Planning a Mallory Grace cosplay: The Ironwood Tree Dress, but more medivaler
This came about for two reasons: one, recently I've been making fabric flower corsages, mostly to wear on my head, and two, I was reminded of the imagery of green clad young women from medieval times.
Tumblr media
If you know Mallory, you probably know this image. We have a few more useful images as well, but we won't be sticking to them; they'll just be inspiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there four images we get the details that
the dress is mostly white with deep green accents
it has the princess cuffs over the back of the hands on the under sleeves
the over sleeves are angel sleeves
Mallory's hair is in a little ribbon cage with two silver flower pins
there may be a subtle flower brocade on the skirt
The skirt has two tiers of bottom ruffles and a border above them with three stripes
There appears to be a white underdress peaking out of the sleeves and skirt
I loved this dress design as a kid, but I think the bodice is actually rather unflattering. It reminds me of some armor breast plates, which is cool, but doing what's basically a paned sleeve as a bodice... makes me think of a pumpkin. This artistic difference led to me sketching a new design
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This design is a houppelande underneath a boat necked cotehardie/kirtle with a shortened hem. I did another pass on the cotehardie design (see the left). I'm going to do the embroidery with silver clon cord and beetlewings I already have from another project. The neck is going to be cut even lower, and I'll make a lattice pattern out of ribbons or fabric strips over a sheer fabric to stabilize it. The embroidery isn't period, but it covering the bodice is inspired by some miniatures depicting that composition.
I also needed to scrap the ruffle on the houppelande- the fabric I wanted to use is an old dark green Ralph Lauren flat sheet with a rose jacquard pattern, and I don't have enough of it for a houppelande already. My solution to this is that I'll be color blocking the houppelande, and making up the difference with a complementary green fabric. The houppelande will be working with the circle theory.
I planned to use silver curtains I already had for the overdress, but it has this evil rubber backing fused on so it won't behave for this. I'll be in the hunt for an appropriate silvery fabric.
The original dress has no clear and specific historical source imo, other than it does resemble a boat necked cotehardie a bit. The hair, however, is clearly a coazzone. The most well known depictions of this are from 1490s Italy. However, in Spain it was worn at least between the 1360s and the 1530s. There are multiple theories about what exactly these were, including a veil that's been wrapped around a braid or ponytail with ribbons. I'd probably make a "fixed" version, so I wouldn't have to re-wrap the ribbons every time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, the cotehardies and houppelandes i was looking at were moreso mid to late 1300s. While the coazzone does fit that time in Spain, it has a late "feel". So I kind of want to make a bycocket in addition to a coazzone and flower corsages, to give me options for headgear. The bycocket is also called the "Robin Hood" hat, and it was worn by people hunting, traveling, hawking, etc. It seems to me like it functioned to protect the eyes and direct rain away from the face. I think it fits because the dwarves had a sword in with Mallory, which to me indicates some respect for her running about as a fencer. Additionally, one analysis of women depicted as wearing this hat by R. L. Pisetzky (Storia del Costume in Italia, vol. II, 1964-69) referred to it as a "rude oddity", "masculine/ambiguous", and that women wearing it had a "diabolic essence". The place I found it said this was too harsh, but I find it funny and it reminds me of the reaction the Pooka had to Mallory.
Tumblr media
I may make a foam sword for photos/if I ever wear this to a con, but it's not pressing to me right now (this project will probably take awhile). I do want to make this as wearable as possible so various elements can be worn on their own or in combination with other things, which is why I didn't plan to make a single dress that just looks like two layered on top of each other, and why the over dress with be silver and not white (also I hate sewing white fabrics).

As Nvidia expands in artificial intelligence, Intel defends turf
New Post has been published on http://hosting-df.net/as-nvidia-expands-in-artificial-intelligence-intel-defends-turf/
As Nvidia expands in artificial intelligence, Intel defends turf
(Reuters) – Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) dominates chips for training computers to think like humans, but it faces an entrenched competitor in a major avenue for expansion in the artificial intelligence chip market: Intel Corp (INTC.O).
