Rhett was holding the haphazardly taped up envelope in his hand like it was a holy relic. He rushed inside throwing his backpack on the floor as he hurried to the kitchen and grabbed the first knife that caught his eye. With a trembling hand he slowly cut the envelope open and tilted it to slide out the contents. A worn wallet dropped on the counter. Rhett’s fingers softly brushed the soft leather. His breath caught and he had to swallow down a sob.

When he’d gotten the message, he’d ignored it. Lots of peoples sent him messages on Instagram. Sometimes he read them; most often than not, he didn’t have the time. Thankfully, this person had been persistent and when Rhett got the fifth message he actually read it.

I bought an old wallet from a thrift shop. It had a piece of paper inside. I think it might be your blood oath.

Rhett had read the message, sighed and smiled a little. They both got messages like this once in a while. Enthusiastic fans who thought some old paper might be the long gone blood oath. People had even faked oaths to show them. Rhett didn’t think they actually meant any harm; they just wanted to be noticed. Link took it harder than Rhett did. Decades had passed and Link still felt bad about losing his wallet and the only remaining oath with it.

But then Rhett had seen the pictures. It was a timeworn piece of paper; yellowed with writing that was almost entirely worn off. The words were barely legible but Rhett didn’t need to read them to know he was looking at the real deal. The little brown stains at the bottom of the paper told him everything he needed to know.  

The finder of the wallet was more than happy to send it to Rhett. He wouldn’t even accept his pleas to pay a finder’s fee or at least reimburse him for the postage.

It’s yours. It belongs to you guys. Knowing it’s going home is enough for me.

Rhett cried that night. He cried for the little boys standing in a field all those years ago, holding a dirty shard of glass, amping each other up for the cut. He cried for two best friends in a small town with big dreams. He cried for the years after; school, girlfriends, college, wives, children, mind-numbing jobs, the Thursday nights, the commercials, the music, the videos, the cross-country move, the company, the team they build, their own little empire. He cried for a dream realized and for the friendship that had carried through all through their lives. 

Rhett saw the little boys with bleeding palms in his mind as if it had happened yesterday and more than anything, he wanted to go back in time, gather them in his arms and tell them their dreams eventually came true.

The episode was the old silly game show format they hadn’t done in ages. Link had been confused about the change in schedule but it had been explained to him with plausible lies and half-truths. 

Rhett was nervous. He laughed too loud and messed up his lines too many times. Link whispered his concern during a break and Rhett waved him off blaming a sleepless night. Link continued to look at him with worry threaded in his eyebrows but the filming went on.

Rhett’s palms were sweating as they got to the last round. Link had to get this question right to win the prize. Rhett gave all the hints he could and to his infinite relief Link actually got the point that brought him victory.

“Here,” Rhett squeaked as he thrust the mystery box into Link’s hands. Link frowned a little.

“I thought I can choose between this and the dollar?” he said with a smirk at the camera.

“You’ll want this,” Rhett just said. He couldn’t sit still anymore. His leg was bouncing and his heart was almost painfully thumping against his rib cage. Link’s eyebrow hitched up, but then he shrugged and opened the box.

“What’s this then?” he asked and picked up the wallet showing it to the camera.

Rhett wrung his hands and drank in the expression of his best friend as the realization slowly hit him. Link stared at the wallet and then at Rhett. His mouth had opened to a perfect little o-shape. He said nothing; he just turned the wallet over and over in his hands.

“Look inside,” Rhett prompted, never before as impatient as he was now. Link’s eyes shot to him again and he looked like he was on the verge of tears.

“No,” Link whispered staring at Rhett.

“Just look,” Rhett pleaded voice as shaky as his hands. He dragged his palms against his thighs; it was simultaneously a desperate way to dry them and a lackluster way to self-soothe.

Link’s hands were visibly trembling as he opened the wallet and pulled out the thin slip of paper. His fingers worked slowly and meticulously as he unfolded it and smoothed it out against the table.

Rhett’s chest swelled and his vision blurred by a film of tears. He wanted to say something. He wanted to explain to Link. There was a speech; things he’d wanted to say, things he wanted Link to know as if he already didn’t. 

