'...I expect Past Lives to triumph here and while American Fiction seems like a very possible runner-up I can’t help but think that the post-Oscar snub popularity of films like May December and All of Us Strangers could be strong pushes for FI voters...

And Jimmy Kimmel can keep his day job. The Will Smith jokes were tasteless and too much tonight underlined all the racist/anti-Black sentiment out there (wasn't helped by that Entertainment Weekly set of anonymous interviews this past week).

Short Takes at LYIFF: The North has a new film festival, and it's awesome

This weekend indie cinema got its rightful moment in the spotlight, as the Lytham International Film Festival took over the iconic Lowther Pavilion. With features, shorts, and curated strands from festival partners - including our old mates at Beyond the Bar programming the 'After Dark' strand - this is a festival rooted in its Northern roots, with a view to going global. So what better way to showcase the best bits than with a return to the Short world of things?

Across the weekend members of the TheJackSmit.com family seen a lot of shorts, and as ever, we're gonna showcase the best ones here on the blog - because you never know how a career might take off from out of nowhere. It was difficult to narrow it down to just a few, but these were the ones which stood out.

JACK'S TOP 3 SHORTS FROM LYIFF

DARWIN'S FOX

SYNOPSIS: Driven by the urge to prove the existence of an extinct creature, a father and his son head off into the wilderness. But soon the search becomes much more personal, when the son suddenly vanishes without a trace.

The Germans like doing the basics right - and this short from Ben Scharf does just that. In half an hour it has the makings of a feature, with some well thought out cinematography and writing. Importantly this short features young talent Cooper Dillon- who will be next seen in Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

MIDNIGHT RIDE

SYNOPSIS: A drug-dealing, Italian delivery rider resorts to robbing a South London burrito joint after his bike and drugs are stolen, little knowing he might be the one taken for a ride all along.

This was a neat short from Alessandro Farratini Pojani (who has shadowed names like Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent behind the scenes), that has a distinctly British vibe but subverts the idea of a drug dealer trying to get his life back on track... by adding everyone's favourite food delivery service into the mix as he has the unluckiest night of his life. It gets the look and feel pretty much spot on.

A LITTLE GLASS OF RUM

SYNOPSIS: After grieving over the murder of his wife and son, prison guard Stan Ailor dines with the killer, Kenneth for his last meal. The two converse about the murders which leads Stan to getting the revenge he's been longing for.

LYIFF has its roots in the education sector - so to see Point Park University graduates make a short like this, on a similar kind of budget to UK students is nothing short of extraordinary. Going back in time to the 70s, what Carah Chafin did with writer/director of photography Lauren Keller's script, added in with the authenticity of the locations and those performances.... this is a cracker.

MENDO'S CAROUSEL

SYNOPSIS: After the death of her father, a troubled woman robs a dry-cleaning shop to make ends meet, but when the owner finds out, a secret from their past forces her to choose between doing what is right or following in the footsteps of her father.

Reading the EPK for this short, this is quite a personal film about honesty for its writer/director David Michael Maurer - and in 12 minutes it tells an incredibly powerful story. It was a worthy way to close the first session of shorts on day 1, and it is definitely making waves on the festival circuit.

As well as the main festival selection, partners Director's Notes brought some of their featured shorts to LYIFF, and as much as we want to talk about things like crazy American dark comedy The Flute, BAFTA nominated short Stuffed and student effort Heart Failure... they are a bit too 18 certificate to be showcased here on the blog. But ultimately the filmmakers enjoyed a Northern welcome, the audiences lapped up each and every film, and the Q&As hosted throughout the weekend (hosted by LYIFF's festival director Ed Greenberg) got a lot of discussion going.

Joely Richardson, Ella Hunt and Faye Marsay Join The Ensemble Cast Of 3000 Pictures And Netflix’s ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’

Joely Richardson, Ella Hunt and Faye Marsay have rounded out the cast of 3000 Pictures and Netflix’s adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover starring Emma Corrin, Jack O’Connell and Matthew Duckett. This will be the first film to be produced under the new partnership where Sony Pictures will offer Netflix a first look at any films it intends to make for streaming. The deal was announced in April and part of that deal allowed Sony to offer Netflix a first look at any films it intends to make directly for streaming or decides later to license for streaming, and Netflix has committed to make a number of those films over the course of the deal.

