A comment about the " clean, moisturize, sunscreen " debacle:
"you're weirdly strongly antagonistic about this considering plenty of people are just too disabled to have a three product care routine or don't require one because they can't leave their house or, and this is the most important one, just plain don't care if their skin shows age because we should destigmatize aging and getting old is a privilege?"
Yes, I'm strongly antagonistic to not having a skincare routine AT ALL because it's a BASIC self-care, just like brushing your teeth, washing your hair, and applying deodorant. Secondly, I don't know if the author of the comment actually knows any disabled people. I do, and, oh surprise, even the homebound ones get haircuts, manicures, use skincare products and, the horror, even makeup. Why? Because, according to one of them, it makes them feel better. Self-care is for ONESELF, not for " leaving the house"...
About "plain don't care if their skin shows age"... that's very stoical, but I did not yet meet a person who actually really doesn't care. Some accept it easier than others; nobody says " Oh, first wrinkles and age spots, finally, couldn't wait". Maybe we should talk about it, via Quija board, when you'll be 55.
Unpleasant truth: almost every physical neglect of your body when you're young comes back and bites you in the ass when you're old; speaking from experience. Some prevention and maintenance pays off. I understand it seems superfluous when you're at the sge when you can't envision yourself living past the ancient age of 50...
I'm all for destigmatizing aging. Let's not do it by self- neglect. Maybe stopping harrasment of people over 15 on this platform would be a good start.

Ghost Hunters
Broadcast between 1996 and 1997 on the Discovery Channel in the UK, ‘Ghost Hunters’ is probably the most thought provoking paranormal series ever made for television. This was a scientific documentary series and not reality television, which focused on the experiences of ordinary people living in 1990s Britain who had experiences they couldn’t rationally explain. The four series attempted to explain these experiences by seriously considering the simple question if paranormal phenomena is real, what does it mean for the scientific understanding of reality? Is a new “science of the mind” required so that science can explain what is happening and offer a complete world view without paranormal gaps of understanding?
For many years this gem of a series was part of my daily routine. Two episodes would be broadcast on the Discovery Science channel every evening, followed by a UFO focused series. I had always been interested in anything odd or unexplained but it was Ghost Hunters that persuaded me that the mind could possibly survive bodily death, and that this doesn’t need to be a religious belief. It is simply part of the processes of the wider physical universe which we don’t have an explanation for…yet.
I have managed to obtain two DVD boxsets that include the entire series between them. I plan to make this series part of my daily routine once more. Every day I’ll watch one episode and share my immediate thoughts on it.
Some of the theories and phenomena I will be writing about include the Stone Tape Theory, Demonic Possession, Black Magick, Time Slips, Crisis Ghosts, Poltergeists, and Quija Boards.
Anyone who wants to watch along can find the entire series in one omnibus video uploaded on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/aTs3NU8FTIQ?feature=shared

Couple years ago, I started looking at old British roadsters. Now, while they still existed, the British were good at a lot of things. Cars were not one of them, with the possible exception of the convertible roadster. These cars were also largely not actually good, but their inherent potential elevated them. How could you be mad at a car that didn’t start sometimes, or caught fire if you put the left turn signal on for too long, as long as you had that one perfect summer afternoon ripping through a twisty road with the wind in your hair?
Of course, Mama Statistics dictates that if a given model of car breaks down once per year, and it’s been (checks watch) forty years since that car was introduced, pretty much all of them are going to be broken down by now. Even the most diligent owners who keep up on top of costly repairs can only own so many cars at once, and everyone else just throws a sheet over the corpse of the car and starts to use it as a garage shelf. “I’ll get around to it one day,” the humans who own the car say, until they can’t anymore. Because they are dead.
At first, it may seem ghoulish to be cruising the local estate sales for a non-working MG or Triumph. In my defence, there are at least two positive ways you could look at it. I’m either giving the family closure and a little spending money, or working hard to bring the car back to life, the way the original owner would have wanted. Of course, without a Quija board, it’s a little hard to figure out if the original owner really would have wanted me to fully rewire the car and install a methanol-burning, twin-turbocharged, triple-rotor 20B rotary engine. Let’s assume for the sake of our thought experiment that they would think it is extremely rad indeed.
