posters, art, etc. )
Human Resources (not sure how equipped they are)
Accounting fees
Property taxes
Legal fees
Licensing fees
Website maintenance (For Watchertv.com, Watcherstuff.com, & Watcherentertainment.com)
Expenses regarding merchandising (whoever they contract or outsource for that)
Inventory costs
Potentially maintenance of company vehicles
Subsequent gas mileage for road trips
Depreciation (pertains to tangible assets like buildings and equipment)
Amortization (intangible assets such as patents and trademarks)
Overhead Travel and Entertainment Costs (I think one of the biggest culprits, evident in their videos and posts)
The travel expenses (flights, train trips, rental cars, etc. For main team and scouts)
Hotel expenses for 7-8 people at least, or potentially more
Breakfasts, lunches and dinners with the crew (whether that's fully on their dime or not, I don't know; Ryan stated they like to cover that for the most part)
Recreational activities (vacation destinations, amusement parks, sporting activities etc.)
The location fees
Extraneous Overhead costs (not sure exactly where these fall under, but another culprit, evident in videos and posts)
Paying for guest appearances
Expensive filming & recording equipment (Cameras, sound equipment, editing software subscriptions, etc.)
The overelaborate sets for Ghost files, Mystery Files, Puppet History, Podcasts etc. (Set dressing: Vintage memorabilia, antiquated tech, vintage furniture, props, etc.)
Kitchen & Cooking supplies/equipment
Office food supply; expensive food and drink purchases for videos
Novelty items or miscellaneous purchases (ex. Ghost hunting equipment, outfits, toys, etc.)
Non-Operating Expenses
These are those expenses that cannot be linked back to operating revenue. One of the most common examples of non-operating expenses is interest expense. This is because while interest is the cost of borrowing money from a creditor or a bank, they are not generating any operating income. This makes interest payments a part of non-operating expenses.
Financial Expenses
Potential loan payments, borrowing from creditors or lenders, bank loans, etc.
Variable Expenses
Hiring a large amount of freelancers, overtime expenditure, commissions, etc.
PR consultations (Not sure if they had this before the scandal)
Extraordinary Expenses
Expenses incurred outside your company’s regular business activities and during a large one-time event or transactions. For example, selling land, disposal of a significant asset, laying off of your employees, unexpected machine repairing or replacement, etc.
Accrued Expenses
When your business has incurred an expense but not yet paid for it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(If there's anything else I'm missing, please feel free to add or correct things)
To a novice or a young entrepreneur, this can be very intimidating if you don't have the education or the support to manage it properly. I know it intimidates the hell out of me and I'm still having to fill in the gaps (again, if I've mislabeled or gotten anything wrong here, please let me know). For the artistic or creative entrepreneur, it can be even harder to reconcile the extent of your creative passions with your ability to operate and scale your business at a sustainable rate. That can lead to irresponsible, selfish, and impulsive decisions that could irreparably harm your brand, which is a whole other beast of its own.
My guess at this point is that their overhead and operation expenses are woefully mismanaged; they've made way too many extraneous purchases, and that they had too much confidence in their audience of formerly 2.93 million to make up for the expenses they failed to cover.
It almost seems as if their internal logic was, "If we make more money, we can keep living the expensive lifestyle that we want and make whatever we want without anyone telling us we can't, and we want to do it NOW, sooner rather than later because we don't want wait and compromise our vision." But as you can see, the reality of fulfilling those ambitions is already compromised by the responsibility of running a business.
And I wrote this in another post here, but I'll state it again: Running a business means you need to be educated on how a business can successfully and efficiently operate. Accounting, marketing, social media marketing, public relations, production, etc; these resources and internet of things is available and at your disposal. If they had invested more time in educating themselves on those aspects and not made this decision based on artistic passion (and/or greed), they would have not gotten the response they got.
Being a graphic designer, I know the creative/passionate side of things but I also got a degree/got educated in business because I wanted to understand how to start a company and run it successfully. If they’re having trouble handling the responsibility of doing that, managing production costs, managing overhead expenses, and especially with compensating their 25+ employees, then they should hire professionals that are sympathetic to their creative interests, but have the education and experience to reign in bad decisions like these.
Anyways, thanks for coming to my TedTalk. What a shitshow this has been.

KPMG audits the nursing homes it advises on how to beat audits
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (May 10), I’m in VANCOUVER for a keynote at the Open Source Summit and a book event for Red Team Blues at Heritage Hall and on Thurs (May 11), I’m in CALGARY for Wordfest.
