Attorney Lafayette McKenne Hershaw (May 10, 1863 – September 2, 1945) was a journalist, lawyer, clerk, and law examiner for the General Land Office of the Department of the Interior. He was a key intellectual figure among African Americans in Atlanta in the 1880s and DC, from 1890 until his death. He was a leader of intellectual social groups in the capital such as the Bethel Literary and Historical Society and the Pen and Pencil Club. He was a strong supporter of W. E. B. Du Bois was one of the thirteen organizers of the Niagara Movement, the forerunner to the NAACP. He was an officer of the DC Branch of the NAACP from its inception until 1928. He was a founder of the Robert H. Terrell Law School and served as the school’s president.

He began his studies at Atlanta University in 1879 and received a BA from the school in 1886. He studied law at Howard University and received an LL.B. in 1892.

He belonged to the Oldest Inhabitants Association of the District of Columbia and was a trustee of Atlanta University. Along with frequently speaking at the Second Baptist Lyceum, the Congressional Lyceum, and as an officer of the Bethel Literary and Historical Society; he was president of the Shiloh Baptist Lyceum. He was elected head of the newspaper bureau of the National Afro-American Council. He was elected president of the Crispus Attucks Association and presided over a celebration of the anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. He was a member of Sigma Pi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities.

He began to become more involved in the American Negro Academy. He was a member of the executive committee of that body along with Kelly Miller, J. E. Moorland, Francis J. Grimké, A. U. Craig, F. H. M. Murray, and John W. Cromwell. He was elected treasurer under presidents Cromwell and then Arthur A. Schomberg.

“Sure,” he said. “If you are. They’re your family.”

Bitty snorted.

“My relatives, sure,” Bitty said. “But it means they’ll be here when you get back from your first roadie this season. You’re you wouldn’t rather have your home to yourself?”

“Your home, too,” Jack said. “And you’ll be here, right? So as long you don’t mind, why not?”

“Why would I mind?”

“Just … do you like these cousins?” Jack asked. “I mean, you don’t think they’re just using you?”

“Using me? You mean besides asking to stay here? How?”

“You know,” Jack said. “For your connections, money …”

“Jack, I hate to break this to you now, but I don’t have any money,” Bitty said. “It’s like the Samwell financial aid office knew how much money I had -- to the penny -- and made sure they got every last cent of it. I am bringing no money into this household.”

Jack shrugged.

“What’s mine is yours,” he said. “So yes, you have money. And you are a big name at every college in New England, even the ones that aren’t into hockey, because of --”

“The first out captain thing?”

“I was going to say winning the Frozen Four,” Jack said. “But probably both.”

“Anyway, no, the girls have always been fine,” Bitty said. “I mean, they’re five years younger so I don’t know them that well. They were 13 when I went to Samwell. I guess I’m more surprised that Aunt Connie and Uncle Bubba would let them stay with us since we’re living in sin.”

“Uncle Bubba?” Jack asked. “Never mind. They’re both looking at colleges in Boston?”

“Yeah,” Bitty said. “They’re twins, and they’ve always been in the same school. A lot of the time the same classes, because they’re both smart. So they decided they wanted to go to different colleges but try to be in the same city.”

“And Boston has plenty of options,” Jack said.

“Yup,” Bitty said. “I mean, Atlanta has options too, but if they want to get out of Georgia, good for them.”

By the time Jack left on his roadie, Bitty was glad to have his cousins’ visit to prepare for. He made sure the linens in the guest bedroom and bathroom were fresh, he bought flowers (at the supermarket, but still), laid in a supply of Coca-Cola, and and baked cookies before they arrived.

That helped take his mind off Jack being gone for three nights … which was fine, really. Last season, they almost never got to spend three nights in a row together at all. Bitty had been spoiled by spending the whole summer with Jack, and now he had to get used to having Jack gone almost as much as he was home. Maybe Bitty would spend a lot of time at the Haus 2.0.

