Phuture Doom - Phuture Doom
The combination of metal and electronic music certainly isn't new, though Phuture Doom's self-titled album is a thrilling addition to the canon. The appropriation of black metal aesthetics and their mysterious arrival to Skrillex's OWSLA roster lends itself to the album's use of occult symbolism throughout the esoteric promotional material and the album itself. Phuture Doom is packed with choral chanting, blast beats, and haunting riffs, all blended together with elements from other genres like acid house, gabber, and big beat.

House is a music genre characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and a typical tempo of 120 beats per minute as a re-emergence of 1970's disco. It was created by DJs and music producers from Chicago's underground club culture and evolved slowly in the early/mid 1980s, and as DJs began altering disco songs to give them a more mechanical beat. By early 1988, House became mainstream and supplanted the typical 80s music beat
Tumblr media
House was created and pioneered by DJs and producers in Chicago such as Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Jesse Saunders, Chip E., Joe Smooth, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Marshall Jefferson, Phuture, and others. House music initially expanded internationally, to London, then to other American cities, such as New York City, and ultimately a worldwide phenomenon.
Tumblr media
In its most typical form, the genre is characterized by repetitive 4/4rhythms including bass drums, off-beat hi-hats, snare drums, claps, and/or snaps at a tempo of between 120 and 130 beats per minute (bpm); synthesizerriffs; deep basslines; and often, but not necessarily, sung, spoken or sampled vocals. In house, the bass drum is usually sounded on beats one, two, three, and four, and the snare drum, claps, or other higher-pitched percussion on beats two and four. The drum beats in house music are almost always provided by an electronic drum machine, often a Roland TR-808, TR-909, or a TR-707. Claps, shakers, snare drum, or hi-hat sounds are used to add syncopation. One of the signature rhythm riffs, especially in early Chicago house, is built on the clave pattern. Congas and bongos may be added for an African sound, or metallic percussion for a Latin feel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One book from 2009 states the name "house music" originated from a Chicago club called the Warehouse that was open from 1977 to 1982. Clubbers to the Warehouse were primarily African, gay men, who came to dance to music played by the club's resident DJ, Frankie Knuckles, who fans refer to as the "godfather of house". Frankie began the trend of splicing together different records when he found that the records he had were not long enough to satisfy his audience of dancers. After the Warehouse closed in 1983, eventually the crowds went to Knuckles' new club, The Power House, later to be called The Power Plant, and the club was renamed, yet again, into Music Box with Ron Hardy as the resident DJ. The 1986 documentary, "House Music in Chicago", by filmmaker, Phil Ranstrom, captured opening night at The Power House, and stands as the only film or video to capture a young Frankie Knuckles in this early era, right after his departure from The Warehouse.
In the Channel 4 documentary Pump Up the Volume, Knuckles remarks that the first time he heard the term "house music" was upon seeing "we play house music" on a sign in the window of a bar on Chicago's South Side. One of the people in the car joked, "you know that's the kind of music you play down at the Warehouse!" In self-published statements, South-Side Chicago DJ Leonard "Remix" Rroy claimed he put such a sign in a tavern window because it was where he played music that one might find in one's home; in his case, it referred to his mother's soul and disco records, which he worked into his sets

Odd Genre Time: Warehouse Music
Have some LGBTQ+ history I ran into on a wiki dive. Warehouse or "House" music was invented by a gay Chicago DJ. Frankie Knuckles' mixes of Salsoul and early Electronic music from Europe were the beat of Chicago in 1984. He played at "The Warehouse", a predominantly black, gay dance club. Look this man up because he's a founding father for what we know DJing to be today. By 1985 the "Hot Mix Five" had a hit radio show that highlighted this new sound. These were now 5 DJs that also began making long, continuous mixes that brought all parts of the world into their arrangements. With a popular radio show further standardizing this futuristic sound, more DJs joined in until it was foolish to spin anything else. In the United States, this is the nucleus of what we now recognize as Dance Music in a modern club setting. Bedroom producers who liked this sound hit their local pawn shops for cheap synthesizers.