★ Salman Khan returns as super cop in ‘Dabangg 3’, but ducks politics!  -December 17, 2019
Tumblr media
Eight minutes into our telephone conversation with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, the call gets disconnected. The timing is suspicious. My question before was about his take on the troubled political climate in India and how it may affect his new film ‘Dabbang 3’, out in the UAE this Thursday on December 19 and a day later in India. After ringing him again, Khan — who plays a cheeky cop Chulbul Pandey in the movie — declares right away: “We are only going to speak about positive things.”
The 53-year-old star, who is idolised by millions of movie mad fans, is in no mood to be drawn into any political debate.
India has been witnessing widespread protests as a result of the country's parliament passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which many consider to be anti-Muslim. Khan joins a list of Bollywood actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra Jonas who have withheld comment and want to remain apolitical as thousands take to the streets to protest the controversial act. Legendary actor Rajinikanth also adopted a similar no-stand stance in a recent film-related function. But Khan doesn’t mind taking a stand when it comes to the issue of censorship on web platforms.
Tumblr media
This bankable actor, who has famously rejected dark roles and avoids risque scenes in films, believes there should be stringent laws in place regarding what content is available online.“I think there should be a censor board on that. A film like ‘Dabbang’ gets a U/A certificate [unrestricted public exhibition subject to parental guidance for children below the age of 12] and my film like ‘Wanted’ gets an ‘A’ [restricted to adults] certificate because of all that action in it. In social media, anybody can go on and watch anything. There has to be a censor on that,” said Khan. But doesn’t that curtail your freedom as an artist and your liberty to watch what you like as a viewer, we counter.“It depends… If you have a 10-year-old daughter and she picks up your phone and stumbles upon some bad content, then what liberty is that?,” adds Khan.He doesn’t have much faith in child-locks on phones or password protection either.“What happens when she gets her own phone,” he counters.
Khan has no such fears when it comes to his own films. His reasons are painfully simple.“‘Dabbang 3’ is a positive clean film which you and your whole family can watch without being embarrassed in front of your elders or children,” said Khan, who’s decidedly old-school.Apparently, Khan single-handedly sanitised ‘Dabbang’ and its lovable lead hero in khakhi uniform. His motive is to thoroughly entertain his fans with vanilla content and have ‘fun’ in the process as an actor. The highly lucrative ‘Dabbang’ series celebrates a lead hero who can sing, dance and rattle off bombastic dialogues about good vs evil without any difficulty and are an ode to larger-than-life Bollywood action adventures that were popular a few decades ago. Usual tropes such as a simpleton in a small town, a fetching village belle and a brute villain are all a part of the Dabbang grid.
Tumblr media
“I wanted Dabbang to have action, romance and comedy. It has to have good Vs evil. Chulbul Pandey can be a slightly grey character, but not too dark. And these are the elements that I liked about him,” he said.Khan — who has survived a checkered personal life filled with several brushes with the law — seems to inhabit an utopian world where he wants men in khakhi police uniforms to be a saviour or a superhero of sorts to the common man on the streets.“We want somebody who is out there and willing to take you as his own. You want someone who will wash the crime off from the streets and who supports the good, while flushing out evil,” said Khan. While his take is an idealistic description of law-enforcement officers, the reality may be far different in India right now where there’s a perceived rise in police brutality as police officers allegedly unleash violence on unarmed students in Delhi. But Khan, like most actors, keeps himself insulated and isolated from the ground realities.
He seems to have his designer blinkers on and all he wants to do is good work.As 2019 comes to a close with Khan’s larger-than-life action adventure ‘Dabbang 3’ Khan hopes for a work-filled 2020.“I am looking forward each and every single moment of my life. I want to live my life to the fullest and work the hardest. I want to work really hard. There was a time when I was 15 and I was modelling looking for work. So now I have work and so why shouldn’t I work? Even though 30 or 35 years have gone by in this profession, I have not forgotten what it is not to have work. There’s nothing better than work in this planet.
Tumblr media
He has a unique way of paying back for all that kindness and adulation that he has received over the decades. He’s on a mission to launch as many new faces in his films and inject new, young blood into Hindi cinema. In Dabbang 3, he launches seasoned actor Mahesh Manjrekar’s daughter, Saiee Manjrekar. He has also famously launched the careers of stars including Sonakshi Sinha, Katrina Kaif and Daisy Shah.“The first film which is responsible for becoming who I am is ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ and that was my training ground. Before that, my training ground was home. If Sooraj Bharjatya [director of Maine Pyaar Kiya] could have launched me at a time where things were very difficult, I can do the same for someone else. He was young, I was very young and he took a chance on me. And now, I look at it as a chance of giving back to society,” said Khan.

