Four exquisitely crafted monologues from writer Peter Barnes (The Ruling Class) performed by four of our leading actors - Jon Culshaw, Matthew Kelly, Jemma Redgrave and Adrian Scarborough - filmed on stage at the Theatre Royal Windsor in 2021.

Each of these wonderful solo performances presents and explores a different character, with Barnes' unique wit and humanity throughout, bringing them to life for a unique glimpse into the complexities of the human experience.

Bucky started prowling towards you when you were finishing up, twirling his knife through his fingers and running his tongue over his bottom lip when you hefted the gun one last time before resting it across your lap. You leaned back and gave him a wicked grin as you ran your hands over your weapon, eyeing the way the knife spun through his fingers and rolling your hips just a little in a way that had him ready to pounce on you.

“You gonna check my work, Barnes?” You bit your lip like a damn tease when he came to a stop in front of you, blinking slowly at him before you let your gaze drop to where his cock was straining against the front of his tactical pants.

Well who am I to deny the people what they want?? Sorry for the slight delay, I had to make myself dinner. As usual summary under the cut!

Okay so it starts with Clyde going to Theo's barn/church and taking all of the important stuff like the alien dragonfruit then burnt it down. It was Very Dramatic and they panned in on his snakeskin boots.

Maria tried to do a seance with Alex's Air Force sweatshirt (???) which OBVIOUSLY didn't work. Liz showed up and so did Rosa who said she was going to help Maria figure out what's going on with Alex. She also said this brilliant line that made no fucking sense but whatever.

Then Liz went home and had a brief moment with Max where they didn't really say anything new. Just continue to be utterly wrong for each other. He said that Bonnie and Dallas were missing and she was like oh so is Alex! And he was like oh shit Michael is going to lose it and she convinced him not to tell him for some fucking reason.

I don't remember what Michael and Max were doing...I think looking for Bonnie and Dallas? But whatever, then Michael went out to the desert for his search and lo bumped into Rosa and Maria and overheard them saying Alex was missing. And his reaction was meh lol

Michael lost his shit on Maria saying why would Alex be trying to contact her over him??? And how dare they keep this from him etc etc it was very nice and very cathartic. Then he went to the sheriff's office and punched Max, which was literally the best thing that has ever happened in this gd show. They got into a big scuffle before Max head locked him and Michael was like I walked through literal fire to save Liz Ortecho for you and you thought you could keep this from me?? And Max was like it was Liz's idea! Because he's an upstanding guy like that and takes the fall for his gf 🤪

Then he stomped off to his lair where Liz found him and he told her off too. But she had the antidote for his powers so he forgave her very quickly and also gave her advice with Max because it's ALLLL about the hets!

He quickly apologized to everyone for what he said which he absolutely did not need to do. His anger was justified and they cheapened it with his apologies but whatever.

At the Pony, the piano started playing Will You Come Home so then Michael started strumming the guitar along with him. Alex used lights to guide him, Rosa, and Maria to where he was quicksanded and Michael was ready to jump in to save him but then Max appeared out of nowhere and was like no! So he didn't. Also Maria can see like cosmos or something in the quicksand but who fucking cares why.

Alex going missing again would be so much more interesting if we got to see Michael worrying, and thinking that maybe he’s being too clingy and talking about it with everyone else at different times and then finally going to Kyle and Kyle validating that this is Not Like Alex and yes Michael should be worried. I think that would be a great bonding moment for them and I’m holding out hope we get Michael and Kyle working together to find Alex since they’re the only ones we’ve gotten to see actually care about Alex as a person. But still, totally ignoring Alex and not allowing that worry to build up over a couple of episodes is just like, such a dumb choice. This show continues to set up emotional beats the size of a fucking barn and then proceed to somehow entirely miss hitting them.

This leads to my next point that having Michael being worried about Alex missing and hoping to get some answers from the new aliens which we already know he wants to do is a MUCH better set up for Michael going to talk to Bonnie at the bar than...whatever that mess was. Like, women can’t just take themselves out to a bar and taste test drinks without it being a symptom that something is deeply wrong? Let women be! Let women drink alone! It’s not a crime! 🤬 ANYWAY, that was the dumbest set up when they establish that Michael already wants to talk to these newcomers first instead of just assuming the worst. Whyyyyy go with some weird savior complex thing that Michael apparently needs to guide lost souls or something and that being tied to a woman just living her life? If they want to go the “Michael and a mentor” route it should be with Alex and them working with foster kids and struggling teens because THAT’s actually important to both of them. Deciding for yourself that someone having a couple drinks alone must be in crisis is a weird stance for this show to take given that they brought up Rosa’s drinking and substance abuse issues, tied them to mental health issues Liz specifically worries about having as well, and then spends the rest of the show with Liz almost always having a drink in her hand, smoking with m*ria, and having Rosa spend 90% of last season hanging out in a bar. Just saying...