But for now, he had Missy and Ellie coming for two nights and four college tours. Northeastern, Tufts, Boston University and Boston College. It was going to be exhausting, but at least Bitty knew his way around and was used to driving in Boston. Although it might make more sense to do the city ones on the T, and more fun for the girls. 

They arrived at Logan decked out in jeans and hoodies, with jackets over their arms, despite beautiful October weather. Bitty clucked to himself, but remembered how cold sixty degrees felt his first year in Massachusetts.

“What do y’all want to do besides visit the schools?” Bitty said. “Although I think that will take most of our time. And you know I live like an hour away from here, right?”

“We know, Di -- Eric,” Missy said. “Sorry. Aunt Suzanne said no one here calls you Dicky. I figured you might not like it anymore.”

“Anymore?” Ellie snorted. “Did he ever?”

“It’s fine,” Eric said. “I guess if I had my choice, you could call me Eric. Or Bitty. That’s what most people here call me.”

“You don’t mind that?” Missy asked. 

“No,” Bitty said. “It was what my team called me, and what Jack’s whole team calls me.”

“Speaking of,” Ellie said. “Any chance we’ll meet any hockey players?”

“Not Falconers,” Bitty said. “They’re on the road this week. Jack’ll be back very early Saturday, but of course you’ve met him.”

He led the way to the car and headed for a public lot halfway between Northeastern and Boston University.

“Is the traffic always like this?” Missy asked.

“What do you mean?” Bitty said. “It’s not as bad as Atlanta.”

“Maybe not as many cars,” Ellie said. “But they go every which way.”

After an introductory talk and a tour, Bitty took them to Amelia’s for Mexican food for lunch before repeating the routine at BU. Bitty found himself wondering what it would have been like to go to school in the middle of the city instead of in a college town like Samwell. Until now, all he’d seen of the campuses were their ice rinks.

He made them dinner at home, and enjoyed the cooking and washing up and listening to the girls chatter and gossip. It also gave him time to make a couple of pies for the following night.

The next day started with Tufts and ended at Boston College. Dinner was actually at Haus 2.0, where Ransom, Holster, Lardo and Shitty regaled Missy and Ellie with tales of Bitty’s misadventures as a frog.

“Pies just appear?” Missy said. “I know that feeling, around you and Aunt Suzanne. Somehow the baking bug missed Mom.”

“If you guys end up here, I’m sure Bits will deliver,” Holster said. “Having him around was half the reason we decided to stay in Boston. Another beer, Rans?”

Bitty, of course, was not drinking, since he was not only chaperoning his cousins but also driving. This would make three each for Ransom and Holster, which was … probably not good for their long-term health if they were doing it every day, but also not enough to get either of them drunk. Lardo had a beer with dinner, and Shitty disappeared onto the balcony and came back smelling of marihuana.

“Eric?” Ellie asked when they got in the car. “Did your friend go outside to smoke weed?”

“Uh … yes,” Bitty said. “Which is legal here, if you buy it from a dispensary and are over 21. Just so you know, it’ll still get you in trouble if not expelled from college.”

“No duh,” Missy said. “It’s not like we’ve never been around anyone who smoked weed before. I just didn’t expect you to hang around with potheads.”

“Shitty a pothead?” Bitty was indignant. Shitty did smoke pretty regularly, but he also was pulling top marks at Harvard Law, and Bitty rarely saw him too stoned to function responsibly. “I don’t think I’d use that word. He’s one of the smartest people I know, and if that’s how he relaxes, I’m not going to judge him.”

“Did you ever smoke weed?” Missy asked. 

“I’m not gonna answer that,” Bitty said.

“Pretty sure that is an answer,” Missy said.

“But don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone,” Ellie said. “What’s the deal with Ransom and Holster? Are they together? I couldn’t tell. Or are they available?”

