The Real Life Candyman: Ronald Clark O’Bryan

Ronald Clark O’Bryan, known as the real life “Candy Man” and the “Man Who Killed Halloween” was born on October 19, 1944. He lived with his wife, Daynene in Deer Park, Texas. The O’Bryan’s had two children, a son named Timothy born on April 5, 1966 and a daughter Elizabeth, born in 1969. 
Ronald worked as an optician at Texas State Optical in Sharpstown, Houston. He was known in his community as a nice guy, and was a deacon at the Second Baptist Church. He sang in the choir and was in charge of the local bus program. 
On Halloween night, 1974, Ronald took Timothy and Elizabeth trick or treating in a neighbourhood in Pasadena, Texas. Also with them was one of their neighbours and his two children. The children went up to one particular house and knocked on the door, but had gotten no answer. The children waited for a minute to see if anyone would come to the door, but soon became impatient and ended up running off to the next home. While the children went to the next house, Ronald O’Bryan stayed behind before eventually catching up with the group. 
Ronald claimed that the occupant of the house eventually did answer the door and had given him 5 Pixy Stixs for the kids. Ronald had given one Pixy Stix to each of the neighbours children, as well as one to Timothy and Elizabeth. When Ronald got home he ended up giving the 5th Pixy Stix to a 10 year old boy who he knew from his church. 
Timothy asked to eat some of his candy, as kids usually do after trick or treating. According to Ronald, Timothy himself chose the Pixy Stix as his treat before bed. Timothy had trouble getting the actual powder out of the stick, so Ronald helped him loosen it up enough that he could eat some. Timothy ate some of the powder but complained that it had a bitter taste to it, not it’s normal sour and fun taste. 
Ronald gave Timothy some Kool-Aid to wash away the bitter taste, and within minutes Timothy complained that he had a stomach ache and went into the bathroom where he began to violently vomit and started convulsing. Ronald said that he held Timothy in his arms before he went limp. Timothy died while on his way to the hospital less than an hour after he had eaten the candy. 
It was determined that Timothy O’Bryan had died from poisoned Halloween candy and this led to the entire community fearing the worst, that their own children were at risk and that some sick person living amongst them was poisoning Halloween candy to give out to children. The Pixy Stix that Timothy had consumed had enough cyanide in it to kill two adults, and the other Stix had enough in them to kill 3-4 adults. 
Multiple parents handed in their children’s Halloween candy to the police to be examined but they did not find any traces of poison in any of it. The autopsy revealed that the Pixy Stix that Timothy had eaten was laced with a fatal dose of potassium cyanide. None of the other children who had received Pixy Stix from Ronald had consumed them.
The 10 year old boy from church who had received the 5th Pixy Stixs’ parents were notified and they became frantic when they could find the candy in their house at first. The parents rushed to the boy’s room, to find him sleeping with the unopened Pixy Stix in his hand. He had had trouble opening the Pixy Stix just like Timothy had and it appeared that he had given up and fallen asleep. 
All of the Pixy Stix had been stapled shut, which explains why the 10 year old boy and Timothy had had trouble opening them. 
The police initially believed that the house who had given out the Pixy Stix that night was the person responsible so they asked Ronald what house he received them from. Ronald could not remember the house where he got them from, and police began to be suspicious of that since Ronald and the other neighbour had only taken their kids down two streets due to the rain that night. 
The police visited all of the homes on route and found that none of them had given out Pixy Stix for Halloween. Ronald walked the neighbourhood with the police three different times, before suddenly claiming to remember the house where he had gotten the candy from. Ronald claimed the owner of the house had not had their lights on, but cracked the door open and handed Ronald the 5 Pixy Stix, without Ronald seeing who he was. 
Ronald claimed the man had a hairy arm and that was the only part of him that he had seen. The home owner was a man named Courtney Melvin who was an air traffic controller at the airport. Courtney had been at work until 11 pm on October 31, 1974, so he hadn’t even been giving out candy that night. Nearly 200 people confirmed that Courtney was at work that night and police ruled him out as a suspect. 