While we’re talking about Michael and Alex, can we talk about the show constantly taking important things to them and giving scenes about them to other people? We already had Echo using the “cosmic” line last season, but mostly I’m currently focused on the show establishing in season 1 that music and the guitar is tied to Malex with the picture in the pilot episode, Michael stealing Alex’s guitar then Alex giving him one in 1x06, and then Jesse breaking Michael’s hand so he can’t play anymore, only for ever other moment of Michael and the guitar to be with someone other than Alex. Like WHYYYYY?? HOW does this show constantly undercut it’s own narrative?! We have been begging to see Michael playing guitar again since season 1 when they for some reason decided he needed to play for fucking m*ria while Alex was waiting for him, and now he’s played TWICE in this episode and both times were NOT with Alex, and NOT with Alex there to at least SEE it and give Michael heart eyes about it. It’s RIDICULOUS. (This shade is not directed at Bonnie, it’s not her fault the writers room is a mess and otherwise the scene made sense and was sweet. But STILL. 😤)

Apparently at least both Dallas and Liz agreed with Michael’s plan, but god forbid anyone stand up for Michael to Max’s face in front of the group 🙄 and to make it worse, Michael’s plan was good and Max’s worry was because he’s having issues with his powers. That is NOT a reason to lash out at MICHAEL about a GOOD PLAN just because he doesn’t think he’ll be able to help if things go wrong. Maybe telling everyone about that issue would have allowed Michael to rework the plan a bit to make Max feel more comfortable about it. But we are once again having Max hiding what is going on with him and his powers from Michael, Isobel, and Liz because we see him tell her for the first time when it’s made clear he’s been struggling for the last 6 months since Jones died.

Given that this is the last season I was already tired of wasting time for Kybel but I am REALLY, REALLY over this “intrepid reporter” narrative and I am side-eyeing Chris HARD for saying “what happens when you have two good choices” and immediately showing us Anatsa getting someone drunk and probing them for information that clearly could get them in trouble with their work. Like, everyone knows you can’t comment on an open investigation? I’m not saying Anatsa is totally at fault because clearly this lady does not take her job seriously  but that whole scene was SO uncomfortable and SUCH a waste of time. We had to spend time with Kyle meeting this woman, and then MULTIPLE scenes of them together at this winery, just for Anatsa to see the video of the bank robbery? They couldn’t have had it leaked or something? Or had her and Isobel waiting for Max at the Sheriff’s office for something and Isobel stepping away and Anatsa seeing the view queued up on his computer? Still shady of her but more palatable to watch and not a giant waste of multiple scenes just to get to that point. GOD Kyle deserves SO MUCH BETTER than being stuck in all these scenes with these rando women just to get to some tiny plot point in the most convoluted way possible. We already did this in season 2 like STOOOOOP. Kyle deserves better and him and Isobel deserve more than a half-assed love story thrown together in a few episodes at the end of the season.

I get that Anatsa is going to keep digging and Isobel wants to be around to try and keep her from finding out anything because she isn’t sure if she can trust Anatsa with their secret but is guilty about dating her and keeping secrets and dating her after doing the mind whammy to keep Anatsa off the trail for a night, with the implication that it’s going to keep happening since Anatsa won’t let this go. There’s also the implication that the guilt is related to using her mind powers on someone Isobel is in an ongoing relationship with because it’s similar to Noah controlling her in their relationship. SO I’m still not sure why Isobel wouldn’t break up with Anatsa and then do what she did with Liz and send her away. She might not feel great about it, but it WOULD keep Anatsa safe as well as all of the aliens and the people who help them safe, and wouldn’t be Isobel keeping everyone safe by constantly messing around in her gf’s mind to keep her out of things. This could have happened last season or in 4x01 and allowed the rest of the season to explore Kybel without both of them being paired off with other people. I’m just tired of another pointless love triangle when Isobel working through what a “destined soulmates” relationship would mean after Noah, if she feels trapped by that idea and give us some great moments of him just causally respecting her autonomy and without even trying, proving that he’s not Noah. We might get some of this but it’s not going to be the epic build up both of those characters deserve and undercuts the “alien soulmates” mythology the show introduced in the first episode. 