“Not to you,” Bitty said. “You’re seventeen. They’re grown adults.”

“But they’re not together?” Missy persisted. 

Bitty shrugged. 

“I suppose it means what you mean by together,” he said. “They lived together the whole time I new them, got jobs together and moved in together after college, so I’d say their relationship is primary to both of them. But they also both date. One of the things I learned in college is that nothing is as black-and-white as lots of people seem to think. But those are lessons you’ll learn with people your own age.”

The girls fell quiet, and Bitty wondered if he’d been too harsh.

“Sorry,” he said. “It’s not for me to tell you what to do when you get to college. But for now, I have to keep an eye out for you. And if you want a long lecture on power dynamics in relationships, I can set something up with Shitty.”

By the time Bitty went to bed that night, he was glad his cousins came, and even happier that he would be taking them back to the airport to head home tomorrow. It might be nice if they ended up in Bostpn for school, but if that happened, they’d be busy with their own friends and lives, and he could just drop in with pie and sympathy from time to time. Teenagers were exhausting.

Bitty woke up when Jack came in, probably somewhere around 3 a.m., and promptly followed Jack’s instructions to go back to sleep. He slept better than he had since Jack left, cocooned in the warm bed with his warmer fiance. 

He didn’t even wake up when Jack, who by rights should be more exhausted than he was, got up in the morning. Or at least it appeared that way, when he rolled over to snuggle into Jack’s said and found only cool sheets.

It was clearly full daylight, so Bitty checked his phone. It was only 8:30, but probably time to get up if he was going to get the girls to the airport in time for their 12:30 flight. There should still be time for pancakes if he could get them up soon.

He washed up and headed for the kitchen, drawn by the sound of giggles, a little surprised that they were already up.

He almost couldn’t believe the sight that met his eyes: Ellie and Missy, attempting to cook (French toast, maybe?) in his kitchen, but overcome with laughter as Jack, clearly just returned from a run, tried to figure out who was who. He wasn’t helped by the way they kept switching names on him just to make it worse.

Bitty stepped into the kitchen and removed the smoking, empty skillet from the burner. 

“Ellie,” he said, pointing, “and Missy, didn’t your mother tell you not to leave a pan on a hot burner unattended?”

“We’re right here,” Ellie said. 

“And yet the pan was smoking,” Bitty said. “You also should ask before cooking in someone else’s kitchen.”

“We just wanted to make breakfast to thank you for letting us stay,” Missy said. “Mom said we should.”

“She said you should start cooking in my kitchen without asking?” Bitty asked, because Aunt Connie set the standard for possessiveness over her kitchen. Which, come to think of it, might be why Ellie and Missy didn’t have any kitchen sense.

“She just said we should do something,” Missy said.

“Well, I’ll consider myself thanked, and you two can go pack your things,” Bitty said. “Breakfast in twenty minutes.”

“Are you sure we can’t stay and help?” Ellie said. “We’re mostly packed.”

“Maybe you could teach us,” Missy said.

It was her eyes straying away to Jack that gave her away. 

“If you want,” Bitty said sweetly. “Jack can help, too.”

“Me?” said Jack, putting his water glassin the sink. “What do you need, bud?”

“Can you please…? Hmmm, I don’t know. Maybe put a shirt on?” Bitty asked. “You know, for kitchen safety and all that.”

TK thanks his Uber driver before opening the door of the car and stepping outside, grabbing his duffel bag and the plastic bag where he’s placed the cake box he’s picked up from Nothing Bundt Cakes as a surprise for Carlos. They’ve been too busy to see each other as much as they would have loved to the past week — the days leading up to the holidays are always the most hectic of the whole year, with the honorable exception of full moon nights. He wants to surprise his boyfriend on their last night alone before both their families come barging in for Christmas Eve — they will be spending the night at his dad’s, exchanging gifts with his mom, and then they will be heading out to San Antonio to spend Christmas Day with Carlos’ family.

