You know what I need more of, it's fics about how Dave Katz lives, and Klaus decides to stay in the 1960's+. Like I remember there were a couple, but I can no longer find them, and I loved them.

The idea that perhaps the remaining Hargreeves siblings stop the apocalypse and realize after a week or a month that they are down a sibling. They finally realize that he's not on a drug bend but is genuinely missing. The search begins, and their happy family that they have been trying to make is broken up again cause they forgot they had a brother out there who's vanished into thin air.

It takes a bit, and they finally find a lead to where he could be, and its literally from Hazel who come back from like his honeymoon with Agnes. It's like a peace offering to Five so the new couple can stay in this time without getting murdered by him. And he's all like 'hey don't know of you know this,but me and cha cha kidnapped your brother a while back, and Agnes keeps asking about him since he never comes by anymore. Did you guys find him after he took out briefcase?'

This leaves Five just furious, not at Hazel per se just at him and his whole dysfunctional family that can't keep track of any of their siblings. So a family meeting is called after finding out that their junkie brother has managed to drop himself into the fucking Vietnam War without anyone noticing. This obviously excludes poor Ben who's been STRESSED about what has happened to Klaus.

So they decide to obviously try to get Klaus back, but unfortunately they do not know exactly when he landed. The briefcases were not 100% accurate with when they dropped you, and Hazel cannot remember the exact date since him and cha cha traveled so much the dates start to run together. So they start scouring the internet for even a glimpse of their brother.

That's when they find the photo from the VFW photo on some wiki page. And they get a rough idea of when to jump to not so much where. That takes almost a month to calculate where Klaus ended up at Texas of all places. It takes another 2 weeks before Five is confident enough to jump with others and not strand them all over time. What he was not anticipating was that some of his siblings did not have the best grip on him when he jumped so all of those calculations went out the window when during the jump they all started falling one by one.

This results in them all landing at different times kinda like season 2, just a lot closer to Klaus' time in Vietnam.

Then the fic should change POV with Klaus now honorably discharged from the service with Dave. They made it to 1969 (😏) and with nowhere else to go, they go to Dave's hometown where, thankfully, Brian passed away while Dave was serving. So all that's left is Dave's mother and like 5 sisters. They are met with open arms and a lot of new niece's and nephew's to meet in person.

None of Dave's sisters care that Dave is gay just that he's happy. And while his mother is not ecstatic that Dave prefers the company of men, she at least loves Klaus. They get on like a house on fire somehow, much to the shock of all the Katz family. They end up moving to some old farmhouse left to the family generations ago that no one really wants since it's so far out of town and needed some real TLC. Klaus finds this perfect since there are way less ghosts on the property.

Together they fix it up and paint it a pale yellow with seafoam green trim on the doors and windows, they have a cow named Daisy, a couple goats that mow the lawn for them, and a herd of aforementioned niece's and nephew's that visit on the regular for free childcare. They visit Mama Katz every other Sunday for family dinners that nearly bring Klaus to tears at the start, witnessing a normal and loving family dynamic.

Klaus is relatively clean he still smokes cigarettes since they are legal and keep his hand ls busy. He knows he's immortal so he's not worried about the affects of smokers lung, but he does do it away and downwind from any and all family members so as to not give them second hand smoke. Since he's sober, he's able to see his fallen brothers from Vietnam and banish all of the crazed and blood thirsty ones to the great beyond.

They are living their best lives they had just painted their bathroom Miami pink with matching tiles and appliances to boot when out of nowhere about a year after discharge on a random Tuesday Ben appears in said bathroom. While Klaus is in the bath, radio blasting, and a glass of wine resting on the edge of the tub. Ben isn't noticed right away since Klaus has his eyes covered with cucumbers and face painted with some avocado mask, not a care in the world to any possible ghost that may catch him unaware. Ben stares for a good while taking in his brother who is a healthy weight and from what he can see has no under eye bags. Klaus is singing along with the radio when the door quietly opens, and this man sneaks in. Ben is worried history is about to repeat itself, and Klaus is about to get kidnapped again, so he just screamed for Klaus to get up. This of course, scares the shit out of Klaus who nearly brains himself trying to get up out of sheer instinct from years of being on the streets high out of his mind knowing that he can only trust his brother whenever he said to get out, to actually get out. Thankfully, after not actually braining himself Klaus is able to collect himself and finally come face to face with Ben, all while Dave is losing his mind over the move that Klaus just pulled. After a couple of minutes of staring, Klaus just makes Ben solid, so he could hug him, and so Dave has some idea about what was happening. Which was a relief cause Dave thought Klaus was having a flashback of some kind and was super worried it was his fault.

So after that touching but awkward hug, Klaus pulls himself together and cleans off and receives the ultimate yelling from Ben. And once he calmed down Klaus gives his side of what had happened, and how happy he is to see Ben after months of not hearing his brothers constant nagging. Ben then explains how he got there and that their oblivious siblings are here to rescue him. To which Klaus responds with that he's not going back but thank you for coming. This throws Ben off he had ran through so many outcomes, but this was not one he ever dreamed of happening, that Klaus would not want to go back with his family. And the more Ben looked around, the more he realized why Klaus wouldn't want to go back to a family who didn't even know he was missing.

For one there are way less ghosts whether that's Klaus' doing, the location, or just the time period he doesn't know but it's probably a big contender for the lack of enthusiasm about going back. Then there is the fact that the walls are covered in framed photos many of Klaus with Dave and the 173rd Airborne Brigade, some with Mama Katz, almost too many of Dave and Klaus, as well as several of the many animals and niece's and nephew's. Each photo depicts a reason to stay with a huge smile plastered on each person's face to really seal the deal. It breaks Ben's heart, but he gets it. Klaus found a place he belongs to, and that's the real kicker. Ben can understand and is starting to agree that maybe Klaus should stay cause the final nail in the Coffin is that Dave keeps looking at Klaus like he hung the stars and moon just for him. It's a look Ben has read about, but has never seen before, at least not on his siblings' faces. And here Klaus is not only on the receiving end of that look, but he too looks at Dave the same way. They match each other's freak it's weird to see, but Ben can't look away. He's honestly relieved that Klaus has found his other half, even if he had to time travel and fight in a war for it.

