The Boondocks #12: “Riley Wuz Here” | February 19, 2006 – 11:00PM | S01E12

Great episode! Riley gets in trouble for tagging a neighbor's house, so Granddad sends him to get art lessons to channel his creativity in a way that doesn't involve vandalism. Turns out Riley met this man while tagging said house, he supervised Riley and gave him some pointers. He's clearly meant to be a parody of Bob Ross, who had passed away at this point but was still in reruns on some PBS stations. I don't think he had yet received the pop culture revival that he is currently enjoying while he roasts in hell.

Bob Ross guy uses reverse psychology to get Riley legitimately into art. And he's good at it, too! He still tags houses, but now his pieces are garnering positive attention and accolades from the community. This all culminates in a pretty touching scene where Riley paints a big mural on the side of his own house of young Granddad and his now-deceased wife on their wedding day.

Or... well, there's a significant number of people who think it's actually Huey and Riley's parents, who aren't around and I don't know if the show explicitly states that they are dead or what. So, I guess Granddad is tearing up at the sight of his son and his wife? Or is he their mother's father? I don't really know, and I don't know if I or the show really cares. And I like that. There also doesn't seem to be a clear answer to this like. So, this moment is both The Boondocks “YOU ARE LISA SIMPSON” moment as well as Homer claiming he had seen somebody say goodbye to a shoe before. Anyway, and I'm probably repeating myself, this show is great and I was wrong to not watch it when it originally aired. Okay?

Oh yeah, there’s a b-story that Huey is watching “black” TV as an experiment and it makes him dumber. I don’t think it goes anywhere.