* Some people working in the area's record stores at the time recall a whole section set aside for "Tracks Heard at the Warehouse." It was tempting and profitable to make demo tapes in your bedroom because if you got played at the Warehouse you might get a record deal... So emerged this sound of Chicago gay culture. House music is gay and intersectional, spread the word. If my video above and the history behind it sound like your speed, check out: ---------------------------------------------- Larry Heard - Imagine a neon-lit gay club with this on the speakers. It's so 80's. Warehouse is often described as "textural" and this track absolutely nails it in that regard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N9Wnqz8Rh8 Frankie Knuckles - He was handed a drum machine by a friend who said people are making their own tracks now. Given the chance now to make his own Trax, he chose this. A tune that makes you say "This isn't house music, this is just gay sex." The song's lyrics seem to imply there's a religion-play thing going on, it's VERY gay... Let's just say don't blast this on the work speakers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EtEPT3DvdM PHUTURE - The story about "They didn't know how to use the TB-303s at all, and they still cranked out jams with it." is apparently true and it's about these guys. Self described "Outsiders" they wanted to try making some Warehouse music. A Dj finally gave them a spin at another huge club and found that it played better to crowds later in the night who are on more drugs or just plain drunker. The beginning of Acid House. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igNBeo3QSqc -- *None of the synthesizers they used are cheap anymore :(

Violent Storm
Pairing: Daichi x fem!Reader
Genre: romance, angst
Wordcount: ~2.3k
Warnings: language
Track: Phuture Noize, B-Front – Violent Storm.
A/N: This piece is for @kirakirasaku 's Rainy Love collab. The lyrics for Violent Storm. fit so perfectly with this (though the instrumental doesn't necessarily), I had include them in italics. They are obviously not mine but were written by Marco Spronk and Mark Pot.

I hear silence around me
The whole gym froze. For a moment one could hear a pin drop. Shock was written on every single face in the building. The arbitrator lifted his left arm. A short whistle. The sound of a sheet of paper being turned. A longer whistle. My heart skipped a beat. Bewilderment took over the gym for a second, before half the gym burst into screams of joy. Karasuno had won against Shiratorizawa.
The third-years moved first. A mix of sweat and tears streamed down Daichi’s face as he pulled Asahi into a tight hug, his hands gripping on the other’s shirt. Sugawara stumbled into them, clumsily joining their hug. All three screamed their lungs out, overpowered by their emotions and probably still not believing what was happening. Tsukishima, Kageyama and Hinata got tackled by Nishinoya and Tanaka, with Ennoshita, Yamaguchi, Kinoshita and Narita joining the human pile only milliseconds later.
Clouds are moving in
Everything felt so unreal. Kageyama and Nishinoya had to drag poor Hinata to the baseline, because his knees were too weak to carry his body. The players bowed to each other before walking to the middle and shaking hands with their opponents under the net. Karasuno watched Shiratorizawa leave the court in defeat, themselves swelling with pride.
They lined up one by one in front of the bleachers, but my eyes were on Daichi. “Thank you for all of your support! Thank you very much!” The sound of his voice caused the butterflies to flutter around and my heart skipped a beat. His gaze scanned through the rows, clearly looking for someone.
“Sawamura! Sugawara! Azumane!”, her voice called. Michimiya. The moment his eyes found her a proud smile spread on his lips and he held up a red lucky charm. By the looks of it, she had given it to him sometime before the match.
Dark heavens above me
My heart clenched. I knew it. I knew they liked each other, but my heart refused to accept it. My heart still hoped for having a chance with him, clung to the times he had brought me food when I had stayed in the library for too long and the times he encouraged me to call it a day and go home because otherwise all the studying would be pointless.
The first tear fell down my cheek. A happy one or a sad one, I couldn’t tell. Yeah, I felt heartbroken, but that didn’t stop me from feeling proud and happy for the team. They beat Shiratorizawa. They were going to the nationals. In their final tournament the third-years managed to make it through Miyagi’s qualifying rounds. My urge to just run down onto the court, hug Daichi and tell him how proud I was of him, was overwhelming, but it wasn’t my place. So, I watched the awards ceremony with a heavy heart, my mind torn between emotions. The medals on their chests shone brightly, though not as bright as their eyes. Slowly Karasuno seemed to realize what had happened. The tears had dried up and now proud smiles graced every single face. The Fallen Champions were standing again.
