Today was spent making plaster moulds for my final piece. It’s quite a time consuming process but I think it will be worth it because it means I can make multiple vessels using these moulds. I intend to use paper pulp and air dry clay to make bottles of different heights. The video lags in the middle not sure what that is..technical glitch :/

Today I started making the mould for my puppet head. I set it in clay and smoothed it evenly around the join. I added keys and then mixed up plaster and scooped it onto the sculpt to form the first half of the 2 peice mould. I will make the scond half of the mould on monday!

This room takes my breath away! Interior mouldings, namely plaster cornices, coving and ceiling roses, are an art form we unfortunately don't see much of anymore. Plaster work from the Victorian and Georgian eras were by far the most ornate, including ribbons and swags, ceiling roses (decoration around a ceiling light fixture) and flowers. The most ornate mouldings in a home were always found in areas most seen by visitors as they were meant to impress! I especially love the juxtaposition of the old with the new in this photo. At the Hyde Park Mouldings workshop, we’ve developed something of a “green thumb” this year; augmenting our normal production of #plastermouldings with tomatoes, basil, peppers, eggplants and cucumbers. (at Hyde Park Mouldings)

Today we learnt how to make studio plaster moulds of our head casts. I started by using water based clay to prop up the head face up to section it off as the first section of this 3 part mould, i pressed the end of a tool into the clay to make keys, to ensure the mould would fit together securely when casting. 

I then mixed up some casting plaster, waited for it to start to turn enough for me to scoop it onto the face. Plaster is A thixotropic fluid so is thick when still but becomes runny when agitated. So to capture the fine detail the first handful placed on is shaken a little to let it become liquid and flood into all the fine detail. The rest of the plaster is put on in handfuls and smoothed over, I agitated it at the end to create a flat plane to rest the mould on later. 

Once it was cured I turned it over and removed the clay. I then used the clay to build a wall to separate the head in half, I used paint to mark the edge of the first piece of the mould and painted slip on the exposed plaster to act as a release agent. I then repeated the plaster process to complete the second part of the mould. 

To finish the mould I simply repeated the process for the final section to be opened tomorrow.
