“RUN ON FOR A LONG TIME"
by Emily Ding
"Utilizing vivid color, fluid movement, layered texture, and bold imagery," Austin creative service source @SprATX says Emily Ding's work showcases understanding and wisdom beyond her years. "Drawing inspiration from flora, fauna, and human temperament" Ding incorporates people and creatures into visual narratives that "communicate emotions and experiences." In 2018, painting in an alley off of Lancaster Blvd for @PowWowAV Ding used the timeless tale of the hare and the tortoise to tell a deeper story for our time. "As the two competitors race forward" she says, "they fail to see that they'll both stop short because they have not been able to reconcile their differences." @_emilyding/

LANCASTER, CA
by Super A
Dutch artist Stefan Thelen, aka Super A, uses traditional painting techniques and his knack for design, says Museum of Art and History (MOAH) in Lancaster, CA, "to create compositions that manipulate familiar iconography into mind-bending and inquisitive pieces." Walking a tightrope between fiction and nonfiction Super A's 'wonderland' creations marry figurative and modern surrealist compositions and provide playful puzzles to decipher. This intriguing example was painted in 2018 on Date Ave at Lancaster Blvd for Pow! Wow! Antelope Valley. @mr.super_a/ @moahlancaster/ @powwowav/

POW!WOW! ANTELOPE VALLEY
by Amir H. Fallah
"I’ve always been interested in real stories and people," Iran-born but Virginia-raised Amir Fallah told @VoyageLAMag. "When I first began making art all of my work revolved around my personal experiences." As Fallah began to expand to exploring other people's lives he started to ask questions like "how do you create a portrait that doesn't show someone's physical likeness?" Covering his subjects with textile designs and filling his work with the artifacts of their life histories and stories, he has found a way to look beyond superficial descriptions and tell a deeper story. For Pow!Wow! Antelope Valley in Lancaster, California, Fallah's 2018 mural on Date Ave provides us a glimpse at the rich layered design he commonly uses to both mask and reveal his subjects. @amirhfallah/ @moahlancaster/ @powwowav/

"JANUS SAPPHUS"
by Lauren YS
With a wide range of interests and experience, Asian American Angeleno Lauren YS has had her hand in academics, literature, teaching, illustration, and animation, leading, she says, to her ultimate arrival on the urban art stage. In addition to her heritage YS says her work "is influenced by dreams, mythology, death, comics, love, sex, psychedelia, and animation." In October, 2018, creating what she says was one her most fun, but technically challenging pieces, YS combined her breadth of experiences and influences with this nod to both the two-headed Roman god of beginnings and endings, Janus, and the ancient Greek poet Sappho. This wall on the side of the Lancaster Performing Arts Center faces Fern Ave and was painted for @MOAHLancaster and @PowWowAV. @squid.licker/

"PARADISE"
by Mike Kelly
Napa-based Mike Kelly says his eye-bending repetitious patterns of hand-drawn lines live at the intersection of the Op Artists and Minimalists. While a mathematical framework underlies each of Kelly's pieces, he says the painstaking, application of the human touch in creating one line at a time allows for "flaws that only enhance beauty when seen through the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—subtle “imperfections.” Painting behind Lancaster, California's Boulevard Flooring Emporium for Pow!Wow! Antelope Valley 2018, Kelly reveals the underlying design for this work was created "using an analog program that converted letters to numbers using a cipher," generating a visual translation of the word Paradise. @mikeykellystudio/ @powwowav/

SAGEBRUSH APARTMENTS
by Tran Nguyen
Born in Can Tho, Vietnam, Tran Nguyen studied illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design and settled in Georgia where she soon started receiving national awards for her work in advertising, publishing, product labels and more. Tran says she is "a lover of melancholic imagery, iridescent paint, and billowing fabric," and applying the same soft, delicate qualities of her smaller acrylic and colored pencil works she is also making a name for herself in mural painting. In 2018 when Pow!Wow! Antelope Valley returned to @TheBlvdLancaster CA the @ThinkSpace_art and @MOAHLancaster curated festival invited Tran to paint this work on Fig Ave at Milling St. @mynameistran/ @powwowav

"THE MOMENT OF REALIZATION"
by Ekundayo
Honolulu-born Ekundayo, aka Dayo, combines classical graffiti and fine art techniques, and his murals, and other work in a wide variety of media, somehow manage to pull off the appearance of aerosol graffiti effects without actually ever using a spray can. Reportedly the product of a tumultuous upbringing filled with personal hardships, Ekundayo has harnessed his past to create haunting emotional work that expresses the joys and pains of life. In October, 2018 Ekundayo joined the cast of artist participating in the biannual @PowWowAV festival, adding "The Moment of Realization" on Elm Ave near @MOAHLancaster which serves as host for the event co-sponsored by @ThinkSpace_Art. @sorrowbecomesjoy/

“WE’RE STILL HERE”
by David Flores
In 2016, in the shadow of growing Dakota Access Pipeline protests in support of the Standing Rock Sioux, the global Pow! Wow! street art movement—a name used to reflect the traditional Native American celebrations of culture, music, and art—came to Lancaster, California. Hosted by Lancaster’s Museum of Art and History, California artist David Flores was invited to paint this landmark work on the side of the museum at Elm Ave and Lancaster Blvd. Flores says the composition speaks volumes to him about the current state of one of America’s great nation treasures—its native people—commenting on the grinding poverty of so many: “the 2 million Natives in the U.S. have the highest rate of poverty of any racial group” contributing not only “to higher rates of crime but also to higher rates of suicide, alcoholism, and gang membership.” @davidfloresart @moahlancaster @powwowworldwide

KINETIC BREWING
by Meggs + Miya
Melbourne native now living in Los Angeles, David Hooke, aka Meggs, was a founding member of the Everfresh crew—a collective of some of the most respected street artists in Australia. Together with his partner, Miya Tsukazaki, the two have been traveling the world painting and in 2016 they were in Lancaster, California for Pow!Wow! Antelope Valley where they added this work to the back of Lancaster Blvd. craft beer maker and restaurant Kinetic Brewing. The festival was a break from the noteworthy Temple Child project the two started putting together several months earlier. Temple Child takes a holistic approach to fostering innovation, combining art and creativity with adventure and food sustainability practices, and in December, 2015 painted the first mual for its “Revitalize Hilo” project, in Miya’s hometown of Hilo, Hawai’i. @houseofmeggs @miyaeuca @templechildren @kineticbrewing @powwowworldwide

“STAY COOL”
by Bumblebeelovesyou
“Bumblebeelovesyou doesn’t make art to shock or horrify you” says Uproxx, “He wants to remind us all of the creativity and joy of youth.” Growing up too fast in a Southeast Los Angeles neighborhood Bumblebee found he no longer had time for art and began dabbling with ways to ways recapture his love of art—and to help others bring back happy memories. In a city with average August highs of 98˚, when the Museum of Art and History brought Pow!Wow! Antelope Valley to Lancaster, California in August, 2016, Bumblebee was there with this “cool” message on Beech Ave. to make neighbors and visitors smile. (As a nod to nearby Edwards Air Force Base and its test pilot school as well as NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, Bumblebee’s t-shirt design is also worth an extra smile.) @bumblebeelovesyou @moahlancaster @powwowworldwide
