Being Married was the condition for being eligible for applying for the post of AANGANWADI KARYKARTA at Gugdi, Barmer, Rajasthan
This is a case where being unmarried was the condition of illegibility of a female condition for applying to the post Aanganwadi Karyakarta and the logic behind the condition was if a candidate gets married and shifts to her marital home (located at different place), the working of the Center where she was appointed would get hampered.
This condition is not only violative of fundamental right guaranteed under Article 14 & 16 of the Constitution of India but also impinges the dignity of the woman.
Miss Madhu v. State of Rajasthan & 5 others
Writ Petition 11280/2019 before Rajasthan High Court at Jaipur
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dinesh Mehta J allowed the Writ Petition
Facts
1. An advertisement dt. 28.06.2019 was issued by the State of Rajasthan inviting eligible candidates to apply for the posts of Aanganwadi Karyakarta. The petitioner Miss Madhu, approached the Child Development Project Officer, Women & Child Development Department for submitting her application form.
2. The Child Development Project Officer, verbally told her that as she is unmarried, so she is not eligible to apply for the post as the Condition of eligibility was unmarried candidates will not be eligible for appointment.
3. As the Child Development Project Officer, refused to accept her application form, she sent the same on 23.07.2019 by way of speed post.
4. Immediately thereafter, the petitioner moved Hon’ble High Court of Rajasthan by way of filing the present writ petition & on 29.07.2019, an interim order was passed, accordingly till further orders, the Child Development Project Officer was directed to consider the application filed by the petitioner for appointment.
Submission of the Counsel of the Petitioner
1. Condition is absolutely irrational, discriminatory and violative of fundamental rights of the unmarried candidates.
Submission of the Counsel of the State
1. The petitioner had failed to submit her application form by the last date therefore she is not entitled for any relief.
2. The rationale behind condition of being married for being eligible for being engaged as Aanganwadi Worker is if a candidate gets married and shifts to her marital home (located at different place), the working of the Center where she was appointed would get hampered.
Issue before the Court
1. As to whether a candidate can be discriminated or denied public employment on the ground of his/her marital status?
Observation of the Hon’ble Court
1. An entirely new front of discrimination, which was not even envisaged by the framers of the Constitution has now been opened by the respondents by including the contentious condition in the Circular.
2. Present case is a classic case wherein, the discrimination encountered by women has been given a new facet. An unmarried woman is discriminated against a married woman.
3. The reason given does not pass the test of reasonableness and prudence.
4. Mere fact that a candidate is unmarried cannot be a reason to disqualify her.
5. A host of questions can be posed to the policy makers of the State - What if, the candidate marries to a boy of the same village or vicinity? What if, a married woman after being engaged as Anganwadi Karykarta moves to other place? What if, a woman’s husband decides to live in woman’s parental home? What if, a woman gets widowed or divorced and decides to move to a new place? and What if, a woman does not wish to marry at all !
6. The State can neither pre-empt any such situations nor can it prevent a woman from claiming job simply because she has not tied the nuptial knot.
7. The condition is not only violative of fundamental rights guaranteed to a woman under Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India impinges upon a woman’s dignity
8. The condition of a woman to be married being absolutely unconscionable and violative of women’s right to apply and get public employment is liable to be declared arbitrary and unconstitutional.
Order of the Court
1. The petition is allowed. The impugned Condition is hereby quashed to the extent they require a woman to be unmarried.
2. The State will, however, be free to take requisite undertaking from the unmarried woman candidates or amend the Circular so as to ensure that if a woman having been engaged on any post in any Aaganwadi Center migrates to a place other than the area covered by the Aanganwadi Center on account of marriage or otherwise, her engagement will be brought to an end.
3. The petitioner has already sent her form and in pursuance of the interim order her application is directed to be considered.
4. Gram Panchayat and the The Child Development Project Officer, Women & Child Development Department are directed to process petitioner’s application form within a period of four weeks from today in accordance with law. It will be obligatory upon the respondents to engage the petitioner as Aanganwadi Karyakarta, if she is otherwise meritorious and eligible.

OFF THE GRID: “A Symbol for the New Era” BY GUCCI
“Designed for those mindful of their environmental impact, Gucci Off The Grid is the first collection from Gucci Circular Lines, created in line with the House’s vision for circular production.” -Gucci
The fashion system exists on a linear model: Clothing is produced, it’s shipped to a store, it’s purchased by a consumer, and eventually, it’s discarded. Circularity is the solution, a concept that bends the straight line from product to consumer to landfill by designing clothes with their “end of life” in mind instead. The goal is to ensure as many “lives” as possible for a garment by using materials that can be broken down, recycled, and made into something else on a constant loop.