So hard to take in
When the announcer asked for another round of applause for Karasuno, I got up from my seat. In a moment the audience would be allowed on the court and I couldn’t put myself through seeing Daichi and Michimiya. Maybe someday. Michimiya was a nice girl. We talked a few times and while we weren’t even acquaintances, I couldn’t be mad at her – or at him – because nobody is in control of who they fall in love with. And if they were in love with each other I wouldn’t interfere. Neither of them would deserve it. Maybe someday I could even be happy for them. But not today. Not with my feelings caught in such a violent storm.
I feel so alive
So, I blazed a trail through the leaving crowd. Among the saddened fans of Shiratorizawa my own face didn’t stick out, though I still pulled my jacket closer to my body, hiding the Karasuno jersey Suga had given me in June after they had lost to Aoba Johsai. So I could bring them good luck, like he said. Ironically, he had given me a jersey with the number 1 on it. And now that number seemed to be burning on my skin as I looped my arms tighter and tighter around my upper body. My throat tightened; the air seemed to suffocate me. I needed to get out of the building.
Upon seeing the heavy rain clattering on the concrete, my dam broke. Hot tears streamed down my face as I pushed through the doors into the rain, past the people stopping to open their umbrellas. After breathing the stuffy air inside the gym for the last few hours, the rain was freezing cold on my skin and clothes, soaking me in seconds, but I didn’t care. At least this way it was easier to hide my tears.
Adrenaline is pumping
My innermost mind was in revolt. The desire to tell Daichi was raging in my body. I clenched my fist, digging my nails into my skin, focusing on the pain to distract myself from my heart demanding I turn around a go back into the gym.
I wandered a bit away from the building’s entrance, mindlessly, until I found a bench somewhere nobody would walk past me so I could dwell in my sorrow alone. It was so obvious Michimiya and Daichi liked each other, so why did it hurt so much? Why was today different? They hadn’t confessed their feelings, they hadn’t kissed, they had just acted like always. So why did it feel like my heart had been ripped out? Minutes passed as I just sat there, crying my heart out and letting the rain drench me.
I’m in overdrive
“Oh? What are you doing here?”, a curious voice chimed beside me.
Through the mix of tears and rain I could make out a person crouching in front of me. Blinking barely helped my vision but I recognized the red hair and the purple and white clothes. His voice ripped me from my trance. I felt every single rain drop on me, heard the rain’s roaring in the trees.
“Are you okay?” He paused for a second. “No. Sorry. Stupid question. A lonely, crying girl is hardly ever okay. Can I help you? Do you need something? I think I should have some chocolate left, if you want some. Or do you rather need someone to talk to? We don’t know each other, but sometimes talking to a stranger helps.” My only reaction was a shrug of my shoulders. As much as I wanted to talk, I didn’t trust my voice. “Shit. Okay. Should I just stay here and keep you company?”
Needing to be...
I hesitated, but ultimately nodded so he took a seat next to me on the bench. He was a stranger who I would never see again, so I would be spared of the next time seeing him and the embarrassment that would inevitably come along with it.
Minutes passed of the boy and me just sitting there and keeping each other company, staying drenched and me sobbing, sniffing and crying my heart out.
“Did you watch the match?” I nodded again. “Then you know my team lost, but we will be fine. And you will be fine too. Whatever sucks to the point you feel like soaking in the rain will go by and better days will come again.”
Violent storm
Before I could respond, a voice called my name. My heart skipped a beat and my body flinched before freezing. Shit. Of course, Daichi had to find me here. In that moment I just wished for the ground to swallow me. I wanted to disappear and never feel anything again. Was it possible to drown in the rain?
The boy next to me had noticed my tenseness and carefully took my hands in his. “Is he hurting you?” Seriousness had replaced every hint of curiosity in his voice. Shaking my head, I pointed to my heart. Surprisingly, he understood. “Heartbreak?” When I nodded, he hummed sympathetically. “I’ll leave the two of you alone then, but if something’s happening, just scream, okay?” He got up after giving me an encouraging pat on my knee and left. When he passed Daichi, I heard him hiss “Karasuno’s still pissing me off.”
