Before You Go | Future Donnie & April Insight (Part VI)
Tumblr media
(Reader Included)
A/N: Any constructive criticism is appreciated. Reader comments and feedback are also welcomed a lot.
I have been gone for a long time. Just occupied with my studies! No fan fiction author curse or anything (yet).
Summary: You’re both adopting-parents of Casey. The story follows the perspective of Donatello and April O’Neil during the Kraang apocalypse. You and Leonardo decided to ask them to watch over thirteen-year-old Casey.
In other words, familial interactions between April, Donnie, and Casey Jr.
Reader: Gender-neutral pronouns are used, except the terms “(Mom / Dad)” are also used. Second POV.
Pairing: Rise! Future! Leonardo X Reader
Warnings: Bittersweet.
Word Count:  ~3490
Parts: One / Two / Three / Four / Five / Six / ...
~
Donnie knew how much of a genius he was.
It was no surprise after all. In his late teens, he improved NASA’s satellites to communicate with planets light centuries away. He cured breast cancer through the use of protons in radiation therapy to target specific cells, rather than affecting the harmless. Hell, he even managed to discover a new type of radioactive particles: mutons. By that point, he—.
“—should have been given a Nobel Prize in Medicine and in Chemistry.” Donnie cursed under his breath. He strolled over to his lab bench, equipping his goggles.
Squeeeak.
April– who was found seated on Donnie’s roughed-up, spinning gaming chair– raised an eyebrow. Her hair had grown out and was left unbounded. Faint wrinkles and eye bags on her features displayed maturity, in contrast to a couple of years ago. However, everyone was well aware that time was not the only factor.
“Whatcha going on about now, Donnie?”
The softshell huffed. “Recall when I wrote a report about my experimental findings with an invention meant to revive a deceased human being?”
“...You mean the one where you thought it was a good idea to open up Curie’s tomb? Even gone as far as to ask for my help?” April grimaced. “Who’d ever forget that.”
She proceeded to massage her temples.
“God. You were in all kinds of messed up for that, Don.”
Lightning-like yellow sparks flickered as Donnie had his robotic hands occupied with a butane torch. His goggles were sealed tight around his eyes as he built a oval-looking device on his lab bench. Titanium outer-layer over a seriously complex circuit-board; appearing as if Samsung marketed grenades.
He scoffed. “Oh please. It wasn’t as if I’d taken long to understand how Marie Curie deserves her rest for her great contributions to radiation. Thus is why–.”
“–You decided to take a poor random husband of an old wife,” April interjected.
“Ahem.” Donnie pronounced. “The poor woman was begging me for her husband to be alive again. I was simply gracious and generous enough to not charge her for the process.” He set aside the butane torch. “At least it progressed well; he stayed alive for an additional two years. It gave his wife psychological comfort, and I was able to submit my paper to the N.S.F..”
He picked up a screwdriver. “Except....”
April could tell her friend’s eye was twitching.
“They rejected my findings, nearly had me detained, and claimed it was far too ‘unethical.’” Donnie raised his volume. “Scoff! As if those researchers weren’t committing the crime themselves! Taking bodies away from families and claiming them as scientific property without permission.
If I could go back in time and shove my documents in their jaws, you bet I would.”
April smirked. “Well, I have my regrets too, Donnie.”
“You sound rather amused, April. Is that so surprising? And here I never thought you would regret your part-time job at Albearto’s. Or the fact you wasted money to switch to journalism in university.”
WHACK!
April threw her bat at Donnie’s head, flying back to her hand like a boomerang.
“Watch your mouth, mister. I may have regretted Albearto’s, but not a single moment in my life did I ever regret my journalism passion.” She stood up.
“Ouch.” The softshell vocalized, squinting his eyes toward her. His robotic clampers paused, setting aside the torch and taking off his goggles.
“Mind yourself, April. Horse-playing is forbidden in the laboratory. I am not consenting to having yet another silver-titanium apparatus get scratched because of you.” Donnie gritted his teeth. “Can you hear the negative connotation?”
“Seriously, Donnie? Where’d that come from? Not only was that years ago but it ain’t anything except a simple accident.”
“‘Simple accident?’” the softshell repeated with dramatic offense. “An accident, like many others in science labs, which could have caused severe damage! Remember the incident when your teacher dumped bleach and vinegar into the trash bin?
You know, if you had paid any attention in your chemistry class, those two would make mustard gas?” Donnie side-eyed his friend. “Simple accidents can have serious consequences, O’Neil.”
A hand crept up the lab bench.
“Uh-huh, and I’m supposed to believe an instance of me knocking over your phone and books would kill somebody?” April crossed her arms. “If anything, the blame’s yours for not organizing your desk when you got drunk on coffee.”
The hand took ahold of the butane torch.
“Donatello? Disorganized? Sounds cheap coming from you, a student majoring in Journalism.”
April pulled up her coat’s sleeves. “Oh boy, you’re about to get it—.”
Squeeeak!
Heads spun and found a 13-year old boy, replacing April’s spot on Donnie’s chair. Casey eyed the torch with a great yet concerning amount of curiosity.
“Yo, what’s this for, Uncle Don?”
At lightning speed, while April ran to move the gaming chair away further from the workbench, Donnie snatched the tool from his hands. “Child. Casey. Young man.” The softshell heaved loudly. “I must inform you this is NOT meant to be handled with such casual ease. How in Hawking did you even—.”
“Don’t your lab have a passcode or something?”
“–Is what I am wondering myself, O’Neil. I refuse to believe this child remembers the beginning thirty numbers of π–.”
“Nope, only us.” April and Donnie lifted their gazes to his lab entrance. You leaned on the frame while a dear red-eared slider stood just behind. A couple of steps inside, and the metallic lab door shut close.
Donnie– strangely– was quick to hide his device-in-progress off to the side.
“You’re back!” April grinned. “Hell, you would not believe the convo Donnie and I were having a minute ago.” She hurried to hug you.
“Figures,” Leo remarked. “We could practically hear you yards off.”
“Sounds like things never get old.” You smiled.
There was a side-eye between Donnie and April, before the Commander proceeded to inquire, coughing: “Anyhow.. care to explain the occasion? You two don’t seem to be in a hurry.”
“The only times you ever visit my laboratory are to prepare for immediate combat engagement, and you look awfully collected.” The softshell furrowed his brows.