Unfortunately for my dreams, it turns out that non-working British cars sold by grieving widows cost about the same amount of money as non-working British cars sold by the original owners. Working British cars, you ask? I’m sorry, but even my dreams work in the realm of the possible.

Phoenix Magick Part 3 - Incorporating the Phoenix into your Craft
┏━━━✦・⁙・༻˃̶☽☼☾˂̶༺・⁙・✦━━━┓
The Phoenix and Your Craft
┗━━━✦・⁙・༻˃̶☽☼☾˂̶༺・⁙・✦━━━┛
So we’ve begun with teaching you the history of the Phoenix and it’s origins. Then I gave you a glimpse to a practice in which it was used. But now let’s get into how you can incorporate the Phoenix into not only your craft but your life.
First let’s start with what type of Phoenix you’ve found yourself with. That’s the most important to your start. For it will help you decide how best to treat it and work with it.
Then we have to look at why this particular Phoenix has agreed to come work with you. Perhaps it’s your spirit guide or guardian. Maybe it came to be your familiar. Or maybe there’s something specific it had in mind or you.
After looking at the background of said Phoenix and the reasoning behind it’s being there we have to start looking at our own crafts and practices. Where does it fit? Perhaps your a fire witch so have a statue or candle dedicated to it on your fire altar will be perfect. Or maybe the same could be said if you work with the sun. If you work with a fire, sun, or death deity that may be associated with rebirth and transformation maybe there can be a way for them to work together with you.
But what if you’re none of those things. Perhaps your path is unknown to you. Or maybe you work with no deity or element of fire. Take a look at what you are interested in. What is it in your craft that led you to want to work with a spirit of this magnitude? Perhaps your craft is all about transformation and growth. Or perhaps it was the motion of which the world works. Constantly going through cycles. Working with such a power has led you to believe the Phoenix was the right choice for you to work with.
PLEASE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO WORK WITH THIS SPIRIT WITHOUT ANY RESEARCH OR TRAINING IN WORKING WITH SPIRITS. PLAYING WITH YOUR OLDER SIBLINGS QUIJA BOARD IN YOUR MOMS BASEMENT DOES NOT COUNT AS EXPERIENCE. THESE CREATURES DEMAND RESPECT AND THE ABILITY TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON PROMISES.
Now let’s get down to what you may experience while working with the Phoenix. Many have said that being in the presence of this spirit has brought a calming energy to their surroundings. These are lovely creatures who experience the joys of life. By working with the symbolism of their deaths and rebirths you’ll find that you can move past many things trying to hold you back. BUT BE CAREFUL. Just because it offers you the chance to burn the past and come forward from the ashes it does not mean the problems are solved. The past dies hard. It’s better to work through it by facing it head on. Of course for some it may not be that easy. So find comfort in what you can. Magick can’t solve all life’s problems like it does in the movies. These spirits offer counsel and can offer the tools to help you move on. But don’t expect a quick fix or for them to do everything. You put that energy forward and you will persevere. Burn through all life’s obstacles and heartaches and rise from the ashes in your wake. Continue to deal with things head on by talking it through with someone you have issues with. Or choose to forgive yourself for something you couldn’t control. Work hard for a life of freedom. For the Phoenix is not just a symbol of rebirth but also of transformation and time. You must take the time to transform your yourself to a better you and become reborn from the life that held you back. Be as free as they are. For no Phoenix bares chains.
I got a little philosophical there I apologize. But it’s all true. This is how you learn to incorporate and work with a Phoenix. By understanding their philosophy. Their way of life. It’s not an easy one. Some find it can be preventative to their growth. So at any time you feel the need to step back then please do. There’s more than one way to deal with the hardships in this life or even how to work your craft. But don’t forget once you’ve bonded with a Phoenix you’ve got a friend for life.
Next post will be the finale. It’ll include a few spells and visualizations. As well as the basics to a grounding meditation. Not to mention a better description of experiences with my spirit guide which is a Phoenix. Till next time this has been me Phoenix Brevitas and I’ll catch you later.

