The Sound That Arrives As Light: Manifestations of the Harp
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silver lyre from Ur (Mesopotamia), Sumerian harp from the tomb of Queen Puabi, both from around 2600BC // seen yesterday at the British Museum
Here is a mix of music that prominently features the harp—that most ancient instrument which appeared around the world in variegated forms beginning (as far as we know) around 5,000 years ago, when both written language and civilization appeared on the scene. Did harps evolve from the hunter’s bow? Unlike bone flutes, harps are usually made of wood, so an earlier harp would have not appeared in the archeological record and would’ve been lost to oblivion.
Harp and poetry are primordial bedfellows (lyric->lyre). I hope to eventually reunite the two à la Sappho, who performed her poetry with a lyre, like so many of the ancients!
Mix Notes:
This mix features a variety of harp music: classical harp, Burmese harp (saung), west African harp (kora), Paraguayan harp, New Age harp, Celtic folk harp, indie harp, experimental harp, ambient harp, and jazz harp. The mix starts off slowly with Mary Lattimore, contemporary master of the loop method of composition. Next we have the most famous movement from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, the Adagietto, for solo harp and strings—one of the most memorable appearances of the harp in classical music.
The upbeat portion of the mix begins with Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal on kora and cello, followed by a short dance suite composed by harp maestro Carlos Salzedo, the father of the harp technique I’m currently studying. The energy of the mix peaks with “Pajaro Campana,” performed by José Véliz. This is the absolute best recording of this song I could find—the high pitched glissandi sound like aliens!! Yes it’s the actual timbre of the Paraguayan harp (played with the nails!), which was introduced by the Spanish colonialists but evolved its own indigenous tradition.
Next we have the Malian kora maestro Toumani Diabaté with the gorgeous and uplifting “Konkoba.” What I love about kora music is the way it’s both melodic and percussive—you can groove to it. The mix starts to slow down with the a track consisting of saung (Burmese harp) and mournful vocals. I don’t know anything about this multi-volume recording—the song had a whopping 0 views when I looked it up on YouTube.
We get another beautiful song of harp and voice with a track from Harold Budd’s The Pavilion of Dreams. The recently rediscovered Carol Kleyn brings the Celtic folk harp, followed by two indie harp tracks from Emilie Kahn and CocoRosie + Devendra Banhart. Georgia Kelly lulls us into oceanic consciousness with “Seapeace” (featuring harp and violin). We continue with more harp and strings (cello) with Fauré’s “Pavane,” a piece I hope to learn in a couple months.
Up next are two jazz harp masters, Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. Alice began learning the harp at the same age as me (30), soon after John Coltrane died. Taking up the instrument was a form of bereavement—John had ordered the harp before he died, but the assembly was only completed after he had passed away. The instrument sat unplayed by a window, and the wind blowing in through the window would produce a celestial sound when it passed through the strings of the harp, which inspired Alice to teach herself the instrument.
We begin our descent with a dark track from Aine O’dwyer and an oneiric composition by John Cage, followed by a live Björk track from her collaboration with harp experimentalist Zeena Parkins. Next we have another collaboration between experimentalist Anne LaBaron (on a “prepared” harp), Kiku Day (on shakuhachi), and Kanoko Nishi (on koto). We conclude the mix with Czech composer Smetana’s epic tone poem “Vltava” (Die Moldau)—not originally composed for harp, but a staple of the harp repertoire nonetheless.
A note on the difference between the Spotify and YouTube versions of the mix:
Glaringly absent from the Spotify version is Joanna Newsom because she’s not on Spotify (she called Spotify a “a villainous cabal of major labels”). Since the Carol Kleyn track isn’t on YouTube I added Newsom to the YouTube version of the mix. The tracks “Pavane” and “Underlight” are also missing from the YouTube version. The recording of “Pajaro Campana” on the YouTube version of the mix is not nearly as good as the one on the the Spotify version because my preferred recording is not on YouTube :( But on the plus side, you get more live video action on the YouTube version.
