I was able to catch one of my Giant Walking Sticks molting the other day! I set up my tripod and phone to record as soon as I noticed him positioning himself to molt. Isn’t he handsome? ✨

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Lobsters in a tree? No, that's just the tree lobster! A member of the stick insect family, this species is considered one of the rarest insects in the world. They are endemic only to Lord Howe Island, a tiny island between New Zealand and Australia, and were believed to have gone extinct in 1918. However, a population of 24 live specimens was rediscovered in 2001, and extensive captive breeding has expanded the population to well over 10,000!

Hello! I love bugs, biology, and your blog! As an asexual reproduction enthusiast, I was wondering if you had any facts about asexual reproduction in bugs less well known than bees and aphids?
Thanks! :D

TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that Timema Monikense is a species of stick insect native to California?
For a stick insect they are rather short and stout but can still use their natural camouflage to hide from potential predators.
Every female member of this species can reproduce asexually (most of the population is female because of that) but the males can occasionally reproduce sexually as well which is helpful in diversifying the gene pool.

A blast from the past. These sketches are from 2015. I had drawn this black beauty phasmid character named Rukus yearssssss ago, and never really kept up or followed through with her. Maybe I can incorporate her in some of my current wasp cartoons. It's sometimes fun to look back on old stuff. The "talk to the tarsus" gives me an idea for a wasp cartoon.

Had a very lovely surprise today! One of my stick insect eggs FINALLY hatched! I’ve had the eggs for a little over 8 months now and just about gave up on them— I’m so glad I didn’t! Hopefully more hatch soon. The last photo is of the parents. 💚