Do you think the ouija board is real?
Now that I’ve always wondered about!
I did play a Quija once with a couple of my friends.
I’m not gonna say we did it in the middle of a candlelight barn at 1 in the morning on a full moon because, we didn’t. We legit did it at like, 7 at night on a Tuesday. I was 16, and my best friend’s parents weren’t home. There were four of us and only two of us wanted to fuck with it.
She, who we’ll call Mermaid because she would kill me if I used her real name, and I opened it up and everything. We set it up. None of us wanted the lights off, so we turned them ALL on.
I wasn’t sure if it was her putting pressure on the little marker and pushing it around, but she seemed really fucking freaked out over the whole deal.
We started asking it questions, and for some reason it was talking to me and not her, and it was pissing her off. I was a little scared but I made a joke that apparently it liked me and not her, and the marker went to ‘no’ and I told that was cute, but to not fuck with me or we were gonna stop. She got all offended and told me she wasn’t, and it circled back to ‘no’.
Not to drag on, it started to spell out her name, and she legit looked like she was going to cry and I started to think this was the coolest thing in the world. So I asked it if it knew my name, and it circled over to ‘yes’, and I asked it if it would spell it, and it went to ‘no’. I asked it why a couple times and it kept going back to ‘no’.
One of the others in the room told us to ask it it’s name and I threw the thing away because it started to spell out Beezlebub.
To this day, I don’t know if they’re real or not, and I probably won’t ever know unless I do it with someone I know won’t move it to make me believe it’s working, so I don’t know if that was a real experience with the board. I think that it’s possible for something like that to work if you open your mind up enough, but I do NOT suggest going out and trying it. At all.

My friends and I (young and stupid at that time) decided to try a quija board despite my mother strictly telling me not to (she's russian and in russia people really believe in occult and paranormal things, we even have a holiday where we practice occult stuff). It's the worst mistake we could've possibly done. Do NOT fuck with a quija board. First of all it's really dangerous and you can set bad spirits free on accident and second it fucks with your mind. (1)
We all got extremely paranoid and to this day we don’t even mention what happened. I get chills talking about it (it was like 3 years ago) but we built one ourselves and put candles up, threw blankets over mirrors, closed doors and darkened the room. Then we started all of it and asked questions and it just started to move. None of us moved it because all of us put the finger on it really lightly so no one would cheat. Suddenly the candles started to flicker and shit and a glass fell down. (2)
It was horrible, really. Like the room got really cold and I couldn’t sleep for 3 weeks after it. Don’t ever try a quija board if you’re not extremely familiar with it and don’t try it for fun because believe me, if you fuck up it won’t be funny at all. So yeah, this was my paranormal experience with a quija board (3)
yeah that does seem really scary ;;;;;; i remember when i was younger, maybe like 12 or 13 me and my friends really wanted to try out a ouiji board, but we didn’t have one so we like made one out of paper lol. we lit candles and everything. didn’t work obviously, but maybe that’s a good thing ahaa

Precipice
He always woke up every morning at 6am covered in sweat with faint memories of a heat that burned his skin to a crisp. He couldn’t remember anything from his dreams other than the sweltering heat. Edward went about his days in a routine that ran like clockwork. Wake up, shower, class, lunch, more classes, dinner, study, homework, and sleep. Day in and day out this was Edward’s schedule never changing that is until he met her. She was the first woman that had ever caught his eye, to him she was gorgeous. Dark hair to her mid back, olive skin, and a slight smirk on her lips as she spoke to her friends before class, who was this goddess that he had stumbled across? Edward had never seen her before. He hadn’t changed his path from class to class but somehow she was now there. After days of watching her from a distance he had finally decided to be brave and to speak to her.
“Hello.” His voice was soft and trembling. She smiled acknowledging his presence. “My name is Edward; I haven’t seen you around here before. Are you new to this school?” He smiled softly trying to make her feel comfortable, he knew he was awkward standing at 6’3” and weighing barely 160 pounds soaking wet. His dark hair was oily and stringing despite his ritualistic morning shower. Edward had always been a loner. Friends were few and far between with him. He had one best friend in his entire life and that was only because they were cousins and their parents had made them play together. His cousin was all he had for the longest time until his cousin passed away in an accident while they were out playing in the woods. Since then he had been alone. He waited for her to speak.