That was that Ben approved of Dave and agreed he would not try to force Klaus to go back. In fact, as each siblings landed in this timeline, Ben would report back to Klaus and played Lookout, so Klaus didn't have any unplanned run-ins with them. Ben would spend his days either following Klaus around as he tended to the house and farm or following Dave whenever he had to cover a shift at the family hardware store. He found the mundaness of it all quite relaxing, and as time passed, Ben was even introduced to the Katz family.

The years pass, and they settle into life of the early 70s, and then after 4 years of Klaus being in the past, Ben reports that Five has finally landed, the final Hargreeves sibling to arrive. Klaus prepares himself for the upcoming battle that is sure to arise. Cause despite the other's landing well before Five, they are no closer to finding their long-lost brother. It never occurred to them that Klaus may have changed his name. Now officially Klaus Katz he's basically invisible to his estranged family who are at their wits end trying to find the image of Klaus they are hanging on never even considering he'd ever change his ways. They look for him in opium dens and street corners at night, but never find him.

Five lands and is able to track his lost siblings pretty easily since they all have landed in the same alley. They didn't stray far in case another landed there. Now, with their all siblings reunited minus one, they can start searching in earnest. They can cover more ground and get word out that they are looking for their lost brother. It takes a week before Five comes to the conclusion that Klaus has most likely changed his name. For what reason they don't know yet but it makes sense as to why they couldn't find a Klaus Hargreeves, since according to Fives' calculations, Klaus is definitely in Texas so that narrows the search a great deal.

They manage to make flyers with the one photo they have of Klaus they printed from the internet that Five had possession of, and use the information they had to help find him.

This leads one of the younger nieces to see said flyer and to call the number provided, thinking she was helping her uncle find his family. At first, the siblings think the call was some kind of prank until they hear a familiar voice cut the young girl off and hang up the phone. They found Klaus. It was kinda anticlimactic in a way, no life or death fights or big bads finally sending their demands if they ever wish to see their brother alive again. Just a little girl who didn't know any better trying to help her uncle reunite with his family.

They show up to the farm on a Tuesday it's always a Tuesday for some reason. Klaus knows they are coming and has already had Dave drive the kids back, so they are not there to witness the inevitable fight that was to break out. He puts the kettle on in case they want tea if not, there was fresh lemonade in the fridge, and he waited with one of his favorite records on to help lighten the mood.

Klaus felt 10 years old waiting to get yelled at for his poor life decisions and how they affected his siblings again. But he was ready to finally stand his ground and stay where he was actually wanted. It's not long after the kettle whistles that both Klaus and Ben can hear an unfamiliar vehicle pull up to the farm. They both take calming breaths and go to open the door to reveal their siblings, Luther, with a raised fist ready to knock.

Klaus welcomes and ushers them into the house with little fanfare. He doesn't even acknowledge that Ben is visible, just lets the shock set in for his family as he offers refreshments and snacks. He doesn't even wait for replies before he's heading to the kitchen to just grab the pitcher of lemonade and glasses as well as the sliced loaves of banana bread he'd made that morning.

Klaus steadies his shaking hands and tries to reassure the lingering soldiers of the 173rd that he's ok and does not need backup, yet. He sends a small hail Mary for Dave to hurry back to the little girl on her bike and then heads back into the living room where Luther is crushing Dave's reading chair and the rest are on the couch with the most heinous print they found at a rummage sale. He sets the tray down and insists that they try both since the lemons are from his tree out back, and the banana bread was Mama Katz's recipe passed down from generation to generation.

All hell breaks lose as Klaus is the only one to fill a glass and to take a slice, each sibling trying to overpower the other as they loudly exclaim how Klaus missing has affected them. And how could he not try harder to get back to them. It goes on for quite some time so long that by the time they've lost steam, Dave had finally pulled back up into the driveway. And him entering his own house nearly sets off another apocalypse with how on edge Viktor was. But Klaus just shushes them and greets his husband, laws of the time be damned, and starts his introductions. Klaus just plows on not leaving room for his family to start up again he starts offering up options for dinner to a confused Dave and an amused Ben who plays along, offering his own ideas for dinner. Everyone follows Klaus into the kitchen as he starts pulling pots and pans from cupboards and meat and produce from the fridge and starts making a zuppa toscana soup. Dave and Ben fall into rhythm knowing what is needed of them. The siblings just sit at the kitchen table and watch as dinner unfolds before their eyes.

No one says a thing. Ben leaves to flip the record or to change it out, but other than that, no one moves, no one breaths as though a small inhale would break the spell. As though Klaus was still that fragile junkie, who cried if they were out of his favorite donut flavor or who always hid during missions cause they were too much for him to handle. But as they truly looked at the man before them that was not the Klaus they saw, no standing before them was a man who fought in a war and lived, who is with a man in 1970's Texas, a man who was sober and bright eyed laughing at their dead brothers antics while making soup.

Before them stood a man they were not confident they could convince to come back with them. And the more they looked around, the more they were certain they knew their brother was no longer theirs and hadn't been in quite some time.

But the hargreeves were nothing if not stubborn, so they would not lose their brother without a fight. So as dinner is served and they sit cramped at the kitchen table, thrifted from the salvation army, and Klaus would talk about mundane things like the weather or how the animals have been. A sibling would bring up some flaw Klaus had to Dave, like they somehow have been together for years now, and Dave hadn't noticed the drugs or the PTSD from his childhood. And Klaus wouldn't deny or change the subject, just confirmed that Dave knew that and moved onto recent movie releases or what they planned to plant this upcoming spring. This went on for about half an hour before both Dave and Ben finally broke and just demanded that the siblings leave. That if they are gonna talk to Klaus like that then they were not welcome in their home.

The stunned silence was thick they had forgotten that Ben was there. Their brother, who was the quietest, had found his voice after death and was finally able to be heard, so he went off on them. Listed their many faults and how many times they'd failed not just each other but Klaus specifically as children to present day when they didn't even notice he was missing.