Police began to really look into Ronald O’Bryan after learning some suspicious information about him. Ronald was over $100,000 (about $250,000) in debt and had a history of not being able to keep a job. In the last 10 years, Ronald had had 21 different jobs. Around the time that he was arrested, Ronald had been suspected of stealing at the Texas State Optical and was close to being fired, his car was about to be repossessed, he had defaulted on several bank loans as well as the family home had been foreclosed on. 
Ronald had taken out life insurance policies on both of his children in the months before Timothy’s death. In January 1974, he had taken out $10,000 life insurance policies on both Timothy and Elizabeth. In September 1974, one month before Timothy died, Ronald had taken out an additional $20,000 on both children. 
A few days before Timothy died, Ronald had taken out another $20,000 on both children. The policies totalled to be about $60,000. Daynene O’Bryan claimed she was unaware of the insurance policies that had been taken out. It was then discovered that on November 1, 1974, one day after Timothy’s death, Ronald had called the insurance company to collect the polices he had taken out on Timothy. 
Ronald had visited a chemical supply store in Houston before Halloween but left without purchasing anything because he realized the smallest amount available to purchase was 5 pounds. Police began to theorize that Ronald had laced the candy with poison to kill his children and collect the insurance policy money. He had given the other children the candy to cover up his crimes. Police questioned Ronald repeatedly but he claimed he was innocent. 
Ronald O’Bryan was arrested for his son’s murder on November 5, 1974. He was indicted on one count of capital murder and four counts of attempted murder. He pleaded guilty. 
The trial began in Houston on May 5, 1975. A chemist had testified that in summer of 1973, Ronald had contacted him and asked him how much cyanide would be fatal. A chemical supply salesman also claimed to have spoken to Ronald, asking him how to purchase cyanide. Others claimed that in the months before the murder, Ronald often talked about cyanide and spoke about how much would kill a person. 
Ronald’s sister in law and brother in law testified that on the day of Timothy’s funeral Ronald was talking about using the life insurance policy money to take a family vacation and buy other things. Daynene O’Bryan testified that Timothy had not chosen the Pixy Stix to eat that night, that Ronald had forced him to choose it. 
On June 3, 1975, the jury deliberated for 46 minutes before making a decision, finding Ronald O’Bryan guilty of all 5 counts. The jury then deliberated for 71 minutes, before sentencing him to death by electrocution. Shortly after being convicted, Daynene O’Bryan filed for divorce and later remarried, with her new husband adopting Elizabeth as his own. 
The case gained national media attention and Ronald was dubbed “The Candyman” by many. People just could not believe that a man would murder his own son on Halloween night through poisoned candy.  
Ronald O’Bryan was sent to the Ellis I Unit and according to others he was hated on death row by the other inmates for killing his son and had no friends. 
Ronald’s first execution date was set for August 8, 1980 but his attorney petitioned for a stay of execution which was granted. His second date was scheduled for May 25, 1982, though this date was also postponed. A judge then scheduled the execution for October 31, 1982, on the 8th anniversary of Timothy O’Bryan’s death. This judge also offered to personally drive Ronald to the execution, which was to be by lethal injection. 
The Supreme Court then delayed this execution date again, giving O’Bryan a chance to get a new trial. The 4th date was scheduled to be March 31, 984. Ronald’s lawyer tried to get another stay of execution, claiming lethal injection was a cruel and unusual punishment. The request was denied on March 28. 
On March 31, 1984, shorty after midnight, Ronald O’Bryan died by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit. Ronald maintained his innocence the entire time, and a crowd of 300 people gathered outside the prison and cheered, while others called out “Trick or Treat!” Candy was thrown at anti-death penalty demonstrators. 
Ronald O’Bryan is buried in Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas. Timothy O’Bryan is buried in a different cemetery in Houston. 