I can see it coming in the distance
“You shouldn’t be out here. You’re gonna catch a cold.” He draped his jacket over my shoulders and even though it was just as soaked as my own clothes, my heart fluttered at the gesture.
It felt like an eternity of silence passed between Daichi and me, the only noise being the rain falling onto the earth. He stood next to me, silently, while my sobs slowly dried up.
“Suga talked to me”, he began after I had calmed down. “Just now in the locker room. Or rather, he lectured me. He told me how dense I was for not noticing Michimiya holds feelings for me when they were so obvious. How he fought the urge to hit me when she gave me the lucky charm today.” He chuckled shyly. “But me not realizing the girl I like returns my feelings is what made him actually angry. I really thought he would rip off my head. I think Suga’s gonna kill me if I don’t confess to her now.”
Once more there’s no way to resist it
When my last tear had rolled down my cheek, it had taken all my energy with it. I was exhausted and just wanted Daichi to tell me he would date Michimiya and leave again. I wanted to get over with the conversation and go home. I stood up with a heavy sigh. “Get to the point, Daichi. I’m tired. Just tell me what you want to tell me so I can go home and dry myself off and you can go to Michimiya and finally confess to her.” When I was tired I got bitchy and technically he didn’t deserve that, but I needed distance. Otherwise, I would never be able to move on.
Break free from our mutual existence
“Suga yelled at me how I didn’t even realize, when she showed up to the most important match in my high school career in my jersey. He told me how he gave it to her a few months ago after we lost to Seijoh.” My heart skipped a beat as his words seeped through my mind and my head flung around. There he stood, hands in his pockets, staring into the void with a glister in his eyes and a dreamy smile on his lips. “I mean, I noticed how pretty she looked in the jersey and my heart fluttered when I saw my number on it. God, I wanted to kiss her then and there, but I thought about what if it was just a coincidence.” His gaze fell on me and the smile widened.
Have mercy, oh violent storm
I thought I had no tears left to cry, but apparently there were still some left which were now dwelling in my eyes as I got overwhelmed by emotions. “Daichi, I–”
Strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist and my face got pulled into Daichi’s chest. And I let him. Because it felt safe. His clothes were as soaked as mine, but he still gave off enough body heat to give me comfort. “Everything’s gonna be fine. I’m here”, he whispered, the rain almost drowning his voice. Unintentionally, my fingers gripped into the fabric of his shirt, my nails probably digging into his skin, though he remained still, patiently waiting for me to calm down.
Rumble’s getting louder
After what felt like minutes of neither of us saying anything, my tears and sobs died down again and I dared to peel my face away from his chest and look up to him. His features hadn’t lost anything of their warmth and care, still smiling like bewitched. Gentle fingers brushed a strand of my drenched hair from my face, before resting on my neck. A single raindrop fell from a strand of his short hair right onto his lips and I couldn’t stop thinking about how bad I wanted him to kiss me.
As if he could read my mind, he bent down and closed the gap between our lips. The touch was gentle to test the waters and give me a chance to back away. But I didn’t want to, so I pulled him closer by his shirt, deepening the kiss. His lips tasted like a mix of rain, a hint of sweat and Daichi.
The ground is shaking
The kiss was intoxicating. My head spun around like crazy and the air in my lungs ran short. Still, I wanted this moment to last forever. Staying forever in Daichi’s embrace and kissing him. A gust of wind pulled on my hair like the storm raging in my heart. Only this time, I wasn’t afraid of the storm, because Daichi had turned the storm’s violence into devotion.
Both of us gasped for air, when we pulled away, our faces only millimeters away from each other. Though I missed the feeling of his lips on mine, the feeling of breathing freely was a relief. My throat worked normal again and neither my stomach nor my mind were twisting anymore.
“Let’s get inside, I don’t want you catching a cold.” His hand slipped in mine so easily as we made our way back into the warm walls of the Sendai City Gym.
Then realization hit me like a tidal wave. My feelings weren’t one-sided. Daichi liked me. I could cuddle with him now. Press my face into his chest. Kiss him. The thought knocked the whole air out of my lungs. He sensed it and his hand squeezed mine affirmingly, without him saying a word. But that’s all I needed.
