The end of the long lunch!

For anyone that has worked in the digital media industry for any length of time, you’ll remember the ‘old’ way of buying display advertising. It usually consisted of many direct buys with publishers with deals more often than not discussed and agreed over a long lunch!
Of course traditional ad networks came along and made it easier and faster to ‘buy in bulk’ and execute display across multiple sites at any one time. Overlaying clever targeting techniques started to become the most efficient means of driving the old simple metrics of click through and conversion.
But time has moved on, technology has evolved, consumers have evolved. 
And the future is now ‘programmatic’…‘Programmatic Buying’…or Programmatic Advertising or Programmatic Marketing or Real Time Bidding….
Confused yet??!
In simple terms
Programmatic Marketing
Automating the delivery of targeted and relevant experiences to consumers in real time. This could be a touch point across a marketers website, an interaction with a Facebook post, an email open. It requires a complex delivery platform that can track all these touch points so that one informs the next.
Programmatic Buying/Advertising
The PAID part of Programmatic Marketing. Programmatic buying enables marketers to select inventory for all their digital campaigns one impression at a time via an automated platform. So essentially the advertiser is able to show a specific ad to one anonymous consumer, in one context, across one device in real time. The ad can be a standard display ad or an in-video ad and more and more commonly, a pre-roll placement. 
RTB (Real Time Bidding)
RTB is a style of Programmatic Buying, it is not to be confused with the latter. It is the auction based model that defines it – the trading of online media in an auction based environment (much like Search via Adwords).
So what is it really all about?
Despite the obvious benefits in speed and efficiency that automation offers, it really all comes back to personalisation.  It’s about reaching a consumer in real time, across any device, identifying in real time what they will respond to and delivering the most appropriate content.
And actually it doesn’t necessarily matter what the site or platform is (there are rumblings that ‘programmatic’ will apply to all media eventually). Where the consumer sees the message is somewhat irrelevant. It’s about identifying people’s behaviours, what’s making them tick right now? What content are they interested in right now? And will they engage?
What will be interesting to see is how a brand is able to deliver a story across multiple outlets and how this will be affected as more and more ‘offline’ platforms become ‘digitised’.
Programmatic currently is being seen as a place for DR (Direct Response) advertisers due to the efficiency of the buys but there is huge opportunity for brand engagement if advertisers can get it right.