Reference- https://www.vogue.com/
Tumblr media
That shift won’t happen overnight, mostly because so much of what exists is made from synthetics and complicated blends, which are nearly impossible to recycle; the best bet for those pieces is the secondhand market. To get fashion on the road to true circularity, designers have to completely rethink the way they make their products, down to every stitch—starting now.

A post shared by Gucci Official (@gucci)

Gucci is one of the first luxury houses to commit to a circular future, starting with its new capsule, Gucci Off the Grid, a unisex offering of sporty daywear and accessories made from organic, recycled, or bio-based materials. A persimmon GG-logo’s windbreaker, for instance, comes in Econyl, a regenerated nylon that can be infinitely recycled. Even the details we rarely consider were updated: The drawstring in the hood is made of recycled polyester, and the snaps on the pockets are recycled plastic. A pair of high-top sneakers has a similarly meticulous construction, with Econyl uppers, recycled steel eyelets, and organic cotton and viscose linings. The handbags feature the same Econyl material in bright citrus hues, plus metal- and chrome-free leather trims and recycled brass hardware. Every item will arrive in an FSC-certified recycled cardboard box and a recycled nylon dustbag.
Tumblr media
Figuring out all of these elements—and how the materials would work together—required deep collaboration across Gucci departments. “Working on this project was very interesting, because I would say my job [is], above all, experimentation,” creative director Alessandro Michele tells Vogue. “I like to test myself on the most unlikely projects. This one was stimulating because I worked in close contact with the design office, the technicians, and the manufacturing researchers to reach a common goal. We realized we could produce something that was 100% in compliance with our desire to create using only recycled, regenerated, and sustainable materials, without forsaking quality, design, or performance,” he continues. “The project has become a symbol for the new era.”
Tumblr media
Off the Grid is part of a larger initiative called Gucci Circular Lines, which will focus on minimizing the brand’s use of new raw materials and explore all manner of regenerated textiles. Maybe natural fibers like cotton and cashmere will be next, and in the near future, we might see actual garments and accessories be transformed into something new. That would be consistent with the strategy Kering, which owns Gucci, outlined last year at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit; its chief sustainability officer Marie-Claire Daveu said upcycling is “the future,” and Gucci has taken quiet steps in that direction in recent years. Between 2018 and 2019, the brand reports it was able to save and repurpose 22 tons of leather scraps from its factories.
Beyond educating its customers about Econyl and leather scraps, Gucci’s major contribution will be influencing other designers—and other industries—to take climate change seriously and invest in circular models. It’s an understatement to say that where Michele goes, others tend to follow; in this instance, a little imitation would be the best-case scenario. His broader vision is for a calmer, more conscious world in which fashion can exist in harmony with nature, a concept mirrored in his campaign starring Jane Fonda, King Princess, Lil Nas X, David Mayer de Rothschild, and Miyavi. They’re photographed in a treehouse surrounded by skyscrapers, a vaguely surreal reminder that “our planet exists, even when it seems [like] it’s not there, or it’s far away.” The concept came together before the pandemic, but it feels prescient now—especially for us New Yorkers. Five months pregnant, 33-year-old Niken Fajarsari has to juggle work, domestic chores and teaching her son, as schools have been closed in Jakarta to curb the transmission of COVID-19.
Despite Jakarta’s large-scale social distancing (PSBB) measures, Niken still has to commute to her job at a ministerial office in the heart of the capital city periodically, as her family is now relying solely on her income.
Her husband resigned from his job at a financial technology company in February to start a toy store and a coffee shop, both of which have been badly affected by the outbreak. The couple will sometimes accept catering orders for extra money.
"My son gets so much homework from his kindergarten, be it written tasks, arts and crafts or practical assignments. He must wait until I get home to finish the tasks [...] Moreover, it must be well-documented in pictures or videos, which are supposed to be submitted daily to the teachers. Doing this straight after work, while pregnant, makes me feel like I want to pass out," Niken told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Schools have been closed in Jakarta, the national epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, since March 16, well before PSBB measures went into effect on April 10. Since then, many other regions have followed suit.
The Education and Culture Ministry issued a circular letter on March 24 calling for schools to provide distance learning activities for students while they stayed at home and announcing the cancellation of national exams.
It remains unclear when schools will reopen. The government predicts the outbreak could reach its peak in the country by the end of May.