No words came out. 

Rhett was transfixed by the rigid form of his life-long best friend. Link sat there, motionless, staring at the faint words and the overlapping stains pressed onto the page all those years ago.

They still had the cameras to remember; they had content to think about. The beasts would love this.   

“Link,” Rhett murmured trying to get Link’s attention. 

What he didn’t know was that Link had been swaying on a precipice; he’d been teetering on the edge of ruin and his name spoken by the soft timbre of his partner pushed him over the cliff. 

Link crumbled. He fell towards Rhett who barely had time to gather him in his arms.

Link clung to him, hands bunched into fists, the back of Rhett’s shirt gathered into them in a pursuit for something tactile to hold on. Rhett pulled him in, held him close and buried his face into the crook of his neck. 

Link smelled like peppermint and coffee. He smelled like long hours and laughter. He smelled like harsh words and sincere apologies.  

In Rhett’s arms was a little boy turned adult but never grown up.

Link’s tears stained Rhett’s shirt and drenched his shoulder. He didn’t care. He was working on his own little creek of salt water near Link’s collarbone.

“We did it,” Link whimpered against the wet fabric. Rhett nodded vigorously refusing to back down even an inch. He held on still, keeping Link in a tight embrace, hoping that his body pressed against his could convey all the things he wanted to say but couldn’t.

“We made an oath. How could we not?” Rhett whispered, voice wet with tears. Link let out a snotty chuckle and pulled Rhett even closer.

Neither remembered the cameras anymore. The crew was quiet. There was a reverence for the moment. Everyone knew they were privileged to witness this and no one would dare to disrupt the scene unfolding before their eyes.

It took a while for them to separate. They moved slowly apart, like they had to fight the pull of each other’s bodies. Rhett’s thumbs rose to Link’s face and brushed away the lingering tears. Link smiled and did the same to him. They sat still for a beat, holding each other’s faces, their foreheads pressed together. 

Always almost too close for comfort. That was how they worked. The blood on the paper had dried decades ago but the blood in their veins still moved by hearts beating in the same rhythm. Always awesome. Always creating.

Always together.

The following Tuesday Briana came into the café after wrapping for the day. She had texted, letting you know she was coming over, and you had her dirty chai ready and waiting for her when she got there. You were sitting over in the corner where it was quiet, two oversized chairs and a small table.

“How was work today?” You asked, sipping on your peppermint tea.

“Exhausting, more so emotionally. Donna is having quite the time in this episode” she sighed.

Knowing she couldn’t give you more than that, despite being your best friend, you ended the topic with a friendly “I’m sure it’ll be great. I can’t wait to see it. So, convention weekend, huh?” You asked her, taking a sip of your tea.

“Yeah! That’s why I wanted to stop by actually. You’ve been a fan of the show for some time now,” she started.

“Uh huh…”

“And we haven’t spent a lot of time together because of you being busy here at the café and me with work,” she continued.

“Uh huh…Bri, out with it!”

“So will you be my plus one to the convention this weekend?” she finally finished, waiting with bated breath for your response.

You sat there staring at her. “Um. Come again? You can do that? I’m not with the show, how can I be a plus one?” you questioned.

“Well, you couldn’t do the panels or anything, or be a part of the photo ops. But we could totally get pictures of us and the other cast members at the end of the con. There’s always Karaoke Friday night, the Saturday Night Special, and just a ton of fun in between. I promise you won’t be bored, or feel awkward and we’ll be able to hang out all weekend, unless I’m doing a panel and ops of course. But it’s still a lot of fun.”

“Bri. Take a breath.” You managed to get out, seeing as she wasn’t letting you get a word in edge wise, clearly trying to get you to go.

“So, you’ll go?” She asked, big smile on her face. “Did I mention you make a really good dirty chai?”

“Wow. Way to butter a girl up to get what you want there, Bri.” You said with a laugh. “But sure, since you practically made up my mind for me.”

“Yay!!” she squealed as she jumped up to hug you. “It starts with a pajama party Thursday night with Kim and I, then it actually gets going Friday and ending Sunday. Think you can go all weekend?”

