Sioux cradleboards, c. 1700s.
Region: Northern Great Plains.
Cradleboards or papooses provided security for babies, who would be wrapped in a blanket and bound to the board. Whilst giving the mother some freedom when carrying the child (they could be strapped to the back), the cradleboard could be safely propped up against a surface while she carried out her tasks. Widely used in North America and further afield, the shapes of the cradleboards vary according to the traditions of the tribes, and these cradleboards or papooses are typical styles favoured by the Sioux people. Their purpose is unclear, but other tribes used extensions similar to those on the cradleboard on the right. However, while different tribes usually made these extensions curved, only the Sioux used the straight extension pieces as seen here. Women would fashion these cradleboards as gifts to other women of the tribe. Quillwork was a commonly used form of decoration, carried out only by women using porcupine quills. These were softened by soaking in water before being dyed and then stitched on to leather in distinctive geometric designs.