Once he was finished, he was heaving despite not having to breathe as he now calmly tells them of the man Klaus has become now, of the family he now has. He explains that he is on Klaus' side to not go back because what is there for him back in 2019? That question seems to cath them off guard, so much so that they are easily led out of the house by the 173rd soldiers while Dave comforts Klaus. The hargreeves put up no fight and just walk out the door to the car. They sit in the drive for a while, thinking about what had just happened.

They accept defeat. Ben had let slip during his rant that Klaus still had the briefcase in working condition in their attic, covered in dust and unused. Had been since the moment Klaus landed here. He'd never once thought about going back he wasn't being rash or confrontational. No, he'd thought it through and decided that staying was what was best for him, and as much as they don't like it, they realized they will just have to live with the fact that their brother was not coming home with them.

They go back to their home base for the last time, all having the same idea of writing a letter addressed to their brother trying to apologize for their past actions and that they wish him well, that hopefully if he is still with them in 2019 he should visit or at least call. The letters are sealed and sent, and then they leave in a flash of blue, not knowing if Ben followed them like he had before, and they arrive in the middle of the hargreeves sitting room only minutes after they had left.

Grace walks in unfazed by the changes that have taken place from one moment to the next and asks if they'd like lasagna for dinner. No one says anything, and Grace decides to make the dish anyway and walks off as the siblings just sit in silence. They remain that way all through dinner. They seperatly go to their rooms afterwards. Having decided that in order to heal their trauma, living together would be beneficial, never even noticing that one room had remained unlived in.

That neglect changed they kept tabs on each other from then on out. They now knew everything about each other. Where and when they work, their hobbies, and dreams. They all eveb got to meet Claire once Allison had gotten the approval from her therapist and court.

No one dared look up if Klaus was still alive or not. None of them prepared for if he wasn't. In fact they continue to send letters to the farm address nothing serious just updates on their lives and photos of accomplishments each one secretly hoping they'd make it on the Katz's wall amongst the many family photos.

The letters always sent and are never returned to sender, so that bodes well with them. It's about a year to the day funnily enough on a Wednesday that during Claire's kindergarten graduation, a couple of old men not looking a day over 60 walk in and take a seat in the back. One dressed quite eccentrically in bright colors, head still full of curls, making the man next to him look quite plain in comparison. It's not till Claire walks the stage that the Hargreeves even notice they've snuck in as they whoop and hollar with the proud parents and uncles. Said family turns to see that now it's two old men and an underdressed teen, wolf whistling and signaling to them that they will talk after.

And talk they do. They end up reconnecting and become a truly odd family, but it works. Claire meets her final uncles and her copious cousins. They are shown that they did infact make the wall of photos along with their letters. Life goes on, and they miraculously live well into their 100's with both their families by their sides. Celebrating not just their lives but their lives together. Then, on a random Tuesday, within minutes of each other, Klaus and Dave Katz pass on peacefully. Following the youngest hargreeves sibling to the great beyond now that the little girl on a bike will begrudgingly let Klaus in. They have a funeral where no one was allowed to wear black unless it shimmered, and partied once again sharing stories and photos. then, at the end they lowered their caskets side by side and buried them, finally at peace.

oh sm definitely has influence by letting all the funeral wreaths stay there when he went out of the building, because they could definitely take it down (which they did, whether its a new one or not, we know they could and DID take them down) but they just for some reason did not take them all out

some said a police were protecting those wreaths but idk it just seems weird to me that sm let those 1000 wreaths on their property knowing very well that it is disruptive and hateful.

now, i dont wanna praise lee sooman but the old man literally laughed at "exo-ls" protesting against chen. center 5 definitely could just have ignored those fans yet they chose not to.

what's worse about this is they let seunghan see all of those funeral wreaths with his own eyes. if they couldn't put the wreaths down, maybe, idk maybe stop him from going to seoul forest or something.

and the members weren't even there when seunghan decided to leave, knowing very well they were fighting the management to keep him in the group,, seems calculative atp

Idk why Lake lost her hair. It wasn't explained. But you know what? She deserves stylish hairdos of whatever she wants.

You want to dye your hair blue and defect from your parents? Do it.

Lake is one of those characters that deserves the world, honestly.

I got nothing better to do, I'm honestly pretty tired. Tired of Yul.

But I'll power through because why not? We're already here and y'all enjoy my content.

So let's get into Episode 5.

Okay so this is cool. This wasn't here before.

Bear with me as I read this:

"Disventure Camp uses references from different reality TV shows in its format, parodying them in this animated series."

Total Drama also does this. But this is a valid way of wording it, because at the end of the day, 'Parody of Reality TV' is NOT a character or a property that Fresh TV owns. It is an IDEA. A story idea. A creative decision to have that idea be its format.

Legally, story ideas cannot be protected under copyright.

Characters can be. Story IPs can be. But not its ideas.

If ideas WERE protected under copyright, then stories would stop being made, because every story idea that comes to human mind that CAN be done, HAS been done.

The day ideas get copyrighted is the day I die.

"All the characters and stories shown in the series are the legal property of Odd Nation Cartoons and its collaborators, for which Odd Nation Cartoons has the right to profit from them and use them as it sees fit."

They are using completely original characters for their show, and their own completely unique setting.

I know the Beta originated as Total Drama Fanfiction, but that's also why they remade Season 1, so that this could be dropped in favor of it being their own show.

Fresh TV HATES Total Drama Fanfiction of any kind, especially if its animated. It's not like Fanganronpas, when it comes to those, Spike leaves creators alone despite them stealing Danganronpa's story premise and SOMETIMES characters. Unless I'm stupid and they DO do that. Bu Fresh? Yeah they're more ruthless. If you make something animated that contains Total Drama's premise or characters, IT WILL BE STRUCK WITH THE BAN HAMMER.

I'm not saying Fresh is wrong though. Just that they're ruthless about it. There are cases I've heard of where they were in the right to sue people for stealing content.

I used to watch Total Drama on a site that I won't name, and the site was taken down about two years ago because Fresh went after it for uploading their show.

GOOD FOR THEM.

GOOD FOR ODD NATIONS FOR STANDING UP FOR THEMSELVES AND COMING TO TERMS WITH A CONCLUSION WHERE EVERYBODY WINS.

