My one plant rule was “no calatheas” but I got a calathea. Now, in all fairness, it was $3 and was on the sale table outside. So if it dies I feel like I can blame it on that
My baby!! I've grown this Alocasia for about 4 years. She was super bushy and full, before I commit the mistake of repotting her into a bigger pot. The main problem was that the new pot was ceramic and she was previously in a clay pot. Remember that the pot material influences how soon the soil will dry? Yeah, I didn't put a lot of attention and ended up overwatering her! 🥹 She started losing leaves, but it was the winter months, so assume if was the regular slow time where it loses almost all leaves. Then, I was alerted when she only had one leaf left. I decided to check the rots, and realized how wet the soil was on the centrer and bottom of the pot.
Clean the roots up, added some honey 🍯 (rotting hormone) and potted into a smaller plastic pot and kept them in the ER AKA Garage Plants! In just a few weeks I got one knew leaf coming out and she continues to recover. The last lead is a pretty good size! 💚

I’ll be studying again soon and I’m excited for it. It may not happen immediately, but I can’t wait to be back in an academic setting where the conversation is electric, intense and intimate. There’s so much to learn and hopefully I can create a life full of time to dedicate to it.
In the meantime, I’m spending a lot of time with my cat and have decided to test how green my thumb is with a Calathea makoyana, which is actually in the genus Goeppertia, not Calathea. Not that I knew that before picking it up at the Volunteer Park Conservatory’s fundraiser plant sale, in fact, I knew nothing about them until two days ago after I brought her home. Wish me luck.
I’m not sure what most of these are but I know I have some burros tails, gollum jade, and the big leaves in the middle might be silver dollar jade (but maybe I’m just being optimistic because that’s a wish list plant for me)
My Hoya's annoying family members are visiting... Mealybugs!
Always practice observation. Check your plant's leaves and stem. Mealybugs love sneaking in your Hoya's. The sooner you find them, the faster and easier it will be to kill them & stop the reproduction cycle.
