Every Night is Ghoul's Night

Summary: Ken leads the way to the Real World to join Barbie for a new holiday he doesn't quite understand. Once he arrives, he learns that most things in this place are hard to understand.

WC: 1.4k + there's a few 4th wall breaks so if that is hard for u don't read this!! ken goes to the real world for a Halloween party and people there have seen the barbie movie

AN: i'm leaving town for like 9 days on the 18th and i just wanted to write something silly before i left!!! after seeing the movie my friend and i talked about being barbie and ken for halloween and it crossed my mind that that would probably confuse him lol. ps thank u for all ur kind words omg!!! i love ken so much and u guys make me want to just keep writing about him CRYING EMOJI!!! thank u seriously wtf u guys are so nice to me wtf .

He really was trying to understand it all. This felt like Patriarchy all over again. Turns out Halloween is not about tiny black sky dogs coming to bite you to assert their dominance (allegedly called “bats” like baseball), nor is it about evil vegetables that come to life and are filled with fire. Wild, I know.

“It’s okay you guys, I know what I’m doing, I’ve done this before.”

Ken stuck out a dismissive hand, reminding the rest of the Barbies (and the Kens and Allen) that he’s been to the Real World (and even found his way back all by himself!) as he led the way. He wanted them to feel at ease – he remembered how worried he was the first time he went to the Real World. It was not like he expected at all.

He reassured them he definitely knows what's up. Except that he doesn’t. And he didn’t last time either.

One (very long, as the passenger Barbies and Kens and Allen well exceeded the hundreds) car-rocket-boat-rv-bike-jetski-rollerblade trip later and Ken was met with Barbie in Venice Beach, just like last time.

“Hi Ken! Hi Barbie! Hi Ken! Hi Barbie! Hi Barbie! Hi Ken!”

He was so happy to see her and wanted to hear all about how she’d been and what she'd been up to (as well as thank her for inviting him and everyone over), but that must wait, lest he misunderstands Halloween any longer.

He was on a mission, that’s for sure.

All of the crew skated alongside Barbie, following her to her sorority house. Ken didn't know what that was, but he figured it didn't have to do with Halloween, so he wasn't interested. They were throwing a giant blowout party with all the students (and planned choreography, and a bespoke song) for 'Halloween', whatever that was.

His original costume was a vampire but he scared himself in the mirror and cried so he settled instead for a cowboy (not that that had to be a costume, he liked to look like that anyways).

It would’ve been more fitting to dress as a detective the way he wanted so desperately to know what all of this meant. The decorations were… so dark, literally zero sparkles, all of the people at the party looked badly injured, the music had words he’s never heard before, and the fruit punch tasted horrible – like a burning kind of horrible – none of it made any sense to Ken. And the girls were scary too.

They were all touching him and laughing. He couldn’t tell if they were laughing at his confusion or just having fun, but something about it felt weird. They were looking at him in a way he didn’t understand, and he very much sensed an undertone of violence.

“You were soo good in the movie, Ken!”

He couldn’t tell you how many times he’d heard that tonight because he had stopped counting after 20 (he can’t count higher than 20). All the girls saying that to him were wearing Barbie’s clothes, like they had borrowed them from her. He didn’t know why. Wasn’t tonight about dressing up? That’s just what Barbie wore everyday back home. Even the Palazzo pants!

And what movie? The God Father? Why did everyone keep bringing up The Movie™ like he was supposed to know what they were talking about?

He excused himself to further analyze the situation, his eyes squinting and shifting, taking in all the information. The books he read back home said a lot of stuff about magic and evil spirits, but all he knew about magic was from Magic Ken’s earring, let alone what an ‘evil spirit’ was. None of this was appealing, and if he was honest, it all sort of frightened him. Who wants to hang around waiting for Patriarchy guys to jump out and scare you all night?

Which they did. For who knows how many times (he stopped counting at 20). He knew this time they were definitely laughing at him, so excused himself.

The air was cold and the lull of the music and people talking from inside spilled everywhere he went. He couldn’t escape it. It hurt his ears, but at least it wasn’t as loud out here.

Sat on the front step outside under twinkling orange lights was a girl wearing nearly the same costume as him.

He noticed she looked like she wasn’t enjoying herself much either, her chin resting in her palms folded over her lap. The flowers embroidered on her Cowgirl shirt matched his. Even the pattern at the base of his bell-bottoms was the same on her suede skirt.

He stood beside her hesitantly, careful to not disturb her – and also worried she would try to scare him like everyone else had.

“Sorry, is it okay if I sit here? This isn’t going how I thought it would.”