I’m not a scientist but that whole scene with the ENORMOUS bit of skin that’s somehow THAT BIG and solidly flat, but not like, an actual chuck of bloody skin you would get if you actually ripped off a bit of yourself on a cactus was a bit too much suspension of disbelief for the show to ask of me right now. 

Also, I want to care about Shivani’s plight with her daughter, but this is like, the umpteenth time we’re doing the “person has been working to save someone sick and dying by researching alien stuff” and I’m tired. 

Which, speaking of, how have we not heard about Heath in 3 episodes when his whole thing last season was “become a brilliant scientist to save my best friend since childhood, Dallas”? And having Dallas say these new people he just met 6 months ago are all he has was....such a slap in the face. And since Dallas was apparently also dying last season, is he not also getting the same treatment m*ria is that took away her powers? Or was he magically healed in some way that they couldn’t do for m*ria? What about Mimi? Did they try the treatment on her too? Who knows! Not us, they just had to invent yet another reason for m*ria to be in the middle of things because her character has actually served no purpose beyond the planned relationship with Michael as an obstacle for Malex to overcome.

Annnnd here’s were we get to the REAL salt about this episode. 

I am literally BEGGING the show to not give Dallas the Gregory Manes treatment and make him pant after m*ria for the rest of the season instead of bonding with his triad, letting Michael be there for him as a support system (since Heath apparently fucked off to who knows where) like he’s been for Michael, and maybe getting to have scenes with Alex. But already this episode we saw that instead of Dallas working with his bestie Michael to help with the new aliens since he's understanding and supportive of Michael's plan, or helping Max and Jenna because he's great with people and getting them to talk to him like we saw with the homeless man last episode and with Graham Green, he's shifting to being the one getting stuck trying to make m*ria likable and relevant to the plot this season 🙄

They had to go back and retcon her having alien heritage to give her something to do, and now Mimi has been almost entirely forgotten by the narrative (was she even IN last season?) while they invented a grandparent with ties to Caulfield and now supposedly having all these alien artifacts but it would make far MORE sense for that to have been Alex or Kyle’s storyline! Both their dad’s worked at Caulfield far more recently, Jim was already confirmed to have been taking shit and giving it to Eduardo over at Deep Sky (but don’t forget, that organization does NOT  know about aliens 🙄), or it could have been something Tripp took to help Norah before he was killed. So once again, Kyle and Alex and a sensible narrative are being pushed out of the way to wedge her into the story because they have too many characters and have never known what to do with her.

And look, I know I hate on m*ria but it’s so telling that they never knew what to do with her so she’s always stuck with the guest star characters to work with instead of ever being able to work with Liz her supposed BFF after season 1, or share scenes with Rosa after season 1 made it seem like she was closer to Rosa than Liz. Or they try to pair her up with Alex or Michael while refusing to address what she did to them, and hoping the audience just forgets about that, or the way she talks down to Michael and forces both of them to also praise her for being sooo wonderful. It’s sickening.

The show is also continuing to push the narrative that she’s a “saint” while actively showing us a person doing bad things and being a bad friend! I made a post about it already but the absolute tone deaf writing to have her steal medical supplies from the go-bag of a working doctor and then not be able to think of a single bad thing she might have ever done, ever is BEYOND ridiculous. You would think after ruining Greg from the sweet teacher he was and refusing to let him have scenes with his brother Alex which was 90% of why people fell in love with him (the rest was his heart eyes with Isobel which would ALSO have been a great story to explore) in order to prop up m*ria, that the writers would have learned their lesson. Here’s hoping they don’t sacrifice the Dallas we know and love and his beautiful relationship with Michael to the alter for Saint m*ria. But given what we saw in the 4x05 synopsis, I’m not holding my breath.

Just like last season, we NEED more information and more time for important things and conversations to happen on screen so why are we again wasting time propping up m*ria as a character when she’s STILL doing none of the things they keep praising her for (like being selfless, being “too hard on herself” or being any kind of good friend in any capacity), and is AGAIN, actively being the opposite of those things? Every time I start to get sad this show is ending, we get scenes like this that remind me this show will NEVER live up to the potential is has because they will always sacrifice the better and more logical story and emotional beats to cater to a character they made superfluous from the start.

Okay folks, that’s about all I have the energy for. But here’s your salty reminder that Alex is in a hole somewhere out in the desert and we likely won’t see him for a month and who knows when him and Michael we get to have scenes together again! Plus, next week is probably going to be m*ria and m*ria/Dallas heavy 🙃Lord, beer us strength.

