June 10th — The Golden Temple
On our first day in Kyoto, we headed to the famous Golden Temple and a smaller, operating temple called Daitokuji. Having been a fan of Mishima for some time, and having read his book centered on the Golden Temple, I had pretty high expectations for the temple’s beauty. Honestly, I felt a little disappointed. The golden temple is a very touristy location. I obviously can’t complain about that cause I’m a tourist. Still, the temple atmosphere of calm and serenity was not really present, so it was a little challenging to appreciate the temple’s beauty. Besides, there wasn’t much to do but take pictures and walk a little path around the temple. Again, the weather was pretty cloudy, so the scenery wasn’t the best. The dark green pond wasn’t very pretty either. I don’t wanna complain too much; it was still really cool to see the Golden Temple in person, and of course, expectations based on a book narrated by a delusional monk are bound to be disappointed. Still, I wish the Golden Temple wasn’t so touristy, like the second temple we visited, called Daitokuji. Daitokuji was quiet and serene, with beautiful zen gardens. We were led on a tour through the small main buildings and around the gardens, peeking into the former head priest’s residence. The guide was very helpful, speaking great English and explaining all sorts of Zen philosophies and proverbs. We were left to sit and gaze into the garden for a while. I was surprised to find the garden very comforting and beautiful, especially considering it was basically just a field of white gravel. We even came back for zen meditation, which I’ll write about in a separate post. Today, we also went to a second-hand store in Kyoto, which had amazing prices. For dinner, we went to a restaurant near the station and tore up some charcoal-grilled Wagyu beef and Sushi.
Academic Reflection
I’ve already written a little bit about the Temple of the Golden Pavillion, which was part of our readings for today. As I said, I found the real temple to be a little disappointing, but I still enjoyed the reading itself. Mishima’s writing is beautiful as always, and his portrait of Mizoguchi’s inner world is compelling. Reading the novel also helped me understand the life of Buddhist monks and more about their beliefs, which made both the Golden Temple and the Daitokuji more interesting.
The readings on the Zen garden also gave some critical context to our experience, along with some earlier readings on Zen in the tea ceremony. The readings even mentioned the specific temple we visited and explained the layout of the garden and it’s meaning (though our guide’s explanation was more interesting, considering the garden itself was right in front of us). Doing the readings, I thought I wouldn’t be able to appreciate a garden made of rocks, but after experiencing it in person, I understood how the gardens could aid priests in their meditation.

What Are The Best Suburbs For Home Buyers In Sydney?
For home buyers in Sydney, choosing a suburb can be a challenging task. Many things to consider when choosing a suburb include affordability, schools, and the availability of amenities. In this blog post, we will look at the best suburbs for home buyers in Sydney.
According to some reports, three key factors to consider when searching for a suburb to live in or invest in are
Live metric:
This metric considers factors such as proximity to the central business district, easy access to amenities and high-quality schools, community health scores, crime rates, housing affordability, and access to good health care.
Play metric:
The Play Metric measures the relative fun of a suburb by looking at the availability of restaurants, cultural experiences, sports, parks, gardens and other entertainment amenities.
 Work metric:
The work metric evaluates how easy it is to get to work, i.e., transport availability, as well as the quality of the local infrastructure and available job opportunities.
When choosing a suburb to live in, it is important to think about what is most important to you and use that as a basis for your decision.
The Best Suburbs To live In Sydney Are:
1. Sydney
Tumblr media
Sydney's central business district (CBD) is packed with cafes, restaurants and shops — some of which are in the iconic Queen Victoria Building — and can be referred to as the heartbeat of the city. One of its strongest features is its employment opportunities. It is highly ranked for public transport due to the number of railway stations in its radius, which makes access to trains extremely easy. However, being a CBD also has its downsides, and two of them are a lack of tree cover and a poor crime score.
2. McMahons Point
McMahon's takes the happiness of its residents very seriously. The suburb features spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge and has a great walkability score, with easy access to cafes, cultural activities, shopping and job hubs. However, if you need a train, you will have to walk to North Sydney or Waverton stations.
3. North Sydney
North Sydney is conveniently located on the train line and has excellent access to employment. The suburb also has a vibrant culture and retail scene, with Milsons Point and McMahons Point to its south, scoring moderate points for harbour views. North Sydney scores lower for crime than other areas of Sydney and has easy access to primary schools.