Enjoy!!!!

Miss Bolivia Universe is stripped of her title after revealing she has fallen pregnant Miss Bolivia Universe has been stripped of her title for a 'breach of contract' after she revealed she was pregnant. The beauty queen, Joyce Prado, 22, who won Miss Bolivia Universe last year, was dethroned after it emerged she was two months pregnant. After a month of speculated rumours, she confirmed that she and her partner Rodrigo Giménez, a Paraguayan model would be having a baby and getting married soon. Joyce who became Miss Bolivia last year and won Miss Tourism Bolivia in 2015 told local media: 'Yes, we are going to have a baby, we have the support of our families, we are both happy, I love Rodrigo and this news has brought us closer together. 'We do not have a wedding date, but hopefully, it will be soon, we will take it easy we have the support of our families.' Promotions Gloria, the modelling agency which has produced Miss Bolivia since 1985, is known for mixing beauty with politics. It said in a statement: 'The reasons [for Prado being stripped of her title] are strictly related to the breach of contract, leaving on record that we maintain cordial relations in a field of mutual understanding, safeguarding the confidentiality clause.' Unbothered by the news, Prado posted a photo of herself and her partner holding a top she had bought for her son. She wrote: 'The miracle of life is indescribable, especially when it comes to the arrival of a new member of the family. 'Becoming a father or mother may be the most important challenge that comes our way in life, but just as it can be difficult, it can also be the most rewarding thing in the world. 'I want to share with you that I am the happiest woman in the world because my life is full of love, because together with the man of my dreams we are beginning to live the most beautiful stage of our lives. — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2KVnyaf

Happy (late) Valentine's Day, amor!
Submitted by @nielybh
A hellish week had finally, finally gone by, and in that hateful Friday night all Martín wanted was to get home, pass out on the nearest soft surface and not give a single care about the world anymore. He locked up the door after fumbling a little with the keys, then dragged his feet to the couch and simply dropped down on it face first, limbs sprawling awkwardly around him. He then grumbled a delayed “I’m home” and, as if on cue, Daniel came over from the kitchen. The paraguayan couldn’t hold back a small laugh upon seeing such an image in the living room. “Hard week, huh.” he said, laughter still on his voice as he kneeled down beside the couch. His only answer was a long suffering sigh. Dani laughed again. “Come on Tintin, you can’t have dinner if you die on me like this. I put extra love in it today, so don’t you dare let it go to waste.” the brunette said with no real bite to it as he combed back blond locks away from his cousin’s face with his fingers, dragging them up and digging a little in his scalpel, a small massage of both encouragement and sympathy. Despite a small groan of approval, the Argentinian refused to move an inch. “I really can’t move Dani. Call the doctors so they can formally declare my death. Put me in a coffin and tell Sebastián he can’t have my old CDs collection not even over my dead body.”
“Such a drama queen you are, but that won’t work on me when I made you special food. You have no right to decline it since you need to eat better than those sandwiches you gobble up in 5 minutes during work break, so come on now.” Dani pulled his hand back from Martín’s hair and tugged on his sleeve. Another long grunt later, Martín was up again. He slowly walked over to kitchen and sat down. Dani had also gone through the trouble of setting it nicely, and Martín was infinitely grateful for those small cares Daniel always took whenever he had to slave himself off in the office during the busiest weeks. After serving two plates of incredibly good-smelling food, Dani also sat down across the table to enjoy the meal, but he fidgeted a little with his silvery and that was usually a sign some big news were coming next.
“You know… I was thinking…” “It’s not healthy to think too hard at this time, you know.” The comment earned Martín a swat on the arm, but he only smiled and focused his attention on cutting himself a piece of beef. “Anyway, what were you thinking about?” “Ma insisted I had to go visit her this weekend and bring you along because she’s been worried. Will you come with me?” Dani watched as Martín’s smile grew. “You know I can’t refuse any invitation from her unless I want her to call me every 10 minutes along the entire week after. So are you really inviting me or just communicating me that we’re going there anyway?”