“Oh, parties are for sure the worst part about Halloween.”

Ken’s head tilted to the side, curious.

“Worse than bat?”

You smiled at him, patting the porch next to you, gesturing for him to join.

“You mean bats? Like fruit bats? I think they’re cute.”

“Cute?! Bats are much more dangerous than people realize. Even I know that. You know, Zoologist is not even my job. And it is not Pumpkin Carver, which is a common misconception. Yeah – ‘cause actually my job? It’s just–”

“Beach? And what a good job you do at it? I saw the movie.”

You watched as his brow furrowed.

“What movie? Everyone keeps talking about some movie, did I miss something? All we have at home is The Wizard of Oz and The God Father and neither of those have beach.”

“Oh my gosh, you haven’t seen it? You don’t even know?”

“Know what?”

“Is that even legal? Can Mattel release this without, like, asking for your permission?”

“Permission for what?!”

You took his hand, standing up. He followed suit, proving to be much taller than you’d expected. He kind of towered over you – and you had boots on (to complete the Ken look, of course).

“C’mon, I’ll show you, but it’s going to be really weird to watch yourself and it will probably make you have some sort of existential crisis where you realize you were created by someone in the 60s.”

His face screamed confusion, but he followed you anyway, the two of you strolling through the damp rain-soaked streets from this afternoon’s storm. The theater was only a few blocks away so you didn't mind walking – and it was nice to see the decorations and lights through the windows from parties.

“Hey, did you notice we’re matching!”

“Yeah, Ken, I’m dressed as you.”

He stopped walking, his boot spurs scraping the pavement. You stopped too, turning to face him.

Tears were welling up in his eyes.

“You… You dressed up… as me?”

“Yeah. So did he. And him, and her, and them too.”

You pointed to some of the trick-or-treaters (and even their parents) that walked on the sidewalks beside you. He hadn’t noticed, but you were right. All of them… All of them were dressed as him. And even he knew choosing a costume was a very important – maybe the most important – part of Halloween.

“You mean… I’m cool enough that people here in the Real World want to look… like me?”

His eyes were shiny and huge like a cartoon character. He looked ridiculous, falling apart right here in the road, the glow of the streetlamps glittering around him, but it did pull at your heartstrings a little.

“Ken… You don’t get it. You’re an icon right now.”

“I don’t know what that word means.”

“Like… this movie. Everyone saw it to just have fun with their friends but you really changed a lot of people’s perspectives on some really important stuff. Mojo Dojo Casa Dreamhouses were flying off the shelves – gosh, you were even the most popular tattoo! You taught people something here – showed them a part of themselves they didn't know how to put words to.”

“What is a tattoo?”

You remembered it too, the first time you saw it and laughing before watching your friends bawl their eyes out towards the end. Here in The Real World you had heard about Skipper (although N-SYNC was a surprise…) so you knew it was possible, but it never dawned on you that the Barbies and Kens had no idea that you were all watching. Except Allen, for some reason.

You watched as he just got more and more confused, taking his hand once again and guiding him to the theater.

“Hey… is that a picture of me?”

“Yes, Ken, that’s an advertisement for the movie.”

He really didn’t have any idea.

“Two tickets for Barbie please!”

The guy in the booth was dressed as a vampire, Ken’s decidedly mortal enemy as of the last 24 hours. He looked awestruck.

“Is that Ryan Gosling?”

The two of you replied in unison;

“Who’s Ryan Gosling?”

Best and Worst of Both Worlds (part 40)

Tw: like really bad sickness, doctors dismissing symptoms, general themes of hopelessness, shorter chapter than usual

Part 41

You were woken up by the feeling of fingers running through your hair and a presence right beside you.

You know it's Yves, so you snuggled deeper into him. Which earned you a kiss on the crown of your head.

"(Name)." You cracked open an eye and looked up to see Yves's kind eyes. Yves has changed his clothes that fit more into his usual style; a simple turtleneck and a pair of smart palazzo pants.

"It's time for you to eat, my dear." You struggled to sit up, but the pull of sleepiness proved too much for you. So, you flopped back onto him, latching onto his chest. Yves wrapped his arms around you again and buried his face in your hair.

You groggily told him that you're not hungry and you simply wanted to cuddle some more.

"We could do that after your meal." He mumbled, closing his eyes in bliss as well.

You said no, you wanted to bask in his touch now. Vibrations can be felt when he hummed in response.

"How spoiled." Hissed Yves with mock distaste. "But, I wouldn't have you any other way." He continued, softening his tone.

You grinned, feeling his hands rub soothing circles on your back.