4. Shell Cove
Shell Cove is a seaside suburb located in Shellharbour. The suburb is adjacent to Bass Point and Killalea State Park and is situated south of Wollongong. It includes several facilities, such as parks, bush reserves, and golf courses; Shell Cove Public School & pre-schools; The Links Golf Course; Family Health Medical Centre; and Shellharbour Anglican College. A joint venture between Frasers Property(Australian top real estate company) and Shellharbour City Council created the newly developed Shell Cove Marina.
Tumblr media
The Waterfront at Shellharbour presents a stunning marina development offering world-class apartments in shell cove with an array of amenities, including a luxury dining precinct and tavern.
5. Coogee
Coogee is Sydney’s most sought-after coastal suburb. It is known for its crystal clear waters, stunning coastline, parks and aquatic reserves. Coogee offers family-friendly sand beaches and lively nightlife since the Famous Coogee Pavillion was recently renovated.
6. Bondi
Tumblr media
Bondi Junction is the most famous and quintessential beach. It has excellent access to public transportation and a huge shopping centre with many stores, making it a convenient commute to the city. Located near the Randwick races, Bondi Junction is also close to several schools, including private ones. However, parking can be an issue, as well as high real estate prices.
Sydney has many affordable suburbs with amenities, but the real estate market can be competitive. Therefore, it is important to choose wisely when purchasing a property.

Welcome to Cambodia with Cambodia Travel Guides, below can help you plan your trip.
Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton
Cambodia is at the frontier of tourism. It has a rich culture dating back many centuries when the Angkor Civilization was the region’s most developed. The 9th century Angkorian temples have intrigued archaeologists and fascinated tourists since being rediscovered in 1860. They remain one of the world’s great ancient wonders and the jewel of them all, Angkor Wat, is the world’s largest religious monument. The country has others attractions – from unspoiled beaches, fascinating markets, Mekong river cruises, beautiful natural areas, the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and isolated hill-tribe groups. There are many potential ecotourism attractions in rainforests, riverine and wetland ecosystems. These will become more accessible as tourism infrastructure develops. The capital, Phnom Penh, is the gateway for tourists. There are several attractions here like the Royal Palace/Silver Pagoda, other temples like Wat Phnom, Mekong river cruises and the National Museum. The city has lively restaurants, bars and exciting market shopping. Visitors to Angkor usually fly to Siem Reap or take a boat across southeast Asia’s largest fresh water lake, Tonle Sap.
To truly experience Cambodia, you need to spend a few weeks traveling around. Natural attractions range from the northeastern jungles, to the lovely beaches of Sihanoukville, and the mighty rivers that cut across the country. Our staff and guides are enthusiastic about their country of residence and are more than happy to help you plan a journey perfectly suited to your needs. Whether you seek luxury travel, an adventurous journey, or a classic tour of Cambodia’s main sites Cambodia knows the best program for your holiday. When to go in Cambodia? The winter months (October to February) are the best time to travel to Cambodia as the air is cool and the skies are clear. However, the dust at this time of year can be irritating and the crowds at the Angkor temples are at their highest numbers. March to May sees hotter temperatures and dry skies, and the heat continues in to June through August when the monsoon season starts. The rains, however, do not usually cause a major problem for travelers as they tend to be short- but hard- afternoon showers.
Where to stay in Siem Reap?
Whatever your budget and whatever your accommodation needs, Siem Reap has something to suit your tastes. With over hundreds of hotels and guesthouses to choose from, selecting accommodation can seem like a daunting task. However, our team in Siem Reap is constantly researching and visiting hotels, both old and new, to stay up to date on the best options in town and to find the perfect hotel for you. Below is a selection of our recommended hotels for each category which we hope will make your decision easier.
The intricate reliefs carving of red colored sandstone Banteay Srei temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Boutique
A hidden gem in Siem Reap is Viroth’s, a small hotel with just seven rooms tucked on a quiet side street near the heart of the city. Trendy, relaxing, and intimate, Viroth’s made the Conde Nast Hot List in 2008. The new and intimate Villa Kiara is tucked away in a typical Cambodian village setting and boasts with its tranquil, beautiful garden with pool. The 16 rooms come in a minimalist, trendy style where local materials add comfort and a twist – a haven of relaxation! The classy Heritage Suites Hotel is a somewhat different.
Mid Range
An exoticism favorite, the Tara Angkor is a chic modern hotel with quality rooms, welcoming staff, and a great location near the Temples of Angkor. Equally recommendable, Borei Angkor Resort & Spa comes in a classic Cambodian style of true elegance and comfort.