Back then, a lot of indie companies like this were forced to take the Ls if they got sued for anything, because they didn't have the financial or influential ground to stand their ground. So the fact that these guys went out of their way to defend themselves when they got sued and came to an agreement and conclusion that allows them to save their project: PROPS.

I have to give credit where credit is due. Y'all are gems.

I may not like everything you do writing wise, but you standing your ground is worth my respect.

So yeah, that's the start of the episode. I just thought this was interesting.

Rosa really does seem to have a relationship complex the more I'm seeing it. She's always trying to be a people pleaser and take care of everyone, to the point where she's apparently done it with guys multiple times. She also had to grow up very fast to be a mother at such a young age.

So is this like "If I do something wrong or make a mistake that makes someone upset, I should be the one that takes the entire blame and I'm the screw up."

She is putting all of her own morals first over everything.

I love that out her, but it is an actual flaw if you're, you know, only judging yourself based on how other people see you.

I now own a DS demo version of Curious Village (EUR) :3333

Thats a super cool item to have in my PL collection! ( the cartridge also came with a tiny Layton strap either from the Pandora's box promo or the Curious Village one :33 )

The demo cartridge I own starts just the same as the original game, with sounds, animations, puzzles etc.. but stops you from playing when you find the answer to puzzle 6 when speaking to Marco to access the Manor. Based on reddit, the end of the demo versions might differ btw games ( UF as an example only has a trailer I believe)

The EUR demo cartridge is different from the US one, as the US ones only says NOT FOR RESALE on the front and doesnt mention "demo version", also comes with a sticker on the back saying 'property of nintendo do not resale' , when mine doesnt get a sticker.

I've managed to find some pictures from the US ones on Ebay and Reddit ( there's demo's version of CV, PB, UF and LS) both in EUR and US but I also found some in French :33 ( apparently there's actually demo versions of all the games even AL !)

Right around the time LS started airing season 4, there was a huge scandal in my country, in my local area, where it turned out the local firefighters were doing some sick and horrific things (I won't go into details because it's foul). I'd never really thought about how LS related to real life, but this hit me really hard and definitely made it hard to suspend my disbelief and enjoy a firefighter show and love characters who were firefighters. I managed, but it wasn't easy.

Firefighters generally don’t have the same kind of systemic foundation-level corruption and white supremacy as law enforcement agencies do because protecting property and capitalism isn’t their purpose. But I know from my brother who is one that, because they spend so much of their day dealing with disadvantaged people, it’s really easy for them to slip into a lot of racism. If there is a particular racial group that comprises a high percentage of the lower income or unhoused population of a city, you can bet a ton of firefighters have a lot of bigoted opinions about that group. bigotry informs how we treat people, and when you’re talking about providers of emergency aid and healthcare, that is a problem. LS doesn’t delve into that because it is a rosy view of all these good and kind and diverse people but that doesn’t mean it’s not an issue in the real world :/

Loyd's Hall of Haunts

William Loyd has been his own worst enemy since birth, which by how must be at least a couple of centuries ago. According to legend, as a young man in England he was considered such a scoundrel that his family disowned him. He was forced to drop one of the Ls in his last name to further disassociate him from the rest of the Lloyds and then was told to leave England entirely.

Being a rogue of low mortals and high aspirations, he naturally headed to Louisiana, where he bought a three-thousand-acre parcel of land on Bayou Boeuf near Cheneyville built a house there sometimes between 1816 and 1830, and then set himself up as a planter. The local Indian tribes apparently thought even less of him than his former relatives did, as a couple of flint arrowheads found embedded in the front door of his house seem to attest. As one of his neighbors quipped, "If you'd ordered a wagon train full of rascals but all you got was Bill Loyd, you'd still think you'd got your money's worth."

By 1864, when the Civil War had reached this part of Rapides Parish, wily "Grandpa Loyd" was considered (or else pretended to be) too old and too feeble to fight and chose to sit out the war at home. He invited Union troops to camp on his land and then wined and dined the officers. He may have hoped to curry a few more favors (or at least save his house from being burned down) by offering to tell them where the Rebel forces were hiding.

But if trying to stay on the winning side was his goal, this time it backfired. Following his directions, the Union soldiers walked straight into a Rebel ambush. Unfortunately for Loyd, enough of them managed to escape and straggle back to their campsite at his plantation to point an accusing finger in his direction. Justice was swift. Loyd was dragged out of his house, dipped in boiling tar, and then hanged from one of the oaks in his own front yard. That oak stood until 1957, when Hurricane Audrey finally uprooted it.

Plantation Phantoms

A poltergeist that has frequently plagued William Loyd's house and property ever since his has been attributed to the man's violent (and perhaps unjust?) death. Rearranging or hiding silverware, ringing doorbells, banging on walls and the piano, knocking pots off the stove, tipping over heavy furniture and slamming doors, the spirit seems forever bent on deviltry, much as Loyd himself had been during his lifetime.

Loyd is by no means the only one to have died on the property. According to family oral history, a few days following Loyd's summary execution a young Yankee soldier, in love with one of the young women in Loyd's household, deserted and stayed behind when his fellow troops pulled up their tent stakes to begin the Red River Campaign. He hid in a small storage closet under the roof off the east room on the third floor. When he finally emerged he accidentally surprised (or enraged) Loyd's widow, who stabbed or shot him and then left him to slowly bleed to death on the floor, where bloodstains marking the scene of the incident remain to this day. Unable to lug him downstairs by herself, Loyd's widow tipped his body out a third-floor window and then dragged his corpse into a shallow grave beneath the house.

Another bloodstain marks the spot where William Loyd's niece Inez, jilted at the altar on her wedding day, slashed her wrists and bled to death. Here again, however, the orally transmitted stories vary in the details, since some of the versions insist instead that she jumped to her death through that very third-floor window, only to be impaled on a bird shard of glass when she hit the ground below. Or could this have been the fate of Annie Loyd, yet another niece? Since all the records were destroyed during the Civil War, the various tales and legends about the house and its occupants have become entangled in the turbulent years that followed. Although they do all agree on one thing: Several restless spirits occupy the plantation.

