How does one survive PhD applications (and/or postdoc applications)?
Haven't applied for a postdoc, have no intention of ever doing so (I intend to go straight into industry because I'm in a field where you can do that and it's a good idea.)
If you're asking me this because you're a senior in undergrad who wants to apply for a PhD, it's a bit late for that! Most deadlines in the US are Dec. 1. My recommendation if you're in this situation is to try and get hired for a short-term research position at your university (if you've done undergrad research) and apply next fall.
PhD applications— my advice is extremely specific to the physical sciences (and the US), so keep this in mind. (That is to say, this assumes you don't have a master's.)
-If you've not done any undergraduate research or worked in industry for a while you're fucked for right now. Go work in industry for a bit.
-If you've done undergraduate research, make sure you have a good relationship with your PI and get them to write you a killer letter of recommendation.
-Get really good relationships with at least two other research faculty at your university; make sure they know the research YOU'RE doing and are interested in, and make sure you know the research they're doing. They'll write you better letters that way.
-Research the faculty at the schools you are applying to— DO NOT GO SOMEWHERE BECAUSE IT IS A BIG NAME UNIVERSITY. GO THERE BECAUSE IT HAS PEOPLE DOING WHAT YOU LIKE. (preferably at least 3, though given my experiences I'd suggest at least 5; sometimes funding falls through, or you don't get along with groups, etc.)
-Incidentally, if you're not sure where to start looking for people doing things you like, ask your undergrad PI or other faculty doing things you like at your undergraduate institution.
-If it isn't discouraged, around the time you apply, start talking to the people that you're interested in at the universities you apply to about their research— they can't generally automatically give you a thumbs up (that's up to the admissions committee) but they'll be a strong thumb on the scale if they like you.
-As an extension of this, make sure that you have a vague idea of the sort of topic you'd be interested enough in to spend five to seven years working on it to the exclusion of everything else. You may think you "like everything"; I think it's actually better to focus on what you dislike and think about if certain topics will be having you do a lot of what you dislike for six years. (If you don't like column chromatography, for example, don't prioritize organic synthesis labs.)
-The research statement: Some of these are really fucking short (<500 words). Some are longer. This should be about what you're interested in careerwise, not about your personal background. It should explain why you're interested in that specific university as well (mention facilities, faculty members, recent publications).
-The personal statement: Should roughly be a "and here's why I'm a scientist" sort of thing. Can have personal history elements, sad backstory, etc. but don't lean too hard on the traumadumping.
-The CV: Since you've probably not gotten a lot of papers out as an undergrad, this is basically going to be a lot like a normal resume, but with a "Publications" section (include any time you presented at an undergraduate or other research conference here! conference papers are papers too) and an "Awards" section (just academic ones. unless you won the nobel peace prize or something).
-The transcript: Obligatory "you must in fact in almost all cases have better than a 3.0 GPA to get considered for PhDs, better than a 3.2 to go to a good (top 50) school, and better than 3.5 for an ivy" mention goes here.
I recommend getting started on seriously writing shit in at minimum early October, and getting your letters of recommendation locked in by around then as well.
Take your time, understand that you're basically writing a job application, and commiserate with the other people making the same decision as you (but don't judge yourself for how you're doing compared to them). If you're overwhelmed, reach out to people you trust.
Also don't apply for a Ph.D. unless you really really really like what you do (and are mentally stable enough that you cry <1x a week on average.)

Cost of Studying in the Netherlands The cost of study at Dutch universities and other higher education institutions depends on a student’s nationality. University fees for Dutch and EU students For students from the Netherlands, other EU/EEA countries, Switzerland or Surinam, the cost of study at Dutch universities and higher education institutions are mostly covered by the government. However, these students are required to contribute a statutory tuition fee an annual amount of around 2.000 euros, set by the government. University fees for non-EU students in the Netherlands For non-EU students study costs are usually higher when coming to the Netherlands. What it comprises exactly depends on what you study. The Netherland’s Student Visa Process The Holland student visa process for a Non –EU student is as below. Provincial Residence Permit- MVV, officially known as Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV). This is also known as the permit to enter the Netherlands. The MVV is applied for on the student’s behalf by the university. MVV allows entry into the country for six months. Most of the courses at universities last for 1 to 4 years, a mere MVV will not suffice. Hence the other option is to apply for VVR. VVR or a Residence Permit -once you enter the country, you need to apply for VVR or a Residence Permit. The VVR is also applied for by the host university. VVR is valid for the duration of the program and is permitted only for study purposes the student had enrolled in. There is another condition attached with the validity of VVR. It stays valid provided the student scores 50% of credit throughout the course duration. As the Netherlands is a part of the European Union, international students from the EU or EEA get special privileges and have different requirements. They require neither the MVV nor VVR for studying in the Netherlands. Such students have to simply request their host institutions to register them with the immigration authority. For students from the USA, Canada, Vatican City State, Monaco, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, only a VVR is required. Requirements for Student Visa for the Netherlands For the successful grant of a student visa for the Netherlands, you must submit these compulsory documents:
Valid passport
Sufficient financial Proof -means validating that you will be able to support yourself financially during your stay. These include either or all transfer of funds, bank statement, and scholarship letter.
