153 points and third place in the overall standings Google Pixel 8 Pro was not the best camera phone on the market, according to DxOMark. The portal's authors published their review, where the search giant's new product scored 153 points.  [caption id="attachment_72150" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] The Pixel 8 Pro wasn't the best, but it was able to beat the iPhone 15 Pro Max, albeit only in photo quality. This puts the smartphone in third place. Only the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max and Huawei P60 Pro are ahead. In addition, Google’s new product shares the third stage with the Oppo Find X6 Pro. Google Pixel 7 Pro is slightly lower with a score of 147 points.  If you look in more detail, the Pixel 8 Pro received 155 points for photo quality, which is more than Apple’s flagships. But the video quality, on the contrary, is better on the new iPhones. Additionally, the Pixel 8 Pro appears to have the best ultra-wide camera on the market and takes better outdoor photos in good light.

The younger Pixel 8 does not yet suffer from this problem As you know, the best screens on the smartphone market are now installed on the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8, according to research by DxoMark. However, as it turned out, at least the older Google model has certain problems with this very screen.  [caption id="attachment_71255" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] Pixel 8 Pro owners complain about pink text in AOD mode Some Pixel 8 Pro owners have encountered the fact that the text displayed on the smartphone screen in Always-On Display mode is pink. Of course, it wasn’t intended that way—we’re talking about the problem.  Interestingly, the problem does not affect the entire screen, but only part of it. Most often it appears in the upper corners. There is no such problem with the regular Pixel 8 yet.   Google has not yet responded to the relevant complaints, so it is not yet clear what the nature of the problem is and whether it can be fixed.

So that they are not disappointed in the performance of the SoC Tensor G3 Google has taken a rather unexpected step to ensure that users of the latest Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are not disappointed in the performance of their smartphones: the company has simply banned the installation of popular benchmarks like Geekbench and 3DMark on its new flagships. [caption id="attachment_68767" align="aligncenter" width="771"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] The ban is not absolute, since benchmarks cannot be downloaded only from Google Play, but you can use a third-party marketplace or install them via an APK file. However, the very fact of restricting the freedom of buyers of expensive smartphones does not speak in favor of Google: it is not for the manufacturer to decide what the user installs on his smartphone. The company has banned Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users from installing popular benchmarks Google is proud of the Tensor G3 SoC and calls it its most powerful platform. But in terms of pure performance, it is inferior to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, not to mention the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 looming on the horizon. In reality, the overall performance of the Tensor G3 is approximately at the level of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. To be convinced of this, you don’t even need to install benchmarks – the Internet already has detailed independent tests and comparisons of Google’s new products with other models in all popular benchmarks. [caption id="attachment_68766" align="aligncenter" width="650"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] When talking about the "power" of its SoC, Google focuses on accelerating AI tasks, while Geekbench measures overall performance and 3DMark focuses on measuring graphics performance. In both cases, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have nothing to brag about.

But soon there will be more smartphones with Samsung E7 screens Yesterday we wrote that Google’s newest flagships – Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 – topped the DxOMark “screen” rating. And today it became clear why the new products performed so well in tests: it turned out that Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 became the world’s first smartphones with the latest Samsung E7 panel. Data about this is contained in the source code of the Google Pixel software. [caption id="attachment_68744" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8[/caption] News October 14, 2023 Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 are the world's first smartphones to feature Samsung's latest OLED panel The current generation of flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Pro are equipped with Samsung E6 OLED screens, and the new generation of devices will switch to E7 panels - the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. This will happen quite soon (the premiere of the Xiaomi 14 line is expected on October 27 ), and it’s not a fact that after the release of the new flagships, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 will continue to lead in the DxOMark “screen” rating.

They were brothers, but not twins Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones support face unlock. Even though both only have a single front-facing camera, Google says that thanks to AI and the power of Tensor G3, the new Pixel's Face Unlock feature is very secure and compliant with Class 3, which is the highest level of biometric security in Android. However, perhaps the reality is somewhat less rosy. [caption id="attachment_66970" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 and 8 Pro[/caption] One of the first owners of the Pixel 8 Pro said on Reddit that his brother was able to unlock his smartphone, more than once. At the same time, the author notes that he and his brother are not twins. Interestingly, when the brothers tried the same trick on the Pixel 7 Pro, they didn’t succeed. Is face unlock on the new Pixel 8 and 8 Pro not as good as Google claimed? Of course, one case is not yet indicative. For example, we can recall many similar cases during the advent of Apple Face ID. Perhaps Google will improve the software and everything will get better. However, if not, this could be a problem. That's because Class 3 means the new face unlock can be used for payment authentication, as well as login verification and other areas where biometrics can be used. And here such system errors are definitely unacceptable.

