Plant of the Day
Saturday 24 June 2023
This Vitis vinifera (grape vine) makes a great feature along this cafe veranda. This woody plant climbs using tendrils and can be pruned annually to remove side shoots back to the main stem. There are many named cultivars selected for edible fruits or for ornamental leaf shapes and colours.

Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula)
Distribution: Native to parts of China and Vietnam; introduced to Japan, South Korea and North America; found mostly in the northeast, but spreading westward and southward.
Habitat: Usually found on its host plants; its preferred host is tree of heaven, but it can also be found on many other plants such as fruit trees, ornamental trees, woody trees and vines.
Diet: Herbivorous; feed on the sap found in the phloem of plants. Besides their preferred host, other common targets include birch, lilac, maple and poplar, as well as important agricultural crops like soybeans, grapes, stonefruit, cherry trees and apple trees.
Description: The spotted lanternfly is very invasive, and is considered a threat to many important agricultural crops. When it feeds, it pierces the bark of its host plant, forming a wound which may cause pathogens to be introduced into the plant. On top of that, spotted lanternflies also produce honeydew, a sugary substance which attracts other pests such as hornets, wasps and ants, and on which can grow mold. It seems to have a preference for plants which contain cytotoxic byproducts, which makes it toxic when eaten.
In its native range, the local lanternfly population is controlled by parasitic wasps. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any important predators outside of its native range due to its toxic properties. On the bright side, the honeydew can serve as a food source for honeybees, which reportedly produces a pleasant change in the flavor of their honey and brings some resistance to parasitic mite infestations.

Spent my morning pruning hour at work on this groundsel bush (a native salt marsh species also known as Baccharis halimifolia) that was covered in porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata), an invasive species of grape. Cherished mutual (of nine years! wow!) @islenskur mentioned not knowing much about the invasive species I work on so here's a little primer for anyone interested.
Porcelainberry is from eastern Asia and was imported to the United States in the late 19th century as an ornamental landscaping plant - it has since gone rogue and is all over the East Coast and has been found as far west as Iowa. The good people of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Virginia said porcelainberry is "the most pervasive of all invasive plants" they are dealing with. It's a woody vine that can grow as tall as 20 ft, can grow in just about any environment include damp and shaded areas, and has a massive root system so it's also incredibly difficult to eradicate. It grows so quickly and so prolifically that it can easily shade out other plants in the understory and it will also easily cover an entire tree and engulf it -- if you find an undisturbed thicket of porcelainberry, it is probably a monoculture as it has killed or outcompeted everything in the area. Furthermore, since it can regrow from root fragments, it cannot be composted. As high risk of an invasive species as it is, porcelainberry is still sold in the horticulture trade, although it has since been banned in Delaware.
Porcelainberry seeds are spread by birds and small mammals like squirrels that eat the small, marble-like berries that form in the summer; they're actually really beautiful and vary in colour from a robin's egg blue to a deep midnight purple. While they are edible, they taste nasty, so if you like bland berries with a somewhat stinging aftertaste and a slimy texture, these are a perfect snack. The leaves are also edible and not disgusting (I've actually used them to make dolmades aka stuffed grapes leaves and the texture was no different than cultivated grape leaves) and they look quite lovely on a cast iron fence -- zoom in on the little tendrils that it uses to cling to itself and other objects to make a lattice and quickly grow upwards. These tendrils are a big tell for identifying porcelainberry in the winter when there are no leaves, as other clinging/climbing vines like Asian bittersweet, English ivy, and poison ivy have different ways of attaching to the trees.
As much as I hate dealing with it, I have to admit that this plant is incredibly good at thriving in adverse conditions.