Splurge
For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, there is no doubt that Amansara is the place to stay. Housed in the grounds of a former royal palace and featuring top of the line service and facilities, the Amansara is redefining the face of luxury in Cambodia. La Residence D’Angkor is an ideal base for exploring the temples, with leafy green gardens, warm hospitality and luxurious rooms. Likewise, the Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa is graceful colonial building offering a refined atmosphere in the heart of Siem Reap. A bit trendier, the Hotel de la Paix features stunning Art Deco rooms accented by local.
Shopping and Dining
Artisan’s D’Angkor is a unique organization working to preserve traditional Khmer arts and crafts. They have established two centers in Siem Reap. The location in town features a wood and stone carving workshop where magnificent sculptures are produced, while the silk centre is a bit further afield. At the Angkor Silk Farm, you can see the entire process of silk creation: from the breeding of the silk worms, to the dyeing andweaving of the material.
Where to stay in Phnom Penh?
Cambodia’s Royal Palace stands majestically in the city centre just off the riverfront area. Several buildings are open to visitors including the ‘Silver Pagoda’ whose floor is lined with solid silver tiles. Nearby, the National Museum is a fabulous old building filled with art and artifacts dating back to the pre-Angkorian era.For a look in to the country’s tragic recent history, a tour of Tuol Sleng Prison (S-21) and the Killing Fields is a sobering reminder of the evils of the Khmer Rouge regime. Although not a joyful tour, visiting these monuments unlocks keys to understanding the development of this still developing country.
Boutique
Phnom Penh offers an array of small boutique hotels. Favorites include Villa Langka, The Pavillion and River 108 each of which offers tastefully decorated rooms, modern amenities, and reasonable prices. The Kabiki is the perfect accommodation for families that comes with a swimming pool in a spacious garden and plenty of entertainment for the children. In the sometimes bustling capital, these hotels are peaceful retreats and havens of calm. Classy Amanjaya and the minimalist and carbon-neutral The Quay are trendy hotels located right on the riverfront, in the heart of the city. This new wave of chic boutique hotels promises to continue as tourists continue to flock to Cambodia.
Luxury
The Raffles Hotel Le Royal has been the luxury hotel of choice in Phnom Penh for decades, and has housed statesmen and legends in its colonial halls. The Sofitel hotel group will be opening another 5 star property in 2010 that is sure to be added to our luxe list.
Shopping and Dining
Phnom Penh is a shoppers’ paradise with everything from fake Louis Vitton handbags to fine silk household items. The crowded Russian Market is the place to test out your bargaining skills, while the art-deco Central Market features more local products mixed in with the souvenirs. For fine home wares and clothes, the shops on Street 240 are filled with luxurious goods and Street 178 is filled with art galleries selling traditional and modern pieces created by Khmer artists.
Where to see and stay at Beaches
Sihanoukville town sits in the center of a small peninsula that juts into the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Several beaches of fine pearl-white sand line the shore around the peninsula, all easily accessible from the town, each separated from the other as much by character as the rocky headlands between. The main beaches are lined with thatch roofed seafood shacks and bars offering cold drinks, umbrellas and chairs, BBQ, evening parties and water sports… (more)
What to see in Sihanouk?
Cambodia’s Premier Beach Town Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s premier beach town, sporting miles of white sand beaches, some excellent seafood, a heady party scene, and several nearby tropical islands. The town sits on a peninsula jutting into the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Beaches of fine pearl-white sand line the shore around the peninsula, each offering its own unique character, from the busy and popular.
Where to eat Sihanouk?
The main beaches are lined with thatch roofed seafood shacks and bars offering cold drinks, umbrellas and chairs, BBQ and more.Sihanoukville is also a town that knows how to party and there’s no shortage of nightspots and beach parties late into the night. Sihanoukville is a place to unwind by the beach, enjoy the fresh seafood, party at the bars and happenings, go boating or scuba diving or use as a jumping off point to the islands.
Shopping and Dining
Sihanoukville is putting on something of a real shopping scene these days. Several shops and souvenir stalls line the road to Serendipity Beach – souvenirs, clothing, crafts, music, NGO shops and more – some places staying open late into the evening. On the more practical side, convenience stores dot the area and there are a couple of small supermarkets downtown, Of special note: the Otres Market – a Saturday market gathering of local crafts and food vendors (in the spirit of the Saturday beach markets of Goa) begins its second year running, located in Otres Village, open Saturday 4PM-late.
