QD-OLED: la nueva tecnología de Samsung que mejorará a las QLED
Tal y como se desveló este fin de semana, Samsung Display, una rama de Samsung Electronics, ha empezado a sujetar la producción de paneles LCD para aumentar la producción de panales Quantum Dot OLED. Ahora, ha sido el propio CEO de Samsung Display, Lee Dong-hoon, el que ha confirmado que están haciendo “grandes esfuerzos” para propalar paneles QD-OLED en un futuro cercano, aunque no se han confirmado inversiones a nivel de producción.
La reducción de la capacidad productiva ha tenido como consecuencia el clausura de una de las fábricas encargadas de crear los paneles LCD Gen.8.5, con una capacidad mensual de 90.000 unidades. Adicionalmente, reducirá la capacidad de otra planta en 30.000 unidades a partir del mes que viene. Hasta el clausura de esta industria, Samsung producía 250.000 paneles LCD en Corea del Sur cada mes.
Estas fábricas no se cerrarán, sino que sufrirán un proceso de reconversión en torno a plantas de paneles QD-OLED, donde su producción se retraso que eclosión para el año 2021. El motivo por el que Samsung habría migrado a este nuevo sistema es que los paneles LCD han caído en rentabilidad conveniente a que hay un exceso de ofrecimiento porque cada vez hay más empresas chinas que se dedican a la fabricación de estos paneles.
El funcionamiento de estos paneles es mediante un sistema híbrido, donde en la parte trasera tenemos un panel OLED que emite luz azur, y luego una serie de quantum dots que dividen la luz en roja y verde, mientras que la azur simplemente la “dejan sobrevenir”. Los quantum dots son unos cristales nanométricos (de unos 10 nm de diámetro o menos) hechos de un material semiconductor, de tal modo que pueden configurarse para emitir energía en longitudes de onda concretas, pudiendo ajustarse con una precisión casi total.
Esto es mucho más capaz que los paneles LCD actuales, donde hay una retroiluminación a través del panel LED que muestra una luz blanca, y luego unos pequeños cristales líquidos controlan la cantidad de luz que pasa pegado a unos filtros. El problema es que este sistema es harto ineficiente a nivel energético, adicionalmente de que el contraste se ve puritano.
Por ello, el OLED está ganando actualmente grandes cuotas de mercado gracias a que los paneles son más finos, más eficientes energéticamente, y tienen unos colores más saturados, ya que son los propios píxeles (o más perfectamente subpíxeles) los que se iluminan en rojo, verde y azur y sus combinaciones. Sin requisa, el OLED se desgasta, y ese es el motivo por el que se est�� investigando tan intensamente en alternativas a estos paneles.
Con un panel con Quantum Dots, la retroiluminación se hace con un panel LED de luz azur en extensión de blanco, ya que son más baratos. A partir de ahí, son los quantum dots rojos y verdes los que convierten la luz a esos colores primarios, mejorando los ángulos de visión, el contraste y la precisión del color.
Los QLED siguen teniendo un único panel
Sin requisa, estos paneles siguen teniendo un único panel trasero en extensión de poder controlar la claridad de cada pixel de modo individual. Aquí es donde se estaba trabajando en tecnologías como el MicroLED, donde se ha descubierto que los quantum dots, adicionalmente de tener propiedades fotoemisoras al ser excitados por otra luz, incluso tienen propiedades electroemisoras, donde pueden emitir ellos mismos la luz.
Esta misma propiedad es la que Samsung quiere beneficiarse para estos QD-OLED, que son primos hermanos de los MicroLED que utilizó en aquel gran televisor que bautizó como The Wall, aunque con algunas diferencias. En el caso de los microLED encontrábamos LEDs minúsculos de color blanco que eran los que se encargaban de la retroiluminación. Con el QD-OLED no se necesita la retroiluminación trasera al ser el propio punto cuántico el que se ilumina, por lo que se puede tener un contraste infinito como en las OLED con unos negros puros al apagarse la iluminación de cada píxel. Sin requisa, hay una preeminencia que seguirán teniendo los OLED: seguirán siendo los más finos, aunque los QD-OLED serán más finos que los QLED y otros LCD actuales.
Donde incluso ganará el QD-OLED es en el desgaste de los píxeles, ya que la degradación del panel es uniforme y no se produce a nivel individual de cada píxel, lo que genera el odiado screen burn-in que deja marcados logos o nociones en la pantalla si se muestran de modo continuada durante el tiempo, como el logo de una dependencia de televisión que veamos con mucha frecuencia.
De momento, en los planes más a corto plazo de Samsung podría estar el propalar paneles 8K QLED de clímax media a precios más asequibles con el fin de aumentar su liderazgo en este segmento. Al estar Samsung migrando ya la producción en algunas fábricas, es posible que veamos estos paneles en alguna feria, como la IFA del mes que viene o en el CES de 2020. Su éxito podría enorme si consiguen ser más baratos que los OLED y ofrecer una calidad de imagen similar.
