was talking to my mom about how white people ignore the contributions of poc to academia and I found myself saying the words "I bet those idiots think Louis Pasteur was the first to discover germ theory"
which admittedly sounded pretentious as fuck but I'm just so angry that so few people know about the academic advancements during the golden age of Islam.
Islamic doctors were washing their hands and equipment when Europeans were still shoving dirty ass hands into bullet wounds. ancient Indians were describing tiny organisms worsening illness that could travel from person to person before Greece and Rome even started theorizing that some illnesses could be transmitted
also, not related to germ theory, but during the golden age of Islam, they developed an early version of surgery on the cornea. as in the fucking eye. and they were successful
and what have white people contributed exactly?
please go research the golden age of Islamic academia. so many of us wouldn't be alive today if not for their discoveries
people ask sometimes how I can be proud to be Muslim. this is just one of many reasons
some sources to get you started:
but keep in mind, it wasn't just science and medicine! we contributed to literature and philosophy and mathematics and political theory and more!
maybe show us some damn respect

Jungle Gym [Kidnapped Reader + True Knot]
Title: Jungle Gym [Kidnapped Reader + True Knot]
Synopsis: You were supposed to get tortured tonight. Instead, you hid. Companion piece to Pasteurized.
Word count: 1171
notes: kidnapped reader, descriptions of past torture, reader is afab; combination of movie and book canon
Tumblr media
At 9 PM, an hour when the sun had set and the sky was deep blue-black and all dotted with stars, you were supposed to head down to the clearing and sit nice and pretty and wait for Rose the Hat to strike the first blow.
Literally, the first blow. This was not some metaphorical musing or purple prose. She usually started your torture sessions (they were, of course, the True Knot’s feeding sessions) with a solid kick to the ribs or the side, to knock you down, and get you in a nice prone position for whatever was coming next.
The sharp pain, she said, was a bit like dropping a steak onto a sizzling hot pain. It gave your flavor a nice crust.
You had done this dutifully for some years now. When you were a child, they dragged you there or Crow Daddy took your hand and led you there without giving you room to struggle; you had no choice. As you got older, it became something of a chore marked on a calendar.
Friday: Make bed, wash dishes, head down to the bonfire to get tortured for hours.
It was something you did because you were supposed to, because the alternative was worse. Because some sick part of you wanted them to like you, and not making them work hard for their food seemed to do just that.
Tonight, though, you didn’t brace yourself and walk down to the clearing. You snuck out of the little camper where you lived with Silent Sarey and crawled, silent as you please, to the creaky old playground set up away from camp. A public playground where anyone staying at the campground could go.
It was a stupid move, in all respects. They would find you. They would hurt you more for giving them trouble. Especially when they treated you so well; that was always the line when you were younger. You should be grateful that they didn’t chain you up like a dog in the dark.
And you were grateful, most of the time. Really. Truly. You were grateful every time you got a birthday cake or Rose the Hat had a civil conversation instead of sneering at you like a smart-mouthed roast dinner. You were grateful for your bed and your notebooks and your magazines.
You were grateful for Crow Daddy--your daddy--who made sure you got schooling and took you to the movies and always treated you with care, so long as you acted right.
But there was only so much pain you could take. And tonight, you could take no more.
Not that it mattered what you could take.
It’s Crow Daddy who finds you. And you know that it was probably on purpose, because he’s the only one whose presence wouldn’t immediately make you want to bolt. To convince you to come willingly, so there wouldn’t be a scene. If they were fine with you screaming and kicking, they might have sent Barry to drag you by your armpits or heaven forbid, Rose, all simmering anger to draw you out with threats.
But instead it’s Crow Daddy who kneels in front of the jungle gym. It was the only piece of equipment big enough for you to fit under. Woodchips dig into your thighs, and you shift uncomfortably on the ground.
“Hey, there,” he says. Casual as you please. Like you weren’t tucked under a piece of playground equipment at night, hiding from your tormentors.
