🌿 Nourish & Grow: Feed your Calathea with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring & summer). 🧼 Keep it Clean: Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to maintain their glossy appearance and aid in photosynthesis. 🚫 Toxic Temptations: Keep away from pets and curious little hands, as Calatheas can be mildly toxic if ingested. ⏳ Time to Rest: Calatheas like their beauty sleep! They fold up their leaves at night, so don’t disturb them. Remember, each Calathea has its unique quirks – observe your plant closely and adjust care as needed. Happy Calathea keeping! 🌱How do you care for your dramatic plants at home? 🤭🪴 #plantsoftiktok #calathea #indoorplants #planttip #planterpot #planttips #calatheacare

Coffee plant 2.0! Well I guess coffee plants. There are a lot of coffee trees in this one little pot. They need to replant separately before they choke each other out. Once we do that hopefully at least one of them will survive, and hopefully they survive while they wait to be transplanted.

10 Lessons I’ve Learned From My Houseplants: a PSA to anyone who thinks they can’t keep plants alive
Mix hydrogen peroxide into the water you give them! I mix it into the watering can and typically use approximatly 2tsps hydrogen peroxide per 36oz of water. It kills off pests in the soil and will help prevent root rot if you accidentally over water. It also adds more oxygen to the water, and plants really need that! And use room temperature water unless you know for sure a plant likes cold water. For most plants, water that is too hot or too cold will send it into shock and can kill it.
Bottom water bottom water bottom water. Place the plant in a bowl or tray and then pour water into the bowl. The plant will only soak up what it needs, and when the top of the soil barely damp it’s got enough! It also helps keep the soil from compacting which allows air to get to the roots, which helps prevent root rot and gives the plant the oxygen it needs.
If you think it’s thirsty, feel the leaves. The best way to tell if a plant needs water is by checking its leaves. Get to know what the leaves feel like when you first buy it, as it is probably well watered. When you feel it’s been long enough between waterings check the leaves. Does it feel normal? Good, it doesn’t need water for now! Does it feel easily bendable, thinner, softer, or squishier than normal? Give it some water! Remember that it is easier for a plant to come back from being UNDER watered than over watered. If you feel unsure, give it another day or two.
If you still think it’s thirsty after feeling its leaves, feel the soil. Stick your finger down into the soil about 1-2 inches. If the dirt feels wet or damp don’t water it! Wait until the soil is dry 2-3 inches down. (This does not apply to succulents and cacti. Typically wait for the soil to be dry all the way through and leave it dry until the plant shows signs of thirst.
Baby plants are WAY harder to care for than larger plants because they do not have much of an established root system. Its best if you try bigger plants when first starting out (4-6in pots) because they will be more forgiving of mistakes.
Light! Light is one of the most important things to a plant, that’s how they get their energy! Look up the light conditions for a plant BEFORE you buy it, (even if its just a quick google in the store) so you know if you have the right lighting for it. You can do everything right with watering and caring for a plant but if its in the wrong light it will die.
Higher humidity is more important in the winter than in the summer (unless it is a plant that needs a lot of humidity like a fern). While you may not have to worry about humidity in the summer, using a heater in the winter dries out the air in your home very fast. If possible get a small humidifier for your plants. You don’t need anything fancy, I have a $10 one from Target and it does the job fine.
Don’t worry if your plants stop growing in the winter, just like trees loose their leaves, plants go into hibernation too and do not produce as much new growth. During these cold winter months (and spring… and fall….) don’t water as often. Since they don’t grow as much, they don’t need near as much water. Do not use fertilizer during this period either, the plant does not need it and more than likely the fertilizer will just burn the plant’s roots since it won’t absorb it.
Try to give them individual love and attention. Pet their leaves! Give them lil kissies! Play nice music for them! The best way to care for a plant is to learn what it wants individually. Name them if this helps and don’t treat them all the same! Learning what each plant wants is the most rewarding part of horticulture. You can have two of the exact same plant and they will have different needs, its incredible! Let their little personalities shine through.
Don’t give up if you follow all these and still kill a plant! Plants are hard and sometimes their instinct is to just,,,, die. Don’t trust someone who says they’ve never killed a plant, they’re lying, plants die. Try again and be patient with yourself and your plant friends.

