On the two cups and their metaphor in the Pei Shou Yi and Yu Zhen Xuan couple.

You know, I might be reaching. But here’s what the metaphor and symbolism of those two cups extend to, for me:

They might just be a metaphor for their ways of processing and handling their emotions.

A cup as an artisan-created vessel to hold shapeless liquid that might be their inner lives, their emotions and raw feelings. A cup as a tool - like a sytematic (cognitive) approach - to hold this inherently shapeless matter and contain it in safe and certain confines, a cup that has a handle, for you to grip it and direct it to your mouth, to drink from it, and digest it.

The surface that comes into contact with Pei Shou Yi’s mouth has a crack, there’s something broken, or at least more difficult to use with that damaged intermediate piece that connects cup and mouth, feelings and the self, and their bringing the two together.

Pei Shou Yi gives Zhen Xuan the grey cup. Back when Zhen Xuan has alll the raw feelings, but no way to handle them, digest them, communicate them other than violence.

In tutoring and giving his life tracks to run in, Pei Shou Yi hands him the cup, tools to put a handle on his emotions, contain and digest them.

There’s also the distinctive sameness of those cups.

They are of the same design, made up of the same stuff so to say, as I think Pei Shou Yi recognizes the similarities in their challenges with processing and handling emotions, even if they are not exactly alike.

Pei Shou Yi’s affective disoder and alleged alexithymia, the difficulty in identifying and naming emotions, and Zhen Xuan’s Autism Spectrum disorder, both make them in need of a systematic approach to proccessing their inner workings inside the challenges of this society, maybe more than for neurotypical persons.

There may be possible traumata that have not been mentioned in the show contributing to their personalities as well, but this alone is a unifying trait, their challenge in living their emotions.

They both need that tool to learn to handle themselves in a way that allows them to heal from the wounds this rigid world has inflicted on them, to arrive at living life in a way they can benefit from and enoy and still be themselves.

Another thing that this metaphor shows us:

Pei Shou Yi’s cup has been in constant use.

He may say he has no feelings, may tell Zhen Xuan there’s nothing there, and we don’t know exactly how much he believes that himself - there’s hints in the show that he actually does feel for Zhen Xuan all this time- but the show runners decided to show us him, unable to let go of that cup that links him to their shared history. They even show us Pei Shou Yi haunted, thinking of Zhen Xuan with that absent minded look on his face, holding that cup.

Him having something in that cup, trying and drinking from it, using it.

And then in that proposal scene at the bar, Pei Shou Yi hands Zhen Xuan his own brown cup to drink from.

And if that isn’t ever the most powerful and omptimistic and healing thing for his own arc, to allow Zhen Xuan acces to his emotions, held in a cracked vessel that you have to drink from with care as they may be.

The outro scenes have those two cups together on a table next to each other, one blueish grey, one brown with a crack, clearly in use. Together.

I am in love with this.

Review of We Best Love: Fighting Mr 2nd

(Eh - it’s more of a half-tired ramble but we move)

The angst and stakes in this season were raised much much more than last season. There were so many more moments that tugged at my heart strings and left me in a weeping mess.

However, everything was so sudden. They went from one extremity of fighting until almost having hate sex (which wouldn’t really be hate sex but more of a ‘I miss you’ and ‘how could you hurt me’ kind of sex) to being steadfastly in love.

What I love seeing in a relationship is the build up with certain defining moments. In season 1 this involved slowly seeing the hate and enmity Shu Yi feels for Shi De turn in to friendship to then switching to attraction. We get to see their defining moments in front of our eyes: from the first time Shu Yi tells Shi De they’re friends, to the confession scenes and more. (That bridge scene is UNBEATEN to this day)

In season 2 it felt as though we were missing important movements in their relationship. It was as though from the moment they got back together - that was it. It was no longer important to show defining moments in their relationship after that, as though the audience should be satisfied that they’re back together now and that’s all we need. I needed to see their first kiss after getting back together, or Gao Shi De moving in with Zhou Shu Yi, or their first date together etc etc. In my opinion, it seemed as though the writers wanted them to get back together but weren’t 100% sure how to portray their relationship after that when they had so much else to do in the season (ie Pei Shou Yi and Zhen Xuan).