Since the Civil War, more than a dozen families have attempted to live in the slowly crumbling house. But whether driven out by ghosts or daunted by both the ever-advancing decay of the structure and its remote location, none managed to stay for very long. Misfortunate and suffering seemed to grip anyone who tried to live there, but each new owner had to discover the curse for himself and then keep it a secret, lest he be unable to resell it to the next unsuspecting buyer.

Harmless Haunts

The old Loyd property changed hands again and again, shrinking from 3,000 to only 640 acres as the forlorn mansion gradually became so overgrown with vegetation that when Virginia Fitzerald and her husband bought the property in 1948, they had no idea it included the old house. Pulling down the vines that thickly shrouded it, the Fitzgeralds rediscovered the ten-room Georgian manor, cleaning out decades of debris to reveal its "floating" staircase of tiger maple and the beautifully intricate plasterwork of its sixteen-foot ceilings. Confident that they found a treasure, the Fitzgeralds and their young children moved in as soon as the rooms were cleared and the broken windowpanes replaced. They had not, however, counted on sharing the house with its long-term residents or heard about the ongoing curse, so when tragedy struck, they were unprepared. Within months of moving in, both Mr. Fitzgerald and his daughter were killed in a mysterious accident.

Undaunted by the supernatural, Virginia Fitzgerald chose to remain in the house. Determined to somehow carve out a place for the living among the spirits of the dead, she furnished the place with antiques-including a massive 1878 piano that belonged to William Jennings Bryan and that is still in the house today-and began delving into its past. Some things, like the bullets she found embedded in the stairs, never yielded an explanation, but in time she came to terms with the phantoms. Her surviving son raised a family there and eventually her grandchildren learned to play with one of the ghosts. "Harry Henry," as they called the lovelorn young soldier. Harry entertained them with violin music he played on the broad second-floor veranda and often wandered through the house in his old Union uniform. He and Inez, and another spirit the family called Sally (thought to be a former slave), all seemed to be harmless, even benevolent toward the Fitzgeralds, who had lived in the North before buying the property. But William Loyd apparently never forgave the Uion for the tarring and hanging and never ceased his troublemaking until the living Fitzgeralds finally moved out of the mansion into a cozier modern cottage they built nearby.

Loyd's Hall is now refitted for use as a guesthouse. If you choose to stay there, we recommend you keep quiet about where you're from-if you hail from the South, Harry might not like it, and if you're from up North, you might have William to deal with. So mum's the word either way.

Synopsis of Owners Meet at HICSA 2024

At the recently concluded HICSA 2024 in Bengaluru, the spotlight was on the owners. In an interactive session “Solving for Owner Challenges” a group of over 120 owners shared their insights on the present state of the hospitality industry in India and their desired areas of improvement.

Below are some of the key points overheard at the Owners Only Workshop and Hotelivate’s Take on each of the key points. The points below are random in order and should be read as such.

In an interactive session “Solving for Owner Challenges” a group of over 120 owners shared their insights on the present state of the hospitality industry in India and their desired areas of improvement including Brand Standards, F&B Profitability, Incentive Fees, Opacity in Operators’ Fees, Performance Tests, Brand Technical Services, Need for a Hotel Owners Association and the Talent Crunch.

Brand Standards

The Owners’ Opinion: Brand standards are a contentious issue between owners and operators, marked by a lack of flexibility. Owners find the rigidity troubling, considering the significant capital expenditure involved to meet the brand standards. Many international brand standards don’t align practically with the Indian market context, failing to reflect the local milieu. There’s a need for adaptability in brand standards to suit specific markets. On a contrasting note, despite this rigidity, brand standards are often conveniently bent or altered when it benefits the operator. This inconsistency highlights a misalignment of interests between the two parties. Practical discussions and greater adaptability in brand standards are necessary to resolve this issue.

Hotelivate’s Take:  Most brands do need to give this critical issue a serious thought. Either brand standards are sacrosanct, or they are adaptable and flexible. The brands cannot have the best of both worlds, as and when it suits their interests. The present environment does leave a bad taste in the mouths of owners when they witness this opportunistic attitude of many-a-brand. In our opinion, the so-called PIP is badly handled, and some level of practicality needs to be brought in.

Over the past few years and going forward, there will be a lot of conversion opportunities and if brands need to grow, they will need to show greater flexibility. To give credit, IHCL as an Indian brand and Radisson as an international brand have shown this flexibility by creating newer sub-brands and have adopted this approach successfully to be able to convert hotels fast and give that benefit to the owner.

F&B Profitability

The Owners’ Opinion: There’s a noticeable lack of focus on the profitability of F&B operations within hotels. If F&B outlets were viewed as standalone profit centres, with a portion of overhead costs allocated accordingly, many existing outlets would fail to demonstrate profits. Despite brands advocating for multiple outlets within properties, there is limited attention given to ensuring their profitability and crafting unique dining experiences. Instead, these outlets often function as cost centres, diminishing the overall profitability of hotels.

Several solutions are available for brands to address this issue including:

Implementing centralised kitchens or clustered operations for outlets within a property, or in some cases, outlets across properties in a region, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.

Outsourcing remains an attractive option for hotels, promoting both unique dining experiences and reducing cost.

Additionally, it is imperative for restaurant managers and general managers to treat outlets independent P&Ls from the hotel itself. These outlets should be branded and marketed distinctly, with their own identities in the market, to drive profitability.

Hotelivate’s Take: The suggestions being proposed are not untested, as several successful markets across the globe already adopt these strategies. It is about time all of these strategies were deployed by owners, with the help of their brand partners. In fact, to solve the long-term problem of F&B in hotels, it is recommended that right at the inception stage when hotels are being designed by the architect and the technical services team of hotels, there needs to be careful thought given to see if multiple restaurants are even required. Right now, the base fee and incentive fee are being paid on total revenue and GOP of a hotel, respectively. So basically, the rooms revenues are subsidising the operating losses of these units, as many hotels F&B outlets are failing to drive profitability in these restaurants, Maybe the food for thought here is that should it be separated?