The uncertainty has taken a toll on mothers in Indonesia, where women are expected to bear the responsibility of child-rearing on top of other domestic chores.
A 2016 Asian Development Bank (ADB) economics working paper found that childcare responsibilities limited Indonesian women's engagement in the compensated labor market. Women who had young children, the report said, were significantly less likely to work than their childless peers.
Although women did appear to reenter the labor force as their children got older, they did so through family work or self-employment as there was little re-entry into wage-based work as the children aged, the report found.
These have been among the reasons provided for women's low – but slowly growing – participation in the country’s workforce, despite sustained economic growth since the 1980s.
As of February 2019, the rate of women's participation in the workforce was 55.5 percent, a slight increase from 55.44 percent in February 2018. The figure was a stark contrast to men's labor force participation rate at 83.18 percent.
Niken said that prior to the outbreak, she had to take care of house chores while looking after her son on her own, without the help of a domestic worker, who are often employed by middle- and high-income households in Indonesia.
Furthermore, there were growing expectations from Niken’s mother-in-law to follow in her footsteps as a working mom who had managed to handle everything by herself.
It was only after her husband resigned that they started sharing the domestic work, although it was no easy task in the beginning. Fights could not be helped as both tried to adjust to the new normal, she said.
"I'm afraid that my son won’t be able to study optimally. Sometimes, I can’t help but grumble in front of him because I’m tired from work. I sometimes feel guilty and sad because he is supposed to enjoy learning at home [...] It's important for mothers to stay sane," Niken said, just before Kartini Day.
Kartini Day, celebrated annually on April 21 to commemorate the birth of the eponymous national heroine Raden Ajeng Kartini, offers Indonesians the opportunity to appreciate and express their gratitude for the role of women, especially mothers.
Hailed as a symbol of women’s empowerment in Indonesia, Kartini’s life demonstrates the idea that women’s empowerment cannot be separated from education and contributions to public life, goals that are still often sacrificed for motherhood and marriage in general.
After leading a life enlightened by the promise of equal education opportunities for girls and women, Kartini was pushed into marriage and died giving birth.
During times of crisis, women are often burdened with greater expectations to carry out domestic responsibilities, including tending to children and ill members of the family, said Lily Puspasari, a program management specialist at United Nations Women in Indonesia.
With schools closed and disruptions at the workplace becoming the norm, including working from home, Lily said there was bound to be “more roles expected from women”.
"Our data shows that women do domestic work four times more than men," she told the Post on Monday.
A recent UN Women report, titled The First 100 Days of the COVID-19 Outbreak in Asia and the Pacific: A Gender Lens, also highlights this impact on women, noting that across the region, "the unequal distribution of unpaid care and domestic work between women and men is a major barrier to gender equality and women’s empowerment."
The report also highlights how women were growing increasingly vulnerable economically, as they are found to be over-represented in sectors and jobs hardest hit by the COVID-19 outbreak – in manufacturing, textiles and garments, care services, hospitality and tourism – and in employment with the least protections, including in the informal domestic sector and self-employment.
It also notes that women were at an increased risk of domestic violence during quarantine measures.

main points:
- breakfast at family friends
- editing chicago/seattle video
- drive towards austin
- stop by the hospital where i was born
- stop by riverwalk and the alamo
- stop by texas state university
- stop by pho for dinner
- visit family friends in austin, and former neighbors
today i:
- woke up around 10 or 10:30am ish. i lazed in bed for a bit watching some youtube. sam kolder made such a sick video on the creative process
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAq_AL9TXOc
got out of bed and ate some breakfast, which was boiled egg + avocado spread. that was really good. then ate some dumplings
- mom and dad went out to look around the property since the house was huge. i started finishing up my edits of the chicago + seattle video, mostly just doing color correction for the rest of the video. my parents and family friend also went to pick up the rental car so i worked for like two hours
when they got back, there was a squirrel in the yard eating an orange. it was so interesting seeing it open and peel a big orange :p we took pics and videos
- ate lunch, which was xi fan and leftovers from dinner last night. solid solid :)
- i finished my video so i started rendering it and then tentatively uploaded it to youtube yay
we said good bye to the family friend and we left her house and started driving towards austin
- the first stop we made was at the hospital where i was born. mom and i got out to take a couple pictures while dad drove around trying to find parking but just ended up going in circles to wait for us. it was interesting cause i have no recollection of the hospital but my mom and her family friend (who housed us) said it was the first place i ever visited in the world which is true :p
- we drove over to the alamo to visit some touristy stuff
Tumblr media
