I’m assuming Maryellen’s Vacation Playsuit is meant to go with her Airstream trailer, campfire cook set, and hiking accessories, even though it looks like it’s much more suited to playing at the beach instead of a rugged hike through the woods. Would really like to see a proper hiking ensemble for her, but the playsuit is fucking adorable so I’m just gonna love it.

Trailers, campers, RVs, and mobile homes were popularized in the 1950s as outdoorsy home-away-from-homes for the middle class. You could tow one behind your car and have a way to travel and go camping that didn’t involve actually experiencing discomfort.

People figure out pretty quick that they made for decent living spaces, and they were actually advertised as being a mortgage-free way to own a home.

Anyone who grew up in America knows that “trailer” quickly became synonymous with “trash.” To show how the mobile home went from an object of middle-class luxury to one primarily associated with poverty, I’m going to trace the history of what was once the skankiest trailer park in Seffner: the Scarab Trailer Park.

The property was bought in 1951 back before Seffner suburbanized, and it was primarily orange groves and scrubland. It had several trailers permanently parked there, as well as a couple of small office buildings. It rented trailers for the week, so families living in Tampa who wanted to get away for the weekend could come out and enjoy nature.

By all accounts, it was a really nice place, and had it been preserved, the trailers there would have been excellent relics of mid-century design. Along with vacationing families, the single-week rentals made the trailers popular abodes for the migrant farm workers who came in to work the orange groves.

Soon, Seffner went from being out in the boonies to being the suburbs. Two strip shopping centers were built on either side of the park. Families didn’t want to vacation here any more. The week-long rentals meant that the park was now primarily being occupied by the very poor and transient. In the 1970s, the property was sold to a new owner who was very uninterested in keeping the park the nice place it once was. One of the other things about living in trailers is that they weren’t built to last like a proper home is. They started falling apart, and their tenants didn’t have the money to make repairs. By the 90s, the Scarab Trailer Park was fucking gross.

In 2004, the property was once again sold, and the new owner evicted the tenants on very short notice, leaving them effectively homeless.

The trailers were torn down, and today the property is a Tractor Supply Store. Landlords are scum of the fucking earth. Capitalism must be destroyed.

"You've always been there," Steve whispered.

The words swirled around in Nancy's head as she stared at him. The images of Steve’s dream intermingling with her own, not destroying anything or taking away from her dream. No, it was combining with her dream and making it bigger, making it brighter. She could see it, crowding in the RV with the kids and their dog, of course. She was making last-minute changes to an article with Steve trying to settle the kids down and then with them both succeeding as they yelled together. Watching Steve on the beach, talking with their oldest as they confided in him about their sexuality, and Steve hugging them tightly. Their child giving Nancy a thumbs up. She could see herself dancing with Steve on the beach, laughing as Steve let her take the lead. Both of their reflexes kicked in, and they managed to catch a kid before they did something stupid. Steve and Nancy are arguing passionately without any heat behind it.

"Nancy, are you - "

Nancy pulled Steve into a deep kiss, nails scraping against the nape his neck as she pressed her lips hard against his. She pulled back without waiting for a response. Steve looked at her, blinking slowly as his mouth fell open.

"Um, I mean, I hope you didn't feel pressure to do anything. I just thought you should know how I feel even though I know you're with Jonathan - " Steve started to say.

"We fizzled out months ago," Nancy said. "I don't think we were ever going to work out, but I think I needed to try with him, and I think we both needed the time apart to really decide what we want. In the back of mind, you've always been there too."

"Yeah?" Steve asked.

"Yeah," Nancy said. "About your dream - "

"Uh, we don't have to do all that if you don't want to," Steve said nervously.

"Can we have a dog?" Nancy said.

"Uh, yeah, definitely, and about the six kids thing, I was joking - I mean, not that six kids is a terrible thing, and not that we couldn't handle it but I was thinking a couple and I always thought when I had kids, I would adopt because - ," Steve was saying quickly.

"Yes! This is going to sound weird, but I totally have a phobia of pregnancy - " Nancy said.

