Embrace Change, Continue To Evolve As Technology Redefines Workplace; Deloitte India’s Rakesh Barik
Mr. Barik, Partner & Leader for Technology at Deloitte India was addressing the 13th National HR Konclave of KIIT School of Management (KSOM)
Senior Deloitte India executive Rakesh Barik on Saturday exhorted the management students of KIIT School of Management (KSOM) to focus on skill upgradation on a sustained basis as technology has penetrated into every aspect of the corporate world, making jobs and workplace evolving at a faster scale.
Tumblr media
Addressing the 13th National HR Konclave, Rakesh Barik, partner, leader for technology at Deloitte India said that the main challenge before him these days is to make his team “future proof and future-ready”. The theme of the Konclave was ‘The Re-skilling Revolution: The Vector of Transformation”.
“Technology is pervasive today -- every company is a digital company, digital workplace. The way we deliver our work has significantly evolved that is agile and co-creation,” he said, emphasizing making life-long learning the new mantra. “Embrace change, foster skill-based organization and continue to evolve,” he added.
The digital workplace, he said, is continuing to reboot at a faster pace and change is the only constant now. Besides, living in a connected world is transforming the way we engage – be it social or mobile convergence. A global, diverse new age at work has different and changing priorities and aspirations. The mantra, therefore, is creating a skill-based organization to facilitate a focus on skill building to navigate the future. It is imperative to institutionalize it within the foundations of the organizations, Mr. Barik underlined.
He said that human Resource executives can play a more influential role in global organisations than they have in the past by targeting key focus areas and ensuring employees are skilled to navigate the changing landscape. Director of KSOM Dr. S K Mahapatra said the Konclave provides critical exposure to the students to upskill their knowledge through thoughtful and productive engagement with the captains of the industry and learn from their perspectives about the evolving corporate sector.
KIIT Pro Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr.) Saranjit Singh asked the students to strive towards re-skilling themselves to meet the upcoming challenges of the corporate world. Dean of KSOM Sumita Mishra proposed a vote of thanks.

3 Idiots (2009)
Comedy, Drama |
3 Idiots is a Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film follows the friendship of three students at an Indian engineering college and is a satire about the social pressures under an Indian education system. The film is narrated through parallel dramas, one in the present and the other ten years in the past.
Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra under the banner Vinod Chopra Films, and based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone: What not to do at IIT! for which author was not suitably credited, the film incorporated real Indian inventions created by Remya Jose, Mohammad Idris, Jahangir Painter and Sonam Wangchuk.
Past
In 1999, Farhan Qureshi arrives at the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) in Delhi, where he is immediately introduced to its cutthroat academic culture and the hazing practices among its seniors. He and his roommate, the devoutly religious Raju Rastogi, meet newcomer Ranchhoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad, nicknamed “Rancho”, in the middle of a hazing ritual. Rancho quickly proves his prowess as an engineer by devising a trap to injure the head senior; Farhan and Raju soon realize that Rancho is to be their other roommate…
Present
Ten years later, Farhan has sustained his photography career, while Raju is married and has found success as a business executive. Farhan and Raju receive a call from Chatur saying he knows where Rancho is; the three of them reunite on the ICE terrace, where Chatur brags about having become a wealthy executive at an American corporation, per his vow to Rancho that he would ultimately become more successful. Chatur informs them that Rancho now resides in Shimla, and the three of them set off on a road trip to find their long-lost friend…