got some pictures of the alamo, also visited the church and surrounding garden area, which was relatively small. then we walked over to the riverwalk and walked along it for a bit. there were a bunch of ducks and birds around who seemed to get their source of food from tourists. also dick’s was there which is a restaurant where the waiters/waitresses purposely act like dicks to you (from what i’ve heard)
mom wanted some ice cream so we got some in the hyatt hotel we walked through to get to the riverwalk. it was blue bell’s ice cream which seems very popular around the area. then we got some mexican food (fajitas) for our lunch at like 2:30pm. also it was happy hour so dad got a margarita for $4. the fajitas were okay ish but i guess that’s expected for touristy spots. dad said we should find local places for really good mexican food which i agree with
there were ducks and birds flying around and a bird pooped from above and it landed on my right shoulder >: O i was kind of annoyed but at least it didn’t land on my head like it did once before. i went to the bathroom to try to wash it out and it sort of worked... but there’s a white ish stain there
the people behind us who left had their table immediately ravaged by pigeons. LOL. cause they had leftover food on the table so the pigeons came and just ate all of it causing a mess
Tumblr media
- left the riverwalk area and drove the car over to texas state university where mom and dad went to school. on the drive i felt strangely relaxed. the highway was so vast and open and just straight up flat. in california it’s vast and open but in the distance you can always see mountains. here it’s just straight up flat for miles. i ended up taking a nap before we got to the university
first we drove the car over to their first apartment, which is wild!! :o mom and dad told me about how they used to bike or take the bus, or just flat out walk up the hills to get to their apt. i took some pictures of them in front of the building and then we headed towards campus
we parked the car and walked around campus, first stopping by the music building and taking some pictures. then to the dean’s office with a view. then towards the library, visiting the top 7th floor. their library is HUUUUGE. then to the math/computer science department. it was cool, i feel like mom and dad were reliving some of their college memories. they told me about when i was a baby and mom took a pic in her graduation gown near the gym, dad’s roommates biking incident (the nurse asked him who the president was since he hit his head), how they would go to study at the library, and other stuff
as we walked back to the car, i was curious what i’d feel like in 30-40 years when i go back to visit BU. mom and dad said it was great to come back and see the college campus again, just to see where they came from
- it was about 5:30pm and mom suggested we go eat pho cause it would be traffic heavy anyway. so we went to a pho 99 place about 15 minutes away from campus. ate some pho (pretty solid), then stopped by walmart to by a 12 pack of water. and also got some lemon girl scout cookies
- drove over to our old cul de sac, stopping by jackie’s parents house! it was kind of surreal being back in the neighborhood. i had very faint snippets of memories of this place and what it looked like. the proportions all seemed off though. like our old house seemed smaller in the front. but the circular part at the end of the cul de sac seemed bigger than i thought. also we saw some deer. but yeah there were so many childhood memories here. i remember i hung out with jackie a lot when we were kids
we said hi to jackie’s parents first then went to visit our neighbors since mom heard that they’re still around. we just kind of knocked on their doors since we had no contact with them though LOL
we brought wine and chatted with jeff for a bit. mom and dad caught up with him, he told us about how things were going in his life. i played with the dog for a bit and also talked about where i’m at (just recent college grad, heading to job soon, etc). i very vaguely remember him from when i was a kid but i mostly remember i used to drive a toy jeep truck with his daughter in the cul de sac
after we caught up we stopped by another neighbor’s house, dave. i don’t remember them much.. but mom and dad said we also knew them. we talked to him and his wife and they asked us to come inside. we talked again about how we were doing, how they were doing here in austin in terms of jobs, how so many businesses have opened up/traffic, etc. their daughter also came back home and talked to us too, telling us about how she traveled abroad for a year to teach english. it was crazy, i didn’t remember them too too much but their house did look kind of familiar
then we went back to jackie’s parents house around 9pm and their parents helped me get situated in my room with wifi and everything, then they went downstairs to chat. i finished making a thumbnail for the chicago/seattle video, then watched some more of sam kolder after his dope video from this morning. and chicago/seattle vlogs just to see how others compared
went downstairs to drink some soup with everyone since jackie’s dad made some. it was like overeasy egg but the inside was boiled, and rice/sweet soup. it was very yummy :D
after we finished eating they said i could go back upstairs (so understanding LOL) and i just kind of chilled looking at more chicago/seattle videos
- took a shower around 11pm. mom and dad and jackie’s parents were getting tired and they also had work tomorrow
now typing this at 12:22am. i’m excited to look at the neighborhood tomorrow morning and see it in broad daylight since it was dark by the time we got here
okay the end
a walk down memory lane today
also first time i’ve put pictures in a blog post in like months so... this is cool

Microsoft’s operations will zero-waste by 2030
Microsoft announced that it’s planning to quit creating trash from its activities by 2030. It likewise pledged to quit using single-use plastics in its packaging by 2025.