Incentive Fees

The Owners’ Opinion: Incentive fees in India’s Hotel Management Agreements no longer align with their intended purpose. The fee structure’s low thresholds allow operators to earn fees even in cases of poor profitability. Consequently, in many instances, operator fees surpass the owner’s return, which is counterintuitive as the owner assumes most of the business risk and thus deserves a proportional return. To address this issue, a proposed solution involves calculating an acceptable minimum threshold as follows:

Owners’ IRR+ Cost of Debt = Minimum Threshold for Incentive Fee

Beyond this threshold, a cascading structure of incentive fees should be implemented, perhaps even allowing for large payouts in instances of high profitability. This ensures that owners receive a return sufficient to cover their needs and have a sufficient DSCR before operators receive any performance-based incentives, thereby also safeguarding owners’ interests.

Hotelivate’s Take: While the operators may argue that the owners’ costs below the GOP line are not their concern, it is important for them to realise that while they needn’t be accountable for such owner liabilities, however, they do need to pay heed to them. A win-win solution is a must for healthy owner-operator relationships. To that end, adopting the structure proposed above (or something similar) would be a prudent and progressive step forward. While this suggestion was brought forward by one of the participants in the audience, it did strongly resonate with the larger owner community.  In recent time, Hotelivate has come across a few brands willing to drop incentive fees to zero or very close to zero below a certain GOP margin.  So, in the above scenario if the potential IRR is 16% and the cost of debt is 10% — then the hotel owner should be looking at zero incentive fees being paid below 26% GOP.  To be fair to brands, this should come into effect post assumed stabilisation.

Opacity in Operators’ Fees

The Owners’ Opinion: Brand fees for services like systems, IT, and photography encounter challenges of opacity. Owners are mandated to use operators’ recommended vendors for these services, often at exorbitant prices. Owners advocate for capping these fees at certain levels to safeguard their interests. To combat these challenges, these fees should offer transparency, and rely on clear calculations.

Hotelivate’s Take: One of the most frequently heard concerns is indeed the opacity of ‘central services fees’, ‘bundled charges’, ‘hidden costs’, etc. Almost no operator in India offers full clarity and comfort in this regard. Operators would be well advised to give this portion of fees and costs a serious relook, and our suggestion is not as much about reducing these expenses, as it is for providing transparent and upfront clarity on them to the owners.

Performance Test

The Owners’ Opinion: Internationally, the performance test serves as a tool for owners to set stringent benchmarks for operators to meet. However, in South Asia, the Middle East and most of Southeast Asia, there is an evident power imbalance in favour of the operators leading to the performance test metrics to be more lenient and leaving the owner with minimal input. There is a pressing need for a stronger performance test clause in Hotel Management Agreements. Moreover, globally, advanced performance test metrics are either rare or entirely absent in HMAs in these markets. Thus, incorporating metrics like a Co-Variance test alongside the conventional GOPPAR and RevPAR tests is essential for a comprehensive evaluation of the operator’s performance.

Hotelivate’s Take: We have long argued that the performance-test lacks teeth in the context of hotel management contracts across brands in the region. A fair, robust, and truly utilisable test is warranted. Moreover, operators who are willing to not just offer a quality performance test, but also show openness to concepts such as ‘right of termination upon sale’ or ‘right of termination at cost, at will’ are likely to win more contracts in the years to come. Such concepts are common in the western world and should find their way into contracts in developing markets as well.

Brand Technical Services

The Owners’ Opinion: In theory, operators’ technical services are meant to assist owners in maintaining brand standards by providing expert supervision. However, in practice, these services are often limited to a cursory review during the construction and pre-opening phases. There’s a need to overhaul technical services to encourage greater collaboration between operators and owners. This would involve experts from the operator’s side working closely with the hotel owner’s team. Operators possess valuable knowledge and experience gained from working across various hotels, which is especially beneficial for first-time owners.

Hotelivate’s Take: Technical services are certainly in need of a relook. Their contribution to the owner’s construction process does remain rather limited, especially given the large amount of fees that the brands seek for this service.  There exists a view that the technical services fees are being used to pay the cost of the development teams as opposed to necessarily provide the right guidance. Perhaps the need of the hour is to give the tech services offering a detailed overhaul. Proving guidance to the architect, interior design consultant, all the other technical consultants, etc. should be an active part of deliverables. Moreover, the tech services team should be helping the hotel developer with a granular assessment of project cost rather than having them rely on their PMC or Architect. A proactive, more involved and hands-on approach is needed.

Hotel Owners Association

The Owners’ Opinion:  The consistency in clauses across operator contracts is striking, with various operators making unreasonable demands of owners. This leaves owners with little choice but to accept these terms, as alternatives are scarce. It highlights the necessity for greater collaboration among owners to align their interests and demands when dealing with operators.

Establishing a hotel owners association would enable owners to present a unified front against unreasonable demands from operators. Moreover, it would foster innovation and provide solutions to common challenges faced by owners. Such collaboration would empower first-time and non-institutional owners, enhancing their leverage in negotiations with operators and promoting a more equal balance of power.

Hotelivate’s Take: While the idea of creating an owner’s association is interesting and the thought behind it is fair, Hotelivate believes that creating such a body may not be entirely practical. For instance, how do organisations such as IHCL, EIH, Leela Hotels (owned by Brookfield), etc get addressed? They are both, owners and operators of brands. Excluding them from this association may not be fair and including them in it may dilute some of the intended purposes of the body. Overall, while there is merit to creating a body that voices the opinion of hotel owners, a formal association that exerts influence may be a far reach.

Globally this situation is not a big issue as hotel brands typically do not own hotel assets. Back in the day, Marriott and Marriott Host split up. While it was not because of similar issues, it did provide for two separate companies looking after their own interests. In Hotelivate’s opinion, in the long run there will be conflicts between owned assets by brands and the hotels they manage. There will need to be greater transparency on how issues are handled. Perhaps a system of strong independent asset managers who do not report to COOs as that itself is a conflict.  We, however, do not agree necessarily that a formal owners association needs to be formed or if it would resolve anything.

The Talent Crunch

The Owners’ Opinion: The hospitality industry grapples with a well-known talent shortage, with hiring and retention posing significant hurdles. Despite this, a substantial portion of expenditure continues to be allocated to operator fees across different areas. Owners believe that addressing this talent crunch and positioning themselves for growth requires a strategic shift. They propose reallocating investments from operator fees towards efforts aimed at finding and retaining the right talent, thus effectively solving this challenge.