Tumblr media
Auditors are capitalism’s lubricants, who keep the gears of finance capital smoothly a-whirl, allowing investors to move their money in and out of companies without having to go pore over their books and walk through their facilities. Without auditors, the gears of capitalism would grind themselves to dust:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/18/ink-stained-wretches/#countless
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/09/dingo-babysitter/#maybe-the-dingos-ate-your-nan
Unfortunately for capitalism, auditing is irredeemably broken. The Big Four auditors (PWC, EY, Deloitte and KPMG) have merged to monopoly, becoming “too big to fail” and “too big to jail.” These four gigantic firms have spun up fantastically lucrative “consulting” divisions that advise companies on how to cheat on their audits and attain incredible (paper) gains. The work of these “consultants” is worth far more than the accounting and auditing jobs the companies do, and the weaker the audits are, the more profitable the consulting is:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/04/aaronsw/#crooked-ref
This crisis has been a long time brewing. Back in 2001, the accounting/consulting giant Arthur Andersen was at the center of Enron’s fraud, which lit $11B in shareholder capital on fire. Enron had been making everyday people angry for years, engineering rolling blackouts and incredible energy-price gouging, but no one cares about working peoples’ complaints. By contrast, stealing $11B from rich people was something the authorities couldn’t ignore. They gave Andersen the death penalty, trying to teach the surviving accounting firms a lesson about what happens when you fuck with plutes.
But those other firms learned the wrong lesson: the collapse of Andersen was so disruptive that it soon became clear that the authorities would never take another giant consulting firm down, no matter how egregious its conduct was. They doubled down on crime, and then doubled down again.
It’s hard to pick a winner in the Big Four Accounting Firm Corruption Olympics, but KPMG is a strong contender, with a long history of just being monumentally inept and wrong. Back when Enron was unspooling, KPMG devoted itself to threatening people who linked to its website “without a license to do so”:
https://web.archive.org/web/20020207141547/http://chris.raettig.org/email/jnl00040.html
A couple years later, they declared war on wifi, trying to convince normies that wireless networks were an existential risk to human civilization:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2885339.stm
But there’s not much money in wifi scare stories or licenses to link. KPMG are good dialectical materialists, devoted to money over ideology, and boy did they figure out some wild ways to make money. For one thing, they figured out that they could get more accountants certified by cheating…on ethics exams:
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-kpmg-cheating-scandal-was-much-more-widespread-than-originally-thought-2019-06-18
KPMG’s top managers bribed regulators to give them the answer-sheets for ethics exams. What did they bribe those public employees with? Jobs at KPMG:
https://www.pogo.org/investigation/2020/01/how-accountants-took-washingtons-revolving-door-to-a-criminal-extreme
There’s hardly a month that goes by without another KPMG scandal somewhere in the world, with enormous monetary and social fallout. During the lockdowns, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government outsourced the creation and maintenance of ArriveCAN (a contact tracing app for people who entered Canada) to a grifter called GC Strategies, who billed millions for their services. GC Strategies didn’t do any work — instead, they paid KPMG $1,000-$1,500 day to hire freelancers to build the app. The app itself was a catastrophic failure, and that failure didn’t just embarrass the government — it also failed to protect Canadians during a once-in-a-century global pandemic. KPMG raked off a 30% commission:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/31/mckinsey-and-canada/#comment-dit-beltway-bandits-en-canadien
In the USA, KPMG helped Microsoft work up a radioactively illegal tax-evasion scheme. Microsoft poured the millions it saved by cheating on its taxes into dark-money operations that lobbied to defund the IRS so that KPMG and Microsoft could cook up even more illegal tax-evasion schemes:
https://www.propublica.org/article/the-irs-decided-to-get-tough-against-microsoft-microsoft-got-tougher
But KPMG doesn’t content itself with screwing over everyday people and rotting our democratic institutions — it also engages in the dangerous business of helping billionaires steal from millionaires. KPMG was the auditor that signed off on the scam “oil company” Miller Energy Partners, a fraud that operated for years thanks to KPMG’s rubber-stamp on its crooked books:
https://www.desmog.com/2021/06/03/miller-energy-kpmg-auditors-oil-fraud/
The company was run by serial fraudsters with long rapsheets for stealing millions. They staffed their C-suite with executives from disgraced companies that had been busted for running Ponzi schemes, issuing press releases praising those execs’ “proven track records in raising capital.” KPMG ignored every red flag, ignored the hundreds of millions in fraud on the books — and when the whole thing came crashing down, the responsible KPMG partner kept his job for years, until retiring with a full and fat pension.