As a feature of its zero waste objectives, the company will be setting up what it's calling - Circular Centers to permit the company to recycle or using again 90% of its loss on location, rather than sending it to outsider recyclers. A year ago, Microsoft's biggest office buildings sent 3,189 metric huge amounts of waste to landfills. One of the expensive items that will be reused in-house is the workers use in Microsoft's data centers. The company additionally vowed to take out waste from its own assembling procedure, in spite of the fact that its providers won't be required to stick to a similar zero waste objectives as Microsoft.
Individuals threw out a record 53.6 million e-waste all-inclusive metric huge amounts in 2019, as indicated by a report launched in July. That figure is just expected to develop. The new duty intends to bring that down to zero throughout the following decade. In any case, comparing with trash originating from Microsoft's workplaces, e-waste from the contraptions that Microsoft and different makers produce is a lot more concerning issue. The present declaration from Microsoft won't make a major imprint in each one of those heaps of e-squander, since the company isn't yet considering itself responsible.
Designing for efficiency and pleasure, Electronics companies do a great job, however, the quick change in shopper request additionally implies that they're designed for out of date quality. Janous says, “This is sort of our first step in a journey.” He further added that there will be much more to come as we study how we can really impact that waste lifecycle. The zero-waste promise goes with another major ecological goal Microsoft set toward the start of the year being carbon negative by 2030.

KEPSA launches scheme to alleviate poverty
New Post has been published on https://newscheckz.com/kepsa-launches-scheme-alleviate-poverty/
KEPSA launches scheme to alleviate poverty
Tumblr media
The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) Foundation through Sustainable Inclusive Business; has launched an innovative and comprehensive project that will support youth and women in Mombasa to gain business skills.
Dubbed ‘Creating Opportunities and Alleviating Poverty Through Sustainable Trade (COAST)’, the project will focus on the Tudor informal settlement; aiming to create awareness on waste management and increased residents’ capacity to develop business cases through mentorship.
ALSO READ: Corteva Agriscience targets 20,000 women farmers for training
Mombasa County CEC Environment Dr. Nato Godfrey who graced the official launch of the project at Travellers Beach Hotel in Mombasa town, lauded the initiative noting that “Such inclusive business ventures will go a long way in improving the living conditions of the low-income earners in Tudor.
The county government of Mombasa is pleased to render the necessary linkages and support needed throughout the project, such as including the beneficiaries of the project into existing value chains.”
“Over 42% of Mombasa County’s population are youth aged between 15-34 years; its sheer size underscores the need for specific programs and projects targeting it.
ALSO READ: KRISHNA GROUP DELIVERS 128 LUXURIOUS UNITS IN THINDIGUA
Thanks to KEPSA and The French Embassy for considering the youth and women in Mombasa’s Tudor for the COAST Project.
Most importantly, is the choice of solid waste management and the partnerships with local communities,” Innocent Mugabe – Chief Officer, Ministry of Gender, Youth, Sports and Cultural Affairs, Mombasa County.
Mombasa county is one of the top trade and tourism hubs, contributing significantly to Kenya’s over Ksh 160 billion tourism industry.
In 2019, the county attracted 128,222 global visits, out of the more than 2 million international visits to the country.
However, despite these palms, Mombasa has over 70 informal settlement areas accounting for approximately 65% of the county’s population.
Solid waste management in most of these areas has become a challenge, especially due to poor infrastructure which makes it difficult for garbage collectors to gain access.
High unemployment rates and poverty have resulted in increased struggle for resources among residents at the bottom of the pyramid.
“We are excited about the COAST project, through which KEPSA will contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 on alleviating poverty; as well as Kenya’s vision 2030 on developing targeted pro-poor projects,” said KEPSA’s Deputy CEO, Martha Cheruto.
She added that, “We have identified a waste challenge in one of the county’s informal settlements, and we will use this project to provide sustainable solutions that will not only lead to a cleaner environment, but will also create employment opportunities among area residents.”
