we were talking abt "cringe culture" at work (I work in a v white collar office job) and the folks I work with aren't particularly creative personalities, but understand the broad strokes of OCs, fanfic and fanart, if nothing else in a joking sense

it was in this moment of "I could never" that our intern was having - insisting on keeping her nerd interests off the clock - that I recalled a situation where our manager came to us with such excitement to tell us he found a new book recommendation

mind you, he is a 30-something white cis man with a kid and townhouse and we're in Indiana, USA, not exactly the paragon of progressive people

and he no hesitation states he found a Harry Potter fanfic AU and starts describing it in such detail and fervor "I couldn't put it down! I can't wait for them to update it!"

say what you will about the content of his reading choice and the judgment of his character... that's not exactly my focus here

the heart of the post is: if a White Cis Man, who likes golf and daytime TV, who works at a Office Job with Reports and Faxes, who is so far detached from anything creative can gush about his newly discovered AU FANFIC on AO3 NO LESS

then cringe is truly dead. we are free to enjoy anything we want forever and get excited about our interests

Just marking a moment for me today, my friends.

Today, I have reached 4 years of sobriety. So in a way, I am 4 years old today.

I refuse to apologize for talking so much about my hyperfixations. I refuse to apologize for being passionate about the series I love. The stories, the characters, the relationships. I don’t demonize someone for enjoying what they love and creating content that creates that love. And you shouldn’t be ashamed of it either. Love what you love and don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.