Let’s talk about lemon balm! This is one of my favorite perennial herbs that is so easy to grow indoors and outdoors!
Lemon balm is part of the mint family. It’s native to areas of southern Europe, but has quickly naturalized in many different areas of the U.S. Similar to mint, it will quickly spread and take over a garden so be careful!
Lemon balm has many medicinal uses. The leaves are edible and can be added to teas, salads, soups, etc.
This herb has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, and antihistaminic properties!! 🤯⠀
Lemon balm can help relieve feelings of anxiety, stress, nervousness, and excitability. I brew it into tea for a positive mood boost 💗 Similarly it can also be consumed before bed to calm nerves and help sleep.
Studies have also shown lemon balm to improve different cognitive functions including memory, concentration, alertness, and overall performance.
Lemon balm is also good for digestion, nausea, cramps, stress headaches, tension, and more. Seriously the list could go on and on.
Lemon balm is safe for cats and dogs in small amounts. You can give them 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per serving depending on your pets weight.
Lemon balm will relieve anxiety and stress in pets. You can give it to them in stressful situations like relocating, thunderstorms, or when new people are around.⠀
Lemon balm also fights cancer and helps digestion in pets 😻
I actually found out the medicinal uses for pets because my cat is OBSESSED with lemon balm! She kept getting into it and now I give her leaves often.⠀
Lemon balm will also bloom small white flowers in the summer that honey bees love 🐝💗⠀
This herb prefers full sun to partial shade. Lemon balm is very low maintenance and drought tolerant. It can survive temperatures as low as -20F° !! Water enough to saturate the roots, and allow the soil to dry before watering again. When grown in containers it needs water every day, especially in hot Tennessee summers.
Just like mint, lemon balm is very easy to propagate in water!

Intro Into Plant Life
As many of us are into indoor plants right now I thought I would share with you my stories and what not to-do’s. I’ve been caring for my plants for about 2 years now and I’m certain I am not progressing with those plants at all. So instead of reading yet another article on how to look after plants; I’m sharing with you my knowledge on what not to do.
My plant collection ranges from philodendrons to calathea’s and a bit of everything in between. If you’re new to the plant parent scene I highly suggest you avoid a calathea. Whilst these guys are absolutely stunning, that is the trick to lure you in. My parents (and I’m sure everyone else’s parents too) told me never to get into a strangers’ car; no matter if they know your name or have lollies to lure you in. Calathea’s are the stranger in the car. Just don’t do it; no matter how experienced you think you might be; no matter how committed you think you are, just don’t go there.
What’s wrong with a calathea? Let’s just say I don’t name my plants unless they’re dying. Why? Because I don’t want my neighbours to know I’m yelling at my plants when they’re dying. It sounds much better if it sounds like I’m yelling at someone. Sometimes I like to see their reactions when I have baby plants and I pretend to be a young mum struggling to keep her children alive. To an extent, it’s true. I’m a young mum struggling to keep her plant babies alive; they don’t need to know that though.
Ok they’re hard but what else? Unless you’re Harry Potter, you will never know what it wants from you. You will never keep them alive. Everyone will tell you they like humidity and they don’t like direct sunlight, therefore, I’ve placed them in multiple locations. The bathroom, the back patio (which is undercover), the bedroom, the dining room, the lounge room. Short of putting it in the kitchen and setting it on fire, the lil’ bitch does not like to live anywhere in my home.
Calathea’s will trick you into thinking you’re a great plant mum. The calathea’s I had were on death row. Then they all started to grow babies! Like a lot of babies! I thought I had finally figured the sorcery out. I was keeping them alive and they were actually growing. This is a lie. Do not make the novice mistake I did. Here I am thinking I’m the best plant mum out, I head off to my local Bunnings. I see a calathea zebrina on discount because its dying. Being the advanced caregiver I think I am, I make the stupid decision to purchase the dying plant thinking I can bring it back from the dead like I did with the ones I had at home. I thought I’d picked up a bargain. How wrong I was. I totally wasted my money! I could have bought myself a cold drink for the same amount of money I wasted on that arsehole!
From memory, the zebrina I named Zane died shortly after. I was so infuriated by him that I just decided it was his time. What do you do when you want a calathea to die? Put it outside of course. In the sun. I put him outside out of sight so that I never had to look at him again. I definitely did not want my plant mum instincts to kick in and water him. No, Zane had put me through too much already. It was either me or him and I didn’t want him to encourage his calathea friends to do the same so… Goodbye Zane.
It wasn’t long before the calthea’s I previously thought I’d revived also started to die. This was their revenge on me for putting their friend outside to die. I struggled and I tried so hard to keep them alive but that’s not what they were telling me they wanted. One long stressful day at work and one quick look at my calathea’s; they too, went outside to die. Orbi, Star and Lutsey pushed my buttons to much that day out they went! I don’t need that kind of stress in my life. Either your plants live or they don’t and in this case, the bastards decided they do not want to live up to the pretty pictures you see online. What a waste of money! The worst part? Since caring for these arseholes I’ve found grey hairs.
Moral of the story; do not buy a calathea. If someone gives you one you give that thing right back. You don’t want these Debbie downers to talk to your other plants and convince them to go to the dark side. Just don’t bother wasting your time or money or happiness on these plants when you can go and buy yourself a cold drink or maybe even lunch. Put yourself first for a change. Buy that top you’ve had your eye on for months. Go get that monstera you’ve been meaning to buy. Literally do anything else; just don’t buy or adopt a calathea!
If after reading this you think you can still keep one alive, don’t come crying back to me when I told you so. Or if you can keep it alive, I dare you to prove it. Nothing on this earth is going to make me want to buy another one of those plants from hell.