FILE PHOTO: The logo of Nvidia Corporation is seen during the annual Computex computer exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan May 30, 2017. REUTERS/Tyrone Siu/File Photo
Nvidia chips dominate the AI training chip market, where huge amounts of data help algorithms “learn” a task such how to recognize a human voice, but one of the biggest growth areas in the field will be deploying computers that implement the “learned” tasks. Intel dominates data centers where such tasks are likely to be carried out.
“For the next 18 to 24 months, it’s very hard to envision anyone challenging Nvidia on training,” said Jon Bathgate, analyst and tech sector co-lead at Janus Henderson Investors.
But Intel processors already are widely used for taking a trained artificial intelligence algorithm and putting it to use, for example by scanning incoming audio and translating that into text-based requests, what is called “inference.”
FILE PHOTO: Intel Corp logo is seen behind LED lights in this illustration taken January 5, 2018. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo
Intel’s chips can still work just fine there, especially when paired with huge amounts of memory, said Bruno Fernandez-Ruiz, chief technology officer of Nexar Inc, an Israeli startup using smartphone cameras to try to prevent car collisions.
That market could be bigger than the training market, said Abhinav Davuluri, an analyst at Morningstar, who sees an inference market of $11.8 billion by 2021, versus $8.2 billion for training. Intel estimates that the current market for AI chips is about $2.5 billion, evenly split between inference and training.
Nvidia, which posted an 89 percent rise in profit Thursday, hasn’t given a specific estimate for the inference chip market but CEO Jensen Huang said on an earnings call with analysts on Thursday that believes it “is going to be a very large market for us.”
Nvidia sales of inference chips are rising. In May, the company said it had doubled its shipments of them year-over-year to big data center customers, though it didn’t give a baseline. Earlier this month, Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud unit said it had adopted Nvidia’s inference chips and would rent them out to customers.
But Nvidia faces a headwind selling inference chips because the data center market is blanketed with the CPUs Intel has been selling for 20 years. Intel is working to persuade customers that for both technical and business reasons, they should stick with what they have.
Take Taboola, a New York-based company that helps web publishers recommend related content to readers and that Intel has touted as an example of how its chips remain competitive.
The company uses Nvidia’s training chips to teach its algorithm to learn what to recommend and considered Nvidia’s inference chips to make the recommendations. Speed matters because users leave slow-loading pages.
But Taboola ended up sticking with Intel for reasons of speed and cost, said Ariel Pisetzky, the company’s vice president of information technology.
Nvidia’s chip was far faster, but time spent shuffling data back and forth to the chip negated the gains, Pisetzky said. Second, Intel dispatched engineers to help Taboola tweak its computer code so that the same servers could handle more than twice as many requests.
“My options were, you already have the servers. They’re in the racks,” he said. “Working with Intel, I can now cut back my new server purchases by a factor of two because I can use my existing servers two times better.”
Nvidia has been working to solve those challenges. The company has rolled out software this year to make its inference chips far faster to help overcome the issue of moving data back and forth. And it announced a new family of chips based on a technology called Turing earlier this week that it says will be 10 times faster still, Huang said on the analyst call Thursday.
“We are actively working with just about every single Internet service provider in the world to incorporate inference acceleration into their stack,” Huang said. He gave the example that “voice recognition is only useful if it responds in a relatively short period of time. And our platform is just really, really excellent for that.”

James Zabiela painstakingly utilized 58 tracks across two mixes, deconstructing and blending them together to create an immersive journey into melody that took one year to complete.
https://soundcloud.com/balanceseries/james-zabiela-balance-029-act-1-preview-edit
It seems somehow surprising that it’s only now that James Zabiela enters the fold of Balance’s compilation selectors. A perfect fit for the series, his unfeasibly intricate approach to DJing shines through on this sprawling two-parter, created through a back-and-forth process between his Pioneer DDJ-RZ and Ableton and featuring two exclusive new productions from the man himself.