Realize the power of madness closing in

Phuture - “Acid Trax” Mad on Acid: A Comprehensive History of Acid House Music Song released in 1987. Compilation released in 1998. Acid House
Before we talk about the legendary Chicago house trio, Phuture, who are fully responsible for launching the acid house phenomenon that would eventually take the UK by storm with its 1988 Summer of Love, we need to talk about the Roland TB-303, the electronic instrument that inadvertently ended up revolutionizing electronic dance music with its distinct, squelching and chirping, “acid” sounds. Just about everyone has heard the TB-303 used in a song before, but virtually no one has ever heard it used the way that Roland originally intended. Released to the public in 1982, the TB-303 was supposed to replace and replicate the sound of a bass guitar, but in actuality, it didn’t really sound like a bass at all. As a result, it failed commercially, and Roland ceased its production after only two years.
But that was before Phuture got ahold of it in 1985. Composed of a trio of young Chicagoans who were caught up in their own city’s burgeoning house scene, Phuture began as an idea to produce tracks that member Pierre could mix into his own DJ sets. Initially, Pierre was content with just spinning records, but his friend Spanky was adamant that they start making their own music. Pierre was still reluctant, though.
However, all that hesitancy seemed to disappear when Pierre heard a Roland TB-303 for the first time. A 2014 interview in DJ Mag has more:
Pierre was round at his friend Jasper G's house one day, listening to a track he'd made, and heard a unique sound coming out of the speakers. “I asked what he used to create that sound, and he said the Roland 303,” Pierre remembers. “He was using it to function as Roland intended, but immediately that light went off for me and I thought, 'If we got that machine, we can do some damage'. This is just from hearing it, I didn't even know what it looked like at the time.”
Pierre told Spanky he was in, he wanted to make music (“Yo! Lets do this!”), and Spanky bought a 303 from a second-hand shop for 40 dollars. “Spanky got it and started messing around the same day,” says Pierre. “At one particular session at his house, Spank had a beat going and I just got on the knobs and started twisting them. We kept going, man. We had a jam session for over an hour. We knew there was nothing out there like what we were coming up with, and we knew what it did for us on the inside. We knew that there was something there that spoke.”
Spanky, Pierre and other Phuture pal Herb J started getting alien voodoo out of the machines, jamming, with Pierre being the one twiddling the Roland TB-303. “Spank programmed a beat, and we just went with it,” Pierre recalls. “I got on the knobs and Spanky kept saying, 'Yeah, that's it! Keep doing that'. We all knew, man. It was natural and pure.
Another interview in The Fader provides a little bit more detail of that fateful day:
[Spanky] had it hooked up, running with the drum machine, but it wasn’t [working]. If you get one of those 303s it’s not going to have any baseline sounds in it, so you got to squeak and squack it till it makes some noise. He said he didn’t know what was wrong with it, how to program it right, so he said, “Could you figure it out?” So when I came over by it, I started twisting the knobs, seeing what they do, because that’s what I do: twist knobs. So I was doing that and we fell in love with the sounds it was making. We fell in love with how I was twisting the knobs with the beat. And then I started twisting them a certain way, and putting emotion and feeling behind it, and Spanky was like, “Yo Pierre, keep doing that, I like that.” I was like, “Yeah, this is something!” We were like, “Yo, that’s style.” We said forget trying to make a baseline, let’s program it like this and just twist the knobs. And so that’s what we did, you know.
And thus, the acid house sound was born.
Phuture would take this wholly new, alien sound that was unlike literally anything that had ever been heard before, and jam with it for hours on end. They knew they had something special and they wanted other people to hear it, too. They ended up recording a song called “In Your Mind” and decided to give it to the house DJ whom they admired most and also thought was most likely to play it: Ron Hardy.
From a Discogs review by user Alain_Patrick:
As soon as they gave Ron the tape, the visionary DJ listened to it and said, smiling: “It’s ok... When can I get a copy?”
That night, Hardy played “In Your Mind” a total of four times. As a song that clocks in at almost 12 minutes alone, that means he dedicated at least the better part of an hour of his set to this one song. Legend has it that the first two times he played it, the crowd wasn’t feeling it at all. A less confident DJ could’ve then very easily taken those reactions into account and decided to never play the record again, but Hardy seemed determined to get his audience to believe in this track the same way he did. There was a transformational moment in dance music history taking place right before people’s very eyes and Hardy was going to force his fans to embrace it. By the time he gave “In Your Mind” a third spin, the collective opinion of the club did a complete 180 degree turn and the dancefloor mutated into spiritual bedlam.
