Movies I watched this week (#188):
In 1948 Edith Piaf gave Charles Aznavour a portable camera, and for 35 years he recorded his extraordinary life constantly. Le regard de Charles (2019) is a little compilation of these home movies.
The Aznavour sound is one of the most evocative memories for me and it always wraps me with unbearable sense of nostalgia and mortality. (I even saw him around 2010 in a live concert at Universal Studio together with Stella :( ....)
🍿
Evening Classes, (1967) the only Jacques Tati film I haven't seen before. A lesson in physical comedy. Mime school teacher Monsieur Hulot demonstrates to a group of business types how to be funny without words. From smoking, to tennis, fishing and horse-riding, to how to stumble when walking up the stairs. (Screenshot Above).
Bonus: As I prepare myself to re-watch all of Tati's movies again, I enjoyed the Accident from his 'Trafic' and Terry Jones talking about 'Playtime' again.
🍿
Anders Thomas Jensen is my favorite Danish screenwriter, and Susanne Bier directed 6 of his scripts. Brothers (2004) is the 5th one I've seen (and I'm going to find 'Open Hearts' next). But it's only a second-tier drama about a good brother and a "bad" one. The good one is married to Connie Nielsen, but after he goes MIA in Afghanistan, as part of the Danish rescue forces, his brother steps in to console his family. There are two little girls who play her daughters, and one of them is really good. I am not surprised to see that she is now becoming an established actress. [*Female Director*]
🍿
"Today I learnt" about French film-making duo Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, noted for their intellectual style and communist politics. I'm surprised that I never even heard of them before. Artemide’s Knee (2008) was the first cinematic poem made by the husband after the death of his wife. 2 strangers carry a stilted discourse in a small clearing in the forest, while birds are twitting. It's philosophical and "different", but quiet absorbing. (And I need to listen to much more Mahler, obviously!)
🍿
"Where is Homer? Where is Kazantzakis? Where is Jack London?!"
Invasion of the body snatchers, the 1978 remake, the ultimate "replacement" conspiracy plot. With Robert Duvall as an uncredited priest on a swing, and poor Brooke Adams who could do this unforgettable thing by fluttering her pupils. Great atmospheric build-up in a very dark San Francisco. And the creepy mud bath spa... A great re-watch. ♻️. 7/10.
🍿
The Pizza Triangle, my 3rd by Ettore Scola, and the worst example of Commedia all'italiana I've seen so far. A working class ménage à trois with Monica Vitti, Marcello Mastroianni, and young Giancarlo Giannini, so it had a lot going for it. But the comedy was unfocused and muddled, and all three did so much better elsewhere. 2/10.
🍿
2 Gene Hackman comedies:
🍿 With Clinton and 'The West Wing', 90's Hollywood developed a light sub-genre of liberal president romance-comedy, the best of which were 'Dave' and 'The American President'. Most other comedies from that period however dated badly and stale since. Welcome to Mooseport (2004) is one of these. It employs the same cliches, the presidential dog on a leash, the mistresses, the smarmy young aide, the secret service allays, but it's not very good. Plumber Ray Romano duels with retired President Hackman for the affection of Maura Tierney, but he's just not funny. Sadly, this was Gene Hackman's last film. He could be great in a good comedy ('Young Frankenstein', 'Get Shorty', 'The birdcage'), but this was weak. 3/10.
🍿 Heartbreakers was also the last film of a great star, Ann Bancroft. But the machinations of the female 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' mother and daughter con artists team, working to scam old billionaire Hackman out of his fortune was so badly-made, I could barely stay for 30 minutes. We need much better stories of women conning men.
🍿
A lame low-low-budget horror parody from 2001, Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. Wikipedia sums it up as "Jesus Christ's modern-day struggle to protect the lesbians of Ottawa, Ontario, from vampires with the help of Mexican wrestler El Santo". Unbelievable schlock presented un-ironically on a community college B-level. I used to like reading Joe Bob Briggs's 1980's drive-in reviews, and he could have given it 3 stars, but not me: Maybe not the absolute worst movie I ever saw, but close to it.
🍿
3 by Canadian cartoonist Richard Condie:
🍿 The big snit was nominated for the Oscars in 1985. It a 'Laugh-Out-Loud' ride about an older couple whose Scrabble game is being interrupted by a worldwide nuclear attack (which they don't notice). The style is 'Blue Meanies' from 'Yellow Submarine' + Beaker from 'The Muppet Show'. Highly recommended! 10/10.