"Me too!" Steve exclaimed with a grin. "It totally freaks me out, but also, I want to give kids who don't have a home, well, a home."

"Me too," Nancy said and winced. "It freaked me out when Mom was pregnant with Holly. She thought I hated my sister."

"The movie Alien for me," Steve blushed.

"There's so many things we still don't know about each other," Nancy said with a smile. "I can't wait to find out more."

"Me neither. Also, we're probably going to have to get an apartment over the garage for Robin to grow old in," Steve said, and Nancy laughed. "We have a death pact, so you're going to have to appeal to Robin if you want to get in on that."

"Well, I think I can manage," Nancy said with a smile. "I like Robin. You know, I was jealous of her because I really thought that you and her were, well, together."

"No, platonic with a capital p, platonic soulmates," Steve said and smiled. "It's cute to think that you were jealous."

"Shut up," Nancy smiled. "Anyway, it's not a problem. None of this is. . .I mean, I think we definitely still need to talk about these things, but I think my biggest fear when we were together was turning into this nuclear family, picture perfect on the outside but unhappy on the inside. I realize now that that's where my relationship with Jonathan was going. I know now that our family is going to be anything but nuclear."

"Yeah, I think I was trying so hard with trying not to be like my parents with, you know, pretending like everything was okay that I was turning down that road anyway," Steve said.

"I think we just had really poor timing," Nancy said softly.

Steve leaned down and kissed her. Nancy wrapped her arms around his neck as she returned the kiss. She could feel wetness on her cheeks. Was she crying, or was Steve? Oh, they were both crying and smiling into the kiss. Nancy broke it and buried her head into Steve’s neck, hugging him tightly as Steve did the same.

"I love you, Steve Harrington, I always have," Nancy said.

"I love you too," Steve whispered.

"Hey, the house is up - Oh, shit, I'm interrupting!" Robin squealed. "Oh, is this happening? This is definitely happening. Yes!"

Nancy pulled away from Steve with a laugh.

"I think I'll be okay with having her live above the garage if she's going to be this supportive," Nancy said.

"He's talking about the garage thing again?" Robin sighed. "What's going to happen when I get a girlfriend?"

"Oh," Nancy said with a smile. "Oh, just tell her you live with your platonic soulmate, his wife, their kids, and their dog."

"Oh, is that all?" Robin asked.

"It's a sitcom that I'd watch," Steve quipped.

Nancy laughed with Steve and took his hand as they walked to the Creel House. She watched Robin take his other one, and she couldn't help but wonder how she ever could have thought that they were anything but platonic. They were going to get through this, and with great difficulty, they did. In the end, they saved the world, they saved Max, they saved Eddie, and they saved each other.

He even manages to have some fun with it. But the entire time, his mind is racing. Like a duck, or an iceberg about to menace the Titanic. 

He’d checked with Robin since the War Zone and been assured within an inch of his life that they are capital-P Platonic.

Fact: Steve had just let him blackmail him for no reason.

The girl is vicious in her description of the guy’s financial shortcoming. Her brief tirade is softened only by a sniff and the small concession that at least Steve is saving up for a place on his own, instead of relying on his parents not charging him rent forever. 

And no, he also did not know that said parents were making him pay-to-own his precious Beemer. Or that Steve failed to negotiate for a reasonable payment plan to offset the basic living costs (like food) that they don’t cover. Jesus H. Christ.

Fact: Eddie blackmailing him is directly impacting Steve’s ability to get out from under the thumb of his own family. Which, rich parents can be assholes too, who knew.

He looks over at Steve and Robin over by the RV, filling bottles with gasoline, and feels guilt flutter hotly in his gut. For all the bills that Steve had forked over, he hadn’t griped about it once. Every hit Eddie has seen him take, financial or physical, he’s absorbed like a goddamn sponge and then carried on with whatever he’s doing like a goddamn tank.

Soon enough, the sun will go down and they’ll hit the road for the Creel house, bound for whatever other hits might come. 

Fact: Eddie has been punching down these past several months when he thought (or pretended, because the suspicion had always been there) he was punching up.