Hotelivate’s Take: While the owners have posed an interesting suggestion, we are of the view that ‘borrowing from Peter to pay Paul’ may not be the path forward. A concerted and serious effort needs to be made to enable fair and equitable compensation for the employees of our industry. However, we do not feel that asking the operators to take lower fees and transposing those savings to employee salaries may be the solution for this. The fact is that we are simply not paying enough at starting salary levels and treat youngsters coming out hotel schools as cheap labour as opposed to opportunities to train them. We particularly feel that international brands are more at fault in this area.  For them, training is often happening through videos and other tech devices whereby we live in a service world that requires a lot more in-person training.

Concerning Elanor's antics in Skyrim

Hopefully a little post for me to finally write down some notable events in Elanor's unending struggle in making life in Skyrim somehow worse.

The year is 4E 201. The cart is rolling towards Helgen. Ralof, Lokir an Ulfric have to deal with snoring and absolutely shitfaced Thalmor Justiciar sleeping in the same cart. Say hi to Elanor, age ~110 and her questionable life choices.

- And... who are you? - Oh, I am here for the execution. To watch it, I mean. Although with a headache like this, maybe it would be easier to just chop the whole thing off, you know?

Let it be known, that Elanor should be held responsible for at least half of property damage and casualties in Helgen, because half-drunk is not the proper state to sling around destro spells.

She initially goes to Whiterun just to hitch a ride to Solitude, taking a few detours on the way, naturally, while Delphine runs her own investigation into dragon issues, frustrated that someone has already raided Bleak Falls Barrow. And someone with a frustratingly familiar "woe, ton of atronachs and a chain lightning be upon ye" approach to problems.

Mostly sober now and hungry for a rematch Elanor jumps on a chance to join Irileth's dragon hunt, subsequently devouring her first dragon soul.

A rare moral W for Elanor is stopping vandalizing Talos' statue to give a few coins to Lucia and hear her story. Naturally proceeds to casually offer to go stab her aunt and uncle so the kid can have her farm back, taking a moral L for further traumatizing the child. Evens out by borderline bullying Balgruuf into giving her Breezehome so Lucia and Brenuin can move in there. Leaves Whiterun without elaborating.

Figures it won't take too long to check this out and ventures to High Hrothgar, naturally summoning a dremora lord to princess carry her up the mountain.

Actually has a lot of fun learning funny shouty language and being obnoxious yellow gremlin. Greybeards and their young acolytes less so, but they manage. She particularly aggravates one of their most promising pupils, Eivor.

This leads to him attempting to get the Horn in the Ustengrav before Elanor can get there and coincidentially running into Delphine there and them teaming up for the time being. Elanor meanwhile doing a very important sidequesting and terrorizing local populace.

Subsequently, Elanor also forgets about the whole Horn thing after getting yelled at by Elenwen (via letter) and summoned back to the Embassy to talk about the whole dragon problem. Finds her in the middle of some daedric quest aka "Oh, you are Sheo's kid, right? Can you help me a bit out there?"

Upon making it to the Embassy shows up exactly in time for another one of Elenwen's parties. While partying takes another rare moral W by disposing of Erikur. Immediatelly proceeds to take a ton of faction-typical moral Ls for what she does to get information on Esbern out of Etienne. Also gets roped into figuring out the whole Potema thing.

After gifting Potema (bound to the skull) to Elisif, Elanor proceeds to head for the Riften where the hunt for the Blades starts. Very fun and enriching! She hasn't felt that alive since the Great War! Certainly being very normal! Surely not terrorizing and driving her quarry borderline mad with the lack of sleep and constant attacks.

Eventually makes it to the Sky Haven Temple, gets run through by Delphine's katanas, excitedly asks if dear worstie would want those back or if she can keep them for the collection. Yes, she has a collection.

Gets the Horn from Eivor, finally remembers that she is supposed to bring it back to yelling grandpas. Takes a metaphorical selfie in front of Alduin's Wall and leaves to do just that. As a result gets yet again insulted by people giving her the same title as tiber fucking septim, but on the bright side of things - she gets to meet Paarthurnax. Imprints on him like a sad lost duckling.

Dragon problems continue to escalate while Elanor is trying to dig up an Elder Scroll somewhere. Along the way takes part in the College questline, annoys Psijics and takes another rare moral W by being actually decent to college kids. Dangerously unhinged, but decent.

"Hey, kid, do you know how to summon atronachs that explode? No? Do you want to?"

After acquiring the Scroll Elanor actually remembers to go to Paarthurnax with it and finds out she can't actually perform Dragonrend as the concept of mortality is, funnily enough, alien to a functionally immortal being. Still proceeds to beat Alduin to a stalemate using her cool new shouts and good old reliable "enough magic firepower to level a city" approach.

Peace talks? Gloriously failed.

Joins the Civil War on the side of the Legion, but causes so much problems Ulfric should have probably taken her on the payroll. In any case, eventually Whiterun's position is secure enough so Balgruuf agrees to the whole "capture the dragon" plan.

Final showdown with Alduin happens, the crisis averted, the dragons chill down a bit, Elanor goes back to being a menace, gets drunk with Sanguine to celebrate, ends up in Cindhna Mine as a result, you know, the typical stuff. Civil War rages on...

Dawnguard: Elanor joins the side of Dawnguard, offers Serana to beat up both Harkon and Molag Bal if it would cheer her up, casually drops the fact of being an artificially created "godling" in the conversation, adores her new cool bow. Promises to figure out some loophole to get Durnie out of Soul Cairn permanently.

Actually gets her "parents" to join her and in fact beat Molag Bal up. Cathartic experience.

Dragonborn: oh no, worsties are fighting. Elanor is absolutely head over heel about the prospect of finally fighting someone strong again, and ends up draggin Miraak back to the Nirn after Mora tries to pull a sneaky.

"Hey, maybe I should start a cult too, you know? I am cool and basically a goddess in the flesh, I deserve one"

The Dragon Cult 2: Electric Boogaloo. Now comes in girlboss.