🍿 Relatable! For anybody who ever suffered from procrastination, Getting Started is a perfect way not to do what they have to do for 12 additional minutes. A pianist finds all kinds of excellent excuses to not practice for his upcoming Debussy concert. 9/10.
🍿  John Law and the Mississippi Bubble (1978) was an unexpected lesson in economic theory, illustrating a chapter from French history. It was about the Scottish economist who advised the French regent to ditch gold and substituting it with paper currency. High school level explanation, drawn in Condie's irreverent style.
🍿
Pink Floyd Live in Venice is a concert film, performed on July 15 1989. It was staged free of charge on a floating barge on the Grand Canal, in front of 200,000 spectators. The live experience must have been amazing, and it was transmitted worldwide for 100 million viewers, but as a concert film it was ordinary.
🍿
A bunch of shorts:
🍿  Black Slide (2021), a surprisingly beautiful story by an Israeli animator about a timid boy at a water park. Recommended! 8/10.
🍿 Détour (2017), my 7th by Michel Gondry. A young girl’s tricycle gets lost as a French family leaves home for their 'vacance', so it miraculously rides all the way to the beach, to reunite with its little owner. Cute and inventive, as always, and shot on an iPhone. 8/10.
🍿 "I need Space!" Comfort Creatures (1989), the original Aardman mockumentary with 'man on the street' interviews of zoo animals. Nick Parks first Oscar win. Very sad. Re-watch ♻️.
🍿 Amazing Maize, a fascinating British Pathé educational explainer about how corn grows. Using pretty amazing time-lapse and mgnification for its time (1933). [*Female Director*]
🍿 The 2010 Brazilian The tenant is about a large soap bubble traveling through the many rooms in a house which is being renovated. It explores the space looking for an open window. Surprisingly, it's quite suspenseful.
🍿 Much better now, a cute Portuguese short about a surfing bookmark found in an old book.
🍿  Spacy (1981), an acclaimed experimental short by avant-garde artist Takashi Ito. The camera jumps and whirls uncontrollably inside an empty gymnasium, creating an epileptic-psychedelic effect. M'eh.
🍿 Charlie Chaplin tries to ride a penny-farthing bicycle is a short behind-the-scene archival clip from 1919.
🍿 Meanwhile, I'm waiting for the new series Common Side Effects, from the creator of 'Office Space', 'Idiocracy' and 'Silicon Valley'...
🍿
(My complete movie list is here).

Somewhat cursed (?) idea: Newsies/Gravity Falls (or a series like that).
Oooohhhhh...
Okay, so I’m gonna be completely honest, I didn’t grow up watching Gravity Falls. I was a Phineas and Ferb type of kid, but I always appreciated the idea behind Gravity Falls and I did watch the first couple of episodes the other day to get a little bit more of a feel for this AU.
Okay, so those of you who read my stories and my outlines know that I am a sucker for angst, so this AU is gonna be less of a children’s cartoon and a little bit more… well… not real… but… I don’t know… more angsty?
Anyways, here we go!
Gravity Falls AU
Tumblr media
Characters
Jack Kelly — Dipper
Racetrack Higgins — Mabel
Katherine Plumber — Wendy
Medda Larkin — Stan
Just to be clear, the personalities here are not an exact match 😂
Anyways,
Jack Kelly
A seventeen year old orphan.
He and his little brother are sent to a new placement in a town called Gravity Falls with a foster mother, one Miss Medda, who has a fascination with the unexplained.
Jack has never really believed in the things she seems to find so amazing.
He loves horror movies but often tries to rationalize them which drives his little brother just about insane.
He’s OCD and a bit of a control freak, but it’s the thing that typically keeps him out of trouble.
Before Medda, he and his little brother had been in a few less than nice homes, so Jack was used to keeping Race occupied and out of the house.
During the first week with Medda, she gives him an old, mysterious book that has an odd number three on the cover
Jack becomes obsessed with the book and studies it, not necessarily believing it’s real at first, but talking about it like it is
He has ADHD and has trouble sitting still
Often overthinks scenarios and obsessively makes lists when he’s overwhelmed or trying to figure things out.
He loves to explore and loves to figure out the history of wherever he’s placed, even though he often believes it won’t last long.
He has a massive crush on one of Medda’s employees and flirts with her often
Jack is first introduced to the supernatural forces around him during a walk in the woods
He catches one of his neighbors, a boy named Charlie, practicing magic in the woods.