Thinking about it, you didn’t have any cake orders, your product was really stocked up. You were suddenly thanking yourself for putting in those 12 and 13-hour days for the last couple of weeks. There wasn’t anything going on that your assistant couldn’t handle.

“Sure!” was all you had to give her.

“Great! I’ll text you tomorrow. We can share a room at the hotel if you want. I know we all live in the city, but it’s just easier being in the same place as everything going on. Pack comfy and cute clothes, and maybe a bottle of wine, no, definitely a bottle, or two. And some of your wonderful pastries! Can’t forget those.”

And just like that she was out the door, leaving you to think about the coming weekend, which was when you realized what you just said yes to.  The convention…in Vancouver…where they film; Briana, Kim, Jared…and Jensen. An entire weekend being surrounded by the cast, including a certain green eyed man. Yeah, this was going to go well.

You left work Wednesday, feeling excited about the coming weekend. You went over everything with your assistant, with her reassuring you that everything would be fine while you were gone, practically pushing you out the door. You always did have a hard time taking vacations or time off of any sort, just because you worried about something happening while you were away.

When you got back to your apartment, you started making a packing list of everything you needed for the weekend. You tried to pack light, but that never happened with you, although you were trying to remind yourself that, on the chance you needed anything, you were just a quick drive from the hotel.

Looking through your closet, you pulled out a few different items. Keeping in mind that Briana told you to dress comfy, you decided to leave the heels at home, and opted for your converse. They were pretty versatile, and with a cute pair of sandals and black flats, you had options. You pulled out a pair of jeans, a couple of old band t-shirts and a short waisted black leather jacket. It was light enough that you wouldn’t over heat or get tired of wearing it.

You also pulled out a super cute maxi dress with a floral pattern that you paired with a denim jacket. Looking again at everything hanging up, your eyes fell on a blue flannel shirt, so cozy you could live in it, and you practically did; rolled sleeves, worn, but not worn out. You took it off the hanger, with a simple white tank top to go underneath, and put them in your bag. You knew the outfit of choice of the show was flannel, so you felt weird bringing it with you. You weren’t a super-fan, and honestly, felt a little silly having it be one of your choices. But it was the most comfortable thing you had, in every sense of the word. You moved on to the bathroom, grabbing the essentials, then on to the rest of the apartment tidying up since you would be gone all weekend.

After packing and cleaning, you changed into a pair of sweats and a t-shirt and settled on the couch with your favorite mug, filled with peppermint tea of course, flipping through Netflix debating between a movie or watching any one of the series you had seen four times over. Each. Of course you picked a series, and of course it was Supernatural, because why not, when you were about to spend all weekend with the cast. You had seen all of the seasons, multiple times, but they never failed to bore you. And because you had seen them before, it allowed you to zone out if you wanted, or even fall asleep. Realizing that all of those late days at the café were starting to catch up with you, sleep was becoming very apparant. As you lay on the couch, curled up under a blanket, you could feel your eyelids getting heavy. Trying to stay focused on Dean and Sam saving people and hunting things, your eyes finally closed, those green eyes and beautiful smile, being the last thing you saw before you slipped away.

The next day, you felt the sun on your face, warm and bright. You slowly realized that you don’t get the morning sunlight in your bedroom, which made you wonder what happened. It was when you tried to move, feeling the pain shoot up your forearm, that you remembered that you had fallen asleep on the couch. Moaning while trying to get your body to move, you sat up, trying to clear your head. That was a mistake; I will definitely regret that later today.  You looked at your phone, seeing that Briana had texted you just a little bit before you woke up.

B: Morning!!! You ready for tonight?!

Y/N: Ugh. Morning. I will be once I get my body sorted out. Passed out on the couch last night. Complete mistake.

B: Go for a run, do some yoga, work it out. I’ll be by at 5 to get you.

Y/N: Hmm. I haven’t been on my mat for a while, that does sound nice. See you at 5.

Changing into something more suitable for yoga, you lit a candle, put some relaxing music on and rolled out your mat. It felt good to center yourself and move your body.