More recently, KPMG made millions by confidently certifying the stability of a large regional bank, assuring investors and depositors that it was managing its risk and could be trusted. The name of the client that KPMG was so bullish on will be familiar to you: Silicon Valley Bank:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/kpmg-faces-scrutiny-for-audits-of-svb-and-signature-bank-42dc49dd
KPMG epitomizes the idea of Too Big To Fail and Too Big to Jail. Despite being at the center of virtually every major finance scandal, it continues to thrive and grow. Remember the Carillion bust, in which billions went up in smoke and swathes of privatized government services vanished overnight? Not only did KPMG sign off on fraudulent Carillion books, but it escaped fines for doing so — and got paid to help administer Carillion’s bankruptcy:
https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/uk-watchdog-fines-kpmg-24-mln-over-carillion-regenersis-audits-2022-07-25/
Despite this, KPMG continues to find willing buyers for its services. After all, when the sector is dominated by four giant, lavishly corrupt firms, there’s not much choice in the matter:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/29/great-andersens-ghost/#mene-mene-bezzle
This is bad news for the investor class, of course, but it’s even worse news for the people who rely on the services that KPMG certifies, even as it helps grifters destroy them. Every kind of business relies on audits, from transit to aviation to day-care to eldercare.
Here’s a scary one for you: in Australia, the job of auditing residential eldercare homes’ compliance with safety and anti-abuse rules has been outsourced to KPMG. While KPMG earns a mid-sized fortune from these audits, it earns far more advising the owners of residential aged care homes on how to beat those audits:
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/may/04/firm-performing-australian-aged-care-audit-also-charging-providers-for-expertise
KPMG says that the division that ensures the safety and dignity of elderly people is firewalled off from the division that advises companies on how to spend as little as possible on that safety and dignity — but KPMG also went to great lengths to keep the fact that it was selling services to both sides a secret.
Once the secret got out, an anonymous KPMG spokesmonster said, “When considering a request to perform an audit, we undertake a detailed process to ensure the engagement is free of conflicts.”
It’s hypothetically possible that this is true, but anyone who believes anything KPMG says is a sucker. The company’s rap-sheet goes back decades. This is, after all, a company that cheated on its ethics exams.

Small Business Website Hosting and Management Services
Running a small business in today’s digital age requires having a strong online presence. One crucial aspect of establishing that presence is having a well-designed and functional website. However, building and maintaining a website can be a daunting task, especially for small business owners who may not have the technical expertise or resources to handle it themselves. That’s where small business website hosting and management services come into play.
Tumblr media
What is Small Business Website Hosting?
Website hosting is the process of storing and making your website accessible on the internet. Small business website hosting services provide the infrastructure and technology needed to keep your website up and running smoothly. They offer server space, domain registration, email accounts, and other essential features to ensure your website is available to visitors around the clock.
Choosing the right hosting service for your small business is crucial. Factors to consider include reliability, speed, security, customer support, scalability, and affordability. Small business website hosting services understand the unique needs of small enterprises and offer plans tailored to their requirements.
Benefits of Small Business Website Hosting Services

They often provide SSL certificates, regular backups, and firewall protection to safeguard your data and your customers’ information.
5. Support: Small business hosting services offer dedicated customer support to assist you with any technical issues or questions you may have. This ensures that you have reliable assistance whenever you encounter challenges with your website.
Website Management Services
In addition to website hosting, many small business hosting services also offer website management services. These services take care of the day-to-day tasks involved in maintaining and updating your website, freeing up your time to focus on your core business activities.
Website management services may include:
– Content updates and modifications
– Regular backups and data protection
– Performance monitoring and optimization
– Search engine optimization (SEO)
– Design and layout enhancements
– Integration of new features and functionality
– E-commerce solutions
By outsourcing website management to professionals, small business owners can ensure that their website remains current, engaging, and fully functional without the need for in-house technical expertise.
Choosing the Right Small Business Website Hosting and Management Service
When selecting a small business website hosting and management service, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and goals. Evaluate factors such as pricing, features, customer reviews, and the provider’s reputation in the industry.
Additionally, assess the scalability of the service to ensure it can grow with your business. Look for a service that offers reliable customer support and has a track record of high uptime and security. Ultimately, the right service will empower your small business to establish a strong online presence and thrive in the digital marketplace.
In conclusion, small business website hosting and management services play a vital role in helping small enterprises establish and maintain a robust online presence. By providing reliable hosting, technical expertise, security, and website management solutions, these services enable small business owners to focus on what they do best while leaving the website-related tasks to professionals.