“No, no.” You waved your hands, shaking your head. “Thank God no. We came here to ask if you two could take care of our Casey here while we head out.” The other turtle scrunched his in-quote eyebrows. “You— You came here to request us to... babysit him?”
April jabbed him in his plastron.
“You see? Just like I said.” Leo turned to you. “I know my brother, love. Don’s not the kind of guy to take responsibility for a kid. Or anyone, really.”
“Hold on.” Donnie narrowed his eyes. “I never said I refused, Leo.”
“Don’t know, it sounds like it to me.”
“Well, my misinformed brother, contrary to your belief, I am perfectly capable of handling a child.”
You huffed with amusement. Your husband only winked back.
“If you say so, Don.”
“Where are you two heading off for if you needed us to watch over him?” April inquired. “Wondering, ‘cause this never happened even when you two leave for patrol.”
“Just finding some time for ourselves.”
April exclaimed, “As in a honeymoon? Why not just say so? We’ll leave you two alone–.”
“–In this economy and climate?” Donnie interjected. “Has it also not been six years since your yet-to-be-legal marriage?”
“Alright, alright,” Leonardo chuckled. “Cut us some slack, bro. Finding time wasn’t easy when there’s Kraang above our necks.”
“Right, and you’re going on a honeymoon, how?” The softshell crossed his arms. “Simply because you’re the leader does not equate to you making wise decisions, Leo.”
“His ōdachi can teleport anyone to anyplace, we have some hope we can easily teleport to a remote area,” you answered. “One without Kraang infestation. It’ll be hard, but we may as well try.”
“Bonus points if we find clear skies and an ocean.” The red-eared turtle grinned, wrapping his arm over your shoulders.
“What’s a honeymoon, (Mom / Dad)?”
Your hand went to caress Casey’s cheek. “Parent quality time. It just means you get to handle yourself like the responsible grown-up you’ll become one day. Just promise me you’ll be on your best behavior around Uncle Don and Auntie April?”
“I promise, (Mom / Dad)!”
“Good boy,” Leo laughed, ruffling the kid’s hair.
“You didn’t ask Mikey and Raph to help out too, or?”
“Between you and me, I think you guys are better of making sure Casey doesn’t get into any chaos,” you whispered to April. “Don’t tell them that, though.”
She laughed. “Okay, I see how it is. You both have fun.”
Donnie bit his lip. Right as Leonardo and (Name) turn to exit the laboratory, he extended his arm out to them.
“Leo, (Name).”
You two faced back to him once more.
“Don’t kill yourselves out there.”
Everyone’s eyes widened– April, you, and Leonardo himself. But the brother in blue snickered, holding a smile that reached his eyes. “So you do also care for me, Don. And all this time I thought you were plotting to put me in my grave or something.”
“We won’t.” Leo placed a hand on your shoulder. “You got my word.”
“Bye (Mom / Dad)! Bye Papa!”
“We’ll be back soon, Casey!”
Donnie stood in silence as you finally left, leaving himself with none other than his best friend and his nephew. “I refuse to believe this is the future we have to deal with.”
“Times changed all of us, didn’t they?” April spoke. “One day we wish each other a good one, and the next, we hope we just don’t die. I could’ve been a famous news anchor by now, make my mother happy, fight crime without worrying about dying the next second.
..I wonder if there’s anyone else out there besides the small number of us down here.”
“..I doubt it.”
Donnie pulled himself together and walked back to his workbench, operating his clampers to work once again. He put on his goggles. Casey, being a young teenager of enthusiasm, peeked over.
“Watch yourself, boy,” April warned.
“Don’t worry about me, Auntie. I’m only standing over here.” Casey narrowed his eyes upon the glowing and metal-like ball his uncle had his tools on. “What are you working on, Uncle Don?”
“A sphere.”
“A sphere?”
“You heard correctly.”
“That sounds kind of boring.”
Donnie had to hold himself back from remarking with: ‘That is exactly what every child whose intellect is doomed would say.’
“I’m sure your mother would find it rather moving.”
“(Mom / Dad)? I don’t understand what’s emotional about a ball, though.”
“Hey Casey.” April coughed. “Why not tell us about your mask here? Haven’t taken a good look at it before. Maybe Uncle Don would like to hear it too.”
“You actually want me to talk about my mask?”
“Ain’t a problem, is it?”
“No.” He fidgeted with his fingers a bit. “You don’t have anything else to do?”
“We were just told to watch over you, kid.”
“Yeah, but everyone I know is always busy with the Kraang or supplying weapons. I never really get chances to hang out.”
There was a brief pause in the butane torch’s flame.
April’s expression softened. Her hand came up to brush his black hair. “Things have gotten calmer up there. So you’ve got plenty of time with us now.”
Casey smiled.
“So your mask?”
The boy alternated between covering his face and removing it. “(Mom / Dad) gave it to me. She told me it is based on the one worn by my biological mother. (Mom / Dad) also said that my birth mother was kind of crazy-funny and likes to be loud. She would have a stick to play– what was it– hockey?
I don’t know what kind of game hockey is supposed to be, but I guess it’s nice to know how life was like before all the Kraang.”
A sad smile crept on April’s lips.
“Anyways, I thought the mask looked kind of plain, so I decided to draw red marks on it. See?” Casey showed his mask off, fingers tapping the surface. “Guess who it looks like!”
There were two bold and thick streaks of red. Each one ran through one eye, truly a defining characteristic. The Commander chuckled, already imagining how much pride her friend in blue would feel from the fact a kid– let alone one he had been parenting– looked up to him so much.
“You know, I am seeing someone familiar here.” April hummed as she put on a thoughtful facade. Fingers holding her chin and everything. “Got to be Uncle Don.”
Named turtle paused for a moment and raised a brow.
“Seriously, Auntie April?” On the other hand, Casey gave her an incredulous look and shook his head. “You probably want to get your eyes checked out, ‘cause Uncle Don doesn’t have any red stripes.” Off to the side. “And even if he did, he won’t look as cool as Dad.”
April snickered behind her palm as Donnie eyed the boy from behind his goggles.
“You’re right, you’re right. Just messing with you, kid.” Her hand ruffled his hair once more. “Sounds like you really admire your Papa, don’t you?”