After a shower you went out and got a bite to eat, not really feeling like cooking anything. You also had to get a couple bottles of wine, per Bri’s suggestion, as well as a box of pastries from the café. Not knowing what anyone liked, assuming they made it past the three of you, you picked out an assortment, making sure to grab something chocolate, you know, just in case. You may have been amped up on adrenaline at the open mic night, but you didn’t fail to notice that Jensen had been eating a piece of chocolate cake; and now that you thought about it, you weren’t even sure if he knew you were the one that made everything.

You were sitting on the couch reading a magazine when there was a knock on your door. Jumping up, you went to answer it.

“Bri! Finally!” You pulled her in for a hug.

“Relax, I’m five minutes late, you try getting out of the house with a four-year-old.” She said with a laugh. “You all ready to go?”

“As I’ll ever be, I guess.” Letting out a nervous laugh, remembering what this weekend was all about, again.

“Great! Let’s go!” Briana said as she grabbed your bag. Seeing your brace on the counter, she picked it up, gave you a knowing look, and stuck it in your purse. You knew you’d thank her at some point this weekend, you were sure.

Thursday night was a whirlwind of activity and people and photos. It was great seeing some of the fans that joined in on the pajama party interact with Briana and Kim. You were in awe of the two of them, such down to earth and beautiful souled women. You found yourself smiling, watching them laughing with a couple of fans, taking a few selfies. The rest of the night was a blur, laughing, talking, making friends and of course, singing was involved. Briana and Kim ended the night and you all made your way up to the room you were sharing. It really was like a sleepover all weekend; you weren’t upset at that, you missed the company.

“Ok ladies, here is the wine and the pastries.” You said as you pulled them out of your bag.

“Sweet! Uhh…No pun intended…?” said Kim. Pulling out a bottle of whiskey from her bag. “By the way Y/N, the pastries you sent back with Jensen the other day were amazing! I’m so glad you brought these!” She said taking a raspberry macaron out of the box and taking a bite.

“Yeah, Kim wasn’t the only one that enjoyed them. Someone barely even shared the box with the rest of us!” Briana said, making you blush. Knowing both of them saw.

Trying your best to play off the next question, and really hoping you could ask it without any further interrogation, you chanced it and asked with a light laugh, “Is he even aware that I’m the one making all of these?”

“Probably not, it is Jensen after all” Briana responded, giggling from the wine and eating a pistachio eclair.

Kim was all over the questioning of the evening. “So…speaking of Jensen, what’s going on with the two of you?”

Looking between the both of them, and quite confused, wine glass almost to your lips, all you could respond with was “Nothing” and a shrug of your shoulders. “He came to open mic night, then to pick up coffee, literally nothing has happened” you went on.

“But if it did…” she continued.

“I don’t know. I guess I’d see what would happen…?” You actually never had thought about that. Sure, he was handsome, seemed to be sweet, funny and charming. His smile was something you could look at all day. His slight Texan accent, well that was a whole other story.  And his eyes. Those gorgeous emerald gems…

“Hello. Earth to Y/N. You still with us?” Briana said, waving her hands in front of your face.

“Hm? What? I was just trying to…yeah I got nothing. I was thinking about Jensen. Happy? But it was Kim’s fault, she brought him up” You said matter of factly with a groan and laugh, knowing how much trouble you were in.

“I knew it!!” Exclaimed Briana. The three of you now laughing, still drinking and eating the treats.

A couple hours later you all called it a night, so that you could get up early for breakfast, some much needed coffee, and the start of the convention.

You and Bri got into bed, sharing one of the two queen size beds in the room, while Kim took the other. “How are you feeling, you ok?” She asked, looking over. You knew what she meant. She was always looking out for you.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” You said with a small smile, laying down gingerly, looking forward to sleep.

Is There Microglass In Your Chapstick? A Conspiracy Theory.

Lip balm and chapstick are a necessity and if it is not within reach you’re lips will mostly be as dry as the Sahara desert. Why is it that we constantly crave the balmy goodness?

