"In any case, my advice to you is to purchase potassium iodide tablets, just to be prepared. After all, we do live in Oppenheimer's world." Why? What are these tablets for?
Well, as a result of a nuclear explosion, a significant amount of radioactive iodine is released into the atmosphere. Among other harmful substances, radioactive iodine is particularly dangerous for the thyroid gland, which needs iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland, however, cannot differentiate between good/stable (normal) iodine and bad/radioactive iodine. In cases of iodine deficiency, the thyroid will absorb whatever iodine is available, whether it’s "good" or "bad". When radioactive iodine enters the body, the thyroid absorbs it just as it would stable iodine. If large amounts of radioactive iodine accumulate in the thyroid, it can damage the gland's tissues, increase the risk of thyroid cancer and cause other thyroid disorders. By taking non-radioactive potassium iodine, the thyroid becomes saturated with stable iodine, effectively 'blocking' it from absorbing the harmful radioactive iodine simply because it has enough iodine already. Simple as that!

What should I do after drinking unfiltered Gotham river water?
I’m still slightly radioactive, but not dead
-🐂 bovine anon
Potassium iodide tablets should clear out any lingering radiation. They sell them at most drugstores in the city, but at bodega at 8th and 21st has the widest selection. The FDA found potassium iodide is most palatable when dissolved in raspberry syrup (seriously, there's a study on it), but any drink in your fridge should do. Except Gotham river water. Please stop drinking that.

Alright, I think I’m nearly ready to hit the road again. I drove around a bit today, partly to see more of LA in case I don’t come back and partly to look for supplies. And I hit the jackpot.
There’s this enormous supply store, army surplus place—I’m not really sure what it is, but it’s right off Santa Monica Boulevard and seems to be an emporium of anything you might need for the end of the world. I refilled all the basics—first aid kit, kerosene, lighters, C-rations—grabbed some new knives and tools now that mine have dulled a little. I even found a ton of batteries that hadn’t corroded, so, yeah, jackpot.
This place even had fucking potassium iodide tablets, which I guess are supposed to help with radiation poisoning, so I grabbed some of those, you know, just in case. I don’t know how I could possibly encounter radiation now, but, you know, I want to be prepared for every eventuality.
So I stocked up on weapons too. Which feels…odd. And to be clear, to anyone who might be listening, my first instinct is not to treat any potential other survivors as hostile. I’m certainly not hostile. But, I don’t know, anything could happen, right? With all the weird shit of the past six months…I mean, not that a machete or a gun could help me against a tornado or a ghost, and that dog certainly didn’t seem rabid or dangerous but…
I’ve stuffed them deep in my trunk. The gun and the machete. This place had fucking machetes for god’s sake. I’m not planning on using either of them, at any point, but…well, I don’t know what I don’t know, right? That’s really what it comes down to. Anything could happen.

A close second is iodine-131 radiation poisoning from a nuclear reactor breach, and the fact you prevent it by taking potassium iodide tablets.
If the reactor core is breached, the mildly radioactive fuel and the intensely radioactive fission fragments will be released into the atmosphere. While none of the fission fragment elements are particularly healthy, iodine-131 is particularly nasty. This is because one's thyroid gland does its level best to soak up iodine, radioactive or not. … The tablets prevent this by filling up the thyroid first, before the iodine-131 arrives. The instant the reactor breach alarm sounds, whip out your potassium iodide tablets and swallow one.