Speaking of Pei Shou Yi and Zhen Xuan - wtf? Shou Yi suddenly decides to accept Zhen Xuan as a part of his life after Zhen Xuan was ready to leave? But we don’t get to see any explanation or inferences as to Pei Shou Yi’s real thoughts. Why was he so keen on pushing Zhen Xuan away but then decide to hold on? Does Shou Yi not believe Zhen Xuan’s love is obsession anymore? Obviously this man is in love with Zhen Xuan in his own way, but where does their relationship stand? (I’m not sure but apparently we have another season for them? I’ve been too exhausted to keep up to date with WBL news. Hopefully this will all get answered in the coming season if that is the case)

The couple that had the best development and glo up since Season 1 were Bing Wei and Zhe Yu. They stole every scene they were in - particularly Zhe Yu and his prickly but lovable personality. Their love for each other was so subtle yet so strong. They bickered like anything and Zhe Yu loved putting Bing Wei on his toes, but that was their love and it was so meaningful and pure. I love them a lot. (And their matching suits? Omg they’re SO in love it’s ridiculous)

Season 1 of WBL was always going to be hard to beat, because for me that was the type of season I had needed. I would have been content with just season 1 and the season ending there. I think season 1 showed the best version of Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi De’s relationship. This meant that season 2 Shi De and Shu Yi were unable to beat this image of their season 1 relationship, even after they got together.

I did enjoy their soft moments and their sweetness, but the energy of their relationship felt altogether different and disjointed. It didn’t work for me as well as it did in first season.

These are all just my opinions. I have loved this show beyond anything. So for me not liking season 2 as much as I wanted to hurts me a lot more than you can imagine. Maybe this is emotional and mental exhaustion that has left me unable to enjoy the second season as much, but even so I think my opinions are very valid, even if they are uncommon.

Gao Shi De x Zhou Shu Yi - WBL Boys' vacation

All the boys gathered around the fire and started talking and telling stories about their school time and when they met each other. They were all paired up and each pair had a blanket over their legs. Not that it was too cold but because it felt more comfortable.

-Maybe we should go too. - He said. - Don't want you to get sick. - He added. Shu Yi nodded smiling. - Okay we're going too. You guys are still staying? - Shi De asked turning to Bing Wei and Zhe Yu.

- Yeah, think we're going to watch the stars for a bit. - Zhe Yu said.

They all smiled and said good night to each other.

Shi De and Shu Yi entered the tent and Shi De closed it.

- Maybe we should go too. - He said. - Don't want you to get sick. - He added. Shu Yi nodded smiling. - Okay we're going too. You guys are still staying? - Shi De asked turning to Bing Wei and Zhe Yu.ext to him after confirming the tent was all closed up and he turned off the light in their tent. He laid behind Shu Yi, hugging him and fitting his legs perfectly behind Shu Yi's legs too.

- Do you feel warmer now? - He whispered against the back of Shu Yi's neck.

- Yeah. - Shu Yi whispered back and snuggled back, even more, against Shi De's body.

- Don't shake too much against me, babe. - Shi De said and softly kissed the back of his neck. Shu Yi chuckled.

- Why? - He asked.

- You know why. - Shi De said, also chuckling.

Shu Yi rubbed his butt against Shi De's crotch, teasing him. Shi De took a deep breath and Shu Yi smiled.

- Zhou Shu Yi, you're teasing. - Shi De said and slid his hand to Shu Yi's crotch.

WBL thoughts

on Pei Shou yi and his affective disorder and relationship with Yu Zhen Xuan.

Late, I know, but maybe someone’s still interested to share some musings... Wrote this in the end notes to their fic moments I am working on to arrange my headcanon, throwing it ou there too, i case someone wants to read or interact <3

Trying to put myself in their headspaces. From my research, I can't really pinpoint Pei Shou Yi's condition or diagnosis, so the headcanon that I operate from for him is something like this: Affective disorder seems to mean mood disorders, which are depression and bipolar disorder and the variants of them.

What Shou Yi describes as not being able to feel or react emotionally, sounds more like alexithymia, which is defined as a trait that can accompany various personality disorders.

It is not so much not having feelings as it means having trouble identifing feelings or lacking the words to describe them. Maybe, in effect, this might be similar to 'not being able to feel', when your mind can't put a meaning or concept or name to the emotional arousal you might be experiencing, cannot form a link between the rational concepts you've learned and the things happening in your body and mind.

Theres also the term 'disaffected' that was coined for a psychoanalytical approach to alexithymia. Where with the studies on alexithymia, causes are often looked for in brain chemistry and the inablity to process emotions from a biochemical point of view, the term disaffectation indicates that the condition could result from an experienced overload of emotion not congruent with your integrity or identity, so feeling as a whole is eliminated to resolve that conflict, as I understood it.