•Main Theory:

The greatest beauty conspiracy theory mainly revolves around Carmex & EOS. It is speculated that the reason we continue to purchase the product is because there is microglass, cut glass or some sort of irritant to cause your lips to become increasingly more chapped or dried out rather than hydrated. Also, it is rumored that it contains formaldehyde (an embalming fluid that preserves bodies of the deceased). The reason why this belief is spreading is because once someone becomes dependent on the soothing balm, consumers will continue to buy the item and companies will make profit. The simple explanation is pieces of glass (not clear to the human eye) create small cuts in/on your mouth that in turn damages the outer layer.

•The EOS Lawsuit:

In January 2016, Los Angeles resident Rachel Cronin filed a lawsuit against the brand EOS (Evolution of Smooth) after claiming that when it was applied to her lips, her mouth broke out in blisters & rashes. She reported her lips felt dry and compared them to sandpaper.

•My Thoughts:

There could be a possible truth to this theory because some ingredients tend to cause allergic reactions. Personally I have had experiences where my lips undoubtedly feel extra dry when my lip balm is freshly applied based on the type I put on. However it was proven by dermatologists that if these manufacturers put microscopic cut glass into their product(s), they would be taken off the shelf due to standards not being followed. Rather than being helpful, some balms could be used for cosmetic purposes only and should be avoided. Irritation and sensitivity could be caused by the following:

•Salicylic Acid:

It’s in Carmex to to lightly exfoliate skin and also dries out the lips overtime. “Higher concentrations of salicylic acid, or salicylic acid not used with an emollient, may cause excessive dry skin.” Emollient is a soothing substance that seals moisture in the skin layers.

•Benzocaine:

Those allergic to the anesthetic experience increased redness and chapping after even just a few uses.

•Beeswax:

“This is often contaminated with propolis, a gluey substance secreted by bees that is a building block and repairing substance for their hives.”

•Lanolin:

An alcohol derived from wool.Lanolin also cross-reacts with another ingredient in Carmex called cetyl alcohol.

•Phenol:

A drying ingredient to kill bacterial growth.

•Other components to look out for:

-Menthol

-Camphor

-Fragrance } could cause

-Peppermint} burning

-Cinnamon } sensation

-Vitamin E

-Aloe

•Alternative:

Using a temporary balm will not cure cheilitis simplex (chapped lips) or peeling/bleeding. Instead use a specific brand that incorporates sunscreen or simply take the route of Vaseline also known as petroleum jelly creating a protective barrier on the outside layer. To be considered a lip protectant the product should contain allantoin, aluminum hydroxide gel, calamine, cocoa butter, cod liver oil, colloidal oatmeal, dimethicone, glycerin, hard fat, kaolin, lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum, sodium bicarbonate, topical starch, white petrolatum, zinc acetate, zinc carbonate and zinc oxide.

idk, the only g&s I know is Pirates of Penzance, which my high school did for the spring musical my sophomore year. I loved the patter songs and I really enjoyed the video you posted where they sang about becoming a ‘normal’ young man. Also I know Pirates of Penzance references the Pinafore musical but know nothing about it. So I guess…any recommendations for musicals/videos/specific songs? Places I can watch productions?

Ok, first off you have got to watch Patience. That’s what that clip I posted was from. Patience is super Hugo fandom relevant because it’s all jokes and parody of the Romantic movement. Later than LM and in England, but still. I don’t know a good place to watch it online - if there are any - but you if you have a decent local library system they may very well have a copy. Libraries are generally good resources for things like opera. The clip from before comes from the Opera Australia version, which I own a DVD of but haven’t watched yet.

Honestly, if you can’t find it and you live in the US I would mail you my copy if you promised to mail it back after you watched it. Or I can see if I can rip the file.

The other play you should watch ASAP is, yes, HMS Pinafore. It’s a lot like Pirates in tone, so I think you’ll like it. Despite the naval theme, Pinafore’s really about poking fun at social stratification and hypocrisy relating to class and wealth.

And good news! The complete Opera Australia production is on youtube here!

That production was accompanied by Trail By Jury, which is a short piece (around half an hour) set in a courtroom reviewing a case of breach of promise of marriage. You can watch that here if you like - it’s not one of the more popular works and I wouldn’t say it’s essential for an introduction to G&S, but I’m fond of it because my dad preformed it when he was young and likes to sing bits from it. There’re some funny bits and catchy songs.

