What is Data Protection Act in India?
Introduction
Data Protection Act in India is a law that provides for the protection of personal data. It was first introduced in 2007, and it has been revised multiple times since then. In this article, we will discuss what the proposed Data Protection Act in India includes and how it compares with GDPR.
Data Protection Act in India
The Data Protection Act, 2018 is the primary legislation governing data protection in India. It sets out the principles that organizations should follow to ensure that their personal information is handled with care and security.
The bill was passed by Parliament on March 27, 2018 and came into force on April 1, 2018.[1] It replaced the previous Personal Data Protection Bill, 2012 which had been in effect since July 1, 2012.[2] This second draft was made public by Home Minister Rajnath Singh after intense lobbying by civil society groups who felt it did not go far enough in protecting people's privacy rights.[3][4][5][6]
First Point of Focus is the Personal Data
Data protection act in India
A. What is personal data?
Data is any information that can be used to identify or contact an individual, such as name, address and email id. Personal information includes names, addresses and contact details of individuals; biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans; financial information (such as credit card numbers); health records; genetic characteristics/proteins in blood samples etc., etc., which can be used for identification purposes by an individual or group of individuals. Sensitive personal data are those which relate to racial or ethnic origin, political opinions or religious beliefs of an individual; criminal history including mental illness or disability; sexual orientation/identity (e.g., gay/lesbian).
The second point of focus is the ‘Personal Information’
The second point of focus is the ‘Personal Information’. This means any information that specifically identifies an individual, such as his/her name, date of birth and address. It also includes anything else which can be used to identify an individual (e.g., fingerprints or facial features).
The term ‘sensitive personal data’ has been defined in Section 2(1)(b) as follows:
"Sensitive personal data" means any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person who can be directly or indirectly traced back to him/her by means of such information."
The third point of focus is on the “Sensitive Personal Data”
The third point of focus is on the “Sensitive Personal Data”. This is information about race, religion, caste, tribe, ethnic origin or political opinions. It also includes philosophical beliefs and union membership.
In India there are two types of sensitive personal data - namely genetic data (including DNA), biometric information such as fingerprints or iris scans etc., national identification numbers issued by a central authority such as Aadhaar card issued under Section 7(1) of Aadhaar Act 2016 which has been put in place by Government through its Rule making power under Article 239B(1) in order to establish an identity management system across various government departments and agencies including UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). Therefore every authority must ensure that they comply with this law while collecting any kind of sensitive personal information from individuals who are involved in the process
The fourth point of focus is on the “Proprietary Data”
The fourth point of focus is on the “Proprietary Data”. This refers to any data that is not publicly available, but which can be used by an individual or organization.
Proprietary data may be personally identifiable information (e.g., name and address), financial information (e.g., credit card number), business process details (e.g., sales data), customer lists or similar types of information that can only be accessed by one party at a time for specific purposes such as marketing campaigns or product development etc
How does the proposed Data Protection Act in India compare with GDPR?
The proposed Data Protection Act in India is similar to GDPR in that it has a broad definition of personal data and sets out a number of principles for protecting the same. However, there are some key differences between these two pieces of legislation:
The proposed Data Protection Act excludes “sensitive data” from its scope (which would include ethnic origin and religious belief). While this may seem like an advantageous feature at first glance, it could actually prove problematic if you need access to sensitive information about your clients or employees. For example, if someone were being treated for cancer and needed their diagnosis recorded on their file as part of their treatment plan—and that information was deemed too important not just for them but also anyone who might come across it later on—your organization would likely be required by law to keep such details private so only those involved with treating them could access them safely.
Information about data protection in India provides some details about its GDPR elements.
Data Protection Act in India
The Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 defines the term ‘personal information’ as follows:
any information that can be used to identify a person, and which is recorded in any form or medium; or
any information which relates to an individual and is specified by law to be required to be maintained by an agency or body.
Conclusion
It is recommended that you must keep the data protection in mind while using the various internet resources. You need to be careful about what you are sharing on the internet, especially with public social media websites like facebook, twitter and instagram etc . The proposed Data Protection Act should provide a more secure ecosystem for users to use these services without fear of being affected by hackers or criminals.