LOLLL I'm so glad this occurred to somebody. It's actually a plot point in the next chapter! All of the employees at UnderHand are pretty much stuck at the office 24/7. The company owns you. But that looks different depending on your position.

Basically, the higher-level employees (like Caroline Wasp and the executives working on the upper floors) actually have bathrooms with showers in their offices. The offices themselves function like apartments, with big leather couches that they sleep on or murphy beds hidden in bookshelves.

But where do the exploited, overworked cubicle drones shower? The truly desperate just wash up in the sinks. The savvier, more long-term employees live in weird little RV villages in the parking garage (which you'll visit). But for clever, broke interns like you and Hyde, there's a solution hidden in the laboratories:

Taemin leaving SM; a retrospective rant from a severely uneducated and overly caffeinated fan.

I have thoughts about Taemin leaving SM and by extention Onew too. Might as well drag Minho and Key into this.

Since this is majorly about Taemin, let's talk about him first.

Taemin & SM (pre-NGDA era)

Taemin has been with the company for 16 years, closer to 19 if you count his trainee days. As an older shawol (LLO-era, got me whipped BAD), it was seriously out of the blue that Taemin would be the first to debut solo. SM at the time (i.e in their prime) was a vocal powerhouse and I genuinely thought Jonghyun would be the first one to go solo. SM made the right decision dedicating time and resources in letting him shine and 'Ace' was a phenomenal debut album for Taemin and really stamped that 'Taemin vibe/sound' we all know and love' Generally speaking SM not the best for promotions/scheduling, but the company still had their shit together when 'Move' came out, it felt like it was everywhere and surpassed the noteriety Guilty had achieved. I feel like when Taemin does variety shows, up to now, Move was always the most referenced and remembered act, even amongst the junior idols, that he did and thats because SM did go hard on promoting that song and picked a quiet month to do that comback in.

Taemin vs SM (during/post-NGDA era)

Somewhere along the lines, SM really dropped the ball with promoting Act 1 especially during Taemin's 'Criminal' comeback. They heavily prioritized their newer groups and suddenly their legendary acts were getting shafted with poor promotions and what felt like less dedicated management and resources. I recall, SM postponed the release for Criminal, squashed Taemin in Super-M activties and focused on their new acts while simultaneously over working them (honestly Mark has had such a hectic few years). My internal speculation/assumtion is that, SM figured that acts like SuJu, EXO, SHINee, GG and RV and solo/ duo units, wouldn't need as much dedicated promotions because they are iconic acts and they are fully dependant on fanbases to generate the buzz. Which leads me to my main hypothesis that after a few years of being active, SM really does not care about an artist anymore. Mind you artists that put them on the fucking map to begin with. SM won't double down on these artists because they believe they can't appeal to a younger audience. With the shitshow that was the Criminal promotions. SM really didn't do any better with 'Advice'. Pinning aespa's comeback a day before was a low blow instead of focusing on the talent that's about to go into the military, if they are aware enough to give Taemin a mini comeback so his relevancy sticks throughout his service, why damage it with an aespa release (that felt like it was to tactically avoid facing off the BTS release later than month) and basically doing NOTHING bar announcing pre-orders. Then we enter the 'Guilty' era. Which as we saw was a hit, but mainly because SM capitalized on the power of social media trends, placing Taemin in VARIOUS online contents and slowly dropped related media during winter. I mean we are still not over his 'Guilty' era, the Metamorph concert still has us at a chokehold. I 'd like to think that Taemin became more vocal in what he wanted and expected out of SM when he came back. Obviously the priority to them is/was SHINee and that's fair. DCM did really well with promos (althoughlike most shawols would say, LSM did have a major part to play with that). HOWEVER it was their 15th anniversary comeback last year and I feel like SM treated it like it was just another comeback instead of a major milestone. There were no interviews or press releases for Hard, when events were happening, it felt like it was gate kept to just local fans, like it made me feel like I was living under a rock because it was so last minute and I was not aware of anything. I want to believe that just because SM did an okay job now, excuses them for the last 3 years. What's worse is it's undeniable, Taemin lives to perform and it's no secret he sets some high goals and standard for himself and probably the toll 1) not getting to preform Guilty in GDA, despite wanting to and 2) probably not getting a solid backing for touring globally, despite very vocal fan support. I am not sure if anyone saw that SM forecast for the first two quarters of 2024, but it genuinely feels like Taemin knows that him and SHINee will not be a priority after promotions are finished. I hope I am not dense enough to assume that obviously SHINee has spoken about this privately and internally for a while now. It's really something you can't avoid talking about. Taemin has spoken to his hyungs, people in his circle inside and outside of the industry. Hopefully he is well informed and supported and it seems definite that SHINee is still active as a group.