The pic will be directed by The Mustang helmer Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre. Life of Pi scribe David Magee wrote the script. Academy Award nominee Laurence Mark and Academy Award nominees Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures are producing.

Based on the classic D.H. Lawrence novel, a story well ahead of its time, we follow the life of Lady Chatterley, a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege, who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with. Lady Chatterley engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible. When she realizes that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.

Richardson is playing Mrs. Bolton, the confident and inquisitive caregiver, though tasked with tending to the lord of the house, she and Lady Chatterley form a true bond that breaks all rules of class and tradition. Hunt is playing Mrs. Flint, the kind young woman from the village that befriends Lady Chatterley as her first friend. Marsay is playing Hilda, Lady Chatterley’s wise and witty older sister, not afraid to speak her mind to protect her sister.

Marisa Paiva is the executive overseeing the project for 3000 Pictures.

RIchardson has had recent ties with Netflix after recently filming its series adaptation of The Sandman. On the film side, she was also recently seen in Red Sparrow opposite Jennifer Lawrence. Hunt is best known for her role opposite Hailee Steinfeld in the Apple series Dickinson and Marsay’s past credits include Darkest Hour and Game of Thrones as the Waif.

'In All of Us Strangers, Adam (Andrew Scott) strikes up a relationship with his mysterious neighbor, Harry (Paul Mescal). The romance between the two characters has been described as “emotionally profound,” with many critics praising the performances of Scott and Mescal.

Director Andrew Haigh knew that Scott and Mescal were perfect for their roles in All of Us Strangers from the very beginning.

“It was so clear that they had chemistry early on,” Haigh said to Empire. “Paul so wanted to work with Andrew, and Andrew with Paul, that it felt like I was watching a love affair happen. That’s what good casting is. You watch a love affair blossom.”

What is All of Us Strangers About?

“One night in his empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Scott) has a chance encounter with his neighbor Harry (Mescal) that punctures the rhythms of his everyday life,” the official synopsis reads. “As Adam and Harry get closer, Adam is pulled back to his childhood home where it appears his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are both living and look the same age as the day they died 30 years before.”

All of Us Strangers is written and directed by Haigh, based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers. Nobuhiko Obayashi first adapted Yamada’s story in 1988 with his Japanese film, The Discarantes. Alongside Scott and Mescal, All of Us Strangers star Jamie Bell and Claire Foy as Adam’s parents. Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Sarah Harvey are listed as producers.'

Netflix has acquired nearly all worldwide rights to “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” a romantic drama starring Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley. Financial terms of the deal are not known, but the pact includes domestic rights.

StudioCanal, which put together the picture, will release the film in the U.K., France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. StudioCanal’s output partner Svensk will distribute the film in Scandinavia. The company will be selling the film in China, where Netflix does not operate.

Based on the best-selling novel by Jojo Moyes, “The Last Letter From Your Lover” is a dual-narrative love story that follows Ellie (Jones), a young journalist in contemporary London who uncovers a series of love letters recounting a star-crossed affair in the 1960s. That romance between Jennifer Stirling (Woodley) and Anthony O’Hare (Callum Turner) is so intense that Ellie becomes obsessed with finding the couple and discovering how their story ended. Moyes’ book is a favorite of many readers, having sold over three million copies worldwide.

Augustine Frizzell (“Euphoria”) is directing the film from a script by Nick Payne and Esta Spalding. The cast also includes Nabhaan Rizwan, Joe Alwyn, and Ncuti Gatwa.

Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures produced the picture along with Simone Urdl and Jennifer Weiss of The Film Farm.

Joining the previously announced Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role and Johnny Flynn as George Knightley, Nighy will take on the role of Emma’s father Mr. Woodhouse, with Hart as Miss Bates. Rounding out the cast are Mia Goth as Harriet Smith, Josh O’Connor as Mr. Elton, Callum Turner as Frank Churchill, Rupert Graves as Mr. Weston, Gemma Whelan as Mrs. Weston, Amber Anderson as Jane Fairfax, and Tanya Reynolds as Mrs. Elton. Autumn de Wilde will direct this new adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, written for the screen by Eleanor Catton with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner and Blueprint Pictures’ Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin producing.

Principal production began this week in England and will run through the spring. Focus Features and Universal Pictures International will distribute the film worldwide.