The other really big one is Mikado, which...ok, the thing is that Mikado has some amazing songs and great jokes and is in a lot of ways the best put together (and certainly best loved) G&S work. But it’s a satire of English society that takes place in Japan that was written by a white English dude in the 1880s who knew maybe three (3) facts about Japan as a country. And it’s usually done by mostly or all white opera companies. So that’s a thing you should go into it knowing if you decide to watch it. I think it’s worth seeing, but absolutely ymmv.

The Mikado has one of the most famous patter songs of all time, “As Someday It May Happen,” where the the town executioner sings about the sorts of people society could well do without if he ever had to pick someone to execute, e.g. “the people who eat peppermint and puff it in your face” or “the idiot who praises with enthusiastic tone all centuries but this and every country but his own.” It’s constantly parodied and updated so you can find a lot of variants online. I can give you opinions on some of the available recordings if you want to watch it, but I don’t know what’s available online.

That should be a good start! Maybe start with Pinafore since that’s so easily available, and please let me know how it goes!

You might wonder, “What were there means of waking up in the morning?” or “how does the alarm clock before look like?” Well, we can certainly tell you what and how for that matter. Our ancestors tend to “over drink” water to enable themselves to wake up early. You know, even you are cozy at sleep, you can’t stop an overloaded bladder. Others use roosters as a clock. We all know that these creatures tend to make a sounds as early as four o’clock in the morning. It is convenient because rooster doesn’t just serve as a clock but also as a pet use in cock fights. Comic-Con, the geek event of the year, just wrapped up in San Diego. Not surprisingly, Marvel Studios and its stars were the big draws at the 2017 event.

I'm not a fan of big comic books and their spin-off products, but I did cross paths with some Comic-Con folks a few years ago on a tax-related trip to San Diego. And I admit this past weekend I clicked on a few stories and video clips, albeit to check out Thor, aka Chris Hemsworth. (Go ahead, judge me.)

But the growth of the super hero and fantasy world as a lucrative business venture means there's more of a tax reason to pay attention to Marvel and its brethren. Specifically, many such movies, including hoped-for blockbusters, are getting tax help.

California hands out movie tax breaks: "Captain Marvel," in which Academy Award winner Brie Larson will portray Carol Danvers and her titular superhero alter ego, is one of three big-budget films that have qualified for tax credits from California for filming in the state.

"Captain Marvel" won't hit theaters until 2019, but Comic-Con 2017 fans got a sneak peek at the distaff superhero flick. One revelation was that the movie will be set in the 1990s.

Ninety-two productions applied for the Golden State's tax credit in this third fiscal year that the state has operated under the tax breaks expanded version. Eight movies were approved for tax subsidies totaling almost $68 million.

California's new film credit rules allow productions with budgets of $75 million-plus to be part of the program. Major movies can receive up to a 20 percent tax credit for a production's first $100 million in qualified expenditures.

Under that more open application criteria, "Captain Marvel" was OK'ed for a conditional $20.8 million Golden State tax break. The movie, which also stars Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury before his eyesight accident, is the first Marvel film primarily produced in California since 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

Most Marvel films have been shot mainly in Great Britain and Georgia, which is the home state — and tax-credit supplier — for "The Walking Dead" on AMC.

The World War II action movie "Midway," underwritten by The Mark Gordon Company, was given $13.9 million.

Big movies, big state rewards…maybe: The three major studio movies awarded tax breaks this year bring to six the number of big-budget films that have been lured to California thanks to the revised tax credit, according to California Film Commission Executive Director Amy Lemisch.

"Such films are a primary target for the tax credit program because they can bring significant jobs and spending to regions across the state," Lemisch told Variety.

Opponents of the movie (and television and video game) tax credits disagree with Lemisch's assessment of the value of movie and TV productions. They contend that the short-term economic effects don't make up for the expenditure of public tax money on private projects.

That's why every year some states reconsider their movie-related tax breaks, often deciding to end them.

But California officials obviously think otherwise. Given Hollywood's history in growing the domestic film industry, I understand why the state has decided to expand its tax breaks.
