investors must be appeased. through cotillion-cured interaction, through banquet and blood seeping beef - effervescent glass and immoral tale. sugar-tinted sin dipped in absinthe. laid to tongue and licked from silver spoon. he must have sampled the wares without her notice or else some other madness seized him - enough to ensnare her wrist (an action that instinctively saw to the clutching of her cutlery) and draw it to the bent direction of his lips. weapon would not be relinquished, save only when with a subdued growl and proper pressure point applied, unlocked fingers sent knife clattering to tabletop (covered by a bawdy cheer badly or fatefully timed). before fist can reform, the terror of his tongue sets to tracing - sending skin squirming in discomfort, disquiet. the derangement deepening enough to color the soft swell of bodice-bound breasts, deep breath taken to swallow down disgust and other damnings. he laps like a dog scenting something soon to be dead, still twitching in a ditch and demanding to be eaten before decay sets in. she curls what she can, just barely brandishing nails to imbed into her own flesh, the smallest bejeweled impressions of crescents, dotted ruby, red - before he bends full fingers even further back (with another low warning hatched and halving his throat). wince winds momentarily across otherwise unphased features, the lowest least heard grunt giving signal to the last of her resistance. he sets upon the marks like one sucking the last sweetness from summer berries. she takes up her goblet and sips, surveying the gilded feast and the guests who will not leave, using all available strength left to curtail the instinct to clap a slap to that chiseled cheek. mixed company would not stop him from making an example and demonstration of her that would run through the grapevine like mutated ivy, spreading as fast as spilled wine across fine linen.

ok, i’ve just finished the first episode of the miniaturist after reading the books years ago and...I have to ask: why is Petronella the only person who wears a splash of color in all of Amsterdam?