“Hi, I am Lily.” Her voice was meek and almost mousey. She extended her hand for his. His was sweating and cold with the nervousness that was building inside him. “It is a pleasure to meet you Edward.” Her mouth curled into a slight smile. “What are you studying here?”
Edward shifted his weight worried that the next thing he said would scare the girl away. “I am studying parapsychology, the effects that the supernatural may have on the human mind and whether it is something that can be scientifically proven or if it is merely a mental disorder that we have yet to understand.” He looked at the ground fearful of what she may say.
“Interesting. I am studying to be a mortician.” She chuckled as Edward glanced up a bit in shock of her major.
“What? Surprised a bubbly girl could be into a profession that is a little dark?” she tilted her head waiting for his answer.
“Nnnnooo… “ he stuttered. “I mean it is a bit odd but everyone is allowed their own interests. I would love to understand why you picked that major.” He smiled. “May I take you to dinner?” A brave move for Edward, he was unsure why he felt so bold.
Lily nodded. “I would love that. Do you want to meet back here around 7?”
“Yes, let me get your number just in case we cannot find each other, I can text you where to meet me.”
They exchanged cell phones and each entered their respective numbers. Then they smiled and parted ways for the remainder of the day but he just could not get this lovely girl off his mind. At seven Edward made his way back to where he had first seen her. There she stood under one of the many campus lamps, her skin looked slightly white in the faded lamplight almost opalescent. When she turned to face him her eyes looked different than he remembered. Earlier that day they had been a dark brown but now there was hints of ruby within them. “Hey!” he blurted out in his excitement. She smiled and waved back. Stepping close he leaned in to give her a hug, she obliged. Her hair had a smell of campfire, smoky and comforting. “You ready to head to the restaurant?”
“Yes sir I am starving.” Her voice sounded as if she was holding back a laugh when she said starving. She smiled a wide grin and Edward noticed that her canines were a bit sharper than normal; he pushed the thought from his mind. He had been studying the paranormal too much and had imagined up vampires and werewolves one too many times. He was not going to let his weird hobbies get in the way of him getting to know this girl.
“So, I figured maybe steak? Or are you vegan?” He laughed awkwardly hoping that he hadn’t offended her in any way.
“Steak sounds great, I love meat.” Again a devious smile crossed her lips. As they walked they asked each other questions about their past, their families, their studies, and it seemed that they had a lot in common. Lily had grown up in a small town just like Edward. She didn’t have many friends because she was the daughter of the local funeral director.
“No one wanted to be friends with the girl who lived with dead bodies in her basement.” She sighed. They entered the restaurant and sat a table in the back keeping to themselves each questioning the other on different topics and interests.
Edward wanting to know if she had ever seen a spirit since she worked so closely with the deceased asked ‘Lily, when you were little was there ever anything unusual that happened at your home? Any disturbances that went unexplained?” His eyes were glimmering at the thought of stories from inside a funeral home, he had onced tried to conjure his cousin’s spirit with a Quija board.
Lily laughed softly “No, no ghost, no unexplained happenings. It was a normal home despite the mortuary.” Edward’s face read a little disappointed. “I am sorry Edward, I am just a normal girl with a weird back-story.” Lily smiled her canines looking a little sharper.
Edward ordered a steak well done; he couldn’t stand the red that leaked from the meat if not cooked all the way through, he hadn’t been able to eat a steak like that because it triggered a horrible gag reflex from deep within him, he had never known why. Lily did the same except she ordered medium rare, she glanced up at Edward. “I hope that you don’t mind, I like my steak a little bloody.” She flashed her canines; again Edward had visions of vampires and werewolves.
“No that is perfectly fine.” He stated as he shook his head to get the visions of blood and ghouls out of his mind. Lily took a sip of her red wine, the liquid leaking just slightly from the corner of her red lips. Edward took his napkin and wiped away the dribble.