"I will give you ten more minutes. Then, you must eat. Did I make myself clear?" You nodded, pressing your face against him. A chuckle reverberates through his ribcage.

You relaxed even more, and enjoyed the attention you were receiving. Whereas Yves had a lot on his mind.

It's been a day since he last stepped foot into the courthouse or prison, and he should be discharging you today.

Your family back in your home country still doesn't have an inkling of any idea about what you went through. While Yves is pleased that you're completely relying on him, it also worries him that your support system is practically non-existent.

Despite being possessive over you, he also knows that you're still young and a human, you need the presence of other relationships to develop healthily. Yves wouldn't want to shorten your life expectancy nor would he want to fry your neurons just because he was selfish during your formative years.

He also wanted that domesticity where you would introduce him to your parents, and it becomes his duty to charm them. Not that it's of any challenge of him to do so.

He twirled your hair around his fingers as he pondered the reality around him. He stopped when he heard a change in your breathing. You fell back asleep.

Yves sighed and rested his hand next to your head, Checking the clock in the room.

You're not physically starving, and neither is this a sign of some serious underlying cause. Why not let you rest against him a little longer?

He pulled the blanket to your shoulders before snuggling closer.

Mr. Jones lost almost everything when Evangeline let her mask slip that day. He lost his daughter and his wife; they fought and fought over the matter, where Mr. Jones mostly defended his little girl's actions. She refused to acknowledge that she was partially at fault as well, for not paying attention to Evangeline's behavior.

His wife demanded to get a divorce, and they were still living together in the same house. But sleeping in separate rooms. She would have moved back into her mother's home, but they had no space for her. Seeing that Mr. Jones is unlikely to hurt her out of rage, she stays until she can afford to start the process of separation and get her own place.

The legal fees for Evangeline devastated their combined savings, and both of them had to take up extra hours of work just to put food on the table. It's for the best, this limits the interaction between them at home.

Mr. Jones undoubtedly loved his wife, so it felt like his world was crumbling when she started looking away. He missed their morning talks, the love between them and their daughter. Tears were shed, but he had to keep them under control if he wanted to keep his remaining clients. Customers started dropping him after learning about his daughter's deeds, not wanting to associate themselves with a relative of a depraved criminal.

The ones who stayed are either clueless or not as concerned about their reputation. The company that hires him to work as a professional chauffeur is notably withholding customers from him, most likely due to them hearing about the case too.

The couple disagreed on everything after that fateful day, there were verbal fights daily and unbearable tensions between them. The house felt more like a concrete box with no air holes, so there were days Mr. Jones would even sleep in his car.

However, one day, there was something that they could finally agree on. And that is a beautiful gift hamper addressed to the Jones family.

It was from Yves, containing expensive wines, luxury chocolates, imported perfumes, an exquisite, living room display piece, a set of crystal glassware, and shiny jewelry. This sympathy gift was surely not cheap nor easy to put together, the items are either rare to come by or custom-made.

There was a sealed envelope inside, it made both husband and wife cry upon reading his printed letter with his name embossed onto it.

It said,

It has been a tumultuous time for all persons involved. I can only imagine the anguish you must have felt as parents. There will be differences between the two of you regarding this, conflict is to be expected. Despite what Evangeline has done, she deserves a whole and loving family. Please accept this as a gift of sympathy. Wishing you strength and understanding, with the courage to overcome the turbulence as a team. -Yves.

They embraced each other, forgiving for each other's transgressions and apologizing for their mistakes as well. Mr. Jones's wife retracted her request for a divorce and expressed regret for even bringing that up. Yves is right, they have to stay together for their daughter. Evangeline needs them more than ever, they cannot let the family fall apart.

Both of them felt the weight of their guilt crushing their bones. Yves is such a kind man for caring about their wellbeing although his partner is a victim of a horrible crime done by their child. It was such a nice gesture, they thought he had a heart of gold that withstood the blows of the steely mallet of cruelty. They wished so badly for this to never happened, they wished to make it right but they couldn't afford to. They had no idea how to. Especially when Yves filed for a restraining order against them shortly after.

So they carried on. Appreciating the goodies and savoring them. Among the pristine jewelry, there was a suncatcher with charming little gems woven in intricate patterns. Mr. Jones found it quite nice and decided to hang it on his rear-view mirror. It garnered quite a handful of compliments from his clients and friends alike. There is a gorgeous necklace that pairs well with all his wife's outfits, so she would wear them regularly and receive praise from her coworkers.

The piece of decor really helped to bring the living room together, the couple would catch themselves smiling at it, as the item reminded them of Yves's goodwill.