“Well, you kind of answered it yourself.” Dani finally turned his attention to his plate afterwards, but it only took a couple of chews before Tincho’s voice called him back. “You might want to bring a metal concert home tomorrow because I doubt I’ll ever open my eyes again once I lie on that bed.” “You say that as if I’d find it a terrible idea.” Dani answered sarcastically.
“Fiiine, but I can’t promise not to kick you off the bed permanently if you actually do it.” Dani made a face as if balancing the pros and cons of the idea after all but settled for finishing his dinner without pushing the subject further. ———————————————
Indeed, it was a real penitence to get Martín out of bed the morning after but he got up after a little coaxing and they were able to travel without much delay to Keraná’s house in the countryside. The matriarch of the Guaraníes already awaited for them with all their lunches ready. Keraná cooed repeatedly over “her children”, as she called them, upon their arrival, and they exchanged words during the whole meal, pausing so often to update Keraná on the most recent events of their lives that their plates nearly grew cold. After being released from the “clutches” of the super loving mother, they gathered their bags and carried them to the bedroom. As they were unpacking their most important items, Daniel turned towards Tincho. “Hey, let’s go somewhere.” Martín lifted a confused gaze towards his cousin. “Where do you mean, specifically?” “Somewhere special. Don’t ask too much, let’s go or not?” “… Fine, if you insist. Hope you don’t have anything weird in mind.” Dani smiled brightly. “Come on, don’t you trust me?” “… Is this a rethorical question or do you really want the answer?” The punch that hit his arm was stronger than the day before.
  ———————————————
As it turns out, they didn’t go that far: only a few steps until they reached the old music salon. Daniel pulled a chair from a corner and turned it back towards the door. “Sit here, please. And don’t look back.” Martín raised an eyebrow in slight confusion. What were they doing there among Dani’s instruments, each one of them dripping with too many memories, and what was Daniel up to? Despite the confusion, Martín sat down and did as told, facing the door directly. He could hear some shuffling, and it was very tempting to just take a quick glance over his shoulder and see what was going on there but he knew better than to betray Dani’s trust on this. One thing he had to admit, Dani’s surprises to him were very rarely of the bad kind, so he could relax a little, letting himself just… Trust him. Soon enough, it was as if angels had descended into that room. Martín’s eyes went wide as a most beautiful melody seemed to invade him, entering through his ears and reaching directly for his heart. It was slow and so very soulful… Nothing like he had ever heard before and it took him a few seconds to realize it: this music wouldn’t come from angels who came down from the very Heavens to deliver our Lord’s Words as he was taught as a child by Antonio and even more fervently by Lovino later. This song that seemed to speak directly to his core was being produced by his only living companion in that room: Daniel. Daniel was actually playing to him his beloved harp, something he’s kept most private throughout the years.
His hands would curl up on his lap, grasping at the fabric of his pants, a grounding reminder not to let his own mind wander so far into the song he’d forget where he was. But despite the best effort to keep a grip on his consciousness, Martín had closed his eyes at some point of that overwhelming experience and his whole body relaxed as the music kept going. Even as a great admirer of the beautiful lyrics of his favourite songs, he had to recognize this music, even lacking them, spoke louder than they could ever do. The rhythm slowed gradually to a halt. It was over and their surroundings were once again material in the silence that followed. Somehow, without being on the verge of death, Martín had the impression his soul had returned to his flesh and he was alive and functional again, but a longing feeling remained deep inside, as if he missed something he couldn’t quite put a finger on. He opened his eyes and turned to look over his shoulder, no longer afraid if Dani’s reprimands, but the scene he saw brought a rush of blood to his cheeks.