You bite down hard on the inside of your cheek and keep your eyes staring down at your lap. If you don’t talk, you can stay here longer. Delay the inevitable.
He sighs, a slow, soft sound in the night. Crickets sing behind his breath.
“Well. Didn’t think you hated me so much, honey.”
Something lurches in your chest, and you look up. The moonlight plays on Crow Daddy’s face. He looks serious and sad and Christ, worst of all, disappointed in you.
“What? No, I don’t hate you, I-”
Crow Daddy shakes his head, cutting you off. “You want me to starve, is that it? Me and Miss Rose? And Grandpa Flick, too? You saw he’s been using a cane lately. But I guess you want him to go on hurtin’.”
Tears prick at your eyes. Grandpa Flick had been walking stiffly the past few weeks. Rose had been helping him up and down. He didn’t have the skip in his step that he got right after, well--right after he fed on your tortured, nourishing steam.
Was it wrong, to feel bad for him? He was one of the people who kidnapped you, but he wasn’t so bad when he was in a good mood. He got you presents and patted your head and told you old, old, old stories.
And Crow Daddy, of course, of course you didn’t want him to hurt.
“I don’t want you to starve, daddy. Or Miss Rose or anyone. I would never…”  You would never what, you think? Never run away? It wasn’t a possibility. Never deny them food? You didn’t have a choice.
He gestures for you to come closer, and you obey. The wood chips dig into your knees as you crawl out from underneath the jungle gym and sit in front of Crow Daddy, who gives you a once over.
“Then why are you hiding when you know it’s supper, hm?”
There are a million things you could say.
All you do is whimper stupidly. The ghosts of pains past ripple through your memory. The knives, the beatings. The crowbars. The hornets.
“It’ll hurt.”
Crow Daddy puts one firm hand on your shoulder.
“I know, sweetheart. It’s gotta hurt, though. Don’t you want us to stay nice and strong?”
You nod. There’s only one answer he wants. He’s kind enough to take your hand and lead you right to it.
“Yes, daddy.”
His serious frown breaks into a smile, and you smile, too. Not because you’re happy but because when he smiles it means he’s not disappointed in you and in this big fucked up world, that’s all you have.
He chucks your chin with his fingers.
“That’s my girl.”
He stands, and extends his hand, and you take it. He grips it tight as he leads you away from the playground and towards the flickering light of the bonfire in the distance. You try not to fight against what’s coming, which will surely be worse than whatever they had planned originally. Instead you just accept it. Accept that you’re going to walk straight into a den of creatures that are going to hurt you until your throat is bleeding raw from the screams.
You wonder: will your bittersweet acceptance tonight add a new flavor to the taste of your steam?
And did it matter? What truly mattered was the pain. It was the pain that purified your steam and made it filling and nourishing, like ultra-concentrated vitamins that they inhaled in the darkness of the night.
After all--
It’s gotta hurt.

Somehow bionicle is in this one
Listening: I looked at the date on my oven yesterday and it was 08-10 and I was like hey isn't that Bionicle Day. The answer is no, because it's Americans and Bionicle Day was the tenth of August. Anyway turns out that this year some fans got the original voice of Vakama to do a tribute video? And also Cryoshell dropped a new song.
youtube
Cryoshell is one of the funniest bands I know. They had little success until they got contracted in by an ad agency to do music for Bionicle, they did Creeping in My Soul for the Voya Nui arc in 2007 and ended up getting contracted in basically every year after that to whip up some music for Bionicle. They remain to this day extremely closely associated with the Bionicle fandom, like, you know, releasing their latest track on Bionicle day.
youtube
They are, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, and with all the love in my heart, the Evanescence we have at home. Bionicle had just saved Lego less than a decade earlier and the media effort around Bionicle was very well designed, which included making the perfect AMV soundtrack for 13 year olds to set their stop motion Bionicle fight scenes to. Of course I don't know anything about using a webcam and extremely dubious stop motion software to produce extensive Bionicle fanvideos. What are you talking about.