Word soon then spread about this otherworldly bit of cosmic funk. Fans dubbed it “Ron Hardy’s Acid Tracks,” and possibly because of how relentlessly Hardy had pushed it, people assumed that Hardy had made it. But he didn’t; he was just its primary evangelist. However, in order to avoid confusion, Phuture changed the name of their song from “In Your Mind” to “Acid Tracks.”
It wasn’t until 1987 that “Acid Tracks” would finally appear on wax. Executive produced by now house legend, Marshall Jefferson, the song was released on Chicago’s Trax Records, and despite their vital contribution to the history of both popular and underground music, Phuture has only seen a total of $1,500 in revenue from that record. It goes without saying, but that’s some really shameful shit.
Anyway, a song like “Acid Tracks” represents the absolute potential of the “acid” sound. It’s an experiment that uses the TB-303 as a maker of both melody and rhythm in a way that no one had ever previously thought of. As Pierre twiddled and twisted away on its knobs with purpose, like how a guitarist plucks and strums on their strings, he managed to unveil a full, undiscovered range of never before heard, nearly impossible to describe, fat and thick, funky sound. Spanky laid down the constantly changing series of hats, claps, snares, cowbells, kicks, and whistles to provide minimal layers of accompaniment to the leading, unpredictable heaps of acid, and unsung member, Herb J, who was also in on the action, played a part in co-writing the song with Pierre.
It’s impossible to know what the history of electronic music would’ve been like without “Acid Tracks.” Literally tens of thousands of songs that use the TB-303 like Phuture did have been released in just about every electronic music subgenre since. Had Phuture never chosen to exploit their discovery, or had Ron Hardy given up on it after its first two spins, all those acid tracks that followed would have likely never happened. It’s entirely possible that someone else could have discovered that sound accidentally, too, if Phuture didn’t, but who’s to say that they would’ve thought it was usable? Without “Acid Tracks,” there’s no 1988 Summer of Love in the UK, and there’s no incorporation of acid house into popular alternative music like The Happy Mondays or Stone Roses. The future that we would come to know about electronic music is highly improbable, if not impossible, without Phuture.
One of the most important tracks in electronic music’s history, bar none.

COOLTURE

PHUTURE MEMORIEZ: THE ART OF WAR
Tumblr media
The Art of War – Phuture Memoriez Release Date: October 9th, 2019
Track Listing:
1. Manoeuvering 2. Laying Plans 3. Terrain 4. Attack By Stratagem  5. Army On The March 6. NRG Or NRJ 7. Weak Points And Strong 8. Attack By Fire 9. The Use Of Spies 10. Future Memories 11. Variations In Tactics 12. Passion With Fire
Phuture Memoriez is a new project based in Vancouver consisting of Marc Blaquiere on vocals, bass keys, and the MPC beats, and Jessica Blaquiere who does synth and effects.
Both artists share duties on sampling as well. The band has stated that this album "highlights the gloriousness of the Akai MPC Live, as the foundations of each song were written using this work station. Thus, the album pays homage to the sounds and old school hip-hop nature of the MPC.” There's a lot of deep bass, and the whole thing has sort of a dreamy atmosphere. There are some tracks with no vocals, and there are a lot of extended beats. Although this is a concept album, there is a lot of range in the musical elements—the tempos and style change, sometimes drastically throughout. I was impressed by how much is explored amongst 12 tracks, especially for a first release.
Each song on this album is named after a chapter in Sun Tzu's The Art of War, hence the title. The concepts of each track detail different types of wars, whether amongst others or within oneself. The overall mood, especially in the lyrics, is a bit depressing; it almost has an existential feel to it. It's very immersive and dark musically. You can hear the melancholy emotions and angst throughout, both in the vocals and mixing. While some of this synth is upbeat, much more of it creates a moody, gloomy atmosphere.
This has the feel of a video game soundtrack in many parts. It's ambient and electronic.