Daniel was hugged to the harp, eyes closed and a smile Martín knew quite well. His chest rising and falling noticeably. He didn’t even notice the words coming out of his mouth until they were out and hanging in the air. “Want me to leave you alone with your lover?” It broke the spell that had been floating above their heads until then. Dani’s eyes opened and glared straight into his cousin’s before rolling back a little. Luckily for Martín, he had grown immune to this kind of commentary after hearing them from his own mother oh too often. “Don’t be ungrateful now. I wanted to do something nice for you, you had been away for too long and, as always, overworking yourself to exhaustion. I don’t like seeing you like that so I thought maybe… I’d share something that always relaxes me with you. Sorry if I’m—.” His words were cut by a pair of lips against his and a pair of hands keeping his face up. Once again, lyrics were unnecessary, and the melody of love spoke clearer for them than any kind of words.

Ray Wilkins: From Mexico to Milan, football says goodbye to 'an absolute gentleman'
Media playback is not supported on this device
Ray Wilkins, who has died aged 61,[1] was one of the most enduring and popular figures of the modern footballing generation.
Wilkins had a successful and nomadic playing career, captaining England on 10 occasions while winning 84 caps and representing clubs of the stature of Chelsea, Manchester United, AC Milan, Paris St-Germain and Rangers with distinction.
He always maintained his closest links with boyhood club Chelsea, serving as a trusted and loyal lieutenant to several managers during the latter years of glory at Stamford Bridge.
From teenage prodigy to Old Trafford
Wilkins’ career was characterised by maturity and dignity, which was recognised early in his time at Chelsea, where he made his debut as a 17-year-old in October 1973 before being awarded the captaincy at just 18 by then manager Eddie McCreadie.
He went on to make his England debut in the Bicentennial Tournament against Italy in New York City in May 1976 and had a burgeoning reputation as one of the young pin-up boys of English football as well as one of its most promising talents.
<!–
Wilkins – who picked up nickname ‘Butch’ in his early career – led a group of emerging Chelsea youngsters back into the top flight, but once they were relegated again it became inevitable that top-flight clubs would pounce. So it proved as he signed for Manchester United for a fee reported in some quarters to be £777,777 but rounded up to £800,000 in others in August 1979.
He acquired an unfair reputation for a conservative playing style, with one cruel nickname of ‘The Crab’ mocking his supposed preference for sideways passes.
Those who actually played with Wilkins thought differently and spoke of an elegant, visionary midfield player and leader whose abilities were underrated, as evidenced by the calibre of clubs who were always keen to secure his services.
Manchester United, up against the great Liverpool side of the late 70s and early 80s, were unable to bring the title back to Old Trafford but Wilkins enjoyed his finest personal moment at the club with the 1983 FA Cup win against Brighton and Hove Albion at Wembley.
And he is best remembered for a brilliant goal in the original 2-2 draw at Wembley, turning inside before curling a magnificent left-foot finish beyond the diving Brighton keeper Graham Moseley.
Wilkins continued to be a regular member of United’s midfield alongside England team-mate Bryan Robson before moving to AC Milan in the summer of 1984.
The football nomad
The move to Serie A with AC Milan began a period when Wilkins was constantly on the move and he is still remembered with great respect and affection by those he represented.
He was at the San Siro during a transitional spell for the great Italian club, scoring three goals in 105 appearances, but is still recalled on the club website as “a serious and meticulous professional” known for his “exemplary correctness”.
Wilkins then had a short spell at Paris St-Germain before being signed for Rangers by then manager Graeme Souness, many times a midfield adversary during the Scot’s time at Liverpool.
<!–
He flourished in Scotland alongside England colleagues such as Terry Butcher and Gary Stevens, becoming a hugely popular figure with the Ibrox support. He won the Scottish title and League Cup, scoring a spectacular volley in a memorable 5-1 Old Firm win at home to Celtic.