ALSO READ: Premier League clubs restart training
The COAST project will focus on helping women and youth in Tudor establish waste management businesses, through training and facilitation to harness their entrepreneurship skills.
It will also enhance their capacity to access financing by linking them to financial institutions; based on their business environmental impact.
The expected outcome is to alleviate the level of poverty, through an alternative source of income for the residents.
“For us, this is a blueprint to achieve a habitable and sustainable future for the beneficiaries of the COAST project. We will adopt the circular economy model in supporting entrepreneurs to establish businesses that aim to present solutions in waste management, as well as using waste as an input for production.
It is a creative and innovative approach that will address sustainable development challenges in the region,” stated Karin Boomsma, the Project Lead and Director of Sustainable Inclusive Business.
Findings show that most businesses fail within 5 to 10 years of their existence. Some of the contributing factors are the lack of business skills and financing especially for women and youth.
“Through KEPSA’s networks, we will initiate a mentorship program to facilitate learning from experts in the private sector. This will provide inspiration, a core ingredient for successful entrepreneurs,” affirmed Ebenezer Amadi, the Project Manager.
The 6-months long COAST project under the PISCCA fund, which is supported by the French Government, is anticipated to increase job creation opportunities by approximately 3%, and enhance skills in business management and financial literacy by 5%.
“The project is under the PISCCA fund which is supported by the French Embassy in Kenya, and it will bring about the economic impact in the informal settlement areas that will enable women and youth to take advantage of income-generating opportunities arising from sustainable waste management.
It aims at contributing to poverty alleviation efforts by supporting capacity building projects; and is apart from SDG 1, it is contributing to two other Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 11 on inclusive cities,” concluded Ms. Marie Ashimwe French Embassy Representative.

“Greyhound” On Target: A Review Of Tom Hanks’ New World War II Naval Drama
Tumblr media
Coming on the heels of the successful 2019 naval epic “Midway,” Tom Hanks’ equally intense and exciting “Greyhound” is on target as it chronicles a harrowing 52-hour running battle between an Allied supply convoy’s escorts and a German U-Boat pack across a remote, undefended region of the North Atlantic during World War II.
The fictional story is set in February 1942 and follows the USS Keeling (DD 548), a U.S. Navy Fletcher-class destroyer codenamed “Greyhound,” and its captain, Commander Ernest Krause, as he leads a multinational escort fleet comprising his vessel, the two British destroyers Harry and Eagle, and the Canadian Corvette Dickie.  Their mission is to protect the 37-ship Convoy HX-25 from Halifax to Liverpool as it runs the U-Boat gauntlet.

The USS Kidd stands in for the fictional USS Keeling (Greyhound) in the movie.
This was a daunting task during that early phase of the war, with America having only entered it two months before with a small, unprepared navy and obsolete technology.  The Keeling’s radar and sonar are balky, its window wipers freeze up, it’s low on fuel, and the warship does not carry enough depth charges for the job. Moreover, the wintry heavy seas of the North Atlantic are unforgiving, forcing Krause and most of his crew to fight on the Keeling’s weather deck and weapons stations while soaking wet and shivering cold.  There is no air cover either since that part of the deep ocean was beyond the reach of Allied land-based anti-submarine aircraft.  Naval planners formally named it the “Mid-Atlantic Gap” but sailors and merchant mariners simply called it the “Black Pit.”

While contending with the U-Boats, his ship’s limitations, and the environment, Krause himself also has to resolve an inner struggle with his personal frustrations, insecurities, inexperience, and even guilt in killing his German adversaries.  In his forties, over-the-hill, and still a low ranking officer, he was the victim of the peacetime Navy’s practice of “fitting and retaining” competent officers by shuffling them from one administrative assignment to another during the 1920s and 1930s without ever assigning them to a sea command. Therefore, he is acutely aware that all eyes in the convoy are upon him since this is not only his first command but also his first combat crossing of the Atlantic.
Tumblr media
Krause is emotionally hurting too since, in an early flashback, his girlfriend Evelyn had refused to move from San Francisco to the East Coast with him and accept his marriage proposal.  Her explanation that “the world has gone crazy” and that she wanted to wait until they “could be together” rang hollow.  What she was really worried about was getting married and then quickly becoming a widow, which a heartbroken Krause understands and accepts.  As a consolation, she then gives him a toy destroyer to commemorate his first command at sea and a pair of monogrammed slippers to remember her by.