“Why wouldn’t I? Dad has an awesome sword that opens up portals. He always moves so quickly whenever he’s fighting. Bam! And the Kraang’s gone!” The teenager stretched his arm for emphasis. “Even as the leader, Papa knows when to get serious and when to make people laugh. He also cares a lot about me, (Mom / Dad), you guys, and everyone!”
It made even Donnie himself smile.
However, the way Casey’s enthusiasm died down had not gone unnoticed. “I’ve always wanted to help out though.” He sighed, shoulders slumping. “I want to fight the Kraang right by his and (Mom / Dad)’s side. Except I barely get the chance to, because they keep telling me to stay close to base and hide behind a giant rock.”
April crossed her arms and went quiet. His feelings were nothing new. In fact, she experienced the same thing herself, seeing she had always been a human. It was like that until–.
“Have no hard feelings,” Donnie spoke up, his hands and eyes remained on his spheric gadget. The sparks were flying. “Your parents are merely worried about your well-being.”
“I know, I know. They won’t have to though, if I can have enough training or something.” Casey sighed. “Then again, I also know I’m only a normal sensitive human.
...Why can’t I be a mutant instead?”
“Ahem. You are classified as a human. That is a true statement and one you cannot change.” Donnie hummed. “However, that does not mean you cannot be strong and capable in other ways.”
“Why does it sound like you’ve been in my place before?”
“Perhaps I did. Did you truly think being a soft-shell turtle is easy? I happened to be born as one of the only Testudines species whose outer shell cannot protect.” Donnie remarked. “Casey, your mask.” His hand signaled.
“What about my mask?”
“I merely want to add something.”
Confused, he hopped off the chair and handed the mask over. “Hmm. As long as you don’t mess with the stripes, Uncle Don.”
“Who says I won’t?”
Casey kicked Donnie’s leg.
“‘Ow,’ I say sarcastically without feeling physical pain.”
“Hmph.” He crossed his arms. “Why do you keep saying things like that?”
“Such as?”
“You say those action verbs, even when you’re already doing them.”
April snorted. “Just his thing, kid. Uncle Don’s got his special quirks.”
“Do you have a quirk?”
“Picking unnecessary fights for one,” Donnie commented.
“You only call them ‘unnecessary,’ because you never want to fix the problem.”
He rolled his eyes. “My solution would’ve been ten times more efficient if you had allowed my technology and I to do the work.”
Casey wondered. “Does your tech ever go haywire, Uncle Don?”
“No.”
“Oh man,” April began, “you should’ve been there for this one time. Your Uncle Don was building some kind of overprotective bed to keep your late Gramps from waking up from his beauty sleep.”
“Gramps likes to sleep?”
“You’d be surprised to hear that he sure does.”
“Then what happened?”
“Uncle Don asked your Dad, Uncle Mikey, and Uncle Raph to try punching, slicing, throwing whatever they could on the bed. They were attacking it like crazy!”
“And then?”
“And the bed was even more insane, ‘cause there were actual missiles shooting out! They went straight for his brothers. At some point, it got overboard, so Uncle Don tried to command it to stop.”
“I’m hearing a ‘but’ coming.”
“But it malfunctioned and thought Uncle Don was the enemy!”
“However!” Donnie pointed his finger up, interrupting the story-telling. “It did not take long for my creation to recognize his master.”
“Still went haywire in my book,” April remarked.
“Ignoring that.” His robotic hand tapped the edge of his workbench, grabbing Casey’s attention. “Come here, young man.” He slid back the mask, except in his hands, it felt as if the frame had thicken.
“It looks the same, but it doesn’t feel the same?”
“Try wearing it over your face.”
The boy did as told. All of a sudden, a bunch of green rectangles and words appeared in his vision. He gasped in awe. He spun around slowly, watching the rectangle focus on a figure through the wall.
“Yes yes, I know. I am well aware of how amazing I am.” Donnie huffed in pride. “I have opted to construct an interface with your mask. I cannot see why you shouldn’t have something to defend yourself with,” he reasoned. “I have other updates in mind later on. As of now, however, your mask will help you detect life forms across other rooms or through other objects.”
“That’s so cool!” The boy hesitated though. “But I don’t want to break it or anything.”
“Hey.” April rested her hand on Casey’s shoulder, giving a firm squeeze. “Our resources are already scarce. Using then losing them is better than nothing. You better make the most of our tech. Understood, soldier?”
Casey grinned underneath his mask. He fixed his posture up and saluted. “Gotcha–! Understood, Commander!”
He faced the inventor, whose hands were already back to being occupied with the “sphere.” “Thanks so much, Uncle Don!” Casey exclaimed, leaping towards the turtle to give a tight hug. “You’re the best!”
Upon contact, Donnie stiffened up, but his lack of experience with physical touch did not prevent a smile forming on his face. He extended a robotic arm, patting Casey’s back.
The boy then scanned around curiously with his mask. “Hey! Think I spot Uncle Mikey and Uncle Raph two floors down! They’re holding hands over a table or something. Why are so many people circling around them?”
April rolled her eyes. “Sounds like another arm-wrestling match between the our youngest and oldest brother.”
Just like that, Casey booked it out of the laboratory so quickly, it reminded her of a certain red-eared slider. “What the–! Casey!” April groaned. “And here I thought we don’t have to deal with runaway kids. I better catch up to him.”
“Would not worry about him too much,” Donnie commented.
“What do you mean by that?”
“Considering we will not always be alive to protect him... the sooner we leave him to himself, the easier it will be for him to survive alone.”
“Hey. Come on now.” April walked to her best friend’s side. “Don’t you say things like that. We’re all going to survive this together–.”
“April.” Slight pain wavered in his voice. “You know as well as I do how our current reality is. It is only a matter of time before the Kraang finds everyone.”
“Yet you’re still here trying.”
No response.
“It’s all because of the kid, isn’t it?” April affirmed. “He ain’t any genius prodigy you were expecting long ago. But he gave you a reason to try– he became someone worth fighting for.”
“I would not put it as simply as that.”
She shrugged. “That’s how I’d say it. You know you’re not the only one whose life changed because of Casey.”
Donnie paused his work, turning off the butane torch and finally pulling his goggles off his eyes again. “...Casey reminds me of when we were young, being rash and immature teenagers like any other. I hate admitting to such thing, but I was one too. And I hate admitting much more how much I missed those times.