After the initial terror is worked through, Charlie becomes Jack’s friend. One of his best friends.
He’s told he has to keep it a secret from everyone, though most of the town is involved in theories and mysterious phenomena
Jack is forced to let the secret out when he discovers his little brother new friend, Graves, is a vampire
This is when Charlie, more affectionately known as Crutchie, tells Jack more secrets about the town and introduces Jack to Albert, a vampire who promises to help Jack’s brother
After this incident, Jack quickly gets swept up into the world of the unexplained
He’s terrified of ghosts. He doesn’t like that they don’t have many rules
Racetrack Higgins
The little brother to Jack and basically Jack’s whole world for a long time
He’s fifteen.
He’s slightly naive and a hopeless romantic
Though he loves horror movies, he prefers romance dramas.
He always seems to be full of energy, despite being slightly abused before. Jack always took the brunt of it for him.
While he’s always curious and a bit of an adventurer, he’s often forced to stay back by Jack
He has ADHD, just like Jack.
Often, he attempts to lighten the mood and is seen as ridiculous and over the top, but Jack knows it’s mostly for his sake
Unlike Jack, Race hates to make plans and enjoys running in head first and winging it
Again, Race is a hopeless romantic and is perceived as a bit of slut by most of the kids at many new schools that he attends. Despite this, he remains optimistic about finding a boyfriend
Graves is the first person to show interest and Race is infatuated with him
It’s because Graves wants him to be
Jack tries to tell him he’s under a spell of some kind, but Race tells him he’s crazy
Graves lures Race into the wood, planning on kidnapping him and feeding his blood to his flock
Albert, Jack and Crutchie save his life and Albert becomes Race’s best friend.
Race is understandably frightened after this encounter and spends a lot of time in Jack’s room, finding the book that Jack has annotated and color coded
He becomes obsessed with the book too
He memories almost every outlined supernatural being and ways to deal with them
He eventually dates someone named Drake, a telepath with telekinesis who nearly kills Jack after becoming obsessed with Race
He is extremely creative and gets Jack out of trouble time and time again by thinking outside of the box
Though it appears to most that Jack is extremely protective of Race, most underestimate the lengths Race would go to protecting Jack
After many odd and dangerous dates with many boys with bad agendas, Race eventually meets Spot
Spot is a dark angel, also known as a demon
Jack and him don’t get along.
Race really likes him
Eventually, Race gets bit by Graves and Albert has to suck the venom from him before he turns into a vampire
Katherine Plumber
Katherine is an eighteen year old part time employee and Medda’s Mystery Shack.
While she’s very peppy and girly, she’s never afraid to get her hands dirty and join Jack and Race in figuring out Gravity Falls mysteries.
She knows Jack has a crush on her, if not from him flirting, from Race who constantly tells her.
She treats Race like her own little brother
While she enjoys hearing stories about the unexplained and the supernatural, she doesn’t believe any of it exists until her and Jack and Race and some of her friends get trapped in an abandoned convenience store
This is the first time she sees how brave Jack can be as he is the one who convinced the ghosts to let them go
While she introduces herself as Plumber, her real name is Pulitzer, though she doesn’t like to admit it.
Joseph Pulitzer is a rich businessman trying to buy the town. He wants to cut down the forest which would cost many mythical beings their home and Medda her business
When Jack and Race are new to town, many are hostile towards them as they’re outsiders. Katherine always stands up for them.
Though she is extremely girly, she has tremendous strength and is a really good fighter
She speaks three languages, English, Spanish and French and dabbles in Latin
Though she loves Medda, she often finds ways to blow of working and even has her own set up on the roof that she shows Jack
It’s the first place they kiss. Jack makes the first move and she can’t help but kiss him back even though she has a boyfriend at the time
She adores her boys and every person Jack befriends that belongs to the supernatural world.
She has amazing survival skills taught to her by her five older brothers. These come in very handy when her and her boys are in trouble.
Medda Larkin
Miss Medda Larkin is a supernatural enthusiast
She takes Race and Jack in after learning that their mother was an old friend of hers.
It is eventually discovered that it was their mother who wrote the book they’re so infatuated with
She runs a Mystery Shack, a tourist shop full of regular merchandise and odd ones
When Jack and Race first arrive, she lets them have one thing each, for free.
Jack takes a baseball cap and Race takes a necklace
Medda has known about the unexplained since she was a child.
Medda often sends the boys on odd errands which mysteriously get them into trouble
She is extremely protective of Jack and Race loves them unconditionally.