“Thank you.” Lily whispered. “So tell me more about parapsychology.” She tilted her head with questioning eyes staring at him. Her eyes again flashed ruby in the weak lighting of the restaurant.
“Well” Edward smiled. “Honestly I believe in things most people don’t: things such as ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. These things have a lot of influence on the way we see the world. You may not realize it but have you ever had that feeling you are being watched as you walk home at night? Or thought you heard a voice when you knew for a fact that no one else was in your home? Deep down the thought of something else inhabiting a parallel dimension that can still interact with ours is in your head.” He could feel a smile spreading across his face as he spoke about his passions. “These things although never proven have such a great influence in our realm that the stories are never ending. There are always people claiming to have interacted with spirits. What we study is whether this is possible or just in their mind. I guess I got into this after the death of my cousin, I don’t remember much about that day. We were so little; I remember a lot of red, the funeral, but nothing really about what happened.”
“What do you believe, is it all in our heads these ghouls and goblins or do you think that they are real?” Lily asked with genuine interest.
“Honestly, I used to think there were these unexplainable things in this world and that we cohabitate this life with them, that they can manipulate our lives. However, after studying for years, I am starting to have my blind faith taken from me. Why have I never seen something that would prove their existence without a doubt, why do the people that claim to see them come off as crazy?’
“Maybe you have seen them but you just haven’t realized it. Maybe there are things in your life that are otherworldly but for some reason you just see them as normal beings.” She smiled a large smile. In that instance the light flickered and Edward thought he saw horns along her cheeks and at her temples. He blinked and she was again the beautiful girl he had seen this morning.
“Maybe.” He said. “Or maybe I went into the wrong field of study; maybe it is all just tricks of the mind.”
They finished their meal and Edward walked Lily home, before taking his leave he gave her a hug and whispered in her ear “I hope to see you again, this was a wonderful evening.”
Lily squeezed him back “I promise, you will see me soon.”
Edward took the long way home relishing the night that he had had with Lily. He was happy to find someone that didn’t find him to be awkward. She seemed like they could truly be open and free with each other. This was a new experience to Edward. Suddenly there was a bright light in Edward’s face. In the next moment he awoke in his bed covered in sweat just like every day before. He got up slowly feeling sore and sluggish which was different for him, normally his mornings were easy. He would wake and shower and not feel as though he had been hit by a bus. Outside his room he could hear the faint sound of people, which wasn’t unusual it was just today they sounded as if they were screaming.
Edward couldn’t remember how he had made it home. He stood for a moment thinking it through and figured that he had been in a day dream about Lily while walking and managed to autopilot his body home. He went to the bathroom to do his morning ritualistic cleansing. He stared at himself in the mirror as he brushed his teeth, his cheeks looked sunken in but he just figured he had slept a bit too hard. He hopped in the shower; the water was extremely hot almost burning his skin. He tried to adjust it but either way he turned the knobs it remained scorching. Rushing through his shower so as not to get third degree burns he finished dried off and dressed. Edward studied his closet before picking out his best outfit because he hoped to see Lily on his way to class. The voices outside were still screaming almost as if they were in pain.
Edward moved toward the door slowly opening it to see what the entire hubbub was about, as he stepped just outside his room he found himself on a precipice overlooking a fiery vortex with faces from within it. The faces were screaming in agony, one face he knew instinctively. It was his cousin. Tears came to his eyes seeing him in such pain. Looking up he glanced across the large expanse and on the other side there stood Lily with a smirk. Her eyes red in the fire light, her teeth sharper than he had ever seen.
It was then that Edward remembered the bright light he had seen while on his way home. In that moment he felt the pains of being struck by a tractor trailer. He jerked feeling the pains run through his spine, grabbing the door frame to keep from falling forward. A deep laugh echoed from across the vortex, Edward was struck with the realization that Lily was short for Lilith the mother of demons. How could he have been so foolish to think that a sweet girl would be into him? There he stood on the edge, knowing that his life was now hers to do with as she pleased.