The child has known nothing of the trouble we’ve experienced outside, April: when Cassandra was killed, when Draxum was torn apart, when Dad decided to sacrifice himself despite the slim odds.” His hands clenched into fists.
“Do not expect me to have any false hope for our future, but do not assume I would want Casey to feel the same way. For as long as he can, I want him to hold onto that false hope.”
“...” April had her arms crossed. Her eyes slowly came to linger on the workbench. “Is that ‘sphere’ his false hope?”
“..No. Not his.” Donnie traced his thumb over his contraption. “It’s for (Name).”

The Black Market
Space is big. I mean... really big. Like even bigger than a really big rock.
And boring.
But sometimes you get an encounter...
Boring is the worst part.
You can go into space and there's all sorts of cool stuff like the microgravity, the amazing view... and after a while it's just dark and the computer goes 'Boop' every quarter time unit, and this amazing experience collapses into the same space as e.g., being in a nursing home until someone tells you that you've arrived, and you can go look at cool stuff again.
Hence Interstellar Cruise Liners.
Space travel is still not cheap - even a run up and down a space elevator needs paying for, so you want to take as much cargo and paying passengers as possible.
With automated shipyards, you can just pour money and resources into building a truly huge passenger module, stack it on top of some cargo modules and clamp on as many drive units and crew modules as you need.
Load everyone in, let them ooh and ahhh at the view for a day then spin up a gateway and fire the whole thing into superluminal space and drop it out around any world you have a beacon for.
The really great thing is even if you lose the beacon in transit, you are a beacon. Just drop out and wait. Anything goes wrong, the home office can send a rescue ship after you.
In the meantime, there's the ship's amenities: The lush mossy jungle deck, the galactic beach, the games rooms, the dining groves, the on-board university - Even the theatre for live and recorded entertainment.
Still passengers like to have an experience, and so the Sunward Sail out of Ggxcha with seven hundred passengers dropped out of Superluminal space, the bow wave of exotic particles heating the backstop up to a glowing red.
The Sunward Sail dropped into a lazy orbit around an ancient planet, orbited by a big station trailing glittering wreckage - Obviously something dramatic had gone down here.
The lights were on though - So not a derelict station - and the docking was smooth, so the first set of tourists stepped onto the station, onto the Market deck.
So much to see! So much to do!
Madam Shi-shi's bakery run by a happy Tsin selling classic Tsin pastries, and exotic purple rolls with various filling and other goods.
The Top n' Charmed Quarks Bar with the scarred Atrix obviously a veteran of some war or calamity, serving exotic and colourful drinks:
"Dare you try the Human Menu?" she suggests, pulling it out. "Watch out, the Temple of Shir-li is banned in twelve systems..."
They even have a chance wheel!
Then there's Honest Gar's Genuine Human Antiquities, the wares spilling out from the shop in a riot of colours and patinas, where one can buy a genuine antique reproduction Victorian Empire TV, or a genuine Human Made Brown's Kitchen Imp that can tell you how to make a thousand and five human style recipes with a little sheet glass projection hologram of a human in glasses and red horns. So quaint!
And if you get to the end of the market, or one of the traders tips you off, you can find...
The Black Market
There's someone there, a weathered old... unless they were young... spacer, in a patched and scuffed EVA undersuit with 43 on the chest, who'll spin you unbelievable tales for a couple of creds dropped into the old cracked space helmet he keeps on the table next to him and if you ask, he'll let you in -
The back rooms are dark, rowdy, and full of the coolest stuff. There are lots of humans here, and there's an Atrix little guy, with a set of goggles, riding low on the belly of this Atrix Mech.
If you're lucky you can see one of the humans with some grudge square off agianst the little guy. He's surrounded by switches and levers, with a little pair of waldos.
The mech lurches to life, an angry display on its faceplace, growling in a rattling synthetic voice:
Combat mode! Engaged! Polaron Claws. Charging.
It's claws glowing white hot as it swings into motion, and the Human pulls a little cobbled together blaster out and takes a pot shot. The Mech lurches and sparks, warning lights flashing ominously...
Reactor. Overheat. Reactor. Overheat. Emergency. Venting.
The stricken mecha whirls, the little guy screaming in rage and flipping clunky archaic controls... And then when everything seems to be about to go wrong, the mech begins to spray clouds of vapour from it's vents and the alerts wind down, while the scurrilous human takes the opportunity to flee.
It's very dramatic.
And after that you can buy a souvenir arm patch of Cat Fantastic's Mecha with glow in the dark Polaron claws, before it's time to head back - Don't forget to pick up a packed lunch from Madame Shi-Shi's!
--
"Ugh." said Dave, "I don't mind the tourist run but it ruins my appetite" she muttered.
"You shouldn't snack on your own stock." says Big Ma, touching up Gondy's makeup.
Phalanges, helmet off, chin up and enjoying the cool air blower form the converted life support rig that they'd modded into the mecha grunts noncommittally.
"How are we doing boss?" Raxy asks, potting up souvenir Tsin fungus with Atrix moss and human basil.
O'Patel flashes an OK hand sign. "We are... hitting the funding goals. One more shift - This time it's for the bonus pay." he says with satisfaction and Big Ma looks around, checking everyone's ready as someone helps Cat Fantastic back into his cockpit basket and Gondy makes sure there's enough grenadine left.
"OK people... Showtime!"

Examples of Va'ruun Matriarchy weaponry -
The two blades - one physical, one energy based - are not necessarily needed for close combat, thanks to Va'ruun physiology providing them with quite lethal natural weapons.
However, they are used anyway, because to the Va'ruun, the use of one's claws and tail and teeth in combat is seen as uncouth. The energy blade uses gravitic and magnetic fields to hold in place a blade of energy similar to that produced by particle beam weaponry, shaped to allow for cutting and slicing attacks. The physical blade has been sharpened to near mono-molecular levels, allowing it to cut through virtually all known armor, including starship hulls (rumors that AC Navy boarding teams carry such a blade as an emergency boarding access tool are groundless for a variety of reasons, but persist nonetheless).
The two ranged weapons are both particle beam weapons of extremely advanced make, direct holdovers from their creators. Extremely lightweight and nearly always fitted with advanced scopes and/or remote neuro-ocular interfaces, the weapons possess only a few downsides - namely a short, but notable recalibration cycle after each shot that lowers their rate of fire compared to more conventional weaponry, and a near black-box level of manufacturing opacity that renders their production, and their upkeep, economically unviable outside the Va'ruun Matriarchy.
