When the bell rings, indicating that a workday has come to its end, only one person obeys it while the rest slave away on their keyboards, desperate to fulfil the day’s quota. With a heavy mission to prove you’re worthier than whoever the higher-ups rejected during recruitment and three tasks still on your list of responsibilities, you remain in your seat. However, your sight follows the colleague with pretty purple eyes and strangely fitting bowl cut as he leaves the office.

“Someone’s caught your attention?” your desk mate of 6 months asks, nudging your arm. You barely know him. “Is it his devilishly charming looks that stole your heart?”

“He would be all you described if he smiled once in a while,” you comment to be polite. Please, please pick up the hint you’re not in the mood to talk, especially when you have time against you. Unfortunately, he persists even if you’re furiously typing on your keyboard.

“What’s there to smile during work?”

He has a point… your back aches and your eyes hurt from staring at the screen all day, but that still doesn’t entice you to talk to him.

“Anyways,” he continues, “If I were you, I would be curious too. Ever since he joined, he’s never worked overtime. I wonder what’s his secret to finishing his tasks. I’ve not heard any seniors complain about him either, which says something since all the seniors know how to do is complain.”

A cough is heard from behind. You straighten your back and tab through your opened windows, hoping it seems like you’ve not been listening to your desk mate’s rant. The gaze of the senior pierces through your innocent cover, but thankfully, she’s more concerned of the one who made baseless remarks.

Your desk mate gets up to follow the senior. You praise whatever force of nature brought about this luck and return to work.

If you’re quick, perhaps you can chance upon that mystery guy you saw at the neighbourhood playground. You’re certain it’s the colleague who leaves on the dot. You’ve seen his retreating figure far too many times to be mistaken, yet you can’t be certain you saw him. As the man played with a child you recognized from the hospice care where you volunteer on weekends, he emits a laugh too gentle for whatever variant of grumpy your colleague wears on his face all day.

Fueled by curiosity, you find yourself blazing through your tasks.

As you’re finishing the last task for the day, the senior gives your table a visit. She plops down a list of items with a red star at the end.

“Your reliable friend’s work,” she explains before strutting away, obviously to take revenge. You swallow a groan.

Defeated, you give up on chasing your answer today. When you’re done, the security guard is your only companion in the office. He advises you to head home since it’s late, and you plan to listen to him, yet at crossroads—your house a turn away and the playground straight ahead—you surprise yourself by staking a step forward.

The tallest tower of the playground presents itself. Not a single laughter is heard.

You should return now that you’ve confirmed you’ve missed the chance—again—but you press on.

Hidden in the shadows of the night, a person sits on the swings. His head hangs low.

When he notices your presence, he lifts his head up and you’re graced with purple eyes.

He’s crying.

In his hands is a piece of paper with the hospice care’s logo at the top. You’ve filed such documents several times, and they only spell pain. The inevitable has begun.

“Hey, um,” you start, trying to recall the words you were told when your grandmother passed away too, but they don’t feel authentic for this situation. There’s something else you needed to address first. “I won’t tell anyone.”

He gets up, crushes the paper in his hands before sliding it into his pockets.

“Good,” he breathes out, words bordering on a threat and a plea. “What are you doing here anyways? Were you stalking me?”

You feel heat rise to your face.

“I wouldn’t call it that…” you reply. “I didn’t know you’d be here.”

“You’re not very convincing when you speak as if you’ve been caught,” he points out, walking past you. He could have bumped into your shoulder, but his choice not to feels like he has the bullet to take your life and misses his shot on purpose.

“You don’t own this playground,” you bite back, tiredness from the day creeping on your tongue. Yes, you’re glad you found the answer to your mystery guy, although you wished it reveled itself without opening a can of worms. You really should have listened to the security guard. “You’re crying right in the open. Of course, someone would see you.”

He turns and narrows his eyes. That’s the grumpy face you’ve seen for months. You’re starting to wonder if you’re drunken on moonlight to have hallucinated whatever crack of vulnerability he showed.

“Whatever,” you add after you remember what he’s going through. Grief is not something to treat like a petty argument. “I’m sorry, okay? We can pretend as if this never happened.”

And true to your words, he leaves you in dust.

The next day, when the bell rings, he disappears as he normally does, except you catch the way his movements are sluggish. He barely has the energy to frown too.

The next week, his routine does not change, drastically at least. He stopped buying packets of drinks to bring home after a long day of work, but he still leaves on the dot. In fact, there are days when he leaves a few minutes earlier yet returns the next with darkened eyebags.

