'Evenin', folks...Mr. Baggins here with some music to soothe our achin' nerves and help ease us all into a good night. Let's start with Haydn's Piano Concerto No. 9 in G Major, Hob.XVIII:9, from our survey of the complete piano concertos of Haydn. Our pianist for this survey is Massimo Palumbo, with the Austrian Chamber Symphony, conducted by Ernst Theis.

Next we hear the first of the "Leonore" Overtures that Beethoven wrote, The Leonore Overture 1, Op. 138, performed for us by Claudio Abbado conducting the Vienna.

Here is a lovely oboe sonata from Camille Saint-Saenz, his Oboe Sonata in D Major, Op. 166, played for us by oboist Albrecht Mayer, with pianist Karina Wisniewska. I got this CD after hearing this piece on KMFA back in the day.

We turn next to Schubert's Incidental Music to Rosamunde, D. 797, performed for us here in a splendid reading by George Szell conducting the Royal Concertgebow Orchestra, from 1957.

Next we hear the String Symphony No. 9 of a fifteen-year-old Felix Mendelssohn, performed for us, as have all in this series, by the Northern Chamber Orchestra, with Nicholas Ward conducting.

Now let's hear the music of Debussy, his "Images" for piano, played by French pianist Pascal Rogé.

We turn next to Chopin, his Variations in B-flat on "Là ci darem la mano" from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" for piano and orchestra, Op. 2 London Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Eliahu Inbal, and the wonderful Claudio Arrau is our pianist.

Let's stay with this same ensemble and hear them play two of Chopin's lesser-aired pieces, his Krakowiak - Concert Rondo in F, Op. 14, and his Fantasy On Polish Airs In A, Op. 13

And that wraps up our program for this evening. I do hope you have enjoyed the selections and possibly heard something new to your ear. Mr. Baggins, signing off for now, but I will return at 8am Pacific with our Morning Coffee Music.

當故事開始時，Eben 不僅陷於物質的貧困，連創作力也頻於絕境，

如他自己所說 ：「 藝術家還有一種痛苦，比起冬天或貧窮還要糟些，

這不如說是一種心靈的冬天，在這中間他天才的生命，他活躍的工作

力都似乎冰凍，陷於 － 也許永遠 － 一種死的季節，誰知道春天是否

還會再來，將它解凍呢 ？」

這時他遇見了書中的女主角 Jennie。那是冬天的一個黃昏，在溼霧

掠過空落落的樹蔭道，平時遊戲的兒童都已回家了，只剩下光秃幽暗

的樹叢，Eben 跑了一整天，一張畫也沒賣出去，又冷，又餓，市聲

漸息漸遠，就好像聲發自過去的某一地方。他覺得自己的身體很輕，

沒有重量，彷彿黃昏的空氣所造成的一樣。總之，飢餓與寒冷把

Eben 折磨得有些精神恍惚了。

一個孤零零的小女孩在做「跳房子」的遊戲，兩腿一分，躍在空中，

像蒲公英種子般默默落下來。

一個好奇，一個天真，他們攀談了起來，這小姑娘似無心，又似詭譎

地和他對答著。他的裝束很古老，她有著「 不全屬於現在的神態 」，

她的父母在一個音樂廳表演，但這個音樂廳在很多年以前，當 Eben

還在孩提的時候便拆毀了。她唱歌給他聽，用一種清晰但不入調的

聲音 ：

我的來處 無人知曉

我的去處 萬有的歸宿

風吹 海嘯

無人知曉

後來他們分開了。「 我希望你等我長大 」，小姑娘說，「 但是你不

會等的，我想。」

之後，Eben 一直無法忘記這小姑娘，尤其是那隻小歌，正因為它不入

調，才使人難以忘記。他從記憶中為這小女孩畫了一張速寫，並著了

一點顏色。

小姑娘給他帶來了好運，三天之後，他又去看一個美術陳列室的主人

馬修士。左一張右一張都不合意，這張隨便畫畫的速寫竟意外獲得青

睞，馬修士不但以高價買下，並且囑他再為那小姑娘畫一張偉大的

畫像。

他不知道她的住所，之後她卻自己來了，而且總是那麼來無影去

無蹤。不可避免的，Eben 與 Jennie 也有了羅曼史。在一次長久

的別離之後，珍妮畫像被首都博物館以高價收購了。Eben 便買舟

遨遊，追求刺激的生活以沖淡 Jennie 的 想念，不管在荒島、沙灘

上，他連睡覺也夢見 Jennie。一天，颶風來了，在狂流襲擊的海灘

上，他們又相遇了，可是她已氣衰力竭，閉著眼睛，無力逃脫這場

浩劫。海浪上來了，Eben 想抱住她一同流去，但海浪又把他們分開

了。Eben 只覺得被巨浪拋上去又摔下來，再拋上去，此後便失去了

知覺。

洪水退後，Eben 被掛在樹上而經人救起，Jennie 卻失蹤了。報上的

消息說她是在歐遊歸國途中被海浪捲去，所有因為那張畫像而知道

她的人，都為她哀悼，並且掛念著 Eben 。

來無影去無蹤的一段羅曼史，與作者塑造出來的 Jennie － 天真、

淳樸、灑脫、愛嬌、癡話連連。她說 ：「 這個世界多美麗，艾平，

它不是為任何東西，就只為了美而造成。我們是否現在活著 ？還是

很久以前 ？」

當 Eben 探訪 Jennie 下落而消息杳然，他這樣寫著 ：「 這使我覺得

我周遭的世界異樣的空虛、靜寂，空虛得有如提琴箱，只要一個曲子

就可以具有生命，成為一個樂器，但是曲子沒人去演奏，沒人去撫觸

它，它就只是一個空匣子而已。」