TK can’t say he isn’t nervous about that last bit, maybe more than he is when he thinks of his mom and his dad under the same roof for two whole days — his mom will be flying out to New York on Boxing Day to get ready for some case or the other, always the busiest lawyer in the city. But he’s going to officially meet all of Carlos’ family at once on Christmas Day, and TK doesn’t know how that will go. Sure, he’s met them in bits and pieces before — Carlos’ mother Irene when she came down to take care of Carlos after the accident where he broke his arm, and Carlos’ sister Laura when she had to make a stop-over on her way back to Atlanta. But TK hasn’t spent that much time with them, and he’s yet to meet Carlos’ father. It’s not that he can’t handle meeting the in-laws, which he has done his fair share of times before — but it’s the first time he feels that creating a good impression is important. Because Carlos is the most important person in his life, and TK wants Carlos’ family to accept him, with his flaws and his sins, even though he knows that’s nearly impossible. It hasn’t happened before, with anyone. But then again, he has never met anyone like Carlos Reyes before.

He’s never felt a love so immense like he does for Carlos.

He opens the door to their apartment with his free hand, and the first thing he notices is the smell — sweet and savory, something that reminds him of his childhood spent in between Christmas cookies and marzipan. He smiles. “Carlos!” he calls out, balancing the cake box in his hand in order for it not to fall over. “I’m home!”

“In the kitchen!” he hears back, and there he heads, chuckling because Carlos really needed to reassure him of his whereabouts as though the smell alone hadn’t given it away. He saunters happily, cake box in hand, ready to put it in the fridge and order some Indian just like they planned so many days ago.

“What are you making? It smells delicious!” he says as he steps into the kitchen, only to be met with a sight that he hadn’t been expecting.

Carlos is standing next to the kitchen island, completely covered in flour and what looks like dough on his cheek, kneading something with his eyebrows knitted together as he works. All the countertops around the kitchen look like Christmas has already exploded on them — there are oven trays full of cookies, and TK can spy some apple pies and a couple of trays full to the brim of cupcakes. There’s even one bar of what looks like homemade chocolate nougat that TK can’t keep his eyes off.

“Sweetie?” he says in a tentative voice. “What’s all this?”

“I, ahm, I’ve been baking,” Carlos replies, slightly shrugging his right shoulder as he keeps on kneading. “Now I’m making a gingerbread house.”

TK carefully places the cake box he’s brought home on a clear spot on one of the counters before he comes to stand at the other end of the kitchen island, somewhat in front of Carlos. He’s actually working on what looks like a gingerbread house — he already has three out of four walls spread on an oven plate, and the ingredients to decorate the roof are already on a different tray.

“That much I can see,” he says, smiling as he leans in to drop a kiss on Carlos’ rebel curls falling onto his forehead. “But, honey—” He trails off as he brushes a couple of curls away from Carlos’ line of sight.

“Yeah?”

“How many of these have you made?” TK asks in a high-pitch squeal, gesturing around them to the place overflowing with baked goods. “Why have you even made five full trays of Christmas cookies?”

“I don’t know, I got a bit carried away baking for tomorrow,” Carlos tells him, lifting his gaze to look around him. He blushes when he takes in the sheer number of trays around, but he frowns at the Nothing Bundt Cake box. “What’s that?”

“That’s a surprise I got you,” TK explains. “But that doesn’t answer my question. You’ve made enough food to last us a whole year!” Carlos looks down and mumbles something that TK doesn’t catch. “Care to repeat that?”

“I said, I didn’t know what your mom would like so I made a bit of everything. I wanted to impress her.”

“First, this isn’t a bit of everything, this is the whole bakery home! And second, my mom’s already impressed by you. Please don’t tell me you’ve baked every single Christmas dessert recipe you know because you were stressed about having Christmas Eve dinner with my parents.” When Carlos doesn’t say anything in reply, just looks down and keeps kneading the dough, TK chuckles. “You already know my mom! And you work with my dad on a daily basis!”