It would be so interesting to know more about what made Pei Shou Yi the way he is, his history, if he grew up with it, if he has suffered trauma, neglect, if he ever had theraphy or treatment, if he studied psychological topics as a mechanism to cope, and how that career path as a doctor, whatever his exact qualifications are, helped or maybe blocked him from healing, by not allowing himself to be more than a diagnosis that seemed to fit.

In any case, the affective disorder mentioned, it might be a chronic form of depression, where apathy or anhedonia can play a role, like dysthymia, with the added self?-diagnosis of alexithymia. How much of it is 'real' and how much of it might be a protective mechanism is hard to tell, especially since Pei Shoui Yi has armed himself with the knowledge and terminology of psychology, even if it is not clear how much of an authority in those fields he, or the show's writers for that matter, really are. At times, I think his claim to feel nothing  is something he exaggerates to push Zhen Xuan away.

Yes, sooo much to explore there.

Especially when he meets that boy full of feral feelings and challenges communicating and processing those as well.

As Yu Zhen Xuan is portrayed as having Autistic Spectrum Disorder, some of their challenges actually might overlap. Alexithymia can occur in people with ASD too, although I think Zhen Xuan might not be a candidate for that. He did struggle not as much with identifying, but maybe with communicating/expressing his feelings, all that pain he didn't know where to turn to, that Pei Shou Yi of all was the first to address. The irony and sense that makes, right?

To an extent I feel like Pei Shou Yi saw and needed Yu Zhen Xuan as a mirror that completes the parts he can't see in himself, but is similar enough to allow a second look, a sense of solidarity and sameness.

A lot of imagery in the show supports that, the two same cups for example.

I also just read an interesting article, that suggests people on the autism spectrum might struggle with the cognitive part of empathy more, like reading faces and body language and deducting feelings from there, and the affective empathy part might actually be more pronouncedly felt by some, a direct instinctual picking up and feeling along others' emotions, which might be overwhelming in its intensity.

Zhen Xuan seems to brim with raw feelings and empathy when he's with Shou Yi, so they might actually complement each other there, Zhen Xuan might pick up on something from Shou Yi, that Shou Yi himself can't really name and process or completely connect to, and Shou Yi might learn to use the mirror that Zhen Xuan can provide like this, to get more in touch with himself.

It's what Zhen Xun keeps doing for Pei Shou Yi now, that they are not any longer in a dependent student/tutor relationship, with a hierarchial imbalance, that Shou Yi rightfully ended when it threatened to become more than what was needed by Zhen Xuan back then to benefit his growth.

Now that Zhen Xuan has found his footing, has climbed up those steps to an eye level equality in partnership with Shou Yi, more than he could when he was just too young, now may be the time where they can turn their focus on Shou Yi's healing as well.

And I think that after they met again, that is what Zhen Xuan does for Shou Yi, and what gets through to him after all. It's the challenging of that rigid shield of a self-diagnosis he may exaggerate to get his way, the challenging of a way of life that Pei Shou Yi has accepted for himself mostly, but through Zhen Xuan's influence, we do see cracks in that self image.

And I think he does feel things, and it is hinted at in their special ep, and through the profile-musings shown in their episode 7, that he can’t hide his feelings any longer, and that he has to stop lying to himself.

He does feel something, when he’s with Zhen Xuan, not only annoyance,  does feel something in that moment when Zhen Xuan kissed him, he just doesn’t feel he deserves to respond to Zhen Xun based on that, because Zhen Xuan deserves better in his eyes, and him pushing Zhen Xuan away is always out of the ulterior motive to protect Zhen Xuan fom him, so everything he told Zhen Xuan about his not being able to feel anything... like Zhen Xuan calles him out on it right at the beginning for lying - i don’t think we can take it all at face value, or an absolute diagosis.

The actors, and their spotify podcast have hinted at similar things, so in conclusion, I believe - and the show made that the conclusion of his arc, too, albeit sometimes very subtly - Pei Shou Yi does feel for Yu Zhen Xuan, has for a long time, it is a deep care and interest in his well being, so much that he takes himself out of the eqaution when he thinks his involvement is not beneficial to Zhen Xuan, or what he deserves, with the limitations of Shou Yi’s condition.

That’s why his actions and words so often contradict himself, which Zhen Xuan picks up on, too, holding on and hoping.
