What’s your thesis about?

i'm gonna build a virtual environment / gallery (like this tiny one i made last year) to explore our / my relationship with AI technologies! it started by me just going "wow these GAN images sure are cool" and then as i read more on the subject i started forming a lot of Thoughts.

i'm working mostly in a magical realism way so it's like. the dataplankton stuff where there's a sort of biodata along with the data and metadata that's being collected en masse, as if it was a paralel world. so the GAN images here are like visions or photographs of this paralel world that we've created / was spontaneously created. building datasets like imagenet is like that story where they try to make a real-size map of the territory.

a lot of this is kind of a fork of the (infamous?) transgenderize the eschaton follow-up, where instead of thinking about the details of a trans story i'm more using the perspective of "what if there were weird pseudo-animals in the data" as a way to explore the medium and the way AI is nothing like the sci-fi skynet type of thing, but something more cosmic horror-y.

how i convey this stuff visually is still kinda up in the air. my intention is to gather images i generated since i started playing with artbreeder in 2020 to repurpose them (in a bit of a "use all parts of the animal" mentality — the energy costs associated with AI are just… a lot), thinking of them as these images of places, objects and animals from "where the data lives". possibly showing them in a sequence going from small to large resolutions and into "background"-less alive creatures (?) as the "real" world becomes inseparable from the data world.

Do have any headcanons for Caspar and Linhardt not like the ship but as individuals (I ship them)

Oh boy do I ever!

Caspar is left-handed in my headcanon! His handwriting is surprisingly careful but his notes are always smudged because his hand gets in the way. But it gives him a slight edge when he's brawling because he catches people unawares when he leads with a left-handed stance! (Yes that's a thing!)

We know from Hopes that Linhardt can draw photorrealism and in his Bernadetta support he offers artistic critique on her painting's color palette so I like to think he received formal education in the arts since he was a child. House Hevring are amidst the most prolific art patrons in the Empire in fact (also headcanon).

Caspar has a sort of identity crisis after the war's over and he realizes he's been kind of a workaholic all his life and doesn't have many hobbies but he's reluctant to take up an interest in something because he thinks he won't be any good at it. Eventually he gets over himself and takes up woodcarving and learns how to play the ocarina! He's so proud of his progress in both

Linhardt starts needing glasses in his early 30s. At first he is a little bit upset because he thinks he's starting to look like his father, but once he finds a model he likes that fits his personality, he accepts it with grace and looks stunning to boot. He wears circular lenses with a slight tint so reading is easier on his eyes.

Caspar is not good at studying languages, but he makes himself understood wherever he goes! He picks up useful expressions and pronunciation surprisingly easily because he will talk to everyone.

Linhardt gets seasick easily, and can't swim. He despises sea travel and spends most of the voyage in his cabin, trying to sleep.

Caspar smells like tanned leather, freshly cut grass, sweat, cat hair and iron.

Linhardt's smells like angelica tea, pine tree needle soap, musty books, pond water and resin.

Caspar can whistle really loudly! He puts his fingers to his lips and the sound carries for miles.

Some of the interests Linhardt fluctuates between after the war: ornithology, mineralogy, entomology, collecting stamps, cross-stitching...

WIP Now I realize that the pen in the image works as a reference for scale. It's hard to figure out the scale of a work in the phone screen. This literally took me around eight months to complete. Luckily no hand cramps, but there was a lot of overthinking and for good reason, because photorrealism is a pain in the bitch. But it's so much fun!

why aren't games blurry anymore????? we've sacrificed artistic intent for photorrealism and for what??? we were happiest with the burry ass color corrected ass ps2 games. bring that back

When I was younger my eldest brother had a collection of fish. He spent a lot of time taking care of them. I am thinking that watching fish was one way of him of taking away worries and be calm. He was a very good accountant, even between his clients was Guillermo Del Toro, yup the Film Director. My brother died before he was 25 of a rare disease in the spine.