Wilkins returned to England for a four-year spell at Queen’s Park Rangers. He had a one-game stay at Crystal Palace, his time there curtailed by a foot injury, before returning to Loftus Road as player-manager, taking over from Gerry Francis in November 1994.
He enjoyed a measure of early success but left in September 1996 after the club were relegated, his cause not helped by the sale of leading scorer Les Ferdinand to Newcastle United in the 1995 close season.
Wilkins finished off his playing career with short spells at Wycombe Wanderers, Hibernian, Millwall and Leyton Orient.
An England mainstay
Wilkins was trusted by a succession of England managers such as Ron Greenwood and Bobby Robson to be the foundation of their sides – but his international career was often characterised by frustration.
He played in the European Championships in Italy in 1980, scoring a brilliant lob in the opening 1-1 draw with Belgium, but England failed to progress from the group, their prospects damaged by a 1-0 loss to the hosts.
Media playback is not supported on this device
He played in every game in the 1982 World Cup in Spain but in a tournament that had two group stages, England failed to progress from the second phase after goalless draws against West Germany and Spain.
Greenwood’s side were unbeaten but returned home frustrated after a campaign undermined by injury to two key players, Kevin Keegan and Trevor Brooking.
The greatest pain was arguably still to come for Wilkins at the World Cup in Mexico four years later.
Wilkins played in the opening loss to Portugal and was then sent off following an uncharacteristic show of temper in the goalless draw against Morocco in Monterrey.
He was shown a red card for hurling the ball in the direction of Paraguayan referee Gabriel Gonzalez.
Wilkins never regained his place after a two-match suspension as England went out to Argentina in the quarter-final and his last international appearance came just a few months later – a 2-0 victory over Yugoslavia in a European Championship qualifier at Wembley in November 1986.
The trusted lieutenant
Wilkins returned to management at Fulham in 1997, with former England colleague Keegan as “chief operating officer” at Craven Cottage under the new big-spending regime of Mohamed Al-Fayed.
He took Fulham into the Second Division play-offs but was sacked before the first play-off game took place, with Keegan taking control.
The rest of his career was mainly as a loyal backroom team member and assistant manager, first with Gianluca Vialli at Chelsea and Watford and then with Dennis Wise at Millwall.
<!–
Wilkins returned to Chelsea in September 2008 as assistant to Brazil World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari and, after Scolari was sacked, stayed on as right-hand man to interim manager Guus Hiddink as the Blues picked up the FA Cup in 2009.
He was also at Carlo Ancelotti’s side for the Premier League and FA Cup double in 2010 before it was announced in November 2010 that his contract would not be renewed, bringing an unexpected end to his Chelsea career.
In his book ‘The Beautiful Games Of An Ordinary Genius’, Ancelotti wrote: “Ray is one of those select few, always present, noble in spirit, a real blue blood. Chelsea flows in his veins… without him we wouldn’t have won a thing.”
He then had short spells back at Fulham and in charge of the Jordan national team before he was sacked alongside manager Tim Sherwood at Aston Villa.
Fighting demons and illness – and a popular pundit
Wilkins had darker moments in his latter years, but remained a respected figure on the media circuit and at matches as he pursued a career in punditry on radio and television.
<!–
He suffered poor health, including ulcerative colitis. He also had double bypass heart surgery in July 2017.
Wilkins went through a five-week rehabilitation programme in the Priory Hospital in Woking after he was banned from driving for four years for drink-driving in 2016, admitting he had struggled with alcohol problems.
After he suffered his cardiac arrest, former Chelsea and England player Frank Lampard called Wilkins “an absolute gentleman” while heartfelt goodwill messages flooded in from around the world from former clubs and those who had played and worked with him.
He was back on radio and was a regular at games this this season, where his warm, outgoing personality continued to make him a popular figure among the media and his former playing colleagues.
Wilkins leaves his wife, Jackie, and children Ross and Jade.

— view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2UXKo4L