Move over Chulbul Pandey, Chandra Shekhar Aazad is here | Opinion - mumbai news
Tumblr media
There’s something almost poetic about Dabangg 3, directed by Prabhu Deva and starring Salman Khan, being released the very week that the police are having a bit of a moment nationwide. While Khan lost his pants in an effort to tell us the origin story of inspector Chulbul Pandey, real policemen were redefining their roles to the public as they tackled protesters who wanted to register their opposition to the recently notified Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).In Maharashtra, the protests have been mostly peaceful with police standing on the fringes, often carrying sticks and shields, but rarely interfering in the protests (i.e. doing their job right). In fact, on December 19, when Mumbai saw more than 20,000 people gather at August Kranti Maidan to protest CAA, a friend actually got directions from the police. She had walked past an entry point to the maidan when an on-duty policeman called out and said, “Madam! The protest is this way.” Another, stationed at a security check, scanned the items in a photographer’s bag and said approvingly, “Nice bag.” And he was right. It was indeed a stylish backpack.Nagpur Police was reportedly less chirpy, but their threatening behaviour doesn’t hold a candle to what protesters have accused the police of in Chulbul Pandey’s home state of Uttar Pradesh. Perhaps the most chilling part of watching the terrifying videos of individuals being attacked by a swarm of khaki-clad men is to hear witnesses cheering in support of the violence unfolding before them. There’s no horror in their voices as they film the incident. Instead, you hear jubilant bloodlust, much like what laces the reaction Chulbul gets in theatres when he says dialogues like, “Ek hota hai policewala aur ek hota hai goonda. Hum kehlate hai policewala goonda (There are cops and there are thugs. I’m what you could call a police thug).” In the past week, many have raised eyebrows at how the biggest names in Bollywood have opted to say nothing condemning the violence that students have been subjected to for opposing CAA. At a promotional event for another cop-action drama, actor Rajinikanth was asked for his views on the police response to student protests. He said “I don’t want to talk about politics,” and his fans cheered loudly. That Dabangg 3, a staggeringly violent film about a rogue cop, would have the fifth-highest opening day of 2019 in a week crammed with accounts of police brutality, is yet another timely reminder that the Indian public is faithful to its heroes. The saddest part of all this is that the public deserves better stories and heroes than what the Indian film industry routinely delivers. Dabangg 3 may have collected Rs 20 crore at the box office, but it’s difficult to tell what is older – the tropes it falls back on or its hero. Meanwhile, we’re witnessing real-life popcorn-worthy drama like how Bhim Army leader Chandra Shekhar Aazad gave the police the slip at a protest at Jama Masjid in Delhi on Friday. He got out of the police’s grasp within minutes and escaped by running from house to house and jumping over terraces. After a few hours, he returned to the steps of the Masjid and announced his presence with a tweet. Take that, Rajni Sir and Salman Bhai (both of whom would need stuntmen and computer-generated imagery to pull off such an escape on screen). Much later, after many were detained and allegations of police brutality started streaming in, Aazad again tweeted that he would surrender to arrest if those detained would be released. His last message, recorded just before being taken away by the police, contained an appeal to protest peacefully. It’s worth mentioning that Aazad was the inspiration for the Dalit leader Nishad in Article 15. However, Bollywood couldn’t imagine the heroism that Aazad displayed in real life on December 20. The only eventuality that the film could come up with for Nishad was death in an encounter staged by the police. Read the full article

Rajinikanth condemns Centre over Delhi violence, says "resign if you can't crush it with iron fist"
CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday lashed out at the Central government over the violence in Delhi that left 24 people dead, saying the riots should have been dealt with an iron fist.
In a rare sharp attack on the BJP-led Centre, Rajinikanth also asked those in power to “resign and go” if the violence could not be crushed with an iron fist.
However, he did not name anyone.
His contemporary and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan hailed Rajinikanth’s remarks, saying this was the ‘right path.’
“Definitely it is Central government’s intelligence failure. I strongly condemn the Central government,” he told reporters here when asked about the violence in northeast Delhi that killed 24 people including a policeman and an IB official.
“They should have been so careful when the US President (Donald) Trump had visited (the country). The intelligence didn’t do its job properly. It (violence) should have been completely crushed with an iron fist. We expect them to be careful at least from now on,” he added.
To a question, he said intelligence failure meant failure of the Union Home Ministry.
“With iron fist this should be crushed, else (they) should resign and go..what is this..it is becoming too much,” he said.
The violence should have been nipped in the bud and it was the job of both the Centre and the state government, he said, apparently referring to the AAP government.
Asked if he wanted the protests to be crushed, Rajinikanth said he didn’t refer to the anti-CAA agitations but asserted that such protests should not give way to violence.
The actor, who recalled his earlier statement that he will stand by Muslims if they were affected by the amended citizenship law, said he did not see CAA being withdrawn since it was adopted by both houses of Parliament, before being given the Presidential assent.
Therefore, the protests may not yield any results, he said responding to the ongoing anti-CAA agitation here, besides the occasional ones across the state.
“Immediately I am being branded as the BJP’s mouthpiece, that the BJP is behind me, especially some senior journalists and political observers,” he regretted.
However, he reiterated he will “definitely stand” by those who are affected by the CAA.
The actor, who has announced he will face next year’s Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, also wanted the media to play a constructive role during such times.
He further lashed out at politicians and individuals instigating people by making provocative statements using religion, saying this also should be dealt with firmly, else “it will be difficult in the future.”
Kamal Haasan in a tweet in Tamil, said the path chosen by Rajinikanth is the right one and welcomed him.
“Sabash friend @rajinikanth. This path is the right path (it is) not a separate path…,” he said in an apparent reference to the actor’s famous dialogue in a film that “my path is separate path.”