Originally, these ranged weapons could be configured to fire from "annihilator packs", which used a still poorly-studied phenomenon to inflict a debilitating, wasting effect over a small area of impact. This effect can somehow propagate into organic matter, turning it to carbonized dust in a slow and painful manner, earning the weapons their infamous nicknames of "Gorgon" and "Basilisk".
The Va'ruun Matriarchy has, in conjunction with most governments in settled space, banned the use of "annihilator packs". All data related to the effect and construction of such power packs is sealed in the Centauri Accords Archive in a deep-crust bunker under the Astral Confederation capital city, along with any other technology deemed unacceptable for use in warfare. Most extant examples have been altered to prevent annihilator packs from being used.
However, despite this near-total ban, annihilator packs still occasionally can be found on the grey and black markets, and sometimes see use among particularly unscrupulous agents of the Hunter's Guild.
The rare legal packs are in the direct possession of the Va'ruun Matriarchy's Royal Guard, or else consigned to the collection of specific individuals/collective entities registered with the Confederation. Each of these individuals has applied for, and been granted, a permit for their use in historical education, and is allowed one annihilator pack. All are implanted with tracking devices and tamper sensors, to detect any attempt to steal or disassemble them. When the registered owner dies, the packs are confiscated, as they are considered property of the Astral Confederation, until such time as another individual applies for a permit.

Johnny's outfits across the expansions
I've seen a couple other people do this type of post, and it looked fun! I did use a lot more than just these outfits, but these were the ones I used the most often during each expansion.
A Realm Reborn
Tumblr media
I did not find very many caster glam options I liked in ARR, LOL. It's especially ironic considering my paladin outfit is almost entirely ARR stuff. The staff at least is pretty cute; the front side looks like a ladybug. Favored mount was the Magitek Walker.
Heavensward
Tumblr media
I switched to Red Mage for this expansion, and the outfit is pretty red as a result.
Stormblood
Tumblr media
Tataru making me an outfit that matched everyone else was the first time I really felt like I was a full member of the Scions! Of course I wore it through the whole expansion. This was also when I met Alpha, who I have out almost all the time! Favored mount: Regalia Type G
Shadowbringers
Tumblr media
Once I got off the free trial, I immediately spent all my gil on clothes at the market board. A friend also traded me the Moogle staff, which I still treasure.
Endwalker
Tumblr media
Easily my favorite expansion. I played the first half with the Omega set, but switched to this when I got it. I think it captures the feel of a max level mage, but in a subtle way that isn't ancient greek robes or something completely shrouded in particle effects. Favored mount: Perenelle, my original chocobo!
Dawntrail
Tumblr media
I made an outfit to match Krile, and it turned out to be a really cute idea! It was fun standing next to her in cutscenes. I also had another outfit using the pvp armor that had a nice "Royal Guard" feel for when I was on official business. Favored mount: Skyslipper

"why does everyone suddenly know so much about perfume???" the focus of developing a sense of self that can be consumed has reached far beyond the surface (fashion n beauty YouTubers are not doing well in an era focused more on thrifting/quality pieces and natural looks) so those that are floundering for a personality, something to fill that void, a signifier to other people that empties their pockets and provides them busy work and a community and makes them feel smart, have reached for fragrance. a boom in indie fragrances has allowed people to find themselves, and an expanding dupe market has made it far less expensive of a hobby. also weird tumblr bitches are approaching their 30s and it's one of those adult things like finding a favorite $20 wine or a dresser not made of particle board.

Looking at furniture to provide Basic Furnishings for my new flat next month and yup furniture is also suffering from being made shit + more expensive to cut costs. Like ikea stuff - already notoriously cheap and flimsy - is either being made plastic or they're replacing wood veneers with literally fucking paper. And its still more expensive than it was. And they're marketing this as "eco friendly, using less wood :)" to offset the part where they're replacing wooden components with plastic and solid wood with (plastic) glue particle board. Death.

favourite and / or least favourite societal trend(s) vampire margerethe has witnessed in her time seeing the world change?
so this was really fun to think about!
vampire margarethe is like regular marg but very... burnt and hollowed out. where og marg is a highly social and socialized person, vampire marg is separated from human life and lacks community and interaction. she is always looking for some form of interaction in order to give her stimulation and energy, but she's so depressed it doesn't usually work. so she's different from og marg, who would be very up to date on trends so that she could follow them. she's not so plugged in to the cultural changes, especially once they start happening on social media, because she really does not understand the internet lmao.
i think the one trend overall, a longer-term one, that really disgusts her is globalization + mass production and the way that it dilutes artisanship and lessens quality. at her core, she's a snob and a classist. she doesn't like the dispersal of "high art" and various kinds of goods into the homes of the less-than, and all cheap reproductions of furniture, art, home goods, etc. disturb and disgust her. she hates, for example, anything made out of particle board. she hates any 'artwork' or 'craft good' that came off a factory line. she hates fast fashion. obviously as i touch on above, part of this is hating the diffusion of "culture" from the upper class into the lower.
another part of this is that she is a believer in craftsmanship, art, provenance, and skilled work. that's not noble on her part; again, she is a snob and a consumer, and the reason she feels this way isn't a noble ideal nor a marxist critique. it's because she can see and feel that high-quality valuable goods are swamped in a market of products made cheaply on assembly lines and thrown out to the masses as free-market balms for our capitalism-pulverized psyches.
she feels much the same way about the globalization and industrialization of food, but because she very rarely eats human food anymore, she has less cause to polish this particular hatred.
this isn't to say that these trends didn't have precedents in her own time, but the rapid progression of technology, economies, etc. since, oh, the mid-late 1800s has been pretty insane for her to witness, and these trends have never been so intense or present before in history.
thank you so, so much for sending this in!

Worldbuilding more on my headcanon here:
With the reveal that the recent wash of Dynamax energy. plus the lingering higher levels. plus the fact that they are bad in general for health because they are poison-typed are one factor in the rising level of allergies and autoimmune diseases after the Darkest Day...
I wonder what’s the response of various people in and outside of Galar? The list of potential / likely reactions is open-ended and focused on the human side of things:
- Some people would panic. Who can does send their children abroad longterm like in boarding schools and / or to relatives, or at least abroad for the summer vacation. The same goes for their other relatives, often those with weak constitutions. It leads to a lot of tensions in many families.