The glassware made the gifted wines taste better by elevating their appearance, they sounded delightful too when clinked together.

Eventually, his wife moved back into the master bedroom, the lit candles from Yves's basket smelled heavenly and relaxed their nerves especially when they had rough days at work.

They were enjoying them too much to connect the dots.

They thought the clumps of hair that fell in the showers were due to stress with all the legal shenanigans going on. The frequent headaches and strange sores that appeared around the chest of Mr. Jones's wife, and Mr. Jones's forehead were probably due to the immense pressure they were facing due to financial instability.

They worked long hours every day, so it made sense to feel fatigued and dizzy sometimes. Except it isn't normal to feel it almost daily.

The frequent vomiting and diarrhea must have been due to stress. It couldn't be from the chocolates, that were eaten weeks ago! The doctors told them that their weakened immune system from overworking made them susceptible to the most rudimentary of diseases. They're just unlucky to have caught a stomach bug from somewhere.

That explains the frequent fevers too, they're hindering their ability to work. Mr. Jones kept losing clients because they also fell ill with similar symptoms. He was double-masked, but nothing seemed to stop the spread of this mystery virus.

The tests showed nothing out of the ordinary for them, except the bacteria or virus of the illness they were suffering at the time. They felt horrible for thinking Yves had tampered with the food, especially after sending it to a lab for analysis to come back negative for any poisons or biohazardous materials.

They had their house tested for mold. Nothing. The husband and wife had to spend a weekend off to try and locate whatever was causing their prolonged sickness. They cleaned everything, from top to bottom, and eradicated every particle of dust in their home. Still, it persists.

The couple couldn't smell, hear, see, or feel anything out of the ordinary, it is making them go insane. They couldn't figure out for the life of them, what is slowly leading them to their death?

They're tired. Too tired to wonder why their electronics are glitching out and sometimes even shutting down randomly. Their cameras are weirdly taking fuzzy pictures, this is especially annoying to Mrs. Jones, when she has to scan a photo of a document only to come out distorted and illegible.

They're exhausted. Too exhausted to question the doctors who kept telling them that they were fine, they must have been simply too stressed. The only remedy was to stop working as much and worrying too much. Fully believing the couple would bounce back to full health when they heed their advice. Thinking that their immune system would regain strength to fight against the constant infections. The professionals were too busy, too apathetic to look a bit closer. To peek into the microscope once more.

They would have found unusual alterations in their red blood cells' DNA and white blood cell count. But they didn't, dooming the Jones to a terrible fate.

Mr. Jones kept forgetting his routes, stumbling over his words as he would experience bouts of confusion. Mrs. Jones would misremember where she put her important documents or the agreed time when she had to meet her supervisors.

The couple has lost a substantial amount of weight, they were ghoulish and sickly, finding it a challenge to even handle their own body weight. They're in constant agony every minute, and neither can sleep it off or ignore the pain, there isn't much they can do without knowing the cause of their misery.

But they kept going on. They have to for the sake of their family. For the sake of Evangeline.

The Jones only has a couple more weeks to find out what is causing these before it's too late. However, being this severely mentally and physically incapacitated led them to miss a laughably straightforward solution of buying a Geiger Muller Counter. Especially when Mr. Jones knew Yves has a strong background in mathematics and physics.

Mr and Mrs Jones held onto each other as they closed their eyes after retiring early for the day, praying that this wouldn't be their last night in this world.

Vamptember Day 3

Prompt: Protection @vamptember

Summary: Armand plays a prank on Lestat...with some colorful consequences.

I came up with the idea while waiting on breakfast this morning, so I hope it doesn't feel rushed. Posted below for those not on AO3

“Marius!” The cry rings through the chateau. “Marius, save me!”

Marius looks up from his reading, sharing a concerned look with Louis. That is Armand’s voice, and it’s on the move. Marius tenses up; what could be wrong? What could be so horrific that Armand is screaming for him like this? He rises, strides to the opposite side of the room and throws the door open. No sooner does he stick his head out in the corridor then Armand is diving behind him and crouching behind the couch.

“He’s going to kill me,” Armand pants. “He’s going to kill me. Don’t let him hurt me, Master. Please.”

“Calm down, Amadeo,” Marius sooths. “No one is going to hurt you.” He glances at Louis again. “Won’t you tell us what happened?”

Before Armand can begin, a second roar cuts through the stones, nearly rattling the shutters. “Where is he? I’m going to murder him! Where is that little devil?”

Armand ducks behind the couch again, reaching around to hold onto the hem of Marius’ cloak. "Oh no, he's found me."

"Amadeo," Marius repeats. “Amadeo, you must tell us what is the matter so we can help.”