Hasina flees Bangladesh bleeds. What awaits Delhi? Top takeaways
A man proudly climbs atop the statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – Bangabandhu, the founding father of Bangladesh and urinates on his head. While others bring down his statue with bricks and bats. Museums were ransacked and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence ‘Ganabhaban’ was stormed. Protesters walked out with conquests – stolen furniture, her saree and inner garments. These were visuals from a Bangladesh that fell into the lap of anarchy after months of protests peaked to end Hasina’s 15-year rule and forced her to abruptly fly out of Dhaka. One of India’s friendly neighbours, Bangladesh shares a long history with the country and finds common ground in language, culture and cuisine with West Bengal across the border. Now its future is uncertain. Sheikh Hasina recently visited India to attend PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony and had acknowledged Dhaka’s good ties with Delhi when she became the Prime Minister for the fourth time in January this year after her party, the Awami League, won the general elections boycotted by much of the opposition over allegations of rigging. As the bloody crisis continues to swell, it’s pertinent to understand Delhi’s approach to the developments. BANGLADESH NEW REGIME DOES NOT WANT CONFRONTATION WITH INDIA What’s getting many anxious is the anticipation that the new government after Hasina might be anti-India or anti-Hindu. Even as Hasina faced allegations of widespread corruption, she could, to a large extent, control the communal elements. With her gone, the thought of an extremist regime got many worried. But Dhaka has assured that attacks on Hindus will be controlled and, as per a report today, such instances have been broadly controlled. Bangladesh is volatile, but the army is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs in India. EAM Jaishankar also assured in Parliament that the Indian government is in touch with the Bangladesh Army in light of the recent developments. BANGLADESH STILL NEEDS ECONOMIC AID AND SUPPORT FROM INDIA Even as anti-India protests erupted in Dhaka months before and is still a dominant sentiment across the protest-engulfed country, Dhaka still needs economic aid and support from Delhi, which makes it clear that it can’t afford to have an anti-India stance at this point. Further, India has also not given shelter to Hasina to not upset the Army-backed caretaker government – a move that does not isolate Delhi from the rest of Southeast Asia and does not give advantage to China. DELHI ON WAIT-AND-WATCH MODE The movement that forced Hasina to step down also allegedly had the backing of Pakistan’s ISI and Jamat as claimed by experts, and what gave wind to it was the discontentment among the people over quota and employment. External forces which allegedly are at play could have their eyes on the stability around India. But India is on wait-and-watch mode and a top-level meeting on the crisis has also been chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. CENTRE IN TOUCH WITH BENGAL GOVERNMENT OVER INFILTRATION FEARS Bengal-Bangladesh border was a matter of concern as many feared large-scale infiltration amid the communal undertones that run through Dhaka’s volatile nerves. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for peace and requested not to communalise the crisis as she assured that the state government would work according to the instructions of the Centre. However, the closing of the Petropol border has affected daily trade. Moreover, this is not a TMC Vs BJP battle, but a pivotal development that concerns India with the potential of reshaping geopolitics surrounding the subcontinent. Tinder Date Gone Wrong: Man Scammed To Pay ₹ 1.2 Lakh Bill At Delhi Cafe
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi fielded three key questions to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during the all-party meeting on the situation in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina's ouster as Prime Minister amid violent protests.
Tumblr media
Mr Gandhi asked what is the government's short-term and long-term strategy in dealing with diplomatic ramifications of the power shift in Dhaka, sources have said. The minister replied that it is a developing situation and the Centre is analysing it closely so that it can fine-tune its next move.
The Congress leader also asked if there could be an involvement of foreign powers, specifically Pakistan, in the dramatic developments in Dhaka over the past few weeks that culminated in Hasina's ouster, the sources said. The Centre replied that it is investigating this angle. A source also pointed out that the government had said that a Pakistan diplomat had been constantly changing his social media display picture to reflect the situation in Bangladesh amid violent protests. The Centre said is probing if this points to anything bigger.
He also asked if New Delhi had foreseen the dramatic turn of events in Bangladesh. To this, the External Affairs Minister replied that India is monitoring the situation.
Congress and the other Opposition parties have pledged their full support to the Narendra Modi government in its handling of the neighbourhood crisis.
Following the meeting, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar put out a post on X, appreciating the Opposition's unanimous support. "Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended," he wrote.
At the meeting, also attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Centre told MPs from all parties about the background to the crisis in Bangladesh and how it reached this point. They were also briefed about the situation there and how Ms Hasina escaped to India as her residence was stormed by protesters.
Ms Hasina is still in India and is likely to fly to the UK for political asylum. The Centre also told the all-party meet how it plans to respond to Ms Hasina, known to be New Delhi's old friend. Sources said New Delhi wants to give her time to decide her next course of action.
The government also told the meeting that it is in touch with Bangladesh Army, which has announced the formation of an interim government. The government told the Opposition parties that it is watching the developments closely and will take appropriate action at the right time.
There are about 20,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh and about 8,000 have returned. The government is in touch with them and the high commission is functioning. The Centre, sources said, is also tracking reports of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.
Speaking to NDTV after the meeting, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said that India's primary concern is the safety of Indian nationals in Bangladesh and the situation at the borders. Asked if the Opposition is satisfied with the way the government is handling the situation, he said, "The fact that the External Affairs Minister briefed all party leaders is a very welcome step. And we are with the government as far as national security is concerned."