I think those bar scenes must be in the mind scape because Rosa has a drink by the looks of it

Rosa's holding a bottle of "Roswell Rocket", the same drink she was consuming in 3x07 when she had her chat with Dallas outside of the Pony, she was also seen drinking it at the fundraiser. I assume it's a soft drink (like cola), not alcohol. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure someone would've commented on her - a known recovering alcoholic - drinking alcohol.

Apart from that, the lights inside of the Pony are "normal" in the 3x08 still. Bright lights, warm colors, no cobwebs etc. In Maria's mindscape, it's always been all dark colors, blue lights, and so on.

Since we're already at it, I'm turning this into a 3x08 speculation post.

I've seen theories, that "our" characters are going to play people in Patricia's 1969 memories, and that the stills are from 1969 memory scenes, but then my question would be: did they have Roswell Rocket in 1969?

IDK, I think this could be a celebratory meet-up after they got rid of Jones' handprint on Maria (and thus his mental grip on her)?

Liz in the Pony promo pic is also wearing the same jacket she's wearing in the scene on the right. And going by the light streaming through in the background, I think she's at the barn where Kyle's in a coma, and she's looking at monitors next to his bed (the Kyle still below's a screenshot from 3x07 for comparison).

Also, wouldn't they all be wearing 60's clothes/hairstyles if they were playing characters in Patricia's memories, bc how would Maria, who's still in a coma, know what they are all wearing that day?

Another theory I've seen: they are in a Maria mindscape in these stills.

If they were in a Maria mindscape (as opposed to a 1969 Patricia memory playing out in Maria's mind), I'd be wondering how Liz and Alex - mere humans - would've been able to enter that mindscape?

I know Liz was in the 3x04 Wonderland mindscape - but then she wasn't really Liz, she was the White Rabbit, and the girls were on a drug trip, so that doesn't count as "human in a mindscape" imo.

Iz can zap into people's minds and pull them (whether they are human or alien) into a mindscape, but that's a conscious thing she's doing while awake. Maria's in a coma tho. So far, we've only seen people with alien abilities enter her mindscape while she's unconscious, but how would Liz and Alex be able to join them on a trip into Maria's head, if she didn't actively zap them into it?

AM I OVERTHINKING THIS??? 🤯

Anyway, I struggle to believe that any of the stills are from a mindscape situation. If they are, they have to explain to me how Liz and Alex would be able to enter the mindscape of an unconscious person.

Recap for Roswell: New Mexico S2E09: “The Diner”: flashback city

“The Diner” is one of those episodes where Roswell decides it’s going to play around with form and be non-linear, so much of the episode is told in flashbacks within flashbacks: the ‘present’ is Liz at the diner with Kyle and his justifiably angry date; the most recent flashback is Michael and Izzy’s conversation with Walt; all the other flashbacks are either Walt’s stories about the Bronson-Nora-Louise family or Jesse’s stories about why he fucking hates aliens so goddamn much (except, like, not anymore, because he doesn’t feel like it, or so he’ll tell anyone who talks to him about aliens because he thinks people believe him when he’s lying). 

    We open on Liz, who’s closing the diner for her dad while he’s driving Rosa to treatment. Who should show up on this long sleepless night but Kyle and Steph, who are venturing beyond the confines of the operating theater to beg an old friend to cook them some burgers. Kyle and Liz wind up having a whispered argument in the kitchen about two things they both feel vaguely guilty about: Liz can’t let go of the idea of looking more into alien DNA applications, despite the siblings’ many very good reasons it’s just not worth it. And Kyle refuses to tell his girlfriend that he knows about her very serious condition, until - still frustrated from the kitchen bitchin’ - he blurts it out over dinner. She’s mad he snooped in her records, and was looking for a relationship where her health didn’t come into it, so she walks out. Isobel walks in.

    FLASHBACK: meanwhile, earlier in the night, Iz and Michael take his boss, the loveably crotchety Walt Sanders, out for drinks as an incentive for him to open up about his traumatic childhood. We know he was there for Michael when he needed a couch and a meal in high school, and we now learn that he is paying forward the parenthood Roy Bronson once extended to him. 