I am going to leave it here but there is so much to say about Cryoshell. Seriously just go look it up. Their music is actually very good if you like that particular symphonic metal alt rock style that was so emblematic of the 2000's.
Reading: Ended up on a research dive about small towns, because I now live in a country with a lot of small towns. Attempting to do and find a comparative anatomy of how small towns are administered around the world and what drives their success or failure. There is a lot of stuff from the Trump years when he apparently made some gestures towards the idea that people should just move out of doomed towns.
As always in the USA, housing affects everything, both in that homeownership ties people to their towns and that moving to a new city requires paying often prohibitively expensive rents. There are a lot of conservative blogs taking on this question and doing some dubious interpretations of mostly good data.
I am teasing at the thread of "limits of local government in small towns" which seems to be leading somewhere but it's still not well supported. There's a lot of factors.
Watching: the Loading Ready Run 20th Anniversary Subathon is on until this Friday. Since I was mostly watching during American night I caught primarily their watchalong of old videos, which is cute but not exactly that novel. I do like LRR.
Making: More 3D printing, trying to get the hang of modelling off a photo to make a nozzle adapter for my vacuum cleaner. Also made a little stand for my temperature and humidity sensor so I can see it when I'm sitting down or standing up more easily.
Tumblr media
Playing: Beat Breath of the Wild finally. It was so long.
The final fight was kind of anticlimactic, between the assists you get from the divine beasts and all your power-ups I feel like I didn't have to puzzle it out as much as I did for some of the blight Ganon fights. I have kind of accepted that I just don't like the endings of most video games.
I did first go around and do the Champions' Ballad DLC quest because I stumbled into it, it's a nice set of little challenges plus some vignettes of the champions to help characterize them some more. I kind of wish you could walk around the world post-endgame and like, talk to some of the people you've met and see what they have to say. Eh.
Tools and Equipment: I have been storing my butter at room temperature the past few weeks, because it makes it much easier to spread. Modern butter is both very high fat and pasteurized so it won't go off for well over a week even if you just left it out, but the main concern is rancidity, which can happen quite quickly.
My Pro Tip is that you don't have to store the whole damn block. Euro butter is 250g blocks and I cut that into four ~60g cubes that I keep in a sealed plastic container in the cupboard one at a time. Just top it up as you go. I think American sticks are like 100g so you could cut it in half. South African butter usually comes in 500g so you'd have to cut that in like eighths.

Do you think any amateur could handle a drink like this?
Amour-propre Effervesce | Fizz, Floral, Fandom
Suletta wouldn’t drink, but Guel Jeturk would despite, imo, probably not enjoying the taste of alcohol. However, there’s a classic cocktail that's PERFECT for that -- the Ramos Gin Fizz, which I retemplated to include both an interesting purple sweetener and several layers of floral flavors including rose, with a glorious fluffy crown worthy of the Dilanza’s feather. The floral layers and variety of aromatics feels distinctly appropriate in G Witch, especially for a character like Guel.
However, the Ramos Gin Fizz isn’t for the Miorines of the cocktail world; it requires some careful prep, and takes a lot of upper arm strength and time shaking. So much like Guel had some... mechanical assistance imposed on him, we’re going to use a great hack established by famous cocktail bar Death & Co. We are going to use a whipped cream dispenser and force-nitro the cocktail to emulsify and foam up, without the hellish amount of shaking. However,  it’s important to follow these instructions carefully.