Double Decker Corridor Hyderabad: Project Details, Benefits, and Cost
Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri A. Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for the construction of the 5.320 km Double Decker corridor at a cost of Rs.1,580 crores near Kandlakoya Junction. The new road corridor will end the decades-long hardships faced by motorists on the National Highway (NH)-44. Metro Rail line will also be built on this elevated corridor in the next phase.
Medchal-Malkazigiri, Medak, Kamareddy, Nirmal and Adilabad and twin City dwellers and people traveling on NH 44 are struggling due to increasing vehicular traffic every day. Restrictions in Containment areas created hurdles for road widening in Secunderabad and the Elevated Corridor.
Revanth Reddy focused on the Double decker corridor development and appealed to the union government to transfer the Defence lands to the state government and grant permission for the construction of the elevated corridor. Revanth Reddy, who was also the standing member of the Defence Ministry in the Parliament, always raised the issue of pending corridor projects and addressed the traffic woes.
Soon after assuming the CM office, Revanth Reddy paid special focus to the issue. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi on January 5 this year and requested to hand over the Defence land for the expansion of roads in the cantonment area in Hyderabad and also give permission for the construction of an elevated corridor. The Defence wing responded positively and sent a letter to the state government on March 1 agreeing to the construction of elevated corridors. The state government immediately initiated the construction of elevated corridors.

The elevated corridor will be developed on a 4.650 km stretch. The length of the underground tunnel will be 0.600 km. A total number of 131 Piers (pillars). The elevated corridor will be constructed in six lanes. Ramps will be constructed at two places near Boinapally Junction (at 0.248 km) and (at 0.475 km) to facilitate movement of traffic on the elevated corridor.
After the completion of corridor works, the metro rail line will be taken up on the elevated corridor. The new facility will provide safer, faster and more comfortable journeys for the travelers.
Key Details and Challenges
Traffic Density and Issues: Paradise Junction witnesses an average of 1,57,105 vehicles per day (passenger car unit per day - PCU), while ORR Junction handles 72,687 vehicles daily. The high density of vehicles on narrow roads leads to frequent traffic jams, stressing commuters and increasing fuel consumption.
Safety Concerns: The congested roads pose significant safety risks, with frequent road accidents leading to loss of lives. The elevated corridor aims to mitigate these risks by providing segregated lanes for smoother and safer traffic flow.
Impact on Commuters: Commuters face delays in reaching their destinations due to traffic congestion, impacting productivity and quality of life. The elevated corridor will significantly reduce travel times, easing commuter stress and improving overall travel experience.