A few years later Elanor is mostly known as Thurrahdaal, the Winged Majesty, and Paarthurnax is doing his damned best to keep her at least somewhat sensible. Somewhat succeeds. Sometimes it requires whacking her on the head with a wing or a tail, while in private.

Eventually, a century or so later, our horrible meow meow embraces the whole Alduin thing and devours this particular timeline, abusing her privileges to keep her horrible bf (Ancano, also the head priest of her fun little cult) around.

Following this "lives" at Akatosh and Co place and scheming something very dastardly to do to one divinely neighbour.

The National Park Service employs approximately 150 year-round employees and an additional 150 seasonal employees in the summer here at Mount Rainier. Hey! 

Ha yeah I have been on a JOURNEY 

A LONG JOURNEY so it is under a cut (at least I think it is? Sorry if it’s not. Xkit is messing with me here).

I’ve told this story in bits and pieces before because I think I was actively figuring it out for myself at the time, but I think - I hope?? - I finally know what I’m doing, so this is a far fuller picture of my thoughts and experiences from the last few years 

I actually came to law school because I was interested in politics and had some vague thought that people in politics had law degrees, so I could make this work for myself. Before I started law school, our school mailed us a copy of Just Mercy and during my 1L year I worked with the Innocence Project on a case, and then events in my personal life led to the arrest and incarceration of two separate people close to me for offenses that I personally believe should be decriminalized, so I felt passionate about criminal justice and took an internship with a public defenders office. 

The experience wasn’t quite what I thought it would be - my two largest projects were particularly gruesome child pornography defense cases, which was not the work I was interested in doing (and, in retrospect, was a pretty brutal way to introduce a fresh-faced student to public defense work!) - so afterward I cast around aimlessly for a bit. I soon thereafter made law review, and then got an internship with a Federal judge I admired, so I started running in a particular law school circle (law students know the type) and began thinking well, I’m not sure what I want to do, but I now have a very classic big law background, I’ve missed OCI (the on-campus interviewing that happens in the summer after 1L that leads to post-grad jobs in Big Law), but I can start networking and find something that’ll lead me somewhere. 

I grew up poor and can’t lie, I was attracted to the idea of big law money! I figured I’d do it for a few years and if I hated it, soft-exit through a clerkship to something more public interest. But in the meantime, hey it’s good experience and I can pay down my student loans. So I took my third internship in a corporate litigation firm. And again, it just was not for me. The environment of the particular office was very isolating, the work was depressing (foreclosing on people’s homes on behalf of banks! asbestos defense! defending employers in discrimination suits!).

So, I kind of scrapped that second, new plan. It’s hard to say I’d turn down one of those jobs if I managed to land one (we are in a pandemic and oh my god they do pay SO MUCH MONEY and I have SO MUCH DEBT), but it’s not where my values are, not something I could stomach long-term, and it’s not work I’m actively out seeking. I finished my law school internships working for a municipal law firm, thinking that would be a good way to marry my interest in politics with my interest in litigation, but it felt a lot like just working at a private DAs office, which I didn’t realize when I started (somehow!) and didn’t particularly enjoy. Just felt like the majority of the work I was doing was litigating punitive laws against the citizenry that I didn’t particularly care for. 

Which brings me to now. Three-week post-grad Kit. Hello! Sounds like I’ve still got no fucking clue what I’m doing, but I promise you I have sorted it out now. None of those roles was the exact position I was looking for (well, the judge’s chambers were pretty great) but each taught me enough about what I am looking for that I’m feeling comfortable about my next steps. Notably, I learned that I enjoy litigation a LOT (I did a transactional drafting clinic at school just to dip my toes into those waters to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything and oh boy, I was not) and I learned from topics that I did not enjoy litigating what I might actually enjoy litigating. In particular, there were several times when I found the law I was working with particularly invigorating but wished that I was doing the plaintiff’s side work on those topics. These areas include torts and employment law cases, but I have also had some exposure to zoning and affordable housing work that I really enjoyed. I also worked as a Tort Law TA for two years, so I think just really freaking enjoy torts. I have also had more exposure to criminal justice work and recently have been rejecting that I didn’t apply to the public defender's office in my region during their last round of hiring. 

I am not currently looking for a job (seems like a waste to pour so much into it when clearly nobody is hiring right now) other than glancing vaguely to make sure I’m not missing anything huge, but once I’ve taken the bar exam I’m going to start earnestly seeking plaintiff’s side litigation positions or if I can get it, misdemeanor criminal defense (again, would love to be a public defender, but I have slightly missed the boat there for now). My downstairs neighbor is an attorney at a small firm that does plaintiff's side civil litigation and defendant’s side criminal defense and I would be thrilled if I could land something similar. I just...want to work with people and not corporations and help those people through some of their worst days, if I can. Personal Injury attorneys get a bad rap, but I’m telling you, I fucking love Torts and I genuinely believe there is a public good in helping harmed parties recover expenses from their injuries from wrongdoers.

I think when people hear “public interest” their first thought is non-profit or governmental work, but it’s broader than that. The clinics at my school are all considered “public interest” and some were in areas of law like intellectual property. It’s not about where you work, but the clients you serve. I think I would prefer the kind of firm work I have outlined above to any kind of non-profit because non-profits have more narrow missions and usually work in a more narrow legal capacity (i.e. the ACLU does entirely civil rights law, meanwhile the small firm my neighbor works at that I’ve already used as a point of reference does civil rights cases in addition to family law, securities regulation for some reason, personal injury, etc), but honestly, it would be a privilege to work for a principled non-profit, so I wouldn’t say no to that either. 

So that’s where I’m at. It’s been a ride. I’m tired? Is that from the personal journey or is that from typing out six paragraphs about the personal journey? I came to law school because I felt strongly about my own personal values and thought I would like to translate those values into policy. I learned while at law school that litigation is as important an agent for change and protection of the oppressed as legislation and also learned that honestly guys, I am really freaking good at oral arguments and litigation briefs, so I’ve pivoted to this lane. Went on a long journey and it basically took me back to where I started. It’s almost annoying I was so derailed because I could have gotten some great Plaintiff’s side experience while in school, but I didn’t know what I was doing and was flailing openly, casting around. I’m just happy I figured it out now.