    FLASHBACK: we see the day they met. We flash forward a couple months to the day Nora and Louise arrived at their door. We learn they picked their names out of a book, but we don’t learn the names they left behind when they crash-landed. Flash forward again to the week of the county fair, the same week they were discovered. Roy feels it’s been long enough that they’re safe to do a public activity together, and that Nora, being white, has a better shot of winning big with her pumpkin launcher. She says some stuff about how someday the world will move past prejudice, and Roy’s like, “Nice, but we live here.” He also suspects she’s got more going on than a homemade gourd trebuchet, and he’s absolutely right. Like Michael after her, she’s thinking about spaceship construction. As far as she’s concerned, she can’t afford Louise’s optimism about earth, and she has to keep Louise safe to ensure the subsequent safety of some child. One gets the ominous sense that she’s not even talking about her own son here (Michael, of course, assumes she means Max, and is plunged into another episode of abandonment over it). 

Flash forward again: after the fair. Day before the raid. Throughout the story, Michael is skeptical that any of what Walt tells him is even real - after all, he’s a drunk old guy, Michael has trust issues, and he thinks it’s entirely possible he’s just coming up with what he thinks they want to hear. But this drunk old guy has been sitting on a bag of undisclosable trauma his whole life, and maybe he’s just glad to have a chance to finally tell it as fully as he’s able. Michael doesn’t want another recap of the massacre, but we go through it anyway, once more with little clarity. Walt, after all, was hidden in a crate against a wall by Nora just before the troops came in, and only knows flashes of what happened next. He’s covering his face for most of the shooting, and still some shrapnel from the crate, losing his eye. But he makes it out of the box, and the barn - Nora, always paranoid and thinking ahead, had opened up the wall in case one of them would ever have to hide in there. 

Walt stumbles away, seeing Louise’s body and those of several neighbors before he makes it to the field. Seventy years later he still feels survivor’s guilt. As the only person left who knows the location of the pods, he keeps an eye on them, until one day the siblings have woken up and gone. When Michael is a teenager, he even attempts to put himself down as a foster parent, though his applications get routinely denied; when he admits this, Michael breaks down in tears at the knowledge that the care he was always so starved of was not for lack of someone trying after all.

    FLASHBACK: this one from Jesse Manes, from whom Alex demands some transparency re: great-uncle Tripp, who he says was rarely mentioned at home. There’s not much to mention, at least as Jesse tells it - he was murdered some time after the raid by a vengeful surviving alien, and it’s one of the reasons behind one of Jesse’s many brands of bigotry. What little we see of him from Jesse’s perspective is of a fairly nice guy; he’s investing in Arturo’s bid to buy the Crashdown, though he also dispenses advice from the classic Manes catalog: everything you do is a kind of war, and you have to win it. Niceness doesn’t do much to dispel a legacy of violence. What’s interesting is the fact that this scene posits Jesse was once a...well, a less racist guy, before a gradual radicalization. For me, this bit of past humanization is too little, too late...and it’s also coming from Jesse himself, which means there’s every chance he’s bending and smoothing over parts of his personality (both then and now) because his audience is Alex, who’s still looking for any scrap of decency in the man. Also I was right about him being more recovered than he acts like.

    FLASHBACK: When Michael and Alex meet to compare notes, Alex agrees that our heroes’ reading of the story they’ve pieced together from mostly secondary sources could be wrong. He’s reminded of his father’s assumption that Michael was seducing him versus the reality of their organic bond, so he takes the concept a step further: under the supposition that Nora and Tripp were, if not lovers, at the very least allies, we get another take on the night of the raid. In this version, Tripp tries to warn the family but is thwarted by his brother, Roy still dies (shot by Harlan), but based on later evidence, Louise made it out, and Tripp let her go. He also seems to be the man to suggest Caulfield-like proceedings in the first place, so we’re still not looking at a bona fide hero, but possibly a more nuanced involvement with at least one alien. 

    Meanwhile, all in the present timeline, Max is picked up by his old boss Sheriff Valenti when he wakes up from last episode’s attack, disoriented and with Charlie Cameron nowhere to be found. Michelle has had it up to fucking here with his disseminating and his showing up in weird places, and she promptly arrests her ex-deputy and (rather compassionately) Poirots him. Unfortunately for her presentation, which is really very thorough, her correctness about the events of Noah’s death are still super wrong as concerns motive and aftermath, and the more she extrapolates, the more she sees Max everywhere, even places he can’t reasonably have been - like the scenes of all three kidnappings. If I was Max, I’d head off Michelle’s investigating with a good old half-truth: no, he’s never been to Mexico, he actually spent his missing months having a serious heart condition and getting treated for it, which would also nicely absolve him of the kinds of strenuous kidnapping and murdering activity he’s being accused of. But he’s Max, so he does not think to do this. Kyle bails him out with it instead. As a parting act of confidence, Max tells her a little bit about the Noah situation, though how much she’ll believe remains to be seen.