- Some people try to move themselves out of Galar, either on their own or with their family. Or they try to spend as much time abroad as possible.
- The two points above are good for travel agencies who focus on outbound travels; they sometimes also get overwhelmed with inquiries. It can be bad for local economy who rely on people to buy their wares during vacation time.
- Spikemuth faces an unexpected rush of tourists and people trying to move here. The same goes for Wedgehurst and Postwick, all towns and cities which don’t have Powerspots on their own and are relatively far away from the next ones. Some large companies intend to gentrify the towns / cities to attract rich investors and get more money.
- Some locations actively market their distance to powerspots, many of them former seaside resorts that update their services.
- The market that offers products for protection against Dynamax particles metaphorically skyrockets in the number of products and companies. This includes scams, unfortunately.
- Some regions issue warnings to their population to avoid Galar and / or follow safety instructions while there like staying inside as much as possible.

MECH A DAY:01 cerberus bio - frame brought you by Ember rose collective
Hey going to be trying my had at doing a thing this month were i try and make a mech or mechanical design a day for this month since I'm tired of not really getting a chance to work on much of the things i want to with stuff. going to try and write up some lore for each of them too don't know if it'll be good but i want to TRY and get better at writing too so this be a way to hit two birds with one stone.
if you like this and want to help me out with making stuff like this and trying to be more creative for myself my kofi and patreon are on the sidebar of my page.
LORE. after there defection during of the first Cradle war the E.R.C was at a loss as to how to process the post war edicts that had been pass down to them by the nova accords. by degree, the pride and face of the E.R.C the RAPTOR-R-BIO-2X was outlawed as well as several of it base technology's. the venerable machine used by the earth collation to savage the many outer colonies and bring about the massacre on dauntless was enough to restrict the broad strokes of the technology but once they found out about the after effects of the full integration interface system on the pilots and how the E.R.C had been complicit in allowing that to happen do to the earths interest for brutal elite soldiers, the nova council almost had most of the board executed and the company dispended. This was initial judgement was walked back after an impassioned speech by the head of the board as well as the reminded that the E.R.C had switch side and provided a series of countermeasures for many of the earths more devastation weapons' and defenses in the towards the end of the war and did allow the company to not be savaged like that of the vanguard technologies or tri-oceanic's group. the trials and meeting of nova council would find much of the tech that the collective had been there cutting edge in the markets of weapons design and planetary colonization had been outlawed by there decree regardless of there own pleas.
unable to move forward with the previous project and not will to rock the boat in the post war period with so many eye on them, the E.R.C decided to work around there current limitations. as while they could not mess the consciousness of pilot and machine, they could at least create a in-between system with the creation of the pseudo-brain. a imperfect creation of a human brain that can be linked up with two other brains into a internal network of a bio-frame. this network will take the imputes from a more standard pilot interface and help to intuit and learned from the pilot making there own reflexes faster and allowing them to quickly react and deal with situations as they com. alongside that the bio-frames biological systems means that normal anti system attacks are near impossible and the collective promises of a the development communication brain has many interest peaked at the prospect of subverting jamming technology. outfitted with a more modest version of the raptors weapons' and lacking many of it biologicals weapons' the Cerberus boasts two high medium particle cannons in two of it arms, another two have a pair nano-seared talons and a small burst laser mounted on it wrist to help add an extra punch while the talons dig into it targets. it armored with a series of light plating and nano fiber layer over top the base bio-frame to give moderate protection to it internal components. to make up for it lack of extreme fire power and armor it predecessor had the Cerberus has been design to have an extreme speed of 97.2 km/h surpassing it predicators 64 km/h as well as being flight capable.
Still the system was not with out it flaws, it still retained the weakness to electrical pulse weapons' that would cause the biological systems to short circlet and finding after the initial test run the engineers sound found that they had a problem as each of the brains after a point would begin to over react with stimulate and run rampant. this rampant while rare is still a major concerns as most are unsure why and how the brain seem to be overloading the other more less know is the brain mimicry of the pilots action seems to represent a problem were some aspect or part of the pilot is being copied over into the brains network. Still the Cerberus has been moved into full production in spite of these problems as well as concerns from any compliance board can be fixed with a bit of economic leveraged as the E.R.C may be humbled the still retain much of the benefits for there time creating the RAPTOR for it time as a primary weapons' manufacturer for the earth collation.
(if there any spelling or grammatical weirdness sorry wrote this all in one sitting before i had to get to work on commissions.)

Light-fast? My pigment is a fugitive and ran away with the sun!
Okay, okay, you're about to be subjected to one of my favourite topics, so if you have no interest in traditional art and why some stuff fades away (quite literally) then move along.
But if you're like me, and you want to know more about pigments vs dyes and why your pink thing has over time become a white thing, keep reading…
So, my interest, aka my dive into the rabbit hole that is lightfastness, started way back when I made a friend a bright pink thing (cheap student grade acrylic paint on canvas board) , they hung it up in their window, and it slowly turned into a white thing.
Gasp! Shock! Horror!
No really, I was slightly traumatized, simply because I was about to start selling my artwork and if it was going to fade away in the space of a year odd, then I was going to have a big problem. I mean, you can't sell art and then tell people they must keep it in a dark place and only observe it under moonlight. Well okay you probably could if you marketed it right, but I'm terrible at marketing and the idea of someone coming back to complain about the art disappearing gives me anxiety.
So I went on a hunt to find out WHY.
So let's talk about pigments vs dyes and what fugitive pigments are, and why artist grade is so much more expensive than student grade.
What's the difference between pigments and dyes?
Think of paint made from pigments as a suspension, finely ground up particles are suspended in a medium, much like mixing sand into water. If you let a sandy water mix sit for long enough the sand particles will sink to the bottom and separate from the water. Pigment based paint sits on the surface of your canvas or paper (yep even watercolours, the paper gets wet, but when it dries the pigments are sitting on the surface, they haven't sunk in and bonded with the paper). Pigment based paint is more inclined to be opaque.
Paint made from dyes are a solution, very very finely ground particles are dissolved into a medium and change their chemical makeup, you can let them sit as long as you like and they won't separate. Dyes sink into the surface of the paper or canvas. Dyes are naturally transparent. Dyes are used for fabric precisely because they sink into the surface and bond with it.