Note: Alternate creams/vegan foaming agents may not provide the desired effect, due to the importance of the proteins in both the cream and the egg white. If you want to make this a mocktail, you can use your favorite tea in place of gin and omit the creme de violette.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: A Whipped-Cream Dispenser and Nitrous Oxide cartridges(8grm). These don’t need to be industrial grade, iSi whippers -- As long as its not the style marketed as the “Easywhip” with the spout right on top, look below for an example of the shape it should be. These can be bought online, or at culinary supply stores, or your local tobacco/vape shop or adult novelty store. Please DO NOT POINT TOWARDS SELF OR OTHERS WHILE SCREWING IN THE GAS CANISTER, AND ALIGN THE THREADING ON THE CANISTER HOLDER CAREFULLY TO MINIMIZE RISK OF VENTING COLD GAS FROM AN IMPROPER PUNCTURE.
Step 1: Place serving glass in freezer.
Step 2. Place the following ingredients in your whipped cream dispenser.
Tumblr media
2 fl oz or 60ml Gin
0.5 fl oz or 15 ml Lemon Juice
0.5 fl oz or 15 ml Lime Juice
1 Dropper Bittermens Orange Cream Citrate*
.75ml Old Forester Hummingbird Rose & Citrus Bitters [or 2 dashes preferred floral bitters]
0.33 fl oz or 10ml Creme de Violette
1 fl oz or 30ml Blueberry Puree Syrup (I used Reál)
1 Egg White or 20ml liquid pasteurized egg white
0.75 fl oz or 22.5 ml Heavy Cream
1 drop Orange Blossom Water
1 drop Rosewater
*You can substitute 1 dash orange bitters[Angostura Orange preferable] and 3 drops vanilla extract if necessary or just omit
Have glass ready to receive.
Add a couple ice cubes and screw on cap tightly. Take 1 8 gram nitrous oxide charger. Common brands include Whip-Its, Bestwhip, and Leland. Insert charger into holder and screw in until you hear it vent into the dispenser.  Give it a few gentle shakes.
Add about half an ounce of chilled seltzer or soda water to the bottom of frozen glass.  Turn whip cream dispenser so spout is directly facing down and gently -- GENTLY -- press the lever to release. It should take about a minute or so to mostly fill the glass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After filling or mostly filling the glass, let sit for 2-4 minutes, ideally in freezer. Then make small divot  in foam and slowly pour in about .5-1 ounces or so of soda water. The foam should rise and not collapse if properly made and a straw inserted should stand up straight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, if you desire, as a little nod to Guel’s iconic look, use an atomizer or spray bottle to spritz Peychaud’s bitters on top of the foam. Serve with a spoon to enjoy all the foam.
Credit is due to Death & Co for originating the nitro-Gin-Fizz, David Wondrich’s Imbibe for all I could ever want or need to know about Fizzes, and this Cocktail Contessa Mocktail for the blueberry syrup inspiration.

Mead Making for the Blithe and Erratic: A Tutorial
For a One Gallon Batch:
Ingredients ($20USD+):
~3lbs (48oz, 1.5L) raw, unprocessed honey
~2.5quarts (2.4L) drinking water
1 packet of dry yeast
Supermarkets typically sell honey in 1lb/16oz containers or smaller. You can find 3lb containers if you order online. Make sure to buy raw, unprocessed honey. The pasteurization process may destroy the anti-bacterial enzymes that protect your batch from contamination during the initial stages of the brewing process.
If you trust your tap water enough to drink it you can use that, otherwise you can buy a gallon of whatever bottled spring water you prefer (just don't use mineral water or distilled water).
Wine yeast is preferred, but bread yeast works too; the resulting mead will have slightly lower alcohol content if made with bread yeast. Note: mead with higher alcohol content is more shelf-stable.
Equipment ($10USD+):
1 gallon carboy set (includes 1gal./3.8L glass brewing vessel plus drilled rubber stopper w/ airlock; sold as a unit for $15 on amazon)
brewing siphon (about $5+ on amazon; DO NOT get a petrol siphon; product must be made with food safe materials)
optional: 1gal. airtight drink dispenser with spigot** (see footnotes)
If you'd rather not pay for a glass carboy, you can instead use any empty plastic gallon-sized milk/juice jug you have lying around. You'll still need to get an airlock ($2+ on amazon). Punch a hole through the lid of your plastic jug to attach the airlock (borrow your neighbor's drill), then seal off any potential air leaks with food-safe cling wrap, Elmer's glue, or some other non-toxic sealant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steps:
Add honey* to the brewing vessel + enough lukewarm drinking water to fill it 85% full.