    The other Michelle lede is that she wants to talk about the siblings’ childhood, since she knows they were abandoned and therefore have traumatic pasts. Max denies any trauma responses in his recollection (thinking of growing up with his very caring upper-middle-class parents), but Michelle says when she used to visit the kids before they were adopted/fostered out, he was often incredibly upset. She also says he was the wall-drawer, not Michael, who was merely holding the wrong crayon at the wrong time when the Evanses showed up. Apart from reminding us that the Evanses, for all their care, are deeply oblivious people, we have another nod to the idea that Max’s pre-pod time was more ‘small room underneath Omelas’ than ‘happy family he just can’t remember’. 

CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK

Young Arturo in his little bow tie and his eighties decor! I don't have anything else to really say, I just love him is all. 

With all of the ways in which Nora seems so similar to Michael, I’m just waiting for narrative confirmation that bursts his bubble completely about her. Even when he’s told things about her that reveal a more pragmatic, and perhaps even opportunist, side to her, he remains painfully hopeful that, if they’d ever known each other longer than three minutes, he’d have loved her and she’d have loved him and they’d have gotten along famously. But nobody’s parents are that uncomplicated. He’s gonna speedrun childhood disillusionment for the second time. 

At what point are we going to address the elephant in the Steph: the fact that I’m still pretty sure she’s, if not an alien, at the very least an alien descendant. Her having a serious and (it sounds like) terminal blood disorder’s gonna really put a pin in Liz’s ‘universal vaccine with alien antibodies’ theory.

Michael standing angstily by the bar doorway, posing with his hat and his foot up on the wall, just so that when Alex shows up he’ll see him looking Like That: also big part of the bi agenda. See the boys as they walk on by in-fucking-deed. 

(With shrinkingly vulnerable eyes): “You came.” (With the fondest smile a man could ever muster): “You asked me to.” Jesus fucking christ. Ohh we can date other people we can be normal about each other we’re being sooooo fucking normal regular guys behave this way around their old flames all the time. This is normal. Shut the fuck up.

Alex knowing which booth has secret shit stored behind it based on the knowledge that the men in his family are so allergic to aesthetic appreciation or sense of beauty that it couldn’t possibly be just the light hitting it nice. 

Line of the episode also goes to Lily Cowles’ delightfully blase Izzy kink convo: “It’s all about the headboard, okay, because decent restraints are gonna turn your cheap furniture into Swedish sawdust if your partner’s doing their job right.” Never change, babygirl. Would love to be tied up and showered in sawdust by you.

There Has To Be Three - Updated

From the very beginnings of the show, symbolism related to the number three has been present.

The most obvious example of this is the mysterious symbol seen throughout the show. We see it displayed in the town lights when the power returns after Max causes the blackout. It has recurred so often in their lives that both Max and Michael have it tattooed on their bodies.

It is initially described in terms of being a beacon. In 1.09 Songs About Texas, Max sees the symbol on the flyer for the Indigenous faith healer, Arizona. It’s here that Max learns about the way the symbol mysteriously forms near certain people, and its link to the silent woman on the reservation.

We later learn that in addition to its role as a beacon, the symbol is used as a lock. It is the Pod Squad placing their hands on their respective circle on the symbol that unlocks Mr Jones’ cell.

And again, we see the number three associated with a lock and key on the box used to house Tripp’s diary left to Patricia.

But is the power of the design intrinsic or is it what the design represents?

Does the symbol in fact represent an important cultural or biological concept for the race of aliens to which Max, Isobel, and Michael belong? Join me dear readers on my journey into the “aliens need to be in groups of three to form stable relationships and be happy” head canon.

Could it be possible that the aliens only function successfully when they form relationships, be they romantic, sexual, platonic, sibling etc when it contains three people?

We see many different groupings of people, that don’t seem to work properly until they are together or that when fractured, bad things happen.

In 2.05 we are given an answer by Max:

“The thing is, there has to be three. Okay. There’s always three. Until the end.”

“Cause it’s all broken without three.”

This is confirmation from canon that at least for the Pod Squad, three is the magic number.

The question then becomes was Max talking only about their specific situation or is it indicative of the wider cultural/biological alien imperative?

In terms of the Pod Squad, even though they are together physically, emotionally they are distant. The events surrounding Rosa’s death break the trust within the group and the closeness they had before that event is lost. It’s only once those secrets are out in the open and they begin to repair their relationship as a group, that they each start to heal their other relationships as individuals. Obviously, there are other events impacting their individual circumstances but the point holds.

