OTD in Music History: Celebrated composer and conductor Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki (1933 - 2020) is born in Poland. Penderecki's best known works include his "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima" (1960), his "Saint Luke Passion" (1966), his "Symphony No. 3" (1980), and the "Polish Requiem" (1984, rev. 1993, further rev. 2005). Penderecki's extensive oeuvre also includes four operas, eight symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral settings (mainly of religious texts), and a wide array of chamber and instrumental works. Although Penderecki passed away two years ago, his official state funeral just occurred earlier this year due to delays created by COVID-19 restrictions. His cream-colored alabaster urn was placed among the final remains of some of Poland's greatest authors and scientists at the National Pantheon at Krakow’s St. Peter and Paul Church, following a Requiem Mass during which his own music was performed. PICTURED: A candid photograph of the middle-aged Penderecki which he has signed, also scrawling a short autograph musical quotation above his name.

Get your teeth rattled by a modern classical composer with a well manicured beard and elbow patches on their blazer.

Opus 961, Violist Noemi Chemali’s Auspicious Debut: New Music Activism From Emerging Lebanese Composers
There are many ways to debut on the world stage and there are many ways to represent political activism. Violist Noemi Chemali has chosen, as her important first impression in her recorded debut, a selection of music from young composers whose heritage includes political oppression. The albums profits are promised to MSF, also known as Doctors Without Borders. These works are not directly…