But the new iPhone has harder glass Google Pixel 8 Pro was in the hands of blogger JerryRigEverything and felt all the standard bullying from the author.  [caption id="attachment_66860" align="aligncenter" width="780"] iPhone 15 Pro Max[/caption] Given the unusually hard glass in the new iPhones, it's worth noting that the new Pixel doesn't have any, meaning that the material, which measures 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, leaves some pretty obvious scratches on the protective glass.  Google Pixel 8 Pro turns out to be stronger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and easily passes the JerryRigEverything test https://youtu.be/BnPFaT1ZaNI But the bending test of the new Google product passed perfectly: with the application of force, the smartphone practically does not bend. Compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, whose back glass easily broke in the same test, the Pixel 8 Pro looks more durable.

Because it is not supported by SoC Tensor G3 The new Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones do not support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Because the Tensor G3 SoC does not have such support.  [caption id="attachment_65783" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] The authors of Android Authority say that Google personally confirmed this to them. Our colleagues also tried to run the In Vitro tests from Basemark and Solar Bay from 3DMark, which are designed to determine performance with ray tracing effects, but the tests did not run on Google’s new products.  New Google products do not support ray tracing The Tensor G3 is based on the Mali-G715 graphics core, which does not contain blocks for accelerating ray tracing or they are disabled. For comparison: the Immortalis-G715, based on the same architecture, supports tracing.  Let us remind you that tracing is supported by SoC Exynos 2200, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Dimensity 9200, and Apple A17 Pro. That is all current platforms for flagship smartphones. Thus, the new Pixels lag behind all competitors in this regard. However, ray tracing is still not used in games for smartphones.

APK file appeared Earlier this month, Google introduced two new flagship smartphones - Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. They include a host of new features and software updates, most notably the Google Camera 9.1 camera app. Google Camera v9.1 APK file with a new user interface, different controls, new Ultra HDR+, and other features can already be downloaded online. The installation file is available to owners of previous generations of Google Pixel smartphones. The new app adds an option called “Rich Colors in Photos.” This option allows the Display P3 format to be used instead of sRGB, allowing devices to capture vibrant, wide-gamut JPEG color images, all without the need for 10-bit HDR. [caption id="attachment_64887" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] The latest Google Camera 9.1 Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have already leaked online Plus, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are the first Android phones to take Ultra HDR photos. This is an innovative feature exclusive to Pixel devices. Ultra HDR+ helps photos look better by bringing out colors, highlights, and shadows. Images in this format are fully displayed on devices with an HDR display. But the Ultra HDR format is backward compatible with SDR, so those with older or simpler smartphones and computers will see a regular JPEG. Also in the Google Camera v9.1 application, a new design of quick settings is presented, which is called up by swiping up, as well as an updated menu of brightness controls, shadows, white balance, and other parameters.

What about the clock, Google? The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, among other things, were surprising in that the company announced seven years of OS updates for them. Even Apple doesn’t offer this, and just a few years ago, at best, an Android smartphone could count on two years of updates. Due to this move by Google, questions arose regarding the availability of spare parts. Fortunately, here the company also does everything for the convenience of users: there will be spare parts. [caption id="attachment_64057" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] Spare parts for Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will be available during the seven years that smartphones In an interview with Android Authority, Google's director of product management, Soniya Jobanputra, confirmed that the company will continue to produce spare parts for these smartphones for the next seven years. Spare parts will be available for seven years. This is part of our commitment as we approach our seven-year commitment to making our parts available so you can keep your equipment running during that time. Let's remember that Google also announced cooperation with iFixit to make the new Pixel more repairable. We can only hope that the company will take a similar approach to the relatively new Pixel Watch 2 since Google simply refuses to repair the first ones.

It's a long way from Gen 2 The Tensor G3 single-chip system, which underlies the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones, has passed 3DMark Wild Life tests, which demonstrates not only the performance of the SoC but also the level of throttling.  [caption id="attachment_64038" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] In the test, the older and younger models scored 8572 and 8216 points, respectively. After 20 testing cycles, performance dropped by almost half. The stability indicator was in the same order of 58.7% and 52.5%.   GPU in Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro The new SoC is reportedly produced using a 4 nm process technology, but not the most modern one. This is a Samsung 4LPP, although it could have been 4LPP+, which would have made the platform more energy-efficient. However, the stability indicator is also very low due to the lack of any efficient cooling system in Google smartphones.  As for GPU performance itself, we can recall that last year’s Pixel scored about 6500 points in the same test, about the same as the Exynos 2200 and Dimensity 8200 show. The same Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 already scores 7500–8000 points and higher, depending on the smartphone, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 shows a result of at least about 10,000 points.   That is, the new Google platform is noticeably faster than last year’s, but overall this is the level of Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 in good performance.