So, those fugitive pigments huh?
I'll start with the kicker, dyes, by their very nature, are fugitive. Let me explain that a bit more - dyes are a solution, they have chemically bonded with the medium and because of this chemical change they are much more vulnerable to UV light, to the point they can completely disappear. Alcohol markers are a prime example of this. This is also why clothing fades over time.
Any fluorescent colour is fugitive. Don't ask me why, they just are.
So what about pigments? Well, if you mix them with oil, pretty much all the pigments will manage to stick around, oil creates a protective coating that shields the pigments from UV light.
Not so with other mediums though, so some pigments will fade over time. As paint companies have become aware of this, they have tried to find alternative pigments that are light-fast and you will find a light-fast rating on good brands of paint.
The white factor.
White tends to be opaque and is very light-fast, it's usually PW6 pigment for titanium white and PW5 for zinc white, which is also known as the mixing white and is supposedly less opaque - personally I can't tell the difference.
So, white, all good, gonna use white which is light-fast and this tube of red which is also listed as light-fast and make pink, no worries right? Wrong.
Mixing white into other pigments can make them less light-fast. Why???? I hear you scream.
It's to do with (someone correct me if I'm wrong but this is my understanding) the fact white reflects light, so as soon as you mix another pigment into white, not only is the concentration of the pigment reduced, it's also at the mercy of all that extra light. Some pigments are naturally very light-fast anyway and being mixed with white won't be much of an issue.
Avoiding the known fugitive pigments is a good start to ensuring your artwork is going to stick around for the long haul, of course painting in oils is more of a guarantee but not everyone can be bothered with the mess.
Tumblr media
So, artist grade vs student grade?
In general artist grade paint will have a light-fast rating, list the pigments used AND most importantly they will contain much more pigment and better quality pigments than cheaper paints. More pigment means stronger more vibrant colours, you need less paint to cover a surface, there are no fillers like chalk to make the paint opaque and the quality of the pigments is higher. Basically when you buy artist grade paint you are paying for the pigments used, you're more likely to find single pigment paints and the pigments are more likely to be light-fast.
Of course oil paint can pretty much ignore this, buy whatever works for you, it's not going to matter much.
What about student grade? Well, student grade from a reputable brand may still give you a list of pigments and a light-fast rating, you can feel pretty assured that the paint will perform as required, but the pigments will be cheaper and less concentrated. If, like me, you have found yourself utterly annoyed you can't get a vibrant enough look from your student grade paint no matter how much you apply, then this is why, it simply doesn't have the same amount of pigment as the artist grade in the same brand does. While the artist grade is more expensive, my personal findings with watercolours are that I use much less of it because it is more pigmented, so it works out more cost effective in the long run.
Student grade will often substitute an original pigment for a 'hue', like 'cadmium red hue' which is a replication of the colour and doesn't actually contain the cadmium red pigment. So you get a lower cost pigment in a lesser concentration.
Student grade paint generally won't be as concerned with using light-fast pigments, so you're more likely to find less permanent pigments and also pigment mixtures rather than pure single pigment paints.
What's the difference between single pigment and mixed pigment? Glad you asked. It's the mud factor, we've all mixed paints together and come out with a sludgy grey muddy colour right? Mixed pigment paints when they contain multiple pigments are more likely to give you dull muddy colour when you mix them with other paints, simply because mixing complimentary colours together will give you a neutral grey. (Stares hatefully at reeves watercolours, my first experience with mud production and chalkiness)
Single pigment paints are easier to mix vibrant colours with.
What about student grade, or ungraded paint from non recognized brands? Well, generally they make up their own names for the colours, they give you no pigment or light-fast rating (though many claim to be light-fast, they show no actual ratings and can't be trusted) and they can often contain dyes as well as fugitive pigments, because they are cheaper to use. They will contain a lot of fillers and less pigments, and can be harder and more frustrating to use. It's not always the case of course, but in general you get what you pay for.
Finally, designer mediums vs art mediums.
Or - was never intended to last vs meant to be hung on a wall.
Some currently popular and commonly used mediums were never intended for preservation. They were created for design, be it architecture, fashion design, magazine illustrations or other things that were made to be photographed and then reproduced in print.
Prime examples of this are alcohol markers and gouache. They were never ever intended to be light-fast, they were made for quick execution and reproduction, the original was often just thrown out.
Gouache, because it dries fast and is matte makes it perfect for both quick turnaround illustrations and reproduction. The matte surface makes photography easy without any worries about reflected light messing up the image. It was used extensively in the magazine and printed periodical industry.
Alcohol markers were more aimed at the design industry.
Gouache, by it's very design tends to still be very inclined to use fugitive pigments, Windsor & Newton do have some with high light-fast ratings, but you have to read the labels carefully and if you use the paint as a wash it's still going to say goodbye faster than it should (it's the white factor again, this time it's the white of the paper).
Alcohol markers, as I've said before, are dye based, and are highly fugitive. (Do I get mad when people sell original art done in alcohol markers, yeah, a little bit, I feel bad for the person buying it who presumably wants to put it on the wall and it IS going to fade away. I don't see anything wrong with selling the artwork, markers have their own charm and the effects are quite unique, but you should at least warn people that it's fugitive)
Most calligraphy inks designed to go inside pens are dye based and will fade. (Gel writing pens too, even in closed books that will fade drastically, ask me how I know!) (Pigment based ones tend to clog so are reserved for dip pens and brushes, and are usually mixed with shellac to make them waterproof. )
Don't be put off using these mediums, they are great fun to play around with, just be aware that they are not designed to be exposed to light for long periods of time are best for reproduction as prints.
Can you enhance the lightfastness of a painting?
Yep, put it behind glass (perspex is even better?). I think it's possible to find UV resistant varnish too, but don't quote me on that, I haven't seen any myself. I don't think this is a reliable method for dye based art though sadly, while watercolours behind glass will last longer, some dyes can fade away even without light on them (see the gel pen experience)
Can you do your own lightfastness test on your mediums?
Sure can, as long as you have a control swatches kept in a dark place, you can put swatches in direct sunlight and compare them to the ones you kept in the dark to see how much they have faded and how long it took. Some will show no signs of fade even after a year of direct sunlight, some might disappear completely, it will depend on the pigments.
So there you have it, the lowdown on the difference between pigments and dyes, why your medium of choice makes a difference to how long your artwork will last and what makes artist grade what it is.