Medda is the only person to know that there is not only one mystery journal, but three.
She gives Jack the third journal in hopes that maybe he’ll find something she hasn’t.
She tells them a story about a young woman who went missing deep in the woods and asks Jack to try and solve the mystery.
That woman was Jack and Race’s mother
Not even Medda knows what happened to her

Whether, like Plumber Manor in Dorset, they’ve been owned by the same family for hundreds of years or are a cherished new project such as Caer Beris in Wales, manor hotels have a family at their hearts.  Packed with history, these hotels pride themselves on delightfully old-fashioned hospitality with generous meals, antique furniture, gardens to wander in and countryside to admire.  There are famous ones, including Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and Gravetye and Cowley Manors, but there are plenty of others to discover, and some of them have superb deals this year. Lympstone Manor, Devon  Lympstone Manor in Devon has a Michelin-starred restaurant and 21 bedrooms in the main house, with high levels of indulgence that include a resident artist and a vista of the River Exe Stunning: Pictured is one of the bathrooms, which features two freestanding gold baths and a marble double sink  When chef Michael Caines bought this Regency mansion near Exmouth in 2017, part of the appeal was the surrounding farmland which he thought would make an ideal terroir for English sparkling wine. More than 17,000 vines were planted, and the first vintage is due in 2021. In the meantime, there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant and 21 bedrooms in the main house, with high levels of indulgence that include a resident artist and a vista of the River Exe. New this year are equally luxurious shepherd’s huts that sleep up to five guests. Doubles from £560, including breakfast and lunch (lympstonemanor.co.uk).   Ockenden Manor, West Sussex Sussex treat: Ockenden Manor, near Cuckfield, serves afternoon cream tea with scones and finger sandwiches  Tucked into the countryside near the South Downs, next to the boutique-filled village of Cuckfield, parts of this mansion date from the 16th Century. If you want to delve into the oldest part of the hotel, ask for the Master Timothy suite, which has wooden panelling, reading nooks and an adjacent room for children. Downstairs is given over to a bar, drawing rooms and a restaurant which overlooks a semi-wild garden; its wine list reflects the burgeoning Sussex vineyard scene. The former walled garden now houses a spa with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool; there are also a handful of suites, allowing guests to drift between their rooms and treatments. One-night Spa Break Getaway costs from £143pp for dinner, B&B with £25 voucher towards a spa treatment from Monday to Friday (prideofbritainhotels.com). Buckland Manor, Worcestershire Chef Will Guthrie raids the nearby Vale of Evesham for produce both in the restaurant and for hampers to take on picnics around Buckland Manor and beyond  There are 15 rooms, some of them with four-poster beds and views of church spires. Distinctly more family-friendly than many Cotswolds hotels, there are interconnecting rooms as well as special menus for children  Domesday mention:  The manor house has ‘Domesday Book history and plenty of modern-day appeal’ A manor house with Domesday Book history and plenty of modern-day appeal. The 15th Century timbered hall provides the backdrop for afternoon tea in winter, although in summer it spreads out into the gardens. The beautiful village of Broadway is a gentle hike away, so are the gardens at Snowshill. There are 15 rooms, some of them with four-poster beds and views of church spires. Distinctly more family-friendly than many Cotswolds hotels, there are interconnecting rooms as well as special menus for children. Chef Will Guthrie raids the nearby Vale of Evesham for produce both in the restaurant and for hampers to take on picnics around the hotel and beyond. Two-night stays from £315pp, including B&B plus one dinner and a National Trust card worth £127 (bucklandmanor.co.uk). Plumber Manor, Dorset Generations of the Prideaux-Brune family have lived at Plumber Manor in Dorset since they built it in the 1600s – and it shows A textbook West Country manor house, from the long driveway surrounded by fields to the mullion windows framed by roses. Generations of the Prideaux-Brune family have lived at Plumber since they built it in the 1600s and it shows, with resident black labradors, proper family portraits and a collection of classic cars. There are six bedrooms in the main house, ten others in a restored stone barn. Spread over three dining rooms, the menu is classic country house, strong on cheese souffle and peppered beef, followed by home-made puddings. B&B from £155. For a three-night minimum stay, dinner, B&B is from £137.50pp per night (plumbermanor.co.uk). Manor House, Wiltshire The 14th Century