ANIMAL COLLECTIVE returned this year w/ ‘TIME SKIFFS,’ one of their finest offerings to date & it found the long running & geographically scattered outfit being all presently accounted for while reestablishing their position as they once again found that sweet spot between abstract maximalism & sunny PsychPop.

‘YOU SLEEP WHILE THEY WATCH’ was the phenomenal & long gestated debut album from BRADY & it found the Chicago-based quartet bringing their “perfect blend of hick shit, innuendo, & a sad story” mantra across 8 tracks of slow_coring, richly detailed & post_grunging Sabbath-for-the-basement-set DoomRawk.

‘POMPEII’ found CATE LE BON bringing her finest offering to date as the Welsh artist channeled all the eccentric greats of yore from Bowie to Kate Bush while sounding wholly her own & did so by flexing a perkily ethereal & dialed-in focus across 9 tracks of fully realized, warmly textured & aesthetically fluent ArtPop.

Looking for that quintessential 2022 album, a set of songs that nailed the status quo while filling you with that unbearable dread… Well look no further than CHAT PILE’s latest LP titled ‘GOD’S COUNTRY’ because that shit was filled to the brim w/ an unending void which is soundtracked by a wholly on-brand & OKC-addled mix of sludge, noise, doom, punk, noise & 90s AltRawk.

CLOAKROOM returned w/ their finest album to date w/ the spaciously lush ‘DISSOLUTION WAVE’ & it found the Northwest Indiana-based trio reaching their optimal peak by finding THEE balance, one that bridged many_a_doomed genre tags under once perfectly gloomed umbrella as they fit comfortably alongside such luminaries as HUM/Failure & amongst their Nu_Gazing peers.

‘PLASTIC SUN’ (@alacarterecords_) is the latest album from @plightnyc & it offers up 10 tracks of guitar-driven fervor that seamlessly pulls many a “rock” genres under its umbrella from slow_coring Alt, rangy post_grunge & Indie-tinged Emo.

The NY-based quartet of Matt Curtis (guitar), Anthony Perry (guitar), Alden Farrar (bass) & Andy Rapp (drums) are part of healthy & burgeoning “don’t call it a comeback because it near went away” Alternative rock scene… each year we’re told guitar music is DED (something something Soundcloud rap) yet here we are championing another batch of deliciously bummer ass tunage.

Yes, sad boys w/ guitars pouring their feelings out while wearing their hearts on their sleeves has all been done before but so has literally every GD thing under the (plastic) sun… turns out there’s still is & will always be place for this kind of EMOting.

“Dead End World” kicks things off in proper feedback’d fashion while “Reverie” is the dour lament we’ve been needing, one that broods & slow cores its way across a quietly/loud 3:45 clip .

“Heat Lamp” & “Common Thief” are crunchy ass examples of what Plight do so well: being cowards, getting in over their heads & calling it quits over some catchy as all get out & sweetly bummed riffage.

“Bedhead” is all delicate SlowCore meets soft_grunge while album highlight “Ritual” is Nada Surf’s moodier suburban Goth cousin as “Marker” & “Beside Yourself” close things out, the former w/ its delicate guitar lines weaving between stacks of distortion, sneaky harmonies & thiccc low-ends and the latter’s dream_popping qualities meets quiet/loud dynamics serves as the ideal comedowning bookend.

// Dedicated to all the true 7”ers… “MYTHIC DAWN” was QYBURN’s gothic opus as the LA-based artist paid homage to his mystical prog heroes but packed plenty of RealNewWave touchstones & a club-ready beat while mixing in plenty of percolating synth & medieval organ across an epic 10 min clip. “TIED” found TOPOGRAPHIES’ seamlessly mixing in the brooding gloom of gothically driven post_punk while adding some downright danceable textures as the SF trio brought the rumbling low-ends, serrating six-strings & clouds of dream_poppin synth. “HEART OF THE SPIDER” was a new standalone single from VINCENT CHRIST & it found the London-based artist/producer “holding down the entire summer” as he strut & vamped across 2 ½ mins of street-leaning post_punk. YEAHRS returned w/ a new standalone single titled “GHOST” & it found the Berlin-based quartet bringing all kinds of somber mood across a 4+ mins of post_grunging NuGaze chockfull of dream_poppin swirl, six-stringing haze & anchored low-ends. YOUR LABOUR dropped a new standalone single titled “I KNOW THERE’S THINGS THAT YOU WANT ME TO SAY” & it found the LA-based artist bringing a vibe that stretches across damn near 5 mins of droned out Goth meets AnCo-esque PsychPop.