“You’re still always staring at him,” your desk mate of 6 months and a week notes. You ignore him lest he piles up your tasks again. This time, you’re determined to finish work before the convenient store closes, unable to see someone grapple with such devastating truth alone.

“If this is about the last time, I’m sorry okay.” Your desk mate's apology falls on death ears.

You don’t even say goodbye when you clock out before him, mind focused on doing one thing.

You leave the convenient store with a heavy load of instant noodles and snacks. If your calculations are right, it should last your greiving colleague a month.

The next day, you arrive early and place the food items on his desk.

There’s buzz around the office now. Mr Never-Smile has a secret admirer? People whisper. You’re bracing yourself for an unpleasant confrontation, but it never happens.

Instead, you receive a note on your desk a few weeks later.

author's note: this fic took a turn i did not expect, but the ending is rather cute if you think about it. i would love to expand on this one day. it talks about themes i find delicious such as grief.

yeah, thanks for the explaining. I have said it before but I haven't finished Worm (with hoe my motivation to read anything currently is I probably will never) so I didn't know about just hoe bad Sophia is written in story. And the trigger stuff is something I wouldn't even think of. Probably because Fanfics make it seem like common knowledge that parahumans get powers from something referred to as their "One Bad Day" which feels really inaccurate when it comes to characters like Taylor or Victoria. Like it makes it seems like it was just one event, The Locker and The Basket Ball Foul, respectively when it is much more. With Taylor it wa she year and a half of bullying, abuse, and isolation she suffered through the Locker was just the final metaphorical nail in he tallest literal coffin, the realization that No One will help her, and that she is Alone. And with Victoria it wasn't just her being unable to accept being failed, it was her having to deal with the constant pressure from her family that were basically expecting her to trigger at any moment, her desperate to try and get the approval of her mother which all culminated during that Basket Ball game where she gets fouled and she triggers. Ther eight also be something about her looking over and seeing Carol not paying attention but that might be a fanfic thing. No trigger event is just "One Bad Day" it this just the final event that just breaks a person. Itnot like someone will stub their toe and trigger, but it is possible for someone to trigger because ove rhte course of weeks or months constant stress has caused a building tension that culminates when they have a really shitry day and the stub their toe, spilling them over the edge. It's my opinion that Second Gen capes do actually have a "easier" time triggering, just not because it's actually easier to trigger, just that it is far easier to be in a situation where you can trigger because of the inherent instability of having a parent/parents that triggered. You are just generally under more stress that makes it easier for the requirements of a trigger to happen. It's why I don't like generic The Locker triggers in fanfics. Not because it's overused (people will bitch about shit like that and then complain that a character that isn't from Worm has been introduced) but because it completely ignores what trigger are. They aren't something to use to pull some random power out of your ass. They are thematic and relative to the trauma that causes them. With triggers I try to build them around the power. Like I have one where Taylor gains powers that escape make her into a walking volcano (probably have the post somewhere talking about where I got the idea as well tbh) And I didn't use the locker. I had her get pierced by a molten hot piece of rebar that she got hit by because she decided to go on a midnight stroll and just so happened to be in the place where Lung and The Butcher decided to start fighting. That's what she is going to be focusing on, the fire, the smoke, the smell of ash, the feeling of burning, the pain, being H U R T. Giving her a power that harnesses the very thing that hurt her, and allowing her to hurt others and keep herself from being hurt. It's also because I just really like Azarinth Healer and wanted Taylor to be able to punch and or fucking explode Lung with the powers of "The Pyroclastic Storm"

Had a long, rambling post in my drafts which I'm pretty sure has likely since been obviated by the commentary of others, but it's really interesting to me how Aisha basically picks up and carries out the remainder of Alec's telegraphed character arc after his death. Cherish shows up in the narrative when she does to remind Alec that his "fresh start" as Regent left a ton of his siblings trapped in Heartbreaker's orbit, that Heartbreaker himself is still out there; his character development over the course of the book involves becoming more and more of the kind of guy who'd eventually go back and try to resolve that in a big thematically resonant showdown. Unfortunately, as a direct result of the process of becoming that guy he gets prematurely turboexploded, so Aisha ends up being the one to sink her time and energy into resolving that dangling plot thread. And it's interesting to me because it almost reads like Aisha makes that decision thinking of the world she lives in in terms of dangling plot-threads and unfinished character arcs- narrativizing their own lives as a way of coping? I mean her last interlude is shot full of theatricality, performativity. Theatre motifs abound with the two of them in general. I dunno, there's a meta vibe to the whole thing that I'm not caffeinated enough to really try and flesh out or defend as really truly present in the text, but it feels like there's something there...