This story has lived on to be one of the most horrific deaths on Halloween, with many parents still to this day checking their children’s Halloween candy for razor blades or already opened packages. It might make you think twice during this spooky season.

The Delights of Poison
Post 1
What’s covered: 3 different types of poisons you can use in your stories to kill off characters, plus what these poisons do and how they can be utilised by your characters. (sources are at the bottom of this post)
Hello fellow writers and welcome to the glorious art of poison, an area of murder I reckon is most overlooked. When you think of murder, you probably imagine guns, knives, axes, etc. The problem with these tools? They’re messy, they’re gory, they’re easily traced. Unlike poison. I personally love writing murder-by-poison just because there are so many different ways you can use them. You want a long-lasting, painful death, to make your characters suffer? Poison’s got your back. You want a slow and quiet death, so you can easily escape the crime scene and be in a different country by the time the victim is even dead? Poison is knocking on your door.
Here is a list of my top three favourite poisons to use in your writing.
First, honourable mentions: Thallium, Polonium-210, Mercury
Coming in at number 3, we have arsenic. Perfect murder weapon if you’re writing a story set sometime in the past (i.e 1880′s) , where detection of arsenic was much harder and slower than it is today with modern technology. If you’re writing a modern-set story, I’d personally stay clear of arsenic. It is too easily detected and isn’t used as often as it was throughout human history. 
Arsenic is a metalloid (Atomic Number 33). When mixed into food or drink, it is colourless, odourless and tasteless. This means characters can easily be tricked into consuming it. Symptoms of a large dose resemble fatal food poisoning, meaning that detection of the poison may be overlooked as a bad serve of chicken at a restaurant. However, given in smaller doses over a large period of time, symptoms of arsenic poisoning are subtle and slow-progressing (perfect if your killer needs a quick getaway- they can be on the other side of the planet before anyone suspects a thing) including confusion, weakness, paralysis and death. 
Arsenic is absorbed through the small intestine. The body mistakenly substitutes arsenic for phosphate. This causes havoc in 200 enzyme-based systems in the body, that are necessary for metabolism to function. 
In second place, we’ve listed Ethylene Glycol. Ethylene Glycol is sweet tasting, (although we would not recommend trying this theory for yourself- it is number 2 on a list of best poisons for a reason). It’s also used as antifreeze in cars which means it’s readily available for most people (well, how convenient). 
Your character’s body will seem fine for a few hours after ingesting this poison, when actually, their body will be breaking down the poison into other toxic substances. Eventually, your character will feel groggy, tired and fatigued, experience abdominal pain and then slip into a coma. 
A by-product that ethylene glycose breaks down into is glycolic acid. This causes a dangerous and fatal condition called metabolic acidosis. This is when someone’s blood becomes too acidic, preventing all chemical reactions that make up their metabolism from functioning as they should. It also creates calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys, which literally tear up tissues in the kidney. Sounds delightful. 
And finally, cyanide takes first place. Cyanide is often said to be the most deadly poison. It’s incredibly fast acting- a big enough dose in a variety of forms can kill in hours and even minutes. It can be tested for in blood, but the patient would be long dead before lab results were able to come in. Cyanide is any chemical that has a carbon-nitrogen bond, and not all these chemicals are poisonous. In fact, cyanide can be found in foods like almonds and soy, and they are completely safe to consume. It’s also a by-product of metabolism in our human bodies! We exhale it in small amounts when we breathe. However, cyanide does come in deadly forms, including:
Hydrogen cyanide: pale blue or colourless liquid or gas
Sodium cyanide: a white powder
Potassium cyanide: also a white powder
Important note: Cyanide in all forms is said to smell like bitter almonds. 
Teachable Moment: You’re likely to find these poisonous substances in burning buildings/ fires.
Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include weakness and fatigue, difficulty breathing, nausea, seizures, cardiac arrest, headaches and confusion, fainting/ passing out and ultimately, death. A character’s symptoms will vary depending on the size of the dosage, the form of cyanide and the length of their exposure. 
Acute Cyanide Poisoning: Quite rare, and usually from accidental exposure. Symptoms will be sudden and severe, including cardiac arrest, seizures, fainting and breathing difficulties. 
Chronic Cyanide Poisoning: large amounts of exposure to hydrogen cyanide (specifically, 20-40 parts per million) of a long period of time. Symptoms gradually increase in severity over time. Primary symptoms include vertigo, headaches, flushed skin, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. Secondary symptoms may include dilated pupils, weak and rapid pulse, difficulty breathing (shallow and slow) and clammy skin. Condition left untreated may lead to comatose states, blue lips and skin, irregular heart rate and death. 
Cyanide in small doses may not be deadly, as the body can get rid of the poison by sticking a sulphur ion onto it, converting the cyanide into a chemical called thiocyanate, which can exit the body through urination. However, in large doses, the body gets so overwhelmed it can’t turn all the cyanide into thiocyanate. This starts preventing cells from using oxygen and eventually, these cells begin to die off. Lack of oxygen means that the heart, respiratory system and central nervous system (the spinal cord and brain) can’t function properly.

1. CYANIDE
Form: In liquid form, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is also known as prussic acid. Pure hydrogen cyanide is a gas usually made by mixing an acid with cyanide salts. It is more commonly found in the form of sodium, potassium, or calcium salts, which are crystalline materials. Industrial cyanide can take the form of large nuggets called “cyanide eggs.” 
Color: Sodium and potassium salts of HCN are white. 
Odor: It is supposed to elicit the odor of almonds. However, 40–60% of the population cannot detect the odor because of a genetic inability—a form of “odor blindness.” 
Solubility: Salts of cyanide are easily dissolved in aqueous liquids. Acidic liquids would cause the release of some HCN gas. 
Taste: Salts of cyanide have a bitter taste and can have a mild corrosive action on tissues. 
Source: Fumigants ( a chemical that produces fumes used to disinfect or purify an area ), insecticides, rodenticides, metal polishes (especially silver polish), electroplating (metal coating) solutions, metallurgy (purifaction) for the extraction of gold and silver from ore, photographic processing, jewelers, and chemical laboratories. Cyanide is contained as cyanogenic glycosides inside the pits and seeds of certain plants of the genus Prunus (e.g., cherry, peach, almond, cassava, and apricot). 
Cyanide can also be produced by the action of a flame on the synthetic plastic materials polyurethane and polyacrylonitrile. In addition, it is found as part of the intravenous antihypertensive drug molecule sodium nitroprusside (Nipride®). Cyanide is used in the most commonly employed method of synthesizing phencyclidine (PCP). 
Lethal Dose: Acute, 270 ppm (air), 50 mg (HCN), 200–300 mg (NaCN or KCN); chronic, unknown in all forms. 
How It Kills: Cyanide shuts down respiration at the cellular level by inactivating essential enzymes, resulting in metabolic asphyxiation (deprivation of oxygen). Critical effects are on those organs most sensitive to oxygen deprivation, the brain and heart.
Poison Notes: When providing mouth-to-mouth respiration support to a victim, care must be taken to avoid contaminating oneself. A toxidrome (pattern of symptoms) has been established for cyanide intoxication and includes altered mental status, mydriasis (dilated pupils), abnormal respiratory pattern, low systolic blood pressure (how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when the heart beats), increased heart rate, metabolic acidosis ( an excessively acid condition of the body fluids or tissues), and a large increase in blood lactate (product produced in the breakdown of glucose). 
Often administered to victim in food or drink. 
Symptoms
Symptom Onset Time Interval: Immediate (as little as 30 s). Few poisons are as rapidly lethal. 