“I don’t know your mom. She came down after you were shot for a week to take care of you, so that doesn’t count! We didn’t even live together back then!”

Before TK can retaliate, the oven timer goes off with a loud beeping sound. Carlos tries to get away but TK beats him to it and reaches the oven in time to lean in and peer through the window. “Is that roscón?” TK marvels. “Carlos Reyes, have you made roscón for my parents? That takes five hours at least!”

Carlos blushes even more violently than before. “Don’t say it like that,” he mumbles. “I just want this Christmas to be perfect.”

They already love you. They will absolutely adore you after this, mom has a sweet tooth that not even I can rival! And,” he adds conspiratorially, “you’re not the only one stressed about this. I’ve stress-bought all your family’s Christmas gifts, and now I have about three different options for each one of you when I know we said only one but—”

Carlos silences him with a kiss. “I guess we’ve both been a bit nervous about this,” he confesses with a low chuckle. TK nods and kisses him again.

“What are we going to do with all these pastries?”

Carlos laughs again, kissing the top of TK’s nose. “We’ll eat them, tomorrow. But for now, I need to get that roscón out before it gets too crusty.”

TK squeezes him tightly before he lets go of Carlos, sighing and leaning against the counter as he watches his boyfriend work around the kitchen. Now, he has the feeling that this will be the merriest Christmas so far, if only because he gets to spend it with Carlos Reyes.

Attorney James Madison Nabrit, Jr. (September 7, 1900 - December 27, 1997) was a renowned civil rights lawyer, Howard University president, and UN deputy ambassador. He argued for the voting rights of Blacks as well as school desegregation.

He was born in Atlanta. The son of a Baptist minister, he graduated from Morehouse College. He continued his studies and received a JD from Northwestern University.

He worked as an attorney in Houston, beginning in 1930, and for the next six years developed a successful law career. He moved to DC, where he became a member of Howard University’s law school faculty and established the first civil rights course for a US law school. He continued to teach while working on several significant civil rights cases.

Among those cases were Lane v. Wilson, concerning the registration of Black voters in Oklahoma, and Terry v. Adams, which focused on the right of African Americans to participate in primary elections in Texas. He argued successfully for both cases. He worked closely with prominent civil rights lawyers Charles Hamilton Houston, Thurgood Marshall, and other members of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund throughout his career.

He teamed with George E. C. Hayes to work on the landmark Bolling v. Sharpe case, a predecessor of Brown v. Board of Education. They lost the case in the DC Federal District Court before taking it to the Supreme Court, where they lost both appeals. Bolling v. Sharpe was decided under the due process clause in the Fifth Amendment, not under the Fourteenth Amendment.

He became dean of the Howard University Law School and was appointed president of the university. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him US Deputy Ambassador to the UN.

He returned to the university in 1967 amid student protests. Tensions ran high on campus when five faculty members and 18 students were dismissed for disruptive demonstrations. He was criticized by many students and alumni for his actions, and resigned as president (1969).

A British Band and a Nashville-based Singer/Songwriter Are Today’s New Artists

The Boy Least Likely To very kindly provided some background notes for their contribution to Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas:

‘Mince Pies and Brandy Butter, Morecambe And Wise, Bert and Ernie; some things were just meant to go together. And so it is with The Boy Least Likely To and the holiday song. They go so perfectly together it is as if the Christmas song was a concept thought up especially for them. Songs from their full-length album The Boy Least Likely To Christmas Special have become staples of alternative holiday soundtracks and playlists since its release in 2010. Like Christmas itself, the band’s songs are brimming with joy and excitement, at the same time as being undercut with a melancholy and a feeling of sadness, a longing for something absent or seemingly lost. ‘The First Snowflake”, which was the first of their big festive hits and even turned up in and episode of Grey’s Anatomy*. 