Let the honey fully dissolve in the water. Stir it, or screw on the lid and shake it.
Add 1 tsp yeast.
Kill the remainder of the yeast packet in half a cup of boiling water (you can nuke it in the microwave) and add that too. It gives the yeast some extra nutrients to help it ferment.**
Add a little more water until your fermenting vessel is 85-90%full.
Put in the rubber stopper/airlock.
Store the carboy somewhere room temperature. Ideal fermenting temperatures vary depending on the yeast. Wine-strength mead ages well at room temperature (64-75º F). Mead with a lower alcohol level should be aged at slightly cooler temperatures.
Swish the liquid in the carboy around once a day for the first 5 days, to make sure the honey really is fully dissolved and not settling to the bottom.
Wait for fermentation to finish (usually 3 or 4 weeks but it may take longer) -> when air bubbles stop coming out of the airlock, it's done fermenting (give it a couple weeks after it seems to have stopped to be extra sure).
Your mead will still be cloudy at this point. Remove any solids you might have put in the brew like fruit or spices (you can use a metal sieve, or cheese cloth, or a coffee filter, or whatever you have on hand to strain it), and seal off the container (be SURE fermentation has stopped, because you can EXPLODE your container if you seal it off when fermentation is still going.***
Wait for the mead to clear. All the yeast/particulates from the honey will slowly settle to the bottom of the container now that it has completed fermentation. This might take several weeks, or even several months**** depending on which honey you used.
Transfer the cleared mead into a new container(s), leaving behind any particulates and dead yeast that have settled to the bottom of the container.
At this point (3-4 months after you started the batch) you can go ahead and drink it, OR if it doesn't taste good yet, you can continue to let it age for up to 2 years in an airtight container***** in a temperature controlled root cellar/wine cellar/wine fridge.
Best served cold. Chill before drinking.
.
*If the honey is too thick to pour directly into the carboy, warm a half gallon of water in a large pot pot (no hotter than 95°F/35°C, which is the internal temperature of a beehive -> DO NOT boil) and let the honey dissolve in it before adding it to carboy.
**You can also buy commercial yeast nutrient. Or you can not add any nutrient and your mead will probably still come out fine, but it might take longer to ferment and require more aging to taste good.
***If your container is a conventional jar/jug, you will need to buy a brewing siphon for step 10. If, however, you use a jar/jug with an attached spigot, you will not need a siphon.
Tumblr media
The spigot will allow you to pour off the cleared mead, while leaving behind any unwanted residue that has settled to the bottom of the container. Do TEST the spigot first to make sure it doesn't leak.
****I know I said you could us a plastic jug, but once the fermentation is complete you should transfer it to a glass container(s) to let it clear. You can buy additives to make it clear faster by searching for "brewing clarifiers" online. Or you can just drink it cloudy if it passes your personal taste test.
*****If you want it to have an oaky flavor, you can age it in an oak barrel, or you can get the same effect by adding oak chips to the batch before sealing it off in a glass container.
.
I see a lot of brewing guides tell you that yeast nutrient is absolutely necessary. My mead has always tasted fine without it. YMMV.
You can buy additional equipment to measure exactly how alcoholic your mead is and exactly what the pH is in your carboy etc., etc., but I just don't see the point unless you're a professional brewer making mead with intent to sell.
Some mead guides will tell you that you need to buy special sanitizer and use special gloves and build a special cleanroom to avoid contamination. Contamination risk is higher if you're doing a fruit mead using a fruit that rots easily like raspberries. But if you stick to basics, risk is low since both raw honey and the alcohol it is converted into have anti-fungal/anti-bacterial properties. Just wash & rinse your hands and your equipment with regular dish soap.