Letter from the university you have chosen confirming your admission or enrollment
Proof of payment for all required legal fees
Health insurance
NUFFIC-certificate, a requirement only for Chinese students

Insurance Requirements Netherlands student visa requirements-students are required to have valid health insurance to bear their medical expenses in the Netherlands if required. For non-EU, non-EEA, and students from Switzerland, their EU Health Insurance Card should be sufficient. For those working in the Netherlands, it is compulsory to take the Dutch basic healthcare insurance. Keep this in mind if you intend to work part-time during your course. Hi, I'm a rising senior in college hoping to attend grad school for computer science. Do you have any tips for writing a strong personal statement? How important do you think publications are?
Hi! I’m glad you’re looking into this so early and I’ll try to offer you advice pertaining to your question.
My top 6 advice points:
Think of what makes you stand apart from others. I know this is cliche, but it’s true. Then, try to back it up with a relevant example. I’ll give an example that my med school applicant friends have: the generic gist that most people give for the reason they want to become a doctor is because they want to help others, right? But the BEST med school essays I’ve read are when they not only talk about how they first got interested in medicine but how they made ACTUAL steps towards their interest/ actively contributed towards their interest. It’s one thing to just be like “oh yeah I like helping people and science and medicine so I want to be a doctor” but another thing to be like “I created an organization, I volunteered xx hours, I wrote this paper, etc” and I think that’s where lots of essays sort of fail. So basically, what I’m trying to say is: make sure you back up your interest with ACTION that you’ve done in your personal statement.
QUANTIFY YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN YOUR STATEMENTS!!! Instead of saying “I built 8 robots”, saying something like “I integrated 8 robots during my three months at the company, saving the company over $500,000 in costs” sounds much better. If your resume isn’t up to date with everything (specifically, try to quantify everything you can), definitely work on this. This helps in personal statements!
Let a handful of people of varying closeness review your essay. For me, tbh I am prideful, but I have to learn to let this GO. Because these people genuinely want to help you! If your essay sucks, it’s better you know from these people vs the admissions staff! The reason I say handful of people of varying closeness is because sometimes your close friends aren’t really great in writing, so you want more than one source. Better yet, ask a professor or a manager - basically someone who isn’t your friend. All of the people who reviewed my personal statements definitely helped me (even if I didn’t take in all of their suggestions!)
Try to tailor each personal statement to the college, if you can. For me personally, I tailored each personal statement slightly to the college I applied to. For UC Berkeley, I’d say something like “I would be honored to be admitted to UC Berkeley and can truly imagine myself walking through Sproul Plaza. The world-class staff is amazing for the field and blah blah and I’m confident I will become a better xxx from the program” (well, word it better; I’m free-balling here). Basically, explain *briefly* why you want this particular school and how you can see yourself FITTING in. Don’t overdo it though, obviously - it would look tacky.
Really pay attention to the specific prompt that each college states. Some mention to explain your interest, while others ask to explain why you want to attend this school, etc. Pay attention to the prompt and make sure you answer each component! Don’t just send out the same personal statement to each school!!!!!
Give yourself TIME to write. I’m not sure your process but for me, I give myself plenty of time. And I’ll just literally “ugly-write” (sorta free-balling writing, a very draft form of my essay). Then I’ll continually fine-tune it. Honestly, sometimes I’ll write and look back two weeks later and I’m like “ew that sounds weird” and reword it. Time helps give you some distance and able to see things in a different light.
Also, I’m not sure about publications for computer science but I’m thinking they definitely wouldn’t hurt! I think it falls under #1 & #2 above of standing apart & quantifying your accomplishments (I wrote xx publications that discussed xx and xx). You didn’t specify PhD or if this is a master’s program but from my understanding of phD programs (I’m in a master’s program), it’s research-heavy and a publication would definitely show you are interested in research so it’s like a necessity. For master programs, I think it wouldn’t hurt to have but my personal experience is that master programs aren’t as competitive so publications aren’t **necessary** but obviously they give you a super edge against other applicants!
