Connaissez-vous la straight photography ? Jusqu’au 28/5/23, la fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson expose les clichés de Paul Strand, pionnier de ce style. Stieglitz écrit « les photos de Strand sont l’expression directe du temps présent ». Elles rompent avec le pictorialisme où la photo simule la peinture à grand renfort de manipulation au tirage afin de conquérir le statut d’Art. Strand privilégie l’instantanéité de la capture photo sans être dans l’instant décisif de Cartier-Bresson. Ses clichés sont purs, sans artifice d’éclairage ou de retraitement. Les objets du quotidien, les formes et les visages concentrent le regard. La lumière est celle du monde réel. Ses portraits de personnes sont intenses. Ses personnages sont sculpturaux. Strand inaugure le courant documentaire et le met au service d’un projet politique. Il rêve de faire le portrait global d’un village dont les habitants raconteraient leur histoire individuelle. Il publie « la France de profil », récit de sa promenade à la recherche des visages de la France rurale de l’après-guerre. Il culmine avec « Un paese », recueil de portraits de paysans et d’ouvriers de Luzzara, bastion italien de la lutte contre le fascisme mussolinien. My photo-based work is the result of an accretive process of collecting traces of exchange between people, objects, and space. Conceptually speaking, I find myself most curious about everyday moments that disclose a routine, compulsion, or idleness. Influences and inspiration? Some of the most influential artists in my practice include Lewis Boltz, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston. Their approach to capturing everyday moments, their selection of subject matter, and how they both use and at the same time question photography as a medium is very interesting to me.