“My mission statement to myself with this project was that I wanted to make something that was rich and textured,” he explains. “Something the listener could get lost in. Some people know me for my technical noodling but this really had to be about the music, whilst still challenging myself technically. My focus was very heavily on melody and combining songs that would have ‘conversations’ with each other.” Putting this mix together was a long, arduous process that spanned an entire year and coincided with some major incidents in Zabiela’s personal life, imbuing the mix with a sense of emotion and life. “It went from being a ‘just a simple mix CD’ to quite the cathartic exercise with the music that accompanied me. It wasn’t a quick process; neither was it pain free.”
Act 1 begins with gentle electronica like B12’s ‘Untold’ that brings to mind Sasha & Digweed’s classic ‘Northern Exposure’ series — a noted formative influence of Zabiela’s — building to the mesmerising piano crescendos of Grandbrothers’ ‘Bloodflow’. Sad City’s ‘Steady Jam’ puts us in the mind of classic Balearic mixes before we are led into a section of whirring machinery, blissed-out arpeggios and sensual acid via Pye Corner Audio’s ‘Dead Ends’ fusing with HOLOVR’s Into Light. Second Story & Appleblim’srework of Debussy’s majestic ‘Reverie 68’ takes us back to organic tones, with Oddhoody’s ‘The Deep’ switching the rhythm into a taut breakbeat under Kraftwerkian synths. The epic melodies continue as Merrin Karras’ ‘Void’ swells over the metallic percussion of Pev & Kowton’s ‘Junked’ and in the sparse but intensely emotive riffs of Davis’ ‘Plenitude’. The mix takes on a haunting tone with the tortured soul of Ozel AB’s‘Positronic Dreams’ and Courser’s sorrowful ‘Distances’, before Zabiela treats us to one of his stunning exclusive new productions: the delicate vocals and gentle atmospherics of ‘Vines’, created largely with Teenage Engineering’s acclaimed OP-1 synth. A heavenly pairing of AAAA and ARCHITECTURAL builds the mix to a satisfying climax before a sudden halt shocks us back into reality. This ending is intended to mimic the effect of unexpectedly running out of tape in the studio; a subtle reference to the tape loop effects of both ‘Vines’ and AAAA.
Act 2 more closely mirrors the experience of one of Zabiela’s club sets, layered with the additional levels of detail that his meticulous approach and many hours of experimenting afforded him. The sorrowful, bubbling chime arpeggios and indecipherable vocal FX that combine through Goldmund’s ‘Thread’ and Earlham Mystics’ ‘Waters’ set us off in elegiac fashion, but the ravey stabs of KiNK’s Radio Slave remix soon cut through and lead us onto the dancefloor. It’s a dizzying mix that keeps you guessing through, with myriad styles and moods along the way. Elastic acid via another exclusive new track from Zabiela, ‘X-Ray’; the taut metallic breakbeat of Lanark Artefax’s ‘Touch Absence’; the raw ‘90s house of Redlight’s ‘City Jams’ perfectly blending with elements of three other tracks; the ethereal techno of ROD’s ‘Pull’; and a maddening crescendo of warehouse-grade bangers as the mix reaches its most intense peak. The mix ends in blissful, spacey territory after this punchy assault, with the dreamy tones of Paper Dollhouse’s ‘Crayons’ and J.Mono’s Model 500-channeling ‘Sspses’ particularly mesmerising melodic excursions.
His microcosmic approach to mixing creates DJ sets within a DJ set. Take what seems like one track and listen to its constituent parts and it seems like they were destined to be together, such is the perfect harmony he creates between the bones of one track and specific elements of others. “There are many details in this mix that are quite subtle” he says, “and they’re probably things that only I will ever know or care about.” But while you may not notice them consciously, you will definitely feel them.