Edible Landscaping - What Is It, How to Design It and What Plants to Choose:
Edible landscaping refers to mixing food plants in with your ornamental ones, to create a setting that is not only visually appealing, but productive as well. This post will provide suggestions for How to Design It and What Plants to Choose. Edible landscapes are nothing new, with the Ancient Egyptians being one of the first to create gardens featuring flowers, grape vines, and fruit trees, mixed with seating areas where one could enjoy the scenery. In the 10th century, the rose gardens that were sprinkled with fragrant herbs became a signature creation of Benedictine monks. Examples include:
Using different types of loose-leaf lettuce as border plants
Creating a hedge from blueberries or currants, rather than unproductive shrubs
Replacing non-edible trees with fruit trees
Using tomato plants or grape vines, instead of conventional climbing vines to cascade over a trellis
Having pots and baskets of colorful, fragrant herbs, rather than non-edible flowers
Incorporating striking vegetables, such as Swiss chard and pak choi, into flower beds
Using strawberries, thyme and mint as ground cover

The Ultimate Guide to Growing Tomatoes in Europe: Climate, Soil, and Indoor Seed Care
Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables grown across Europe. Originally from South America, tomatoes were brought to Europe in the 16th century by European explorers. However, it took some time for Europeans to warm up to the fruit. Initially, tomatoes were primarily grown for their ornamental value in gardens rather than for consumption. Over the centuries, Europe’s Tomato Seed  gained popularity as a food crop across Europe. Nowadays, countries like Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands are major producers and consumers of tomatoes in the European region. Climate and Soil Requirements for Europe’s Tomato Seed For successful tomato cultivation, it is important to understand the climate and soil requirements. Tomatoes grow best in warm temperatures between 18-30°C. Most parts of Europe experience suitable warm summer months for tomatoes to mature. However, northern regions may require protection from early or late frosts. Tomatoes also need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth. In terms of soil, tomatoes prefer loose, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Heavy clay or soggy soils prone to waterlogging should be avoided. The ideal soil pH range is between 6-7. Soil enrichment with compost or well-rotted manure before planting helps boost fertility. Growing Tomato Seeds Indoors In colder parts of Europe, Europe Tomato Seeds common to start tomato seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected spring frost. This allows seedlings to develop into strong transplants ready to be planted outdoors once temperatures warm up. Sow seeds in seed starter mix in small pots or cell packs. Maintain a temperature of 18-24°C and provide bottom heat if possible. Make sure the soil remains moist but not soggy. Seedlings usually emerge within 7-14 days. Provide adequate sunlight, such as under grow lights. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outside for at least a week. Transplanting and Planting Outdoors When night temperatures remain above 10°C, tomato seedlings can safely be transplanted outdoors. Prepare the planting area by clearing weeds and loosening the top 15cm of soil. Space transplanting 60-90cm apart depending on the variety. Dig holes twice the width and depth of each seedling’s container. Gently remove seedlings by squeezing the sides of the container. Plant at the same soil level the seedling was growing in indoors. Water thoroughly after transplanting and apply a 2-4cm thick layer of mulch around the base of each plant to help retain moisture. Stake or cage tomatoes for support as they grow. Varieties of Tomatoes Grown in Europe Over time, many tomato varieties have been specially bred to thrive under Europe’s Tomato Seed  growing conditions. Some commonly grown varieties include: - Cherry/Grape Tomatoes: Ideal for containers or short seasons. Varieties include 'Sugar Lump', 'Tommy Toe' and 'Sweet 100'. - Plum Tomatoes: Excellent for sauces and canning. Try 'Romantica', 'San Marzano' and 'Gianni'. - Beefsteak Tomatoes: Large slicing tomatoes great for meals. Favorites are 'Ace 55', 'Super Steak' and 'Brandywine'. - Heirloom Tomatoes: Unique flavors and history. Popular kinds are 'Green Zebra', 'Black Krim' and 'Cherokee Purple'. - Cherry on the Vine Tomatoes: Long clusters of cherry tomatoes remain attached to the vine for easy picking. 'Sungold' is a top choice. Common Pests and Diseases of Tomatoes in Europe Unfortunately, tomatoes do face some pest and disease issues in European gardens that growers need to watch out for: - Tomato Hornworms: Large green caterpillars defoliate plants. Handpick and destroy.