Serious,y thank you guys so much for listening and taking me seriously though. So much that I didn’t understand makes sense if I assume she’s just being mean.

I always thought that was true, that she was mean. But I begged for family therapy when I was a young teen and EVERYTHING turned into “why do you make things so hard for your poor mother?” It was weird. It was like in ANY other situation the therapist could see that each person contributes. But as soon as my mom and me were talking together, he was just… why are you angry Fierce? Why does this upset you so much?

And I’d be sitting there like well. He’s the therapist, I guess I really am just very mean.I guess just wanting it to stop IS too much to ask.

I remember so many situations where I was just like wait, how does itNOT MAKE SENSE THAT I’M ANGRY? Like I legit could not figure out why my reactions didn’t make sense. Like maybe they were overreactions (I think no, I’ve always thought no, but the world around me is so like, no, everyone owes the person who is the most hurt. It’s why those narcissism posts dive me around the bend—they’re not blameworthy for not empathizing with me because they can’t the poor dears but somehow, because I CAN empathize, I’m blameworthy as soon as i”m too tired and tell people to just fuck off. But such is How thing work, someone is Privileged and someone is Not. The hurt party is the most disabled one. Never mind that we don’t actually ever measure this so we’re all just lying anyway.)

but i couldn’t figure out why it was never “you’re pissed off, that’s normal,” just “why can’t you give her a break?”

Best I can figure it’s that after a certain point i don’t HAVE a break to give.

CPom podcast- This Week in Skating

Anthony had surgery on the talus joint in his right ankle - 6 weeks no weight on the ankle. spent post-surgery in Colorado Springs. It was 10-12 weeks to walk without crutches or a boot. Started with skating 20 min only on two feet for the first week. difficult knowing he could do more but knew itnot benefit him in the long run. They made sure the return to the ice was correct. only finished choreography and were able to do run throughs mid August 2022

Scott and the medical staff kept him in it, motivated him. when things got tough- seeing competitors full on in their prep and season was difficult, but his team helped him, said you're on your own plan, that they had a heavy 2nd half of the season planned, and now is for recovery and getting better. Anthony- Christina was so patient with me. She skated by herself for months. Having everyone around me like that helped me in the long run.

C: trusting the process. went in July to MTL to get choreo-- they were getting starting choreo while everyone else was getting ready for camps. MF said you need to take your time, don't need to skate full out when you're just learning steps. that calmness helped

Set some goals at Champs Camp- it was a distant goal, a distant dream to go to Worlds, almost just like a dream- they were skipping elements at Champs Camp because they weren't ready. and here they are now in Montreal doing run throughs with some of the best in the world now- it's an honor. they took it one competition at a time.

When did you find out you were going to Worlds? After 4CC all the coaches talked and told them to be ready just in case. learned the week HB announced their withdrawal that they were going

They've made a lot of changes in the RD, small ones in the FD. loved not having the pattern - a blessing that they didn't have the compulsary dance because training the pattern usually takes an hour a day, hour and a half-- so with this injury not having to do the drilling, give the effort and time for the season they've had- loved not having the compulsory. usually they really focus on key points- with the choreo step- adds life to the program.

Changed coaches and moved to London-- 13 min

Time for a new environment and new coaches. Made the decision to leave after Nationals in 2021. Spoke a lot with Scott and Patch who told them the transition would be difficult because the approach was very different. It was really hard- last year you saw some growing pains. This year we feel more comfortable, coming into our own, skating better.

Being with a coach so long, it's hard to change everyting- everything we learned was with Igor. New environment, new style was difficult. How well we're doing now is the payment for that- we had to learn, to grow, get comfortable, also the addition of Madi and Adrian was great- put a bow on the new training camp, helped in a big way.

How have they helped you this season- C: Helped so much- I'm so happy to have Madi work with me every day- she's truly the best female skater. Everything from how she handles the partner to the way she skates and presents herself- having her teach me every day is so important and so so helpful. And i don't think we would have had the season we had without her or Adrian

A: they're extremely hard workers- let's say Scott gives them Monday off, and they're in Toronto, they'll come home early and work from home and fill documents and this and that. they're truly embracing this new path of life, they're fully committed, and the energy they bring is just fantastic. I don't think we'd have the results and the programs we have now if it weren't for them