Benefits of the Elevated Corridor Project in Hyderabad
The Elevated Corridor Project in Hyderabad is poised to bring about substantial benefits to the region, addressing critical transportation challenges and enhancing overall connectivity. Here are the major benefits of the project:
1. Ease Traffic Problems on NH-44
The primary objective of the Elevated Corridor Project is to ease traffic congestion on NH-44, particularly between Secunderabad and Adilabad districts. This corridor will provide a dedicated route for commuters and cargo, alleviating the strain on existing road networks and reducing travel time significantly.
2. Reduce Fuel Consumption
By providing congestion-free travel along the elevated corridor, the project aims to reduce fuel consumption for vehicles. Traffic jams often lead to idling and inefficient fuel usage. With smoother traffic flow, motorists will experience improved fuel efficiency, contributing to cost savings and environmental benefits through reduced emissions.
3. Seamless Connectivity to ORR
The elevated corridor will offer uninterrupted connectivity from the city to Outer Ring Road (ORR). This direct access will enable commuters and freight transporters to bypass city traffic, ensuring faster and more efficient travel between key districts such as Medchal-Malkajgiri, Medak, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Nirmal, and Adilabad.

Major Benefits
The development plan for Genome Valley and surrounding areas, facilitated by the construction of elevated corridors, is set to enhance both intra-state and inter-state connectivity. This initiative will notably benefit districts like Karimnagar and Mancherial within Telangana, as well as cities such as Nagpur in Maharashtra. Beyond transportation improvements, the project aims to catalyze comprehensive development across residential, educational, commercial, recreational, and hospitality sectors. Notably, the designation of a 25-kilometer radius as a "Pollution Free Zone" positions Genome Valley as an ideal location for a healthy and high-quality lifestyle.
In March, the Ministry of Defence granted approval for the construction of elevated corridors over defence territory in Hyderabad, marking a significant milestone in transportation infrastructure development. This approval followed eight years of negotiations and requests, underscoring its importance for enhancing connectivity in Genome Valley's suburbs: Turakapally, Shamirpet, Medchal, Uppal, Patancheru, Jeedimetla, Gachibowli, and Keesara. These corridors are expected to facilitate faster travel along critical routes like the Hyderabad-Nagpur National Highway and the Hyderabad-Karimnagar Rajiv Highway.
The approved project comprises two major corridors strategically designed to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow. Corridor 1 spans 18.30 kilometers from Paradise Junction near Kandlakoya to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) on Nagpur Highway (NH-44). This segment includes a 12.68 km stretch of six-lane elevated corridor with multiple exits and entries at crucial junctions. Future-proofing plans include provisions for a double-decker corridor to accommodate metro extensions. Meanwhile, Corridor 2 will span 11.30 kilometers as a six-lane elevated stretch, further enhancing transportation efficiency in the region.

Israel-Hamas truce LIVE updates | 11 more Israeli hostages released early Tuesday
In the fourth swap under the original four-day truce, 11 Israeli hostages, all women and children, were released from Hamas captivity Monday night in the Gaza Strip. Early Tuesday, 33 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons were freed and driven to the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.
Tumblr media
Of the roughly 240 hostages captured by Hamas in its October 7 attack in southern Israel that ignited the war, 62 have been released, one was freed by Israeli forces and two were found dead inside Gaza.
Relatives and a friend of Israelis kidnapped and killed by Hamas visited Australia’s Parliament House on Tuesday, sharing personal stories in an effort to lobby for international support for all hostages to be freed — and to support Israel’s war effort.
The group of five will meet political leaders during a two-day visit in Canberra. They are also expected to share their experiences with members of the community in Sydney and Melbourne during a weeklong Australian trip.
Israeli commander Doron Gavish explained the workings of the Iron Dome system as part of a multi-layered defence system that has helped Israel intercept thousands of rockets from multiple targets.
Former Commander of the Aerial Defense Array Brigadier General (res.) Doron Gavish said that the system also helped Israel in minimising the civilian casualties amid attacks.
In a video posted by TPS - Israel’s News Agency, Gavish said, “Iron Dome is part of a multi-layered defence system, developed here during the last 10-15 years. The role of this formation is to defend against threats that arrive at short ranges, whether it is from the direction of Hezbollah or whether it is from the direction of Gaza”.
Over the past weeks, India has expressed itself in statements, joint statements, and votes at the United Nations on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, that saw a temporary pause for the exchange of hostages which began on Friday, November 24. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted two separate virtual summits, the concluding session of India’s G-20 and the second edition of the ‘Voice of Global South’ Summit, and spoke about the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, as well as the importance of heeding the concerns of the developing world. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar travelled to the U.K. for talks, held along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh “2+2” dialogues with their counterparts from the U.S. and Australia where joint statements reflected the West’s position much more.
Many Gazans were hostile to Hamas ahead of the group’s brutal October 7 attack on Israel, with some describing its rule as a second occupation, according to rare polling data analyzed by a US-Palestinian researcher.
The findings are striking against a backdrop of protests and counter-protests triggered by the attack, with the relationship between Hamas and ordinary Gazans often the subject of heated debate.
“We find in our surveys that 67 percent of Palestinians in Gaza had little or no trust in Hamas in that period right before the attacks,” said Amaney Jamal, dean of Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.