Cambodia FAQs
Airlines
Cambodia Angkor Air is the only airline currently operating domestic flights in Cambodia. This airline uses French-Italian ATR turboprop planes (Avions de Transports Régionaux), a type of plane well suited for the local conditions, airports and distances. The configuration is 70-seats (ATR 72) in rows of 4 seats with a middle aisle. Entry-exit is at the back of the plane. Standard one-class configuration. Cambodia Angkor Air is owned by Vietnam Airlines and Cambodia and also operates some international flights with plans for expansion within the region.
Clothing
Comfortable lightweight clothing in natural fabrics such as cotton is most suitable for traveling in Cambodia. The dress code is fairly casual as in most parts of the tropics but it is advisable to cover arms and legs in the evenings against biting insects. A lightweight raincoat and umbrella are a good idea in the rainy season and the umbrella can also offer useful shadefrom the sun.
Electricity
Cambodia uses 220V, and a mixture of flat 2-pin, round 2-pin or 3 pin plugs. It is recommended to bring a universal plug adaptor. Power outages happen occasionally but most hotels have their own generator.
Entertainment
Western style entertainment is easy to find in Cambodia and Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have a wealth of good restaurants and a large number of bars and some nightclubs. In the rest of the country, entertainment is still emerging, but some tourist-oriented restaurants and bars can be found in any place in Cambodia.
Food
As in many Asian countries, the staple food of the Cambodian diet is rice. This is usually served with dried, salted fish, chicken, beef or pork. Fish is often fresh from Tonle Sap Lake and is eaten with a spicy peanut sauce called tuk trey. Popular dishes include sam chruk, a roll of sticky rice stuffed with soya bean and chopped pork and amok, a soup of boneless fish with coconut and spices. In Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, Western food is widely available.
Health
No vaccinations are required except for yellow fever if you are coming from an area where the disease is present. However visitors should be inoculated against typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A & B, tetanus and polio. Malaria is present in Cambodia and it is advisable to take precautions especially if traveling off the beaten.
Hours Of Business
Offices are usually open from Monday to Friday from 07:30 or 08:00 until 17:00 and often close for lunch between 12:00 and 14:00. Shops open early and close any time between 18:00 and 22:00. Most shops are open 7 days a week.
Insurance
Medical facilities are rather limited in Cambodia and it is essential to take out a good medical insurance policy before traveling. Such an insurance should absolutely cover the cost of an evacuation flight out of Cambodia (most of the time to Bangkok or Singapore) which is sometimes necessary either on a regular flight or on a special flight. For adventure tours such as cycling proof of purchase of a travel insurance policy will be required. In Siem Reap the Royal Angkor International Hospital (affiliated with the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center) has been fully operational since November 2007.
Interest
Internet access is widely available in every major city in Cambodia. In Phnom Penh and Siem Reap there are many Internet cafes from which to stay in contact with your home. In outlying regions, many hotels provide Internet access.
Language
Cambodia’s national language is called Khmer and unlike the other languages of the region is not a tonal language. The written script originated in southern India. As in other former French colonies the educated older generation often speaks very good French while the younger generation prefers English. Outside the major centers of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap most people speak only Khmer.
Money
The currency of Cambodia is called the riel. There is however no need to change your currency into riels as is common with most Asian countries, US dollars are accepted in many places and are used to pay for airline tickets, airport taxes, visa fees, hotel and restaurant bills. Please note that ripped, torn, or old bills will not be accepted. ATM machines, which distribute US dollars, are found throughout Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Banks are open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 15:00 and Saturday morning until 12:00. In the major cities there are exchange bureaus and most hotels will change US dollars although for other currencies it is
Photography
Normal print films are available in Cambodia but professional quality films (like slide films) are very difficult to find and it is better to bring your own. In cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, digital photos can easily be downloaded and loaded onto a CD-ROM in case you run out of memory.
Religion
Buddhism is the dominant religion in Cambodia with 90-95% of the population being Buddhist. Islam is practiced by a small percentage of the population, mainly the Cham people residing near the Vietnam border, and Christianity and Hinduism are the religions of less than 1% of the Cambodian people.

Safety
Despite its turbulent history, Cambodia is a safe country to visit. All tourist areas have been cleared of landmines and UXOs with only a small portion remaining in the very remote areas. As a global rule, never leave your belongings unattended and always maintain eye contact or a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags.