Key vs SM.

Someone has already mentioned it but if anyone was leaving SM for creative freedom, I genuinely thought it would be Key. 'Bad Love' was an amazing release and Key fought with SM to release with his own brand/aesthetic. Because Taemin's imminent departure is so publicized, SM might be keeping the talks with Minho and Key super under wraps and trying to offer a btter deal. Although recently, bar Good and Great, SM has been using Key as a 'Variety' idol than an actual singer, which sucks because Key is super talented and if SM doesn't recognize that star power now, good luck to them. Also apparently, Kany is signed with BPM? I know she is close with SHInee in general, but I would assume it'd be Key joining her ya'know?

Minho vs SM.

Imma put it out there, the promotions for 'Stay for a Night' was lackluster? I feel like they treat solo Minho and SHINee Minho as two separate entities. Like yes there is a dualism of being a group preformer vs solo preformer. But on the rare occasion SHINee does get promoted Minho seems to get more attention, but as a solo artist, I don't feel the same love for his solo promotions. I hope Minho gets to write and contribute more, which I believe he does in the background. If he does stick to SM, I pray they open other avenues of artistry, primarily, he does really well with his acting roles and yes it really helps that he does fit the 'K-drama ML' look.

Onew vs SM

I feel like Onew gets the short-end of the stick out of the rest of SHINee, never mind that the man has the voice of an angel, but again, he is another one that SM never bothered to market right. It kind of make sense that he would want to leave the company and seek ones that would expand his career inside and outside of singing and while the one good thing SM did recently is make sure Onew was healing and taking care of himself, recent SHINee promo activities feels like they are treating Onew's break as a hush hush 'taboo topic' Honestly, bring back the era where our idols would randomly disappear during promotions because they were casted to be on-stage again. I am still forever clinging onto Onew singing opera, because despite him not being trained for that, he has the talent to do so. It'd be nice to hear him produce his own music, or give acting another shot.

They brought me in because of the offer of housing out here on a limited timeframe. I thought we had base goals in common--a genuine passion for raising food, a love for animals, horror with capitalism and industrialized food production, a need to build real community

Turns out the leader is a textbook narcissistic disorder, paranoid, deeply mentally ill person who feels every problem in the world right now can be fixed by people eating different food. She believes she has a duty to intensely and harshly criticize and "educate" everyone around her and has even alienated her own family besides her husband and teen kids. Who all spend their time online, depending on the labor of people placed in a farmhand/The Help situation.

I was worried when a friend visited and had a fast food bag in the car they could see. I felt guilty for keeping my trailer above 50 degrees or showering for more than 5 minutes. I felt guilty using my energy to take walks and runs, even though that was waking me up to aliveness again. I was "helped" by her telling me if I wanted to build muscle I needed to stop doing cardio and use their exercise equipment instead. But not too late at night! Because I was harming the community by going to sleep at midnight. So of course she had to tell me in detail how if I changed my diet, I'd behave just like them one day 🙃

It took me a long time to realize, no matter how often and clearly I spoke up, the patterns weren't going to change. I did learn a lot about advocating for myself.