“Do you believe in otherworldly things now Edward?” her voice so evil but light as she gloated. “We are always around but people like you just never realize what you are seeing because you are too blinded by your dull mundane lives. You should have seen the signs! You study us, yet here you are in my clutches. You allowed yourself to become so complacent until a beautiful girl snapped you from your zombie like state. You are so shallow and self absorbed that even last night you didn’t see the truck that you walked in front of. Welcome to Hell Edward. Welcome to the place that you condemned your cousin to many years ago”.
Edward looked back down into the vortex seeing his cousins scared face, it was still the face of a child, and how could this be. Flashes within his mind showed him their hideout in the woods, the trees; he could hear the storm and the surge of the water off in the distance. He saw himself as a child picking up branches and throwing them at other trees to see if they would break. He watched as they made their way to the river and saw the water swirling so tempestuously as it moved down the path. He had dared his cousin to jump in. His cousin had refused and for some reason he could fill the anger swelling from deep inside himself.
He witnessed the child Edward picked up a large limb that had fallen from the winds and strike his cousin in the head. The boy’s body fell immediate to the wet soil, the blood soaking the ground where he lay. Quickly without thinking young Edward shoved the body into the water and watched as it floated away.
Edward gasped “No! That isn’t real!”
“Deny it all you want Eddy but you have always known that you did something to him. He was popular, you weren’t. His parents praised him for everything that he did; you were told that you could always do better. You tricked yourself into thinking that you weren’t to blame. You lied and told everyone that he fell into the water, oh how those crocodile tears fooled them all. Now that years have went by you have repressed the memory of that day. You have lived a life of lies, a dull life, but still a life that was built on a lie. You killed your cousin. You knew it was wrong but you still did it because you were jealous. You little snake.” Lilith’s voice grew louder as did the sound of the vortex below. “And now it is time to pay!”
As she spoke the room behind him began to fade, the floor beneath him began to wobble. He knew he was going to fall into the vortex and be trapped forever within her clutches, why hadn’t he seen past everything and realized that she was exactly what he had been studying, a being that had more control than any human ever would. As the door frame disappeared his body lurched forward and he fell. The smell of burning skin and hair filled his nostrils. He screamed as he watched his own skin peel away from muscle and then muscle melt away to bone.
The beeping started and his eyes opened, 6am on the dot, soaked through with sweat from a heat that was all he could remember. He stood shaking off the feeling that he had lived this day before, the thought quickly fleeting from his mind as he went on with his daily routine: wake up, shower, class, lunch, more classes, dinner, study, homework, and sleep. Day in and day out this was his life.

Real Life Ghost Stories: Scary Sleepovers
By J. L. Thurston
Lately, I was chatting with a co-worker of mine. She had recently taken a trip to one of America’s most haunted cities, Savannah, Georgia. Though she had spent good money on a ghost tour, she returned from her trip with no real life ghost story to share with me. However, she did not disappoint. As we spoke, she began to tell me of her teenage years and the strange and terrifying experiences she had during a handful of sleepovers. What she said to me not only sent chills down my spine, but set my pen to paper in a rush to record every detail.
Amanda’s friends were typical, intelligent young girls. They went to school, they wondered about the future, they had sleepovers. But after an encounter with unexplainable happenings and a message from a medium, it would become clear that one of Amanda’s friends was not a typical teenager.
Amanda began telling me about the different strange activity she experienced. During a sleepover, she was beguiling her friends with a retelling of a nightmare.
“I went to the window,” she said, pointing to the very window that had starred in her dream. “And, all on its own, the roll-up blinds shot up! And staring at me from outside the window was… the Grim Reaper.”
Just as the words escaped her mouth, the blinds on the window rolled itself up. The sound of the canvas hitting the window frame sending electric shocks of fear down every spine in the room.
Another sleepover found Amanda and her friends in the basement. A Quija board made of permanent marker and a greasy pizza box sat before them.
“Are there any spirits with us?” one of the girls asked.
The cardboard spirit board did not respond, but a black shadow streaked across the basement wall to the stairs. Gasping, but unable to contain their excitement, the girls raced up the basement stairs after the shadow. At the top sat a little doll, kicked over onto its side. No one could explain what they saw, but they all agreed, it was the creepiest thing they’d ever seen.