ivy-clad manor house in Wiltshire is filled with stained-glass windows, beams and a Michelin-starred restaurant There are 21 rooms in the main house and 29 cottages around the grounds, some of which are dog-friendly With its charming honey-stoned houses, Castle Combe is often described as England’s most beautiful village, and it has caught the eye of many a Hollywood director. It has a 14th Century ivy-clad manor house – in the same honey-coloured stone to match – filled with stained-glass windows, beams and a Michelin-starred restaurant. There are 21 rooms, including the delightful Lordsmeer suite in the main house and 29 cottages around the grounds, some of which are dog-friendly. There’s an 18-hole golf course and a glorious Italianate garden, and the Bybrook river meanders through the grounds. B&B doubles from £250 (exclusive.co.uk/the-manor-house). Titchwell Manor, Norfolk A hotel that catches the posh but gently boho North Norfolk vibe beautifully; this Victorian building is too close to the beach to have any airs and graces, but there’s a lot of breezy charm. Meals are served in an expansive conservatory and there are 26 rooms, some with hot tubs. Owned by the Snaith family, it is managed by their son Eric, who also runs Norfolk’s smartest fish and chip shop in nearby Thornham. Family-friendly, it’s also a stylish bolthole for birdwatchers; there’s an RSPB reserve next door. B&B from £140. A two-night walking break including dinner, B&B plus a packed lunch on one day costs from £265pp (titchwellmanor.com). Longueville Manor, Jersey  Longueville Manor, Jersey, puts food and wine at the centre of its appeal This Relais & Châteaux hotel may put food and wine at the centre of its appeal, but there’s much more on offer.  The 30 rooms and suites are cream and serene, generously sized and with French-accented luxury.  For extra privacy, there’s a two-bedroom cottage in the grounds, alongside tennis courts and a spa. The hotel also has its own yacht. Longueville became a hotel in 1949 and is now in the third generation of family ownership.  There’s a fine cellar, with more than 5,000 bottles, a forager on staff to supplement the extensive kitchen garden and honey from hives dotted around the grounds.  Doubles from £225, room-only (longuevillemanor.com). Aynsome Manor Hotel, Cumbria Aynsome Manor Hotel, Cumbria, has 13 bedrooms, some in the beamed eaves of the building, all with the sort of views that will have you pulling on your walking boots For those who like the wilder side of Cumbria, here is a handsome, good-value manor near Cartmel, now run by the second generation of the Varley family. There are just 13 bedrooms, some in the beamed eaves of the building, all with the sort of views that will have you pulling on your walking boots. Guests eat in the dining room rather than a restaurant and the food aims to make the flavours sing with minimal fuss. The menus are set-price and a bargain at three courses for £30. B&B from £90 per night (aynsomemanorhotel.co.uk). Caer Beris Manor, Powys The Southwick family bought Caer Beris Manor in Powys last year and spent lockdown continuing their renovation programme  Lord Swansea built this mock-Tudor mansion, surrounded on three sides by the River Irfon, in 1896 on the foundations of a 13th Century castle. It was bought by the Southwick family last year. There are 22 rooms spread across the estate, ranging from suites to single rooms. The family spent lockdown continuing their renovation programme and have created picnic areas throughout the grounds, which also hold orchards and an otter hide, while there’s trout, salmon and grayling to fish for. The 1898 restaurant sources its ingredients locally. Mains start at £16. B&B from £90 (caerberis.com). Manor House, Argyll and Bute Manor House, Argyll and Bute, is ‘delightfully gentle’ with just 11 rooms and spectacular West Coast views The Scots don’t do manors in quite the same way as the English – fortified castles were more their thing. This hotel is one of the exceptions, and it’s delightfully gentle with just 11 rooms and spectacular West Coast views. It was built for the Duke of Argyll in 1780, next to Oban’s harbour. Staying here is a superb introduction to the Inner Hebrides, from the freshly caught seafood in the restaurant to sunset views from McCaig’s Tower behind the hotel – although watching from the Nelson bar at the hotel with a fine whisky in hand is nearly as good. Sailors can use the hotel’s own mooring. Double B&B from £224 (manorhouseoban.com). The Manor at Sway, Hampshire Pictured is one of the bedrooms at The Manor at Sway, Hampshire, where ‘William Morris mixes with a touch of modern design’ All the space and grace that the Edwardians could muster comes into play at this hotel on the southern edge of the New Forest, where William Morris mixes with a touch of modern design. It’s a great car-free option as it’s near the railway station and there are wonderful walks into the forest and heath to explore from the hotel.