Chinese wisteria, a species of Wisterias
Also known as:
•Cooke's Purple Wisteria
• Wisteria
• Purple wisteria
Botanical name: Wisteria sinensis
Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is a common ornamental vine in temperate regions, known for its rich, pendulous clusters of purple flowers. The flowers are very fragrant and have a scent similar to grapes. This plant is a beautiful addition to your spring garden, but be aware - all parts of chinese wisteria are toxic when ingested.Chinese wisteria
This plant climbs and spreads by winding counterclockwise. Its flowers hang on branches like animal tails. It is native to China. sinensis means that it is associated with China. Wisteria is called Chinese wisteria in memory of Dr. Caspar Wistar.Purple wisteria
The name, purple is given not only because some of its species have purple flowers, but also because its flowers have a similar aroma to grapes. After all, people always associate purple with purple grapes, so it is called purple wisteria.
There is a beautiful love story about chinese wisteria . It is said that a girl in purple and a boy in white jumped off a cliff because they couldn't get their family's consent for marriage. Chinese wisteria grew on the cliff, white within purple, and as bright as the clouds.

Sam, Ba, and I went to Burnley Gardens. They are spacious and delightfully biodiverse. They had some very old and healthy trees notably cypress, magnolia, cedar, and oak. There was an abundance of dragonflies and a variety of bees, which is a good sign. The rose garden was less developed than some of the other botanical gardens I’ve seen, but nevertheless a decent attempt that with dedication could grow to excellence. I was excited to see Luffman’s lotus ponds, as I’ve never seen such a construction before, I was taken with the remains and rebirth of a large fragile willow tree. There were lots of minor meandering paths leading to secluded nooks among the foliage, as well as an abundance of benches. The gardens do seem to have a fondness and skill with pergolas that I have never seen elsewhere, the structures are solidly built and the vines covering them are healthy and well maintained. Highlights include a green covered marque tunnel in the Sunken Gardens with many large seed pods hanging down and the archway leading to the Rose Garden, a dense grape vine with the largest leaves I’ve ever seen, possibly due to the ornamental nature of the plant. There are some defined areas eg. the native species garden, but for the most part they are unafraid to mix flora types, there were some very good uses of rockery plants and succulents. They had some excellent sedum and crassula groundcover, with few larger cactuses. There were a variety of soil types, from moist shaded spaces growing ferns, to rocky terrain growing small eucalyptus and juniper trees. All in all, a very good trip, I’d love to spend many hours exploring the myriad trails and species in the Burnley Gardens

Spotted lanternfly nymphs look like small beetles, but they will soon grow into destructive pests. Union County, NJ – July 26, 2022 — Union County residents can help fight back against the spotted lanternfly by destroying the destructive pest while it is still in the early stages of growth. The spotted lanternfly is an invasive species that can weaken trees, damage ornamental plants and destroy fruit trees, hops, grape vines and other crops. They also excrete a whitish “honeydew” that can grow moldy and foul outdoor spaces including patios and yard furniture. Each fall the adult spotted lanternfly lays eggs on outdoor surfaces including tree trunks, lawn furniture and vehicles. In early summer, the eggs hatch into nymphs that look like small black or bright red beetles speckled with white spots. Residents who spot the nymphs can use a variety of approved pesticides to kill them. Crushing or swatting them is another option, though they are quick to hop away. “Union County residents and property managers can take action against this destructive pest now, by inspecting yards, gardens and landscaping for the nymphs, and destroying them before they mature,” said Commissioner Chair Rebecca Williams. The nymphs can be seen on many different kinds of plants and trees. They are especially likely to be found clustering on the stems of the common ailanthus tree, or “tree of heaven.” The nymphs mature into large, moth-like adults that can be easily identified by their papery white wings and brightly colored red, black and white underwings and body. Adults are already beginning to emerge. Union County residents who see a spotted lanternfly should kill it immediately, by stomping it under foot. If it hops away, follow it and try again when it settles. The spotted lanternfly belongs to a group of insects called “planthoppers.” They do not bite or sting, and they do not seem toxic to humans or pets.  Native to parts of Southeast Asia, they were first seen in Pennsylvania in six years ago. They are believed to have arrived in shipments of stone. They were first found in New Jersey in 2018 has also been found in other nearby states.