So far.
Then Amanda began telling me a story unlike anything I’d heard before. The sincerity of the story, the lingering fear that lived her words, could only lead me to believe she was telling me the absolute truth.
It was another sleepover. Same friends, same antics. The house was newly built, one of the cookie cutter houses in the developing subdivisions. The neighborhood was mostly made of freshly dug earth and halfway completed landscaping. Five of the three story houses were complete. The house had neighbors, but not many. It almost felt like a country home. Isolated.
Amanda was on the computer just outside the kitchen on the first level. The rest of the sleepover was on the third floor. As she was checking her Facebook, she could hear someone moving a cup around in the kitchen. Clunk. A few seconds later another clunk. As though someone was taking one sip at a time and setting the nearly empty cup down hard on the counter between sips.
She quickly went upstairs to be close to her friends. But she did not tell them what she’d heard. She didn’t want to sound paranoid. But one of the other girls went downstairs and returned stating she heard someone moving a cup around in the kitchen.
“I didn’t want to say anything,” Amanda spoke up. “But earlier I heard it, too.”
A general feeling of insecurity began to overwhelm the girls. They were all alone with hardly any neighbors, and it sounded like someone else was in the house.
Quietly, they crept into the bathroom and locked themselves in. One of the girls called the closest neighbor boys and asked if they could come over to check things out.
The boys called back.
“Uh, we can see someone in your kitchen window,” said one of the boys. “Moving around. A white figure.”
Panic began to set in. The resourceful girls began heating up straightening irons, preparing to fight. Breanne, the host of the sleepover, called her mother.
“There’s someone in the kitchen!”
Breanne’s face twisted with fear as she listened to her mother on the other end.
“No, I swear! I’m not making this up. Can you come home, we’re really scared.”
After a moment, she hung up the phone. Her mother had just received a call from her sugared-up teenage daughter during a sleepover. She had not taken her plea for help seriously.
The girls were on their own. But where were the boys? Had they left? Were they too afraid to come in and help?
Footsteps could now be heard. One deliberate stomp after the other, climbing the stairs. From the kitchen in the first floor to the landing on the second. Thump, thump, thump. Whoever it was, whatever it was, they were coming for the girls.
The heavy footfalls were drawing nearer and nearer. The girls crowded together, eyes glued to the door, waiting for the shadow to fall upon the gap at the floor. At last, the footfalls could be heard on the landing just outside the bathroom door. It had made it to them. Just a door width away.
Suddenly, there were shouts from the kitchen. “Breanne? Amanda?”
“Girls? Are you here?”
The neighbor boys!
The girls began screaming and shouting from the bathroom. “Upstairs!”
“We’re in here!”
“Help!”
Thundering footsteps ran up the stairs. A herd of teenage boys coming to the rescue. They had returned home only briefly to retrieve baseball bats after spotting the figure in the kitchen. They blazed into the bathroom and began sweeping the house. Every room was empty. There was no evidence that anyone else had been there.
As Amanda was telling me this, I could tell she’s leading me somewhere.
“It turns out my friend, Breanne,” she continued. “Had a lot of things like that happen to her. Once she could hear someone jumping on her bed, but when she looked no one was there. Then she heard someone in her walk-in closet. When she approached the door, the doorknob rattled.”
“No fucking way,” was my response. It wasn’t an indication of disbelief, it was a plea for more juicy details.
“So, later,” Amanda went on. “One of Breanne’s neighbor approaches her. She tells her that she’s a medium and has something important to tell her. The medium says, ‘I have to tell you that you have a spirit following you. It is a jokester spirit.’”
Whatever that meant, well, I guess it is self-explanatory. And it really does explain a lot. If you can believe in those sort of things. But one of the things I found interesting was that any time Amanda witnessed something otherworldly, Breanne was always there. And the girls are still friends to this day, but the ghostly encounters have ceased.
Was the jokester spirit real? If so, did he get bored of Breanne because she grew up and began adulting?
I have no answers for you. That is what makes stories like these so enjoyable. We cannot explain them. We can only enjoy hearing about them, or- in some cases- live through them.
