Henryk Górecki - III Symfonia op. 36 “Symfonia pieśni żałosnych”
Polish national radio symphony orchestra, Krzysztof Penderecki (conductor), Beth Gibbons (soprano)
OTD in Music History: Celebrated composer and conductor Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki (1933 - 2020) is born in Poland.
Penderecki's best known works include his "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima" (1960), his "Saint Luke Passion" (1966), his "Symphony No. 3" (1980), and the "Polish Requiem" (1984, rev. 1993, further rev. 2005). Penderecki's extensive oeuvre also includes four operas, eight symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral settings (mainly of religious texts), and a wide array of chamber and instrumental works.
Although Penderecki passed away two years ago, his official state funeral just occurred earlier this year due to delays created by COVID-19 restrictions. His cream-colored alabaster urn was placed among the final remains of some of Poland's greatest authors and scientists at the National Pantheon at Krakow’s St. Peter and Paul Church, following a Requiem Mass during which his own music was performed.