The door bangs open, hitting the wall so hard it nearly breaks off its hinges. Louis and Marius turn at the same time, gasp at the same time, and suddenly find themselves at a loss for words. This wasn’t what they expected given the nature of Armand’s pleading. Surely they’re not seeing what they’re seeing; neither Louis nor Marius realized it was even possible.

“Lestat,” Louis says gently. “Your hair….”

Lestat glares at him incredulously. ��What an astute observation you’ve made, Louis,” he spits. “Care to share with the rest of the class?”

Louis’ eyes shift from Lestat over to Armand and Marius. Armand has come out from behind the couch, though he still keeps Marius between him and the Prince, clutching his robes tightly, brown eyes barely visible through auburn curls.

Louis sputters, unsure how to broach the subject. Lestat’s eyes smolder waiting for an answer. “It’s…It’s….”

“It’s what, dear Louis?”

Louis fails to hide his snickering. He has to turn away from the Prince before he laughs outright. “It’s green.”

“Yes,” Lestat sneers. “It’s green. The most horrible shade of green imaginable!” The anger vanishes and he begins to cry. “I look like I spent a fortune just to have my highlights ruined by someone who has no clue what they’re doing.” He points behind Marius. “And there is the culprit! He did this to me!"

“Prove it,” Armand says from behind his maker. The fear is gone and now he’s ready to meet Lestat’s challenge; so long as Marius stays between them, that is.

Lestat crosses his arms. “Show them your hands.”

What little color Armand’s face holds vanishes and his already large brown eyes grow wider. He whimpers and cowers behind Marius once more.

“Oh no,” Lestat says angrily. “Don’t pretend you’re innocent; whimpering like a little girl.” He scoffs. “Are you a man or are you a mouse?”

“Neither,” Armand snarks. “I’m a vampire.”

“Amadeo.” Marius’ voice is firm; the same voice he used centuries ago to keep control of his palazzo. “Come now; this can be cleared up easily if you do as he says.” Marius turns, pulling his robe out of Armand’s grip. He puts his hands on Armand’s shoulders. “Let’s see.”

Armand looks up at him the same way a child would look if he’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He moves his hands slowly behind his back and swallows. Marius’ eyebrow arches in suspicion.

Armand is no match for this gaze. “But, Master—” He begins.

“We don’t have all night,” Lestat spits. “Show your guilt and be done with it.”

“Lestat,” Marius warns. He turns back to Armand and holds his own hands out. “Let’s see.”

Armand sighs defeated, and places both his hands, palms down, in those of his maker. Marius grips them gently and turns them over. He says nothing. He doesn’t have to; his eyes convey the message perfectly.

“Ah ha!” Lestat shouts. “There! You see? He’s been caught red-handed!” He coughs. “Or green; green-handed.”

“Enough, Lestat,” Marius says over the younger vampire’s cackling. Again his eyes ask the silent question. Why? Armand only shrugs. Marius turns away. “Louis, would you be so kind as to help the Prince regain his appropriate hair color? I’m sure together you’ll think of something.”

“Of course,” Louis agrees, stepping forward. “Come on, Lestat,” he says gently. “Let’s see what we can figure out.”

“I’m hideous, aren’t I?” Lestat asks sadly.

“No,” Louis answers. “No, not hideous.” He grins. “Though you’re right; that is a putrid shade of green.”

Armand laughs at this. He can’t control it, but quickly clamps his hands over his mouth and squints his eyes shut. When he opens them again, Louis is holding Lestat back and Marius is looking down at him in disbelief.

“You’re grounded,” his Master sighs, throwing his hands up.

My usual starbucks order is a vanilla oat milk latte and I will not be shamed for it!!! But I'm kinda digging the Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew these days. I just....like....vanilla and coffee...... in a few weeks my go-to order will be a pumpkin spice latte like I'm that girl.....

i keep my hair long because i dance hula & tahitian! dance is truly my first love. besides dancing, i’m a self-proclaimed gym rat & i love lifting heavy.. my favorite day is leg + glute day 🫣 i also love to crochet, knit and bake! i also have a really bad shopping addiction lol. aaaandddd i have a mini dachshund named oscar who has my entire heart <3

i’m generally really shy & awkward when you first meet me, but you’ll def know when i’m comfortable w you when i literally never stop talking/cracking jokes. i like going to get silly (alcoholic) drinks with my friends and all around just hanging out. i like to think i glow the brightest during the spring & summer time bc i gravitate towards my bed during winter (i love the warm sun!!). i’m always open to listening to new music & i think i definitely broadened my horizons in the past 5 years.