There is a lot of sampling of dialogue, distorted sound effects, and looping used. Almost every song has this unique mix to it, so it's really interesting to hear more than once. I noticed new sounds with every listen. The engineering and production is simple, but effective. I can tell each new sound bit was used in a careful effort to fit on each track properly, and it works.
Marc's vocals are soft and soothing, although sometimes distorted. He often loops his own voice, adding to the almost psychedelic/‘trippy’ feel of the music. This is especially noticeable in "Attack by Stratagem" and "Future Memories." The reverb effects help maintain a sense of distance – as if his voice is far away, lamenting songs helplessly. This album really had me feeling all kinds of things.
The album sounds very futuristic, yet almost timeless. It reminds me a lot of Depeche Mode. A very ambitious release that explores its potential, and experiments.
Overall, I really enjoyed discovering Phuture Memoriez and their first album. It explores the potential of a synthesizer and manages to incorporate several genres throughout 45 minutes. There's funk, pop, and even a bit of new wave and hip-hop. It's a lot of fun for any electronic music listener and suits many environments, whether alone at night on headphones or at a party.

Current Music Obsessions: December 1 - 16, 2018
I'm a bit late on posting this, but better late than never. I didn't listen to too much stuff this first half of December since I've been busy with life and also listening to and finishing my list of new releases (which the top 10 favorite albums post will come out either on the 23rd or 26th). But enough of that, let's see the honorable mentions.
Within the Ruins - Resurgence Sylvaine - Severance Helalyn Flowers - When it is Not Black Enough Meg Myers - Tear Me to Pieces Shattered Skies - Fall from Grace TroubleMe - Шрами Tragodia - A Temple in Time Enemy Inside - Halo Aesma Daeva - The Loon I:Scintilla - Human Conception - Into the Wild Conception - My Dark Symphony In the Woods... - Empty Streets Northward - Drifting Islands feat. Irene Jansen (Floor's sister) Northward - Northward Phuture Doom - Doom Terror Corps Circus of Fools - Smile Baby, Chelsea Smile feat. Antoine Marionette
And now for the main obsessions.
Heart of a Coward - Hollow
This song randomly got stuck in my head one day and I wound up rekindling my love for it. It's a pretty djenty death metal-ish track. I remember hearing it on Music Choice one day a few years ago and really digging it back then and I still do today. I need to check out the metal station on MC again, but I know I'll still not like majority of the stuff on there.
Enemy Inside - Falling Away
After falling in love with Lullaby, I had to check out the Phoenix album. It's such an epic album and was a close contender for my top 10 favorites of the year list. This track has such a cool flow to it that I really dig. And I love Natassja's orange eye makeup in one scene in the video. Definitely an awesome track that packs quite the punch.
Doorway to Salvation feat. Georg Neuhauser (Serenity, Phantasma)
Got another song from these guys. This and Lullaby are definitely my favorites off the album. Natassja and Georg's voices go so well together. I'm already a sucker for his voice because that lower register just makes my bussy quiver, but both of them singing together is perfection. It's such a gorgeous track and I absolutely recommend you guys check it out.
Sylvaine - Worlds Collide
This song is so pretty. It's so peaceful and lovely. A perfect song to just chill to. The vibe of it just seems like one of those songs that would be perfect to listen to on one of those days when you're just not feeling it or when it's raining outside.
Décembre Noir - Barricades
Found this song through their record label and really loved it. It's a wonderful death-doom track. The singer's cleans are absolutely gorgeous and I wished he used them more in the way he does on this track on the rest of the Autumn Kings album. That aside, I really love this track. The power and the production are absolutely wonderful.
Progenie Terrestre Pura - Toward a Distant Moon
I'm honestly surprised by how much I really dig these guys. I'm genereally not into this style of black/death metal, but I really like these guys so far. The aggressive riffs and overall vibe really contrasts against the transitions into ambient parts of their music, and that work is really present on this track and I love it. I also really dig the slight symphonic elements on this track.
Cupcakke - Dangled
This is her latest single and it's so bomb. I really love her more serious tracks like this. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE tracks like Duck Duck Goose, but homegirl really knows how to talk about life and things that really matter. It's a new dream of mine to see her live and to possibly even meet her one day. She's such an icon, especially for us queer folk.