We had The Big Talk and I realized I couldn't stay. I am so thankful that Thax was there on speaker phone, not participating but hearing what came out of these peoples' mouths. That's what it took, someone else finding their behavior genuinely disturbing and inhumane

It was really scary for a little while, though, not knowing where I'd go. I'm relieved and safe now living at the kennel i work at. And am appreciated for my strengths finally! It's just that with 4 dogs, even most options to park an RV (a generous gift of some kind of security) were a immediate no. That's why my options were so limited in the first place and why I was so grateful to them.

god. au squared jesse in season 1 obviously cares about baby and loves her a lot, but shes 4 months old and he didnt know what to do for most of those 4 months and was mostly fine relying on his parents to answer a lot of those questions even if he despised all the judgment he got from them. he loves her, but he also likes being young and irresponsible and not having to constantly problem solve and stress about a tiny little life. but then here comes walt and his life completely changes and jesse starts. Wanting baby. capital W wanting. during the cooks, he looks forward to coming home to baby. when he wakes up in the hospital after tuco and his crew beat him, his first thought is baby. the entirety of "grilled" is him about to jump out of his own skin because it's not just that he doesnt want to fucking die: he doesnt want to die and never see baby again. and then it culminates with "down", where his parents are kicking him out of ginny's house and diane instinctively starts to take baby from him so she can be raised in a proper environment, and jesse won't let go. also instinctive. just a few months ago, he probably would have been okay letting his mom take her, but the thought now horrifies him. he knows he's in way too deep and that he's not going to be able to give baby Everything, but after all these near death experiences and general insanity, he's realized that baby is the most important thing to him. the Only good thing. his purpose. he'd rather sleep on the floor of an impounded RV than sleep comfortably without her by his side.

for some reason the public image of (gray) wolves being Huge is really important to me because i think there is something very interesting about, like, conservation angles not coming from a “cute pubby” side & more so like “here is this animal and its unique & impactful ecology & it is essential to care about their survival even if that means acknowledging them as able to kill livestock or frighten you” because there is something very glorious about it all. also efforts to protect / defend nature shouldn’t have to appeal to how palatable or cute or convenient the species is. this isn’t to approach small subspecies of wolves (or other small & endangered animals) frivolously whatsoever. but. idk. i don’t think it’s good to approach nature as if you’re not part of it & as if we must march towards a future where extinction of other animals is inevitable & forests become sanitized monocultures (ie, profitable trees planted where old growth forests once stood) & human engagement (& im speaking as a settler so there is an entire indigenous perspective i am lacking & probably failing to give any due diligence here) becomes separate from nature as if we have and should bent/bend the forests to our will so that we may enjoy them with our families from the safety of our RVs, thus destroying biodiversity & failing to see the ways that colonialism + capitalism CONTINUE to thwart meaningful connections & relationships to land. like what if we were able to engage with nature (& many many other avenues or aspects of our life and world, really) as complex and sometimes frightening but regardless worthy of our deepest respect even if we can’t engage with it in ways that we are used to understanding (you cannot pet huge cute pubby). My controversial kpop opinion is that they shouldn't of had to edit the Happiness mv. The whole thing is about capitalism and the view of the modern world, having the atomic bomb and 9/11 being referenced isn't that left field.

I hate late stage capitalism so fucking much. My boyfriend and I have been waiting and will continue to wait to get married because the engagement ring will be one event we must save for and the wedding, another. It will take years before we can afford that and also in the meantime, we're saving up to buy an RV so we can own our housing since buying a house is utterly out of the question.

By the time we save up enough for the engagement, the wedding, and our RV, I'm going to be 40 years old. I refuse to have a child unless I'm certain I can afford everything to set them up for success and it's looking like I'm not going to be able to afford to (responsibly) become a mother.

I have a mental disability and I need medications to be functional. Just lost Medicaid so now I can't even afford to be sane and healthy anymore. I'm trying so hard to hold it together but why even bother? I'm not going to be able to afford the most basic of human dreams, a family. Wtf kind of world are we living in where people are too poor to even have children? No children means no workforce, no workforce means no corporations and no corporations and no people means no wealthy elite class. Does the wealthy elite not see that the exact road they are marching us down will lead directly to their own demise? And before the demise, they will lose all status and power because without any other humans, there is no one to hold power over or to outrank with status and riches. What's the fucking point?

This is the dystopian nightmare people. We are living in it! Anarchy would be a gentle warm hug compared to harshness and cruelty of late stage capitalism and nothing anyone says will ever convince me otherwise.