Shopping
Cambodian handicrafts include silks, woodcarvings, rattan weavings, handmade papers and the krama , the traditional Cambodian scarf. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap’s local markets are the best places for shopping and there are also dozens of charity-run shops throughout the country where you can shop for a cause. Ask your guide for more information.
Telephone
If you have worldwide coverage, you can bring your own mobile phone and use it to make domestic or international calls. Check with your mobile phone provider for the costs before using it abroad – it may be expensive. Internet cafes offer the best deals with programs such as Skype providing cheap, decent quality overseas calls.
Time
Cambodia is GMT 7 and does not operate daylight-saving system.
Tipping
Tipping for good service is not expected but is always appreciated in a country where the average annual income is quite low compared to Europe for example. It is customary to tip tour guides and drivers at the end of a tour. Hotel and station porters should also be tipped. Do not let guide talk you into tipping more than you plan to. It is totally up to you who you tip, when and how much.
Travelers checks
Banks such as ANZ Bank and ACLEDA will change your Travelers Checks for US Dollars but a commission applies (2% to 5%). Very few shops, hotels or restaurants accept Travelers Checks. NOTE: Travelers Checks can be difficult to change outside of major cities.
Visas
Most visitors to Cambodia require a visa to enter the Electronic Visas are now available through the Ministry’s website with a processing time of 3 days. A scanned copy of the passport and 25USD paid by credit card will issue an emailed visa which the traveler must print and bring with them. Most border crossings accept e-visas, however it is recommended to double check with the government or Exotissimo first.
Weather
Cambodia has two distinctive seasons: Rainy from June to October and dry from November to May. Traveling during the rainy season has its benefits as the temple moats in Siem Reap are full, making for great photos. The rains are usually in the afternoon and last 2-3
Water
It is not advisable to drink tap water but bottled mineral water is safe and available everywhere. All hotels provide a complimentary bottle of local mineral water per person in the room. Ice cubes in drinks is generally OK in good standard hotels and restaurants but it is best to avoid it on street stalls or in country areas. Some minor stomach problems are always possible when travelling in exotic countries. Bring a supply of your usual antidiarrhoea medicine.

Beylerbeyi Palace: Summer Residence of the Sultans
Tumblr media
Beylerbeyi Palace where is located at the Anatolian side of Istanbul constructed during the 1860s to be the summer residence of the Ottoman Sultans. As you know Istanbul is the city of palaces and historical monuments built throughout the long-standing history of the multi-continent city. Beylerbeyi neighborhood is connected and very close to the Uskudar district and the name of the palace comes from the Beylerbeyi. Deposed Sultan Abdulhamid II also stayed in the Beylerbeyi Palace from 1912 to his death in 1918. The palace may not be a very old building but it held a very important part of late Ottoman history.
Tumblr media
Beylerbeyi Palace has influential architecture (Source).
History of Beylerbeyi Palace
Beylerbeyi Palace was built by the order of the Sultan Abdulaziz (1830-1876) between 1861 and 1865. It was designed to be the summer residence of the Ottoman Sultans and home of some state organizations.  It is still active and used for private and government organizations during the whole year. There is an interesting story occurred in Beylerbeyi Palace. Empress Eugénie of France came to the Beylerbeyi Palace while her way to open the Suez Canal in 1869. During her visitation, she dares to fall into the arms of the Sultan Abdulaziz. This one was a very graceful thing to do the Ottoman Sultans. Empress was even slapped by the mother of the Sultan Abdulaziz, Sultan Pertevniyal. Of course, there may be exaggeration about his story :) Empress loved the Beylerbeyi Palace and after returning to France she ordered to make a copy of the guest rooms windows to the Tuileries Palace in Paris. The other famous visitors of the Beylerbeyi Palace were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The main hall of the Beylerbeyi Palace (Source). Design and Architecture Palace designed by the Sarkis Balyan in the Second Empire style which used for a more plain style than the Dolmabahce and Kucuksu Palaces. The best way to see the design and architecture of the palace is to take a look from the Bosphorus. From a little far away, maybe from the European, you will see all the details of the design and architecture. There are two bathing pavilions in the palace. One of them is for the men (selamlık) and the other one is for the women (harem). The most fascinating room of the palace is the reception or main hall where you can see from the image above. Even there is a fountain and running water in this room. Ottomans used these fountains and running waters to give a cooling effect and pleasant sound for the dwellers of the palace. You will also see the Egyptian reed matting is used to insulation, crystal chandeliers, French Baccarat and the famous Hereke carpets.