Coming this winter Google today presented its new smartphones Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, but, as usual, not only the devices themselves are interesting, but also the software solutions. One of them is Video Boost. [caption id="attachment_63707" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] This function is worth special attention since it is implemented unusually, and the effect should be a very impressive one. As you can see, video quality with Video Boost should be much higher than that of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Moreover, it is higher in many directions at once: better detail, wider dynamic range, and higher contrast. At least according to Google's presentation. The Pixel 8 Pro shoots video, and then artificial intelligence in Google's data center improves it. https://youtu.be/1-QZS3aGCkQ But it's not that simple. If you just take the Pixel 8 Pro and shoot a video with it, it won't be as impressive. What exactly is unclear, since Google, unfortunately, did not show a comparison of regular video and video with Video Boost processing, but there will be a difference. The bottom line is that Video Boost is actually the processing of video shot on a smartphone using artificial intelligence, and after the video has been shot and not even using the capabilities of the smartphone itself. The video will need to be uploaded to Google Photo, where the search giant's data center will handle processing. As Google itself says, Video Boost combines Tensor G3 with powerful data centers to apply the latest processing technologies to video. The feature adjusts color, lighting, stabilization, and grain, resulting in stunning videos that look realistic. As a result, the smartphone will later notify the user that his video is ready, and the improved version will replace the original. Is it fair to say that the Pixel 8 Pro in this case shoots video better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max? It’s an open question. But the solution itself is unique and very unusual. It also shows how heavily software-dependent the photo and video capabilities of smartphones have become in recent years. By the way, the function, firstly, will be available only on the Pixel 8 Pro, and secondly, it will not be available immediately from the moment the smartphone enters the market, but will be released later this winter.

At least on Geekbench Pixel smartphones based on Tesnor SoC do not have any high performance in benchmarks or games, but the new generation will be noticeably better. At least the processor part, judging by Geekbench. [caption id="attachment_63312" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] Pixel 8 Pro turned out to be significantly more powerful than its predecessor The Pixel 8 Pro with its Tensor G3 SoC was tested and scored 1760 and 4442 points in single-threaded and multi-threaded modes, respectively. For comparison, the Pixel 7 Pro scores around 1450 and 3800 points, which is a very noticeable increase. Of course, the new Google platform is very far from the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with its 2000 and 5500 points, and the new Pixels will compete with devices based on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but still, the increase cannot be ignored. It is still unclear whether the GPU will have an equally noticeable increase.

Tensor G3 parameters revealed this time The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones have appeared on the Internet more than once in one form or another. Now the author of the This is Tech Today channel has published a video with a short unboxing of two new products, as well as screenshots where you can see the parameters of the SoC Tensor G3. [caption id="attachment_62254" align="aligncenter" width="310"] Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] Nine processor cores, but with reduced frequencies. Pixel 8 Pro appeared in new leaks The platform includes a nine-core CPU, which is quite unusual. The configuration includes one Cortex-X3 super core with a frequency of 2.91 GHz, four Cortex-A715 cores with a frequency of 2.37 GHz, and four Cortex-A510 with a frequency of 1.7 GHz. It should be noted that the frequencies of these cores are lower than those of many other modern SoCs. The presence of the Mali-G715 GPU is also confirmed, but its configuration is unknown. The software also indicates a minimum amount of flash memory of 128 GB, of which 106 GB will be available to the user. https://youtu.be/zLSoqFCj9RU Let us remind you that yesterday the Pixel 8 Pro appeared on Geekbench, where it showed itself much better than its predecessor, but the performance is still far from current flagships.

Sizes, colors, cameras, etc. Well-known insider Evan Blass published a comparison table with the parameters of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It looks like the table was taken from Google's website or its presentation materials for the announcement of new smartphones. [caption id="attachment_61716" align="aligncenter" width="428"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] Not all the characteristics are there, but you can see that all the latest leaks have been confirmed. The new smartphones will receive SoC Tensor G3, IP68 water protection, and 50-megapixel main cameras, and the Pixel 8 Pro will be able to measure temperature. Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were declassified before the announcement. Also, the older model will receive an ultra-wide-angle camera with a resolution of 48 megapixels with autofocus (for the Pixel 8 it will be 12 megapixels) and a telephoto camera with a resolution of 48 megapixels with five times optical and 30 times hybrid zoom. The older model will be available in black, blue, and beige, and the younger model in black, gold, and gray-green. [caption id="attachment_61719" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] There are also images of the new Pixel Watch 2, but there are no specifications listed for them. Evan Bless is a reliable informant; he has previously made numerous true leaks. So, at one time he published exact images of Sony Xperia 5 II, Galaxy Note20, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Watch 3, and Samsung Galaxy Buds Live before their official premiere.

The OS will probably be updated for five years The upcoming Google Pixel smartphones could set a new standard in terms of manufacturer support. According to recent data, the search giant will offer seven years of updates for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, up from the current five. No one has been offering Android smartphones for seven years on the market. True, it will probably be about five years of OS updates and two additional years of security updates, but this is still more than anyone else. [caption id="attachment_59877" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro[/caption] Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will receive seven years of updates In this case, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which will launch with Android 14, will end up with at least Android 19. The information was shared by Kamila Wojciechowska, who revealed details about the Pixel 7a last fall (support for a frame rate of 90 Hz, wireless charging, and a new camera), which were later fully confirmed.