Could this within its full cultural manifestation be that triads are the norm for the aliens? And that the 2.06 threesome is them unwittingly falling into the cultural norms of Michael’s society?

Does the threesome between Maria, Alex and Michael happen because they were already the most likely (basically people who are all outsiders in some way and therefore already breaking societal norms) to be open to unconventional relationship structures and therefore more open to acting on the drive towards a triadic group?

And even with Alex, Maria and Liz, their friendship was broken until they all came back together.

Even in non-romantic/sexual situations the characters tend to work better in groups of three. It isn’t until Kyle, Liz and Michael all start working together that they start making headway on healing Max and it’s only when they all contribute something equally (Liz regrowing the heart, Michael making the pacemaker and Kyle conducting the surgery) that they finally succeed.

I like that alien culture isn’t just a replication or mirror of our world. And that the differences provide a lens for us to examine our own cultural defaults. - eg monogamy (which historically hasn’t always been the default even in the West). Canon has explicitly questioned the assumption that the aliens experience sexuality in the same way as humans. Michael says in 1.11 Champagne Supernova:

“Oh, we are literally aliens, and you’re gonna hold me to some outdated binary of sexuality?”

And Isobel in 2.07 Como La Flor:

“I mean, what does an alien care about human gender constructs?”

It isn’t such a stretch to suggest that how their society structures its intimate and familial relationships is also different than humans? If aliens aren’t monosexual by default, it’s highly possible they aren’t monogamous by default either.

While allegory plays an important part in the storytelling of the show, I wish that they would also take advantage of their sci-fi setting to explore other aspects of the aliens’ culture. Use the sci-fi genre to explore how they are different as much as how they are the same as humans. The story so far has given us so many elements that could be used as a what-if starting point for exploring different possible experiences. For example, how The Expanse has shown that as humanity expands into space different distinct culture develop. In the show, we see the exploration of a polyamous Belter family that Drummer finds herself in - the #PolyamBelterFam

Realistically, we aren’t going to see this. Even though hey even went as far as having portraying a canon threesome but stopped short of fully exploring the potential of this event by giving us a fully realised polyamorous relationship.

Nevertheless, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the “three” symbolism and it’s going to be interesting to see if it gets developed further.

So only three eps in and we already have new "There Needs To Be Three" content. Let's start with the most obvious!!

Our introduction to the home planet of the Pod Squad gives us this image of the night sky with Three Moons!! Which are sort of in the same configuration as the lock symbol?

In the dialogue of the show, Isobel actually uses the term "Triad" to describe the pod squad:

"Okay, you're right. We've all been hiding things from each other. And it has to stop.

We're not strong unless we're together. It's like you said; there has to be three. We're a triad."

In S3 Ep 3 we see Michael coming to possession of some enhanced turquoise. He ends up giving pieces to Alex, while Isobel also gets a piece. Both Michael and Alex use their pieces to boost or interact with some alien technology, while Isobel's piece enhances her empathic power.

This one is purely theoretical at this point, but what about the Lockheart Machine and Jim's Radio - is there a missing third machine to complete a machine/circuit?

Roswell New Mexico - Season 3, Episode 9

 So I think that was one of my favorite episodes, certainly of the season but possibly of the whole show. I really liked everyone in this episode, even Max! Haha. But no, it was really nice to see everyone working together again and to actually get some character moments amongst all of the plot jargon. Good stuff. 

There were several things that confused the hell out of me though because of weird time jumps and missing scenes and not knowing who knows what etc. Plus everything just moved super fast in this episode and they all talked really fast. 

It annoyed me that Kyle was just awake and fine with him having no questions about being there and Ramos. Like did he know Ramos was his uncle? Was he confused about waking up in a Deep Sky barn? Plus we still had no one in any other scene even mentioning Kyle. Does anyone know that he’s okay? Does Alex know that he’s awake? I just have a lot of questions. And I miss Kyle interacting with everyone else. I did like seeing him make the choice to keep pursuing the alien mysteries for himself though because he’s invested now. That part was good. But yeah, still confused about the rest. And I really need Kyle to interact with everyone else again. 

Also I again hate that no one had any reaction to Michael and Alex being a thing. Do people know? Do they care? They were supposed to go on their first official public date in this episode but would their friends know about that? Just like take a five minute break from playing alien jeopardy and be excited that Michael and Alex are together Liz and Isobel! Also, I would have liked to see Michael’s chat with Sanders. 