The band, made up of Jof Owen and Peter Hobbs, met when they were still at school and they grew up together in the middle of the English countryside in the small Buckinghamshire village of Wendover. They spent their teenage years scouring countryside car boot sales for rare Dexys seven inches and Lee Hazelwood albums. They released their debut album, The Best Party Ever, in 2005 to widespread critical acclaim, earning spots in both Pitchfork’s Top 50 albums and in the Rough Trade Shop top 10 of that year. The band’s second album The Law Of The Playground, resonated just as quickly as the first, with “When Life Gives Me Lemons” on the soundtrack to the hit Emma Stone movie, Easy A and more recently the Peter Rabbit movie’.

The suspect, he found out, was only 12. And the shoes she was trying to take, a mere $2. Between tears, the girl told Milton how even a $2 pair was too much for her family to afford and that she was just trying to do something nice for her 5-year-old sister. This is where this story takes a turn, where it goes from an officer responding to a to his entire department banding together to help a little girl. What he saw Milton asked the girl to show him where she lived. She took him to a small house in a rough part of town. The home was bereft of furniture. She told Milton theirs was a family of seven: mom, dad and five children. She explained her husband worked a lot and she stayed home. She couldn’t work because she couldn’t afford day care for the little kids. “I saw the conditions. There was no food in the house and the kids were there,” Milton told CNN. Milton went to a nearby pizza shop and picked up four large pies. He went back to the house and dropped it off. That was in February and Milton’s gone back a couple of times, dropping off diapers or clothes or checking up on them. “I have made mistakes in my life also,” he says. He knew he wanted to help. Soon after the shop -lifting incident, when Milton’s sergeant called him in, he thought he was in trouble. It was the opposite. The department heard about the little girl and decided to share her story. The support was overwhelming. It received numerous calls to help the family. Black History All Year 2020 . . After graduating from Morehouse College in 1956 with a BA degree in political science, Jackson briefly attended law school at Boston University before transferring to North Carolina Central University Law School where he earned a JD degree cum laude in 1964. Married two times, he was the father of seven children. Jackson was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities. After work with the National Labor Relations Board and a neighborhood law office, 30-year-old Jackson mounted an underfunded populist challenge to veteran Georgia segregationist Senator Herman Talmadge in 1968. Despite the odds against him, and the conservative racial climate in the state, he surprised many political observers by winning 200,000 votes, one third of the total vote, and garnering the support of many white small farmers.  He also ran well in Atlanta, reflecting the growing influence of African American voters. . . In 1969 Jackson was elected vice mayor of Atlanta, serving under progressive white businessman Sam Massell, who was Atlanta’s first Jewish mayor.  Upsetting expectations that he would serve several terms as vice mayor, he immediately challenged the incumbent.  The race became acrimonious and racially charged, but on October 16, 1973, at the age of 35, Jackson won with 59% of the vote, becoming the first African American to be elected mayor of a major southern city. This updated, wood-clad “golfers paradise” from 1980 has yet to get the call from buyers

High-profile local attorney Ken Nugent, known for his “One call, that’s all” slogan and advertisements, is trying to call it a day with another of his lavish ITP properties.

But it’s been slow going thus far.

Heading one of the Southeast’s largest personal injury law firms apparently has its rewards. Nugent in recent years has listed a sprawling Buckhead condo and now this equally wood-clad 8,000-square-footer off Northside Drive in ITP Sandy Springs, just across the Chattahoochee River from SunTrust Park.

Called a “golfers paradise” for the surprise greens around back (beside the tennis court and Pebble Tec pool), the property is listed with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties for $3,950,000.

At that pricing stratosphere, few properties in metro Atlanta fly off the market, but Nugent’s updated six-bedroom from 1980 has been available since early March.

Nestled on nearly 3 tree-filled acres, the residence is described collectively as a work of understated elegance, marrying “old world architectural details” with handy updates such as smart-phone-controlled lighting and sound.

