Marc, underneath the sink you should have two shut-off valves turn them off. (Turn them Clockwise to turn off the water.) 

​It’s always recommended to turn the water off before commencing any work. I also usually use 1/4 turn, Brass Craft Angle stops, when replacing the water shut-offs.

If those don't turn off, there should be a Main Water Shut-off.

The water main is usually by the front of the house or by the front where the hose bibb is.

(By coincidence. Yesterday, I replaced a shut-off valve that was the old style. Globe valve. With a Ball valve in the front yard. I also usually like to check the water pressure. Because if it's too high, I will recommend a water pressure regulator to be installed. )

If it is a ball valve, then turn it 1/4 turn, and it will turn off the water.

If there is a handle like a wheel, then turn it counter-clockwise GENTLY to see if it still works.

Sometimes they can break if it’s old.

Just make sure you don’t have a recirculating pump?

If you do, it would be next to the water heater.

If there is a recirculating pump, all you have to do is is disconnect the pump or turn it off; otherwise, it will keep running and burn out.

If you don’t have a recirculating pump, then don’t worry about it.

Although if it’s on the hot side, (The Leak.) you might be able to turn the water off at the water heater if the valve is in working order.

I would also recommend calling an emergency plumbing service.

I believe that the Element is probably bad, or the wiring has come loose, or maybe even some water made it short out ( this is caused by a loose connection on the top of the Water heater, then trailing down and causing a short).

I would rather say WHAT CAN IT COST YOU?? If you don’t REPAIR it the right way. The water valve or water shut-off valve.

So that the valve doesn’t leak and or cause a flood. Or starts a slow water leak underneath a cabinet. And goes unnoticed for a while. And can cause some serious WATER DAMAGE. 

EITHER WAY, suffice to say that sometimes using some. Foresight (if I might say) of the consequences. It is something to think about. 

Food for fooder. (Something to think about??) 

Would you change your CAR BRAKES with the guy who works at a factory during the week and can work on your car on the weekend?? 

Would you have your tooth checked out by a backroom unlicensed dentist?? 

Would You have Surgery with a backroom unlicensed doctor? 

So see My Friend it’s not just what it costs for a plumber to have the work performed in a professional manner. But RATHER WHAT IT CAN COST if You don’t have a professional do the work. 

And no I am not talking about a botched surgery or faulty brake work. 

P.s. To repair a water shut-off underneath a sink around a 100. bucks. Plus parts. Plus KINDLY READ THE FOLLOWING ABOUT ESTIMATES. 

There again I always give FREE Estimates. So I would recommend you get at least Three Estimates. Maybe even over the phone or take a picture of the problem and send it to the plumbing contractor. So they can give you an idea of the cost? 

And look for someone who has an excellent record. Maybe it is A+ RATED on the B.B.B. and is 5 STAR Rated on the Internet and maybe has Awards for EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. That is if you're going to look Online.

A Backflow preventer. Installed on your sewer MAIN DRAIN LINE. Usually for instance like in the front yard on the SEWER MAIN before it goes out to the street. This Will stop anything from coming back into the house.

Basically it has a flapper inside, looks like a coupling with a flapper inside. Which in some cases certain houses get flooded out often. And this prevents this from occurring. 

The work should be done by a professional. 

There are actually several types of water backflow preventers that can be used on a house, for instance, a backflow preventer on a hose bibb. (Or where you connect the water hose outside in the yard.) 

So nothing goes back into the house and does not contaminate the Water Supply. Or Backflow preventers on your irrigation…

When you see out in the yard PVC piping or sticking out of the ground with valves. Those are backflow preventers. 

They will usually be a minimum of 12" inches above the ground. This is for the PREVENTION, of Contamination of the Potable water source. 

Consequently, you have many situations that this is applicable to like water backflow prevention device’s in the public venue. etc...

Honestly, I have BAD NEWS for you Ben. I would Really not Recommend, The Plumbing Field. Unless You Apply the FOLLOWING FRIEND. The Following Good and Bad Reasons.

The Pros and Cons:

1. Most People do Not Like to Crawl underneath Houses. And in Attics.

(You Can Wear KNEE PADS for your KNEES Get GOOD ONES. ALL LIKE A SPONGE TYPE.

And as far as working in attics preferably early in the morning then stop when it gets too HOT and go back in the evening. OH AND USE A PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER OR A COUPLE OF BIG FANS. This is a MUST, ESPECIALLY in THE SUMMER.) 

2. Most Plumbers Deal with Drain's work. And Unless, you have a strong stomach?? (Well You can also wear a MASK. And when there to BAD I just Turn those Down.) 

3. Some Companies, make you work on weekends, nights, etc.. 

( You can change company)

4. The first couple of years is Grunt Work. The Pick and Shovel were my Best Friends for several years. (This is a MUST.) 