I was also sad that Alex was isolated with the machine and his hallucinations of Nora feeding into all of his worst fears for most of the episode. But at least he got to have that cute conversation with Michael on the phone and of course the end which was...super cheesy but I don’t care. Haha. Also those effects of the mountain or wherever the fuck they were supposed to be were completely terrible but sure. It was nice that they got to have a little team alien science first date though. But also...wow if Deep Sky had employed some aliens sooner then maybe they could have solved all of their shit a long time ago. I do appreciate that they were trying to go on a date though and that they were showing them trying to take that step rather than just having them be a thing or whatever. I mean they are but I liked that there was actual talk about first date. It was sweet. 

Also, I loved Michael’s dumb “I come in peace” shirt. Haha. What an idiot. 

I did actually quite enjoy all of the Liz and Max stuff in this episode. It was nice to actually see them together for longer and not have it be actually Jones. I liked them working together but it’s clear they still have a lot of issues to deal with but I was glad to see them get to some of those in their arguing even if they haven’t worked through them yet. But it felt like some kind of progress for them to even address them at all. 

I adored all of the Maria, Greg and Isobel scenes. I loved Maria a lot in this episode and her and Greg are adorable. I loved Greg getting properly involved as well even though up until this point, I did not know if he knew all of the alien secrets but hey I guess he does. Sure. Anyway, I also loved Isobel’s interactions with them and constantly interrupting them but also her little sisterly chats with Maria were really nice. I very much like the relationship they are building between them. 

We FINALLY got Isobel getting a proper love interest this season. I’m so happy. I also like that it’s Anatsa even though she originally slept with Max. Haha. Sure. But I really like her and I like her chemistry with Isobel. And I loved Isobel getting all flustered when she showed up at the bar. And Maria encouraging her was great. I have no idea what the fuck Anatsa knows about anything and I really didn’t understand how she ended up at the church with Isobel later but hey at least they had that nice little moment where Iz asked her out on a date. I hope they really become something and Anatsa gets brought in on the alien stuff someday. 

Plot wise, so we still don’t know if Maria’s visions are going to be a factor going forward because once again we have not mentioned them. I would very much like to know if that’s coming back so I can know if I need to be worried for people’s lives again.

Jones continues to be a fun villain although I don’t know why they just left all of that stuff lying around at the diner for him to find. That was dumb. But I like that he just doesn’t give a shit anymore that they all know who and what he is and so he’s free to be as evil as he wants and good for him. And he’s still got his trusty dog sidekick. 

The whole Dallas/Heath connection is wild and I don’t totally understand it but I’m intrigued and I’m glad that they weren’t just random characters. I like that they’re integral to this whole thing. And hey, another alien! Also makes me wonder what Heath was really thinking all that time he was trying to help Liz when the handprint connection was killing her. How much does he really know? And for that matter, how much does Dallas know about the pod squad and the rest?

I also wonder if Anatsa will end up being more integrated in the alien stuff since they are. Hmm

Still not entirely sure what’s going on with the Lockhart machine either. Nora and Patricia were trying to contact Dallas? Who was a kid in a pod at the time? Huh? So what would they use it for now? 

So many questions. 

But again, overall, really fun episode and I genuinely enjoyed it. I did miss Rosa though. I just want one episode where everyone gets to be together.

She closed her eyes and tried to bring up the picture. Fernando had talked her into dancing, not that it took much. Someone had pushed over the hay bales to make enough room. Someone else played shitty techno from over the shitty sound system. It did the job. Rosa liked to imagine she was at a club, one of those backroom venues that barely had a stage a 3-piece could fit on, so damp that the walls sweat from how many people were packed in. The kind of clubs that played into the night and there wasn’t much stopping, where the bass thumped heavy and after a while the singer stopped pretending and just started screaming. She pretended she was anywhere else besides this town.

There was no pretending out here. The crickets sang in the distance, the toads croaked, the shit music played on. She opened her eyes.

“You were looking good out there,” Isobel said from her side. She had a solo cup in hand and Rosa could smell the rubbing alcohol scent of everclear. Wyatt’s jungle juice was known to fuck even the burliest football player up, but Isobel just stood there and sipped at it, like it was one of the fine wines Rosa knew they served at the country club.

Isobel wasn’t looking at her. She was looking back at the barn, at the string of teenagers going in and out, at the tall boy Rosa could guess was Henry Alcott Jr looking for his escaped date. Rosa watched Isobel roll her eyes and take another delicate sip of her drink.

“Running away again?” Rosa asked, ignoring Isobel’s comment. She watched Isobel shrug, eyes still on the barn.

“Let’s just say I was dying for more riveting company,” she replied. “What’s your excuse?”