Hot fun in the summertime.
Tumblr media
Spouse & I on vacation for 2 weeks. Planned: at-home relaxation, gardening, as many movies as we can watch, home cooking from scratch, and day trips for thrifting, antiquing, and flea-marketing. We rested up for the last two days so that we could launch with a bang-- 3 thrift stores across 60 miles in 4 hours. Some good scores, including the above psychedelic paperweight for two bucks.
The biggest event that will occur during our vacation is our golden anniversary. Twenty-five years ago we went to the courthouse hand in hand, so happy that the judge actually remarked on it. Most couples who come to me to get married seem like they just got done fighting five minutes before, he said. It's refreshing to see two people glad about what they're getting into. In my opinion, having been good friends for six years before we fell in love made all the difference.
We spent our 1st anniversary sitting on our apartment floor assembling a prefab hutch cupboard from a Sauder kit while a tropical storm roared outside. For two dozen years and in at least three different homes, that cupboard has faithfully housed my altar objects and books. But it's starting to get wobbly (after all, it's made of mere laminated particle board) so at long last we ordered a solid oakwood replacement. If Invest 95L revs up as predicted, we might be assembling the new cupboard in the midst of yet another tempest. However, the old cupboard will live on, separated into two parts-- the upper display portion to go in my sitting room, the lower cabinet portion to sit in the foyer and catch our housekeys and mail.
What else? I rewarded myself for writing the Jersey Devil play by splurging on a lithium battery-powered handheld engraver so I can scrimshaw some drinking horns this fall. (I bet you have NEVER encountered all of those particular words in one sentence before.) To that end, I'm also sourcing out some cleaned/polished horns to work with. I also need to find the right gauge of sheet metal for embossing the rim as shown below.
Tumblr media
Tomorrow morning I'm going to my first biofeedback appointment. This was prescribed by the neuropsychologist, who reiterated that my short-term "working" memory loss, chronic insomnia, and lowered immunity all result from overwhelming, crippling anxiety. My workplace being what it is lately, I believe it. I am giving that place and the people who run it too much of my energy, my creativity, and - inevitably - my health. I am determined to shift it all back home and give it reasons to STAY there. The engraver is essentially a bribe. I hope I fall for it.

How to Choose Safe and Durable Furniture for Kids
Tumblr media
Choosing furniture for kids involves more than just aesthetics and comfort; safety and durability are paramount. Whether you're furnishing a child's bedroom, playroom, or a balcony space, ensuring that the furniture is safe and can withstand the wear and tear of daily use is essential.
Safety First: Key Considerations
Materials Matter
Selecting furniture for kids should always be done with premium materials. Particle board and plastic are often less durable than solid wood and metal. To ensure your youngster doesn't come into contact with dangerous substances, look for furniture with non-toxic finishes. For instance, when browsing for online kids' furniture for the balcony, ensure the materials are weather-resistant and free from toxic substances.
Sturdy Construction
Rough use should not be a problem for sturdy furniture. Verify the security of all joints and connections. In addition to being dangerous, furniture that wobbles or seems flimsy is also unlikely to last. This is particularly important for items like kids' chairs in Delhi, where the furniture must handle active use.
Rounded Edges and Corners
Children are more likely to fall and bump into things, so sharp edges and corners can be dangerous. Seek for rounded-edge furniture or think about protecting the edges of items that already exist. This is crucial for preschool furniture for the balcony, where active play often occurs.
Stable and Secure
Ensure that heavier pieces of furniture are stable and, if necessary, can be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping. This is especially important for taller items like bookshelves or cabinets.
Durability: Built to Last
Weather-Resistant Options for Outdoor Use
Select weather-resistant furnishings when choosing items for a balcony. For instance, treated wood, metal, or premium plastic are good materials for kids' balcony furniture that won't break down easily in the sun, rain, or wind.
Easy to Clean
Kids' furniture should be easy to clean, as leaks and mess are inevitable. Seek for finishes and materials that are easily cleaned without causing surface damage. This is especially crucial for luxury furniture in Delhi, where it's also necessary to preserve the furniture's visual appeal.
Versatility and Adjustability
In the long term, furniture that grows with your child may be more resilient. Seek for features that can be adjusted, such extendable tables or seats with height adjustments. The balcony furniture for kindergartens should be adaptable enough to suit a range of activities and age groups.
Specific Types of Furniture
Kids' Chairs
When searching for kids' chairs in Delhi, prioritize models that offer ergonomic support and are made from sturdy materials. Ensure the chairs are proportionate to the child's size to provide comfort and prevent strain.
Kindergarten and Preschool Furniture
For kindergarten furniture for the balcony, consider pieces that encourage both play and learning. Tables and chairs should be lightweight enough for children to move but sturdy enough to stay in place during activities. Safety is key, so look for features like rounded edges and stable bases.
Luxury Furniture
When opting for luxury furniture in Delhi, balance elegance with practicality. High-end pieces should still meet the safety and durability criteria, ensuring they are not only beautiful but also functional and safe for children.
Kids' Furniture in Delhi
The market for kids' furniture in Delhi offers a wide range of options, from budget-friendly to luxury. Regardless of the price point, ensure that every piece meets safety standards and is built to last. Look for reputable brands and retailers that provide detailed information about the materials and construction of their products.
Shopping Tips
Read Reviews and Ratings
Read other parents' reviews and ratings before making a purchase. This may shed light on how long-lasting and secure the furniture will be in actual use.
Check for Recalls
Verify whether there have been any safety recalls affecting the furniture you have chosen. Making sure you're purchasing safe products requires taking this crucial step.
Visit Physical Stores
Online buying may be convenient, but going to genuine shops may enable you to directly inspect the furniture to determine its quality and durability. If you're shopping for kids' furniture in Delhi, for example, going to local retailers might give you a better idea of the quality and finish of the furniture.
Consider Customization
Certain manufacturers provide customisation choices that let you select particular features or finishes that work best for you. This can be very helpful when trying to fit furniture into odd balcony areas.
Conclusion
While getting kids' furniture, look for high-quality materials, solid construction, rounded edges, and stable designs to ensure safety and durability. For outdoor use, give preference to weather-resistant, easily cleaned items and take into account adaptable, adjustable alternatives. You may give your child a secure, long-lasting environment by concentrating on these elements.