5. Basically your the Gopher for the first few years. ( Same as above.) 

6. In order to be proficient in sizing or laying out a plumbing system. You have to go to a R.O.P. or Job Training (P.H.C.C.) to Learn the basics AND INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED AND HEATING. Usually for TWO + Years. 

7. If you ever go out on your own. You have to know about. "How To Do Marketing." 

OK, Finally!!! The Pros: 

Those of us who stay WITH IT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. (Myself for over 35 + Years.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. TO ALWAYS DO EXCELLENT WORK. YES, ALWAYS!!

And YOU WILL BE CLASSIFIED WITH A FIVE STAR RATING ONLINE, ON GOOGLE AND YELP, ETC... an A+ RATED on THE B.B.B. 

1. People will call you all the time it's Sunday Today and I got at least four or five calls to go do some work. ( I scheduled two for Tomorrow. SEVERAL WHERE EMERGENCIES. But this takes time.)

5. Like I said Unless You Really like it go for it.

AND ALWAYS CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR WORK. Go The Extra Mile... Whether You're Roughing in A Toilet to a house or an entire Plumbing System to a Hospital Building or to A Hotel(s)... Always Check and Check your work that it is perfect. Or to the Best of Your Ability.

1. GO TO SCHOOL FOR PLUMBING ( I went to the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Contractors Association. Training in 1984.) 

2. LEARN INTERNET MARKETING. OR HOW TO MARKET YOURSELF ONLINE. I went to a FREE SCHOOL With over 100 Computer Classes. For Three Years In the evenings Mostly.   At North City Campus on Aero Drive in San Diego California. 

And I took Twenty Five courses. (Website Design, Word press, Social media marketing, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter And Other High Authority Platforms to Link From, or Post from, Etc... 

Oh and I Studied S.E.O. And still, Study Daily For OVER THIRTEEN + YEARS ).

3. Read the book by Dale Carnegie "How To Win Friends and Influence People." And Then Read it Again..... Listen to People, Let Them Talk, People like to Hear There Name, Be Polite, Be Kind.

How do you repair a broken drainage line

Repairing a Drainage Pipe is really the easiest thing that you can do, well that is if you have the tools and you can read a little and maybe even watch a video or two about it Like on YouTube.

Replacing or repairing a Piece of Cast-iron Pipe. 

1. USE Safety Glasses when cutting Cast Iron Piping. 

2. Use a Grinder, that has a Diamond Blade. I usually pay about 14.00 bucks at the Home Depot for the Blade and use a DE Walt Grinder about 59.00 bucks for the Grinder. 

3. Then Measure the pipe from end to end (If it's a straight piece of pipe. If fittings are needed then use accordingly the right turns). And cut ABS Plastic pipe 1/4" of an inch less so it fits in between pipe connections, (You can usually just cut ABS Plastic Pipe with a regular hand saw). 

4. Use what is called a Stainless Steel band, which costs maybe 3.50 each Stainless steel band. 

5. Tighten the No-Hub Stainless Steel Bands with a 1/4" Nut driver, Fairly Snug. 

6. If Pipe is hanging for instance underneath the house then strap every five feet with Plumbers tape to support pipe. Making sure you have a pitch or drop 1/4" per foot, use a torpedo level. Water will only flow if it has a drop or pitch. 

7. Always play on the side of safety, by that I mean use common sense, for instance, if the ground is wet, be careful with the extension cord. Use cardboard as something to crawl on. ETC. 

8. Check for Leaks.

How do you fix a leaky toilet base?

Step by step on How to fix a leaky toilet leaking from the base.

Turn Water OFF. Usually, just turn the shut-off valve or angle stop off.

Remove the toilet and remove the old wax ring and set a new wax ring (wear rubber gloves). And install New toilet bolts. And a new water supply line.

If the toilet rocks back and forth or side to side place rubber shims on side of toilet so it won’t rock.

Connect toilet and seal base with caulking.

Check for leaks.

Also, check around the toilet tank to make sure the leak is not coming from the toilet tank bolts to the toilet bowl. And also check the water supply;y line for any leaks.

While many persons may not use a new Water Supply Line but opt for using the old one. I will mention the reasons I prefer to use a new water supply and always a new wax ring and toilet bolts. 

The Water Supply line has rubber ends at first they are concave or like a pyramid, so it provides a good seal. But once these rubber seals are broken they can leak if reused. 

As far as the wax ring this is self-explanatory it made of wax and will get compressed. The toilet bolts unless they are in really Good Shape. And difficult to remove and are in still really good shape, that's the key. I sometimes will leave the toilet bolts. But their again it really is better to always remove them and replace also. One last thing check everything a couple more times. 

I always recommend to let a professional do the work.