Perks include a wine room encased in steel glass doors and a bourbon bar, a kitchen island finished in honed marble, a home generator (hurricane season approaches, after all), new marble-clad bathrooms, and those soothing pool waterfalls.

Records indicate the estate last traded in 2016 for $2.8 million even.

Attorney Vernon Eulion Jordan Jr. (August 15, 1935 – March 1, 2021) was a business executive and civil rights activist who worked for various civil rights movement organizations before becoming a close advisor to President Bill Clinton.

He has become known as an influential figure in American politics.

He was born in Atlanta to Mary Belle (Griggs) and Vernon E. Jordan Sr. He had a brother, Windsor. He was a cousin of James Shaw, a musician who is professionally billed as The Mighty Hannibal.

He grew up with his family in the segregated societal cosmos of Atlanta. He was an honors graduate of David T. Howard High School. Rejected for a summer internship with an insurance company after his sophomore year in college because of his race, he earned money for college for a few summers by working as a chauffeur to former city mayor Robert Maddox, then a banker. He graduated from DePauw University. He earned a JD at Howard University School of Law. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternities.

He returned to Atlanta to join the law office of Donald L. Hollowell, a civil rights activist. The firm, including Constance Motley, sued the University of Georgia for racial discrimination in its admission policies. The suit ended with a Federal Court order demanding the admission of two African Americans, Charlayne Hunter, and Hamilton E. Holmes.

He became directly involved in activism in the field, serving as the Georgia field director for the NAACP. From the NAACP, he moved to the Southern Regional Council and then to the Voter Education Project.

He became the executive director of the UNCF. He was president of the NUL.

Mrs. Chase remembered, in Mr. Hoekstra’s book, that then-lawyer and activist and later U.S. Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall “would come and eat his gumbo and crawfish on the floor,” because of the number of gathered supporters. And she noted that Martin Luther King, Jr., “didn’t come to eat or drink ...It’s like he was always on a mission.”

“Those who once belittled restaurateur Mrs. Chase for being just a cook “[didn’t] realize I’m feeding a lot of people so they can do what they have to do,” she told Mr. Hoekstra. That was the way in which she, Mrs. Gilmore, and the Paschals were able to support Reverend King and the movement...But nonetheless, “[you] have to make a difference,” Mrs. Chase said. “Martin Luther King died for me to work.”

“Started in 1947 near the Atlanta University Center, Paschal’s restaurant would go on to become a hub of civil rights activism, with the founders employing student sit-in demonstrators, bailing protesters out of jail, and providing food and meeting space to multiple organizations. Some participants referred to it as their second home, and the restaurant even earned the moniker “Black City Hall.”

“In his book Southern Food & Civil Rights: Feeding the Revolution, historian Frederick Douglass Opie describes this new Paschal’s as a white tablecloth restaurant for middle- and upper-class African-Americans who saw it as their first choice for a Sunday meal. It wasn’t by chance that Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists saw Paschal’s as a natural meeting place and de facto headquarters.”

“Restaurants like Paschal’s were successful because they were a part of their community, Opie says. And while plenty of other business owners avoided sticking their necks out by associating with controversy, Paschal’s was part of a trend of black-owned restaurants that played a fundamental role in supporting the civil rights movement, such as Dooky Chase’s in New Orleans and the Big Apple Inn in Jackson, Mississippi.”

“The Paschal brothers provided bail money and food for students jailed while protesting Jim Crow laws in Atlanta,” Opie writes. Once students were released, they’d head straight to the restaurant to meet up with their families for free chicken sandwiches and sodas. Hours were extended to accommodate the reunions. “Many times, the bailed-out marchers sat bent over chairs,” James Paschal recounts in his memoir. “Their heads rested on the table or their tired bodies dropped in heaps on the carpeted floors in various corners of the restaurant.”
