Choo-Choo
It was not my intention to open two Mourvedre’s back-to-back, but this thing called to me from the cellar tonight and I answered. Is it different from last night’s Monastrell? Night and day. And this is not something from the blingy throes of #winebro West-side Paso, but solid, perfectly articulated fare from the Templeton Gap out in El Pomar. Black and dense, the inky thinning to turbid-clear at…

Album of the day: Automaton by Jamiroquai @jamiroquaihq @jamiroquaifr_34 @jamiroquaifans @jamiroquai.only | Got #madlove for this amazing album - it’s a must have in your collection. “My only question is, when is he coming to #toronto ???” .. ... .... The perfect wine I’m choosing to pair with this funky kickass album is the “Pomar Junction Vineyard Syrah 2014” from Pomar Junction Cellars @pomarjunctionwinery | Full-Bodied Smooth .... Pomar Junction has been SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified, making it one of the first wineries to comply with the rigorous, comprehensive requirements. The grapes for this Syrah were cooled by sea breezes that worked their way inland through the Templeton Gap, moderating the warm days and ensuring freshness and lift in the wines. This soft, lithe wine has impressive black fruit with a delicate oak influence. It'll be great with grilled beef, but don't shy away from trying it with something like peppercorn-crusted tuna. (Vintages panel, Nov. 2017) - If you live in #ontario get it at your local @lcbo .. .. .. .. #vinyladdiction #vinylclub #wineoclock #musicandwine #lmlw #lovemusic #lovewine #winetasting #wine #winenight #winery #winestagram #winelovers🍷 #vinyllover #vinylporn #vinylcollector #vinylcommunity #vinylcollection_feature #vinyloftheday #lovemusiclovewine #jamiroquai #wineallthetime #wineallday #winesommelier #winesomemore #wine4all (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt0qp-Jn_0T/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gcm7qnz8yxx0

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING
Join us tonight, 6:30-8:30 pm, for our very first tasting with fantastic importer WINE MC2, a purveyor of wine from excellent small wineries, mostly focused on France and a little bit of California. Our gal pal Amy will be here pouring four terrific wines from the book, over cheese from Eastern District and bread from She Wolf. Plus, there's a couple of really good parties in the neighborhood tonight benefiting excellent causes (Children! Immigrants!) that we are very proud to support with great wines so after you taste here, you should make the rounds... Thursday is the new Friday, you guys!!!
Domaine Léon Boesch Edelzwicker, Alsace 2014
This perky liter bottle is a kitchen sink blend of Alsatian varieties- Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat- and it's so ridiculously easy and fun to drink that you'll really be thankful for the extra glass or two the larger format offers. It's floral and fresh, and a little spicy, and will pair brilliantly with Asian cuisine... take a bottle or two and some friends to byob joint Peking Duck House and have the time of your life. $18
Domaine de la Realtiere Pastel Rosé, Provence 2017
This vivacious no-sulfur-added pink drink is a blend of Grenache, Cabernet, and Cinsault from Provence is the main event for the folks at Domaine de la Realtiere... where some wineries make rosé as an afterthought, this is their main focus and it's freaking delicious. It's bright, lively, and pure and lacks the funk that you may equate with natural wine without lacking in character in any way, shape, or form. A conversation starter and a good friend, Pastel will keep you coming back for more. $21
André Vatan Moulin Bele Sancerre Rouge 2015
This gorg. barrel aged Pinot from the heart of one of the Loire Valley's most popular regions is kind of what I want to drink most of the time. 2015 was a particularly warm year in the Loire, and while that didn't work for everyone, it gave this typically lean style of Pinot a little more oomph and it turns out, we like oomph! I like this wine with basically everything- it's got incredibly lush, bright fruit and just a lil' bit of minerality for good measure. $25
Pomar Junction Vineyard Brooster "Fighting Red", Paso Robles 2015
This casual blend of seven grapes from Paso Robles (mostly Merlot) is a super approachable table red that will warm you up on these cold pretend-spring nights and pair excellently with grilled things when you actually want to be outside for an extended period of time... or veggie chili when you don't. It's a little peppery, a little juicy and a little structured- a perfect balance of delightful qualities for whatever mood you're in. $17

Paso me Pinot
This is understandably somewhat tired. But it’s an odd sort of tired: not almondy, rachety vegetal typical pinot tired–just a chubby sort of tired. More of a *Paso* sort of tired. Imagine that! It’s very good and I am drinking it tonight and not opening a back-up: it is nowhere NEAR that fatigued. Beautiful, actually, with mere signals here and there it will not be improving further. OR WILL…

Train Ride
Paso Cab just hits different. As any loyal reader knows, I drink a fair bit of Napa and Sonoma cab–and not a whole lot of Paso. Not really a conscience decision–just happenstance. And–unpopular opinon coming–I think Santa Margarita and the East-side make better cab than the blingy glory-holes of the coveted–and $$$–West-side. Clean and direct, showing all the things EYE like in a Cabernet. All…

Tempranillo Goals
SLO County hits pretty hard on the Iberian varieties: not just Edna Valley’s fascination with Albarino, but Paso Robles has numerous wineries putting out classic, well-done Tempranillo–not to mention Garnacha and Carinena–there’s even a little Mencia. Out on the east-side, in the vast rolling hills of El Pomar District, the dry climate, cooling influence of the Templeton Gap and gobs of sunshine…

Lemberger Nights
Some wines you just HAVE to buy. Even if you’re lukewarm on the producer. I’d heard of this guy having a Blaufrankisch in his roster–but never ran into it on a shelf until now. I had never even heard of Kenneth Volk until I moved to the Central Coast almost 20 years ago–and discovered quickly people spoke in revered tones around his name. I’ve had numerous wines from him over the years,…

Pomar Verdot
The fruit that comes pouring out of this black thing is nothing short of eye-crossing. Charred and dusty, concentrated into a thick elixir, dried figs and cranberries, raisin and praline. And yet, it is not “pruney” or “raisiney” or even particularly *burnt*, just a rich reduction of dense ability more stewed dessert than anything: massive briar churns at the edges, pine and gravel, feeling much…

Q&A with Matt Merrill of Pomar Junction Vineyard & Winery
Q&A with Matt Merrill of Pomar Junction Vineyard & Winery
I’ve known Matt Merrill for several years now and have learned quite a bit about him and his family history here in our area. One of the things I’ve learned about this area is that we have a very rich history that involves family legacy over generations. I think it’s one of those things worth learning about and documenting for the generations coming after us. So let’s learn a bit more about Matt…