Krause perseveres under these multiple burdens by drawing upon his devout Christian faith, daily prayers, and a handbill that he has posted on the mirror in his cabin quoting Hebrews 13:8 from the Bible—“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”  Ultimately, Krause proves to be quick thinking, stalwart, and tactically brilliant, as seen during his first encounter with a U-Boat. Despite his problems, he falls back upon his training and intuition and successfully deduces his enemy’s circular dogfighting path to port, orders a rapid “right full rudder” to cut it off, and then destroys it with depth charges, much to the delight of his crew and British peers.  While his men are celebrating their first kill, he takes no joy in his achievement, quietly mourning the deaths of the 50 German souls he had just sent to the bottom of the Atlantic.
Tumblr media
This was just the beginning of the Keeling’s ordeal.  Over the next two days, Krause, his crew, and the other escorts fight an increasingly desperate series of engagements with the U-Boats, which penetrate the thinly-stretched destroyer screen and pick off several of the merchantmen as they cross the Black Pit.  The lead U-Boat commander, calling himself “Grey Wolf,” taunts the Allies with blood-curdling threats and predictions of their doom over the open radio frequencies. “You and your comrades will die today,” the mysterious German skipper warns Krause in his final rant.
The Grey Wolf’s cat-and-mouse game with the Keeling is both deadly and personal but Krause eventually succeeds in his mission though not without loss.  Sleep-deprived and exhausted, Krause runs his feet bloody raw during his non-stop scrambling back and forth across the Keeling’s bridge and weatherdeck.  He can barely walk before the climactic battle with his nemesis and finally replaces his stiff leather shoes with Evelyn’s lined, warm slippers, not only easing his physical pain but also comforting himself with her virtual presence in the midst of combat.
Hanks’ story of Krause follows closely that of Cecil Scott Forester’s original character in the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd, right down to the sonar and radar bearings, the same orders, and the same combat maneuvers, blow for blow, against the same U-Boats.  One notable difference though is that Forester’s Krause is named “George” and he is much more damaged psychologically than “Ernie” in Hank’s film.  In the book George Krause suffers overwhelming guilt from a broken marriage, his wife’s infidelity, and their divorce, as well as the professional shame of a stalled career and passed over promotions.  He also has to deal with the awkwardness of commanding more experienced crew members and Allied captains in the convoy.
Tumblr media
However, both George and Ernie reveal quiet inner strength that allows them to overcome their adversity and to win both their battles and the respect of their sailors.  Each is “the man alone,” as Forester liked to call his prime characters, such as Horatio Hornblower, for whom the author is most famous.  Indeed George and Ernie embody many of the introverted Hornblower’s traits, including his introspection, his dedication to duty, his discipline, his command brilliance, and his loneliness.  Commander Krause is in effect Captain Hornblower in a World War II naval-setting, without the chronic sea sickness.
In his many books Forester (real name Cecil Louis Troughton) went to great lengths to portray his characters, their appearance, equipment, and customs and traditions in minute detail based on meticulous historical research.  In 1943, the author was able to sail as a civilian aboard the Royal Navy light cruiser HMS Penelope as it patrolled the Mediterranean Sea.  During that experience, he learned first-hand how a ship-of-war operated and made several key naval acquaintances who later served as advisors and proofreaders for his books, including the The Good Shepherd, as reflected in its exquisite accuracy.
Tom Hanks took Forester’s historical approach to heart in making Greyhound and consulted with Naval History Dr. Craig L. Symonds of the Naval War College and Marine Historian Gordon H. Laco to ensure that the film’s technical details and crew interactions and behavior were as historically accurate as possible.  He toured the U.S. Naval Academy and filmed as much as he could aboard the USS Kidd (DD 661), the only remaining Fletcher-class destroyer still in existence in its World War II configuration, currently moored as a ship museum in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  According to Symonds, one point of contention was Hanks’ desire to portray a more familiar relationship with Mess Mate George Cleveland, a black sailor who feeds and looks out for his captain when not handling ammunition at his General Quarters gunnery station.  Symonds told Hanks that this would have been impossible in the segregated World War II-era Navy which was dominated by hard-nosed, old school, class and race-conscious officers. Hanks resisted but Symonds insisted, so the producer met the historian half-way and split the difference in Greyhound, portraying Krause’s relationship with Cleveland as gentle but firm.
Other details are more authentic, from the uniforms and personal gear to the actual control knobs, lights, and wheels of the Keeling’s control panels and even its guns and their specific rates of fire.  The burial at sea scene was also accurately done too, based on Navy regulations and customs of the period, which Hanks researched from the original archived manuals.