Meg Myers - Take Me to the Disco
Just like Progenie Terrestre Pura, this is another artist I wasn't expecting to love as much as I do. This song is so different from Jelous Sea and Numb, but it still fits in with her brand. It's so chill and pretty, but there's this slight sense of melancholy to it that I really love. I'm a sucker for sad music. I keep finding myself humming the tune and singing the chorus throughout the day. It's so lovely.
The Great Discord - Army of Me (Bjork cover)
I was so excited when they started teasing a new song, but I wasn't expecting this. Army of Me is such an iconic Bjork song, so for them to cover it is such a bold choice, but that wasn't the only bold choice they made with this. They went on a full on industrial kick with this track. It suits the track so well, but I wonder how it would've sounded in their typical progressive metal sound, just simply out of curiosity. Anyways, I love this cover so much.
Starkill - Evil Inside
They did that. They fucking did that. This is a perfect single for them. Shows off every member's talents. I was beyond shocked when I heard Sarah screaming on this track. I wasn't expecting it. She keeps proving to be an epic more and more with each new track. And again, this track sounds the way Shadow Sleep should've sounded. The production is amazing.
The Hardkiss - Complicity
One of the big reasons why I absolutely adore these guys is the fact that even though they are a progressive pop/rock band, they aren't afraid to teeter alond the lines of metal, and this track definitely shows that off. I love it when they get like this. They just keep getting better and better with each album. I wonder when they're gonna drop a fullblown metal album. I'm so down for that. Anyways, go check this amazing track out.
Lighthouse in Darkness - Photography of a Ghost
They finally have a new single out and it is everything. Helen's voice is absolutely stunning here. I love how she sings in her lower register so much with this project so far. Also I'm so shocked by the operatic vocals in this track. If that's her, gurl. So much yes. I can't wait for the album to drop early next year. Flowing Tears will always be amazing to look back on, but I think this might be Helen's best work.
Kambrium - Ghost Shaman
I found this track through Unknown Power Metal on YT and I must say, I was shocked to hear something like this. You don't hear that many power metal bands that blend death metal into their music and it actually turn out great. The flow and energy in this track are epic. It's definitely a powerhouse of a track.
Within Temptation - Raise Your Banner feat. Anders Friden (In Flames)
THIS. THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. It feels like it's been so long since these guys released a track with so much raw emotion. And the music video is everything. I can't wait for Resist to drop. Even though the power and rawness of the song are the main reasons why I love this song, I also love how relevant this track is today. Stand up against the oppressors and fight for freedom.
öOoOoOoOoOo - Rules of the Show
I got to listening to Samen again recently and wound up falling in love with this track. Chenille are one of the weirdest bands out there all thanks to Asphodel being the insane lady she is. This song is definitely the epitome of avant-garde metal, but holy tits is it weird. Like I said, Asphodel is a weirdo, but that weirdness gives birth to amazing shit like this.
Kalidia - Circe's Spell
I'm not into a lot of their music since it's too much on the power metal side a lot of times, but they also have amazing tracks like this that I absolutely love. I love the oriental vibe of the track. This track shows off Nicoletta's vocal range so well. She has such a good range and a wonderful voice.
Viktoria Modesta - Prototype
I found this track while listening to Kerli one day and holy shit was I blown away. I didn't know what to expect when going into this, but I for damn sure wasn't expecting that. This song goes off in the beat department. It's one of those tracks where you absolutely need to put your headphones in and blast it. Also, the video is divine. I love visual videos so much.
The 3rd and the Mortal - Ring of Fire
I decided to listen to Kari's old band after listening to her solo stuff one day and came across this song. It's so lovely. I kinda wish she would make doom metal these days, but the shoegazey experimental folk music will suffice. This track is so lovely and haunting. So good.
Beast in Black - Sweet True Lies
The 80's cheese is real with this one, especially with the video. The video is everything. These guys are definitely one of the few heavy metal bands I like and it's all because of the cheese and Yannis' powerful voice and range. I can't get enough of it. This song is just so good and beyond cheesy.
And that's it for the first half of December. The final installment of the year is just right around the corner. I wonder what's gonna be on it.