Honestly, as long as you don't let any NYC sewer rats piss directly in your carboy and you should be fine.

i am sick and tired of much shit costs it’s fucking insane someone help us
in the mean time, i have started making A Lot more things at home that i would normally just buy. if you have the time i would recommend giving these a shot
Bread
bread is a big one, and as you improve quality and texture the price increases exponentially. even wonder bread, the thing everyone would say is Dirt Cheap is about 4.50$ per 20oz loaf where i live. most ‘artisan’ breads are 6$ or more
bread is supposed to be cheap and economical and it is when you make it at home. By Far the way to most easily incorporate this into your life is to invest in a bread machine. you can certainly bake a sandwich loaf without one, but it will obviously take more time. bread machines are dump and go.
i happen to have a zojuirushi bread machine, which works well for me but is $$$. there are certainly cheaper ones and bread machines are one of those things that end up in a thrift store or good will so check there as well. but even if you sprang for a new zojuriushi, it would pay for itself in about 80 loaves (assuming you hit a 0.90$ per loaf cost like i do)
i literally use one of the recipes that came with my machine. but there are loads out there. i would imagine most recipes are the same +/- 5% on about any ingredient i don’t think this matters
another path is the various ‘no-knead’ breads that are out there. these are similar in that you just put your stuff in a bowl, mix it up (maybe give it 2-3 folds over the course of 24-72 hours) and then you bake.
Mayonnaise
a stupid thing of mayonnaise costs SIX DOLLARS. eggs are still pretty expensive But for the same 6$ you can make about a gallon of mayonnaise.
i am sorry to have to recommend you own another tool, and you can make mayonnaise without a tool, but boy you should really just own an immersion blender to do this. they are not super expensive and will pay for themselves in no time
1 egg will make about 1 cup of mayonnaise comfortably. i say comfortably because you may be able to squeeze some more volume out of it it just depends.
mayonnaise is an emulsion of egg and oil, and sometimes the egg will hold more oil than others. but you can rely on about 1 cup everytime.
take make mayonnaise, take 1-2 eggs in a high sided container (deli containers from take out work best) and about a tsp of mustard per egg. (if you are like EWWW MUSTARD you can do it without however imo you will not taste it at this volume + it really helps mayo your mayonnaise.)
stick your immersion blender in there and combine everything and then slowly stream a neutral oil into your container. you are done when it looks like mayonnaise. it should be REALLY pale yellow. if it’s pretty yellow still you can probably add more oil.
SEASON IT with salt and pepper. you can also put other fun things in there if you want. herbs. lemon. garlic. go nuts
IF your mayo is broken (not together, oil at the top, etc.) take an egg yolk and another tsp of mustard, mix them in a separate high sided container. and then SLOWLY stream your broken mayonnaise into your new mix and it should come together
if raw eggs worries you, you can pasteurize your own eggs. but you need more equipment! you need a sous vide machine, or babysit a pot of water on the stove for about 90 minutes to keep it at 130F the entire time
but if you do that and then put those eggs in ice water, they are Pasteurized congrats.
Frozen Pizza
i love the convenience of frozen pizza but most of those suckers are like 8$ or more. you can take a pizza that you have made from scratch, bake it in the oven basically as normal, put it in a bag or wrap it in plastic or foil, put it in the freezer and now you have a frozen pizza
i don’t really do anything different for a pizza i eat for dinner or a pizza i intend for the freezer. i might under bake it slightly but most of the time i don’t. for best results put it on a wire rack to cool completely for an hour or so before you wrap it up.
i find that bags are too small for a pizza so i will wrap it in plastic. freeze your pizza flat.
i bake mine at 350F until it’s hot and the cheese is melty again. maybe 10 minutes just depends
that’s it for now if i think of anymore i will reblog