The shootout between one of Grey Wolf’s surfaced U-Boats and the Keeling and Dickie at mid-film is based on an actual close-quarters brawl between the Canadian destroyer HMCS Assiniboine and U-210 that occurred on August 6, 1942 while the Assiniboine was escorting Convoy SC-94.  Both vessels had encountered each other by chance in the early morning mist and fog. Historian Gordon Laco described the action to USA Today, noting that “They were literally blasting each other with pistols, rifles, revolvers. The cook even came out of the galley and threw an empty case of Coca Cola bottles down the submarine hatch.”

There are a few inaccuracies though that should be noted.  The USS Keeling itself never existed, since destroyer (DD) hull #548 was canceled before construction, and the first of the Fletcher-class warships did not launch until May 1942, three months after the events of Greyhound.  It would have been more authentic to show the Keeling as an earlier Mahan-class destroyer, as Forester originally wrote it, but the Fletcher-class was likely chosen by Hanks because of the availability of the Kidd in Baton Rouge for filming. Further, radar and sonar technology was not quite as advanced as portrayed in the film, even though the U.S. Navy had been participating in convoy operations since early 1941, with the USS Reuben James (DD 245) sunk by U-552 near Iceland on October 31 of that year.
And although the Type VII U-Boats were the most widely used of the war, with 703 built, generally they would not have fought Allied warships on the surface in broad daylight unless it was absolutely necessary, the chance historical battle between the Assiniboine and U-210 notwithstanding.  Considering that a U-Boat’s chance of avoiding detection and survival was already slim, stealth was its key weapon and the darkness its ally, as was portrayed in 1981’s German film ‘Das Boot.’

A German U-boat is besieged in the Tom Hanks Greyhound movie.
Additionally, it would have been suicidal for a U-Boat commander to openly taunt destroyers on open frequencies as shown in the film and thus reveal their presence and locations.  Forester did reference one instance in The Good Shepherd in which a British officer refused to send Krause an important message over voice radio because “Jerry’s been on this circuit more than once during the night. He has an English-speaking rating who chips in with rude remarks, and I wouldn’t like him to hear this.”  This is undoubtedly the source of Hank’s plotline with the Grey Wolf’s rather childish howling, which is historically implausible, since German naval officers of the period were thorough professionals and considered to be the elite of the Kriegsmarine. They tended to follow Kriegsmarine regulations to the letter, which required strict radio silence while stalking and attacking convoys.  The submarine profession is not called the “silent service” for nothing. Consequently, there is no historical record of such taunting ever occurring, even though there are a couple of recorded incidents of U-Boats “blinking” distant destroyers with their signal lamps after dark.
And while we do catch a brief distant glimpse of a brave U-Boat captain fighting his submarine from his conning tower and his crewmen manning its guns during the Keeling-Dickie surface battle, it is also unfortunate that Hanks otherwise chose to depict the Germans collectively through the disembodied, sneering voice of the Grey Wolf, particularly in light of their more realistic portrayals in previous classic films like Das Boot and The Enemy Below.
Tumblr media
Those nitpicks aside, Greyhound is an excellent film depicting the often neglected “Battle of the Atlantic,” which was in fact the longest continuous and most complex military campaign of World War II, running from 1939 to 1945.  British Prime Minister Winston Churchill himself later wrote that “The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril. I was even more anxious about this battle than I had been about the glorious air fight called the 'Battle of Britain'.”   Indeed, 3,500 Allied merchant ships and 175 warships were sunk in the Atlantic, with 36,000 merchant mariners losing their lives, while 783 U-boats were sunk with 28,000 out of 39,000 German submariners perishing by war’s end.
Up to now, there have only been a few films focused on this crucial theater of the war, perhaps because it was previously difficult to capture its vastness and complexity before the advent of current CGI technology made it possible.  Among the most notable from a surface warfare perspective are The Cruel Sea (1953) and The Enemy Below (1956), while submarines and submariners are the focus of Das Boot (1981), U-571 (2000), and In Enemy Hands (2004).  And although current reviews of Greyhound are mixed, with many reviewers (perhaps spoiled by Midway) complaining about the film’s short length at 90 minutes and its lack of character development, and without any German voices except that of the generically evil Nazi Grey Wolf, they miss the point.  The Allied navies and the merchant mariners they protected acted in concert as a team, and because of that “all hands job”, as portrayed in the 52-hour snap shot of Greyhound, the Grey Wolf howled his last howl, portending “Wolf” Hitler’s last howl four years later in April 1945. That too was an “all hand’s job.”
