Tiny Worlds Story Brief
This is the basics of the story for my Tiny World.
It starts with a man alone in his home, looking out the window he see’s that it is actually a nice day and decides to leave his house. He walks through trees and tall grass to get to a small pond. But when he gets there he see’s three men sitting on the bench, keeping a distance from each other. There’s no room for him to sit by the pond so he starts walking back, but decides under a tree is a nice place to be.

WHY project brief
My original plan was to choose a question that interested me personally and to which I did not know the answer. But then I thought that if I focused on something too complicated, I might spend too much time trying to find and understand the answer itself.
I started by writing down all the random questions that crossed my mind. I wanted to go the funny route because I thought I had never explored humour in design and now was a good chance to do so, but at the same time I was afraid it would isolate me from other solutions.

Mind-maps and musicals This is my first blog post about my exciting new project based on the ocean. when creating new concepts I start putting my ideas onto a mind-map to allow ideas to flow and feel connected. to find deeper meaning in this concept I looked into one of my other passions, musicals. musicals commonly have a strong message behind them that usually is conveyed through motifs in the lyrics.
motifs: is a dominant or recurring idea through the use of... A word, or phase, or sound, or an image, or a colour, or an idea this can be seen through musicals like ‘Hamilton’ which talks about immigrants, revelation and the mixture of good and bad traits within all humans. this is implemented through the use of certain phrase appears several times in the musical allowing the audience to attach a certain emotion to that phase. overall this creates complicated visual storytelling. for my idea to be well thought out it needs to contain deep meanings conveyed through motifs to establish an emotional connection to the project. hence why I have chosen to focus on the damage humans are doing to the coral reefs. this can be visually shown by coral bleaching, plastic pollution, plastic eating coral, oil spills etc. below is my premise for the world I'm creating surrounded by these themes.
Premise: In the world I’m creating the “solution” to fixing a mass plastic pollution problem is by engineering coral to live in urban landscapes that will eat our plastic. But the problem isn’t going to be an easy fix, this doesn’t tackle the main issue.
The coral reef is dying from being fed plastic and the bio-matter the coral gives off is harmful to the environment. yet the coral wants to survive and will find places, objects or people to live upon...

Now it’s Easter and our collaboration project has come to a close, it’s finally time to blog about it. I thought it would be best to review our process of the project after we had finished it, mainly due to the fact that we only had four weeks to complete it and I knew that the more time I spent blogging, the less time I’d spend amongst my collaboration partners and drawing in my sketchbook. Also, I wanted to be able to sit down after it was over and reflect on the entire month from start to finish. I just felt as though this would be good for me and would perhaps benefit my learning more.
So, Patagonia, where do I begin?
On March 6th we were given the Patagonia project brief which was to create a new range for an outdoor living initiative for S/S 2017 for the existing Patagonia brand. We were challenged to create a collection of ten designs which would need to be on a range of durable fabrics and surfaces. We were a group of seven with a really exciting brief, and lots of ideas to work with so we had no doubts that we could find various new ways to approach this.
We began by doing our basic research. Patagonia are a well known brand who provide luxury, high-end products and clothing. Their company ethos is strong, well maintained, and prioritises the environment. They ensure that all products are produced under fair, legal, safe and humane working conditions. They make an enormous effort not to cause unnecessary harm when sourcing and considering the use of their materials and textile processes. All materials they use are 100% organic and re-usable or re-cyclable, and all consider the welfare of animals. This already gave us so much to work with when considering materials, and it gave us an ethos to work towards too. The Patagonia website was a really useful tool for research for us, due to the fact that their ethics and company morals are so strong and they waste no time in stating the details of them online. The Materials and Technology section on the website informs of every single material they use within their products, and how and where they source them from. So even though this was a brilliant source of material research for us and helped us out massively, it also put into perspective the material industry and the amount of waste that can occur when we’re not thinking about it as part of our practice- I thought this was a very interesting and important concept for up and coming designers like ourselves, and also really worth considering.

Canary Wharf
This project focuses on money, power and structure found in the architecture around Canary Wharf, as this is a very high profile area for business in London. Capturing buildings that stood alone or towered over other smaller, less powerful buildings. Making the connection of being ‘high up’ above the rest, which is how you would describe a powerful and rich businessman.

Using any three of the following techniques:
Infrared Photography Ultraviolet Light. High Speed Flash Photography Photomacrography, (greater than life size). Cross polarisation.
create a minimum of three ‘Unseen’ photographic images of phenomena not usually visible to the human eye.
Produce.
A single Illustrated document on both your research findings into ‘Unseen’ photographic applications and illustrate your own practical experimentations (what you did and how you did it). Include an evaluation of your final images and use of Unseen techniques.
Uploaded to My City as a pdf file. Three full res optimised 300ppi jpg files uploaded to My City.

Another World
The first brief given to me as an Illustration student was to create Another World. I particularly like this brief as it enables a variety of outcomes to be created, not only meaning I am free to create whatever I want to but also making this brief appropriate for practising becoming an illustrator as I can use films and books along with other artistic creations as inspiration, similar to how I may be requested by an author or musician to create artwork inspired by their work professionally. However, I also think thats its important to notice how the brief states we should make Another World, as even though it does say that we can use books as inspiration I feel that this brief will be more beneficial to me if I create the entire thing myself as this will help my original drawings. Ofcourse I will still start by looking for inspiration despite this though, which is where I want to start this Blog. Therefore the next posts on this blog will be investigating the worlds other people have created, which already exist and my own ideas following.

brief.project
I am currently debating the question of what I would like to do and build a career in; work which will shape my lifestyle and of course, provide me with a living. To address this question of a lifestyle I have modifying my day-to-day activity by implementing small steps into my routine, these steps include physical activity along with the cognitive. This personal experimentation and research has lead me to a conclusion that the mentioned two opposing forms of activity are actually complementary to one another. Each requires a balance of the other to be able to operate at it’s respective optimum capacity. The ultimate goal to be achieved by attaining the perfect harmony would be deemed 'a successful life’, which I would define in this case as a generally high level of satisfaction. Of course this involves various factors: health and fitness, financial stability, social interaction, education and knowledge, a sense of purpose. Due to the nature of life, these factors are all finely interdependent however I’d like to place importance on health and education. I feel that these are the fundamental basis of impact on one’s life as a whole. The current unified space we have to pass on information and educate is the schooling system. This established structure is a legal obligation - a fundamental human right. Primary and secondary education is compulsory in the UK and is therefore the perfect environment to assess and develop the balance between physicality and cognition. My initial research will involve observing how schools are currently guiding and educating children and young people. This will be followed by an analysis and exploration of my own activity and how I can implement the optimum balance to create a lifestyle that I can sustain and develop to attain satisfaction and contentment. The final stage of this process will be to draw out components of my own newly balanced practice and adapt a generic collection of activity which can be introduced to the schooling system.