Symptoms—Acute: Headache, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and confusion. These initial symptoms are rapidly followed by seizures, coma, gasping respirations, and cardiovascular collapse. 
Symptoms—Chronic: Not applicable. 
Disease Confusion: Heart attack, acute asthmatic attack. 
Victim Notes: An abrupt onset of profound symptoms after exposure is classic for cyanide exposure.
2. SODIUM FLUOROACETATE
Form: Looks like flour or baking soda. 
Sodium fluoroacetate (also known as sodium monofluoroacetate, Furatol, Ratbane 1080, or Compound 1080). 
Another compound is Sodium fluoroacetamide (also known as Fluorakil, Fussol, Megarox, ancock, or Compound 1081). It is also the toxic constituent of the South African plant Giftblaar (Dichapetalum cymosum). 
Color: White, crystalline compound. 
Odor: Odorless. 
Solubility: 1080 is very water soluble but has a low solubility in ethanol. 
Taste: 1080 is mostly tasteless, but very dilute solutions may have a vinegar-like taste, owing to the acetate component. 
Source: Pesticides, rodent poison, and predator (coyote) poison. NOTE: It is sold only to licensed pest-control operators and others qualified by training and experience in rodent-control procedures. It is usually mixed with black dye and added to grain baits. 
Lethal Dose: acute, 2–10 mg/kg, 700 mg/150-lb victim; chronic, not applicable.
How It Kills: The salt’s metabolite, fluorocitrate, blocks normal enzyme mechanisms in the body, acting mainly on the heart and central nervous system. 
Poison Notes: As little as 1 mg of 1080 is sufficient to cause serious poisoning. This is one of the most toxic substances known, and there is no specific antidote.
Administered: 1080 can be administered to the victim in food or drink. It can also be absorbed through broken skin. 
Symptoms
Symptom Onset Time Interval: Symptoms are delayed while the body converts the compound into the more toxic metabolite. 
Compound 1080: from 30 min to several hours Compound 1081: slower onset of symptoms. 
Symptoms—Acute: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, confusion, seizures, lethargy, coma, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrhythmias. 
Disease Confusion: Gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines), viral infection, heart attack. 
3. STRYCHNINE
Form: Strychnine is an alkaloidal plant compound obtained from the tree Strychnos nux-vomica. The seeds are gray-green discs (1-in. in diameter, 0.25-in. thick at the rim) with a central depression and a satin-like appearance. Pure strychnine alkaloid is a white powder. 
Color: White, crystalline powder. 
Odor: None that is characteristic. 
Solubility: Soluble in aqueous solutions. 
Taste: Strychnine is extremely bitter, with a taste that is detectable at a dilution of 1:100,000. Strychnine could be administered in alcohol if the victim is accustomed to bitter drinks (e.g., tonic water). Strychnine can also be introduced into foods that normally have a sour or bitter taste.
Source: Rodenticides (concentrations >0.5% are currently distributed only to licensed exterminators). Strychnine is sometimes found as an adulterant in illicit drugs. At one time, strychnine was sold over the counter as an ingredient in a variety of stimulant tonics and laxatives. 
Lethal Dose: Acute, 5–8 mg/kg, 30–300 mg (oral); chronic, unknown. 
How It Kills: Respiratory arrest. 
Victim of Strychnine Administered: Can be given in food, beverages, or medications. 
Symptoms
Symptom Onset Time Interval: 15–30 min (oral route), 5 min (iv or nasal route). 
Symptoms—Acute: Muscle stiffness and painful cramps, which precede generalized muscle contractions. The victim’s body may take the form of an arch (with only the head and heels touching the floor)—this is called an “opisthotonic” convulsion. The face may be drawn into a forced smile or sardonic grin called “risus sardonicus.” The muscle contractions (spasms) are intermittent and can be easily triggered by emotional or physical stimuli (sound, touch, light). Death is usually owing to respiratory arrest.
Disease Confusion: Grand mal seizures, tetanus.