The opposition ran away from it, we did not," Smriti Irani as Rahul Gandhi leaves Parliament during the debate on Manipur
Wednesday was an eventful day at the Parliament as Rahul Gandhi reinstated his status as MP. His statement on the no-confidence motion against the NDA government was countered by Union minister Smriti Irani claiming that it was equal to talking about the 'death of Mother India'.
With Rahul stating that his “mother” has been killed in Manipur and that the NDA government has done no good by bifurcating the state, Smriti Irani responded by saying, "You are not India because India is not corrupt. India believes in merit not in dynasty and today of all the days people like you need to remember what was told to the British - Quit India. Corruption Quit India, Dynasty Quit India. Merit now finds place in India..."
She referred to the 1984 riots, the Emergency, and the killing of Girija Tickoo as she asserted the history of Congress in blood-soaked. "This is the history of the Congress, soaked in blood."
“A Kashmiri Pandit named Girija Tickoo was gang-raped and brutally murdered in Kashmir. When this was shown in a movie, some Congress leaders called it propaganda. The same party leaders are talking about Manipur today,” Smriti Irani said.
"...It was mentioned in the House today that he (Rahul Gandhi) undertook a Yatra and gave assurance that they will reinstate Article 370 if it is up to them...I would like to tell the person who has run away from the House that neither will Article 370 be reinstated in the country nor will those who threaten Kashmiri Pandits with "Ralib Galib Chalib (convert, die or leave)" be spared," Smriti Irani said.
The heated argument continued and at the middle of Irani’s statement, Rahul Gandhi left the Parliament. "Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah & Defence Minister Rajnath Singh repeatedly said that the government is ready to debate on the Manipur issue. The opposition ran away from it, we did not," Smriti Irani said.

PM Modi will reply on no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha today
Tumblr media
In an announcement on Wednesday, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will grace the Parliament with his presence on August 10th. During this session, PM Modi will address the no-confidence motion brought forth by the opposition against the NDA government. Notably, the opposition had presented a no-confidence motion concerning the Manipur violence issue on July 26th.
Tumblr media
PM Narendra Modi While addressing the Parliament yesterday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised a pertinent question, questioning why the Prime Minister had not visited Manipur yet. Amidst strong opposition, he stated, "The Prime Minister hasn't visited Manipur because they (BJP) don't consider it a part of India. You have divided Manipur." This marks the second instance where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing a no-confidence motion. The first instance was in 2018, when a similar proposal was introduced against the Modi government's decision to grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh, which was ultimately defeated. As the monsoon session of Parliament continues, it witnesses intensified political turmoil. The past two days have seen heated debates within the Parliament, with the opposition accusing the government of causing significant divisions in Manipur. Meanwhile, the government has primarily focused on defending its welfare initiatives. The nation keenly awaits Prime Minister Modi's response to the no-confidence motion, as it has the potential to set the tone for the upcoming political discourse and governance trajectory. As the session unfolds, both supporters and critics of the government remain vigilant, eager to witness the outcome of this pivotal moment in Indian politics. Read the full article

Rahul Gandhi's Pak Question At Meeting On Bangladesh, S Jaishankar's Reply
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi fielded three key questions to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during the all-party meeting on the situation in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina's ouster as Prime Minister amid violent protests.