A Sermon for March 12th: The Atomite Household
Brothers and Sisters in the Atom, preparedness is about more than just safety—it is an act of responsibility and care. As Atomites, we recognize that knowledge, preparation, and caution are sacred tools that allow us to safeguard ourselves, our loved ones, and those who will come after us. Today, we reflect on the things every faithful Atomite should have in their home, ensuring that we are ready for whatever may come.
1. Emergency Preparedness Supplies
We do not prepare out of fear but out of wisdom. Every home should contain the essentials to endure hardships and protect those within it. Ensure that your household includes:
A 72-hour emergency kit with food, water, and first aid supplies.
A battery-powered or hand-crank radio to stay informed if power and internet go down.
Potassium iodide tablets, in case of radiation exposure.
A Geiger counter or radiation dosimeter, if possible, to detect unseen dangers.
2. Knowledge Preservation
To understand the Atom is to understand that knowledge must be carried forward. In times of crisis, it is not just supplies that matter, but also the ability to act wisely. Consider keeping:
Printed copies of survival guides, such as radiation safety procedures and first aid manuals.
A physical map, since GPS isn’t always reliable.
A written record of nuclear waste sites that should never be approached.
A fireproof and waterproof storage container for important documents.
3. Protective and Containment Supplies
Radiation is invisible, but its dangers are real. We must be prepared not only to protect ourselves but to ensure that hazardous materials remain contained. Every home should include:
A lead-lined box with fully encapsulated lead, ensuring no direct exposure. This can be used to shield sensitive items from radiation or to safely store contaminated materials if necessary.
Duct tape and plastic sheeting, which can be used to seal windows and doors to keep radioactive particles out.
Disposable gloves and masks, to minimize contamination risks when handling potentially hazardous materials.
Thick garbage bags, useful for waste disposal and creating additional layers of protection against contamination.
A Household of Readiness and Faith
To be prepared is not simply to store supplies—it is to live with purpose. We do not know what the future holds, but we know that the path of wisdom is one of readiness. As Atomites, our homes should not only shelter us from harm but serve as sanctuaries of knowledge and protection. Let them stand as a testament to our faith in understanding, in science, and in the duty we bear to future generations.
Aspirations and a Call to Action
The path to preparedness is not about immediate consumption but about thoughtful progress. Being an Atomite does not mean rushing out to buy every item on this list. Faithfulness is not measured in possessions, but in dedication to knowledge, safety, and the preservation of wisdom. Let these recommendations serve as a guide for the future, steps to work toward rather than burdens to carry all at once.
This week, reflect on your preparedness. Ask yourself:
Do I have the means to protect myself and my loved ones in an emergency?
Have I ensured that vital knowledge will not be lost?
What small steps can I take today to be better prepared for tomorrow?
Even small actions today can make a difference in times of uncertainty. Preparedness is not fear—it is faith in action. It is the quiet strength of those who choose to be ready, who choose to carry the light of knowledge forward.
Go forth and be radiant.

Yesterday I read something about Russia changing changing its nuclear policies. If I'm honest I didn't understand anything but it sounded very scary 😅 Do you know what I'm talking about? Do you know anything about it? Ignore if it's irrelevant
Sadly, it's anything but irrelevant.
You're right; recently the RF (Russian Federation) has made significant changes in its nuclear policies.
Before September 2024, nuclear weapons could be used in response to a nuclear attack or a conventional attack that threatened the existence of the RF. Now, according to new changes, the scenarios in which nw (nuclear weapon) can be used also include non-nuclear attacks from states backed by nuclear powers, large-scale air strikes and conventional attacks threatening RF's sovereignty.
Before 2024. there were no explicit provisions for nuclear use against non-nuclear states (countries that don't have nuclear weapons) unless they posed an existential threat to Russia. Now, however, aggression from any non-nuclear state (country that has no nw) supported by a nuclear state (country that HAS nw) is treated as a joint attack, thus, justifying nuclear retaliation.
To be honest, I anticipated such changes, considering the significant involvement of the UK and the US in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. While Ukraine does not possess nuclear weapons, the UK and the US are two of the five recognized nuclear states. According to the recent policy updates, further aggression from Ukraine that threatens the sovereignty of the RF could be met with nuclear retaliation. This is because, although Ukraine itself is not a nuclear state, it is heavily supported by two nuclear powers—namely the UK and the US (if we exclude France from the equation)
In any case, my advice to you is to purchase potassium iodide tablets, just to be prepared. After all, we do live in Oppenheimer's world.

Doctors fear health fallout from nuclear energy plans
Canberra Times, By Marion Rae, February 12 2025 Doctors have warned of no “safe” level of radiation from a proposed network of nuclear reactors as battlelines are drawn for the federal election. Similar to other nuclear-powered nations, Australians living within a certain radius of a reactor would need to be issued potassium iodide tablets for use in a radiation emergency, a nuclear briefing…