Genetics could help diagnose type-1 diabetes in Indians: study reveals
Tumblr media
By India Science Wire
New Delhi, June 12: Researchers at the KEM Hospital and Research Centre, Pune; CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad; and the University of Exeter in the UK have found that a genetic risk score is effective in diagnosing type-1 diabetes in Indians. The outcome of their research has been published in Scientific Reports.
Now, what is this genetic risk score? Developed by the University of Exeter, the genetic risk score takes into account detailed genetic information that are known to increase the chance of developing type-1 diabetes. The score may be used at the time of diabetes diagnosis to help decide if someone has type-1 diabetes.
Will the European genetic risk score be effective in diagnosing type-1 diabetes in Indians? This was the question that naturally arises as the bulk of the research in this field has been conducted in European populations. To answer this question, the research team studied people with diabetes from Pune, India, using the genetic risk score. The team analyzed 262 people with type-1 diabetes, 352 people with type-2 diabetes, and 334 people without diabetes. All were of Indian (Indo-European) ancestry. The research outcomes compared well with those in Europeans as revealed in the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium Study.
It is widely believed that only children and adolescents get type-1 diabetes and obese and older (typically after 45 years of age) get type-2 diabetes. However, recent findings have shown that type-1 diabetes can occur later in life, while type-2 diabetes is on the rise among younger and thinner Indians. Distinguishing the two types of diabetes, has, therefore, become more complex. The two types follow different treatment regimes with type-1 diabetes needing lifelong insulin injections but type-2 diabetes often being managed with diet or tablet treatment. Misclassification of the type of diabetes may lead to sub-standard diabetes care and possible complications. In this context, this particular study gains importance as it helps in diagnosing diabetes from its type-1 and type 2 variants correctly.
Although based on European data, the researchers found that the test is effective in diagnosing the right type of diabetes in Indians, even in its current form. They have also found genetic differences between the populations, indicating that the test could be further improved to enhance outcomes for Indian populations.
“Diagnosing the right diabetes type is an increasingly difficult challenge for clinicians, as we now know that type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. This task is even harder in India, as more cases of type 2 diabetes occur in people with low BMI. We now know that our genetic risk score is an effective tool for Indians, and can help get people on the treatment they need to avoid life-threatening complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis and to achieve the best health outcomes”, said Dr. Richard Oram, of the University of Exeter Medical School.
Dr. Chittaranjan Yajnik of the KEM Hospital and Research Centre, Pune agrees with Dr. Oram. He said that the escalating epidemic of diabetes in young Indians makes it imperative that we diagnose the type of diabetes correctly to avoid mistreatment and its long-term biological, social, and economic implications. The new genetic tool will be a great help in this. It will help decide the contribution of failing pancreatic B-cells against reduced action of insulin due to excess fat and smaller muscle mass in the body of Indians (‘thin-fat Indians’).
He further said, “We look forward to using this test in diabetic patients from different parts of India where the physical characteristics of diabetic patients differ from the standard description”.
The authors also found and can be used to predict the onset of type 1 diabetes in Indians.
Referring to the finding that nine genetic areas (called the single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]) that correlated with type-1 diabetes in both Indian and European populations.
Dr. G R Chandak, Chief Scientist leading the study at CCMB, remarked: “It’s interesting to note that different SNPs are more abundant among Indian and European patients. This opens up the possibility that environmental factors might be interacting with these SNPs to cause the disease.”
Given the genetic diversity of the population of India, the study’s results need to be validated in other ethnic groups of the country too.
Dr. Rakesh K Mishra, Director of the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), said: “As more than 20 percent of people with type-1 diabetes below the age of 15 years of age are in India, developing a genetic test kit to reliably detect type-1 from type-2 diabetes holds a lot of significance for the country.”

Tiger Zinda Hai Review – Bollywood Hungama
The festive season and the year-end is around the corner and it’s usually a time when a big, event film hits the theatres. This year it’s the turn of Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer TIGER ZINDA HAI and it has a lot of factors going in its favour. Apart from being the sequel of the blockbuster EK THA TIGER [2012], the film boasts of an excellent star cast, slick, action-packed trailer and chartbuster music. So does the year end on a high with TIGER ZINDA HAI? Or does the film disappoint? Let’s analyse.
TIGER ZINDA HAI is the story of an Indian and Pakistani spy coming together for a greater cause. Tiger (Salman Khan) and Zoya (Katrina Kaif) escape from the clutches of ISI and RAW and then they start living an idyllic life somewhere in the snow-covered ranges of Europe. Meanwhile in Ikrit, Iraq, Abu Usman (Sajjad Delafrooz) emerges as the head of ISC which turns into the world’s richest and the most dangerous terrorist organization. The Americans are angry and they launch an attack on Abu and his convoy, and it injures Abu. At the same time, a group of 40 nurses – 25 Indian and 15 Pakistani – are heading to the hospital where they work. Abu’s men force the nurses to take an injured Abu with them for immediate treatment. They also take over the hospital and keep the nurses as hostage. The Americans then decide to launch an airstrike on the hospital within 7 days. Hence, the Indians have just a week to rescue the nurses. Infiltrating into the high security ISC region is next to impossible. The senior officer of RAW, Shenoy (Girish Karnad) suggests that Tiger should be called in as he’s the only one who can successfully complete this mission. Tiger is found and he takes up the job. How Tiger manages to infiltrate the ISC area and rescue the nurses forms the rest of the film.
TIGER ZINDA HAI begins on an engaging note with the sequence of James Forward (Tyler Gowardhan). It very well establishes the terror unleashed by Abu Usman. Tiger’s entry as expected is clapworthy and will be greeted with seetis and taalis. The entire wolf sequence is akin to international standards and it truly makes you feel that Hindi cinema has indeed come of age. An unexpected bit in the film is of the marital problems faced by Tiger and Zoya. Of course, the fun enhances once Tiger reaches Iraq and makes a plan to get to the hospital. The introduction of Firdaus (Paresh Rawal) adds to the fun. The market sequence before the intermission point is quite extended but also highly entertaining. The fun continues in the second half but the pace drops a bit here. Also, the film gets a bit unconvincing which could have been avoided. Tiger and his team didn’t seem that injured that they had to be rushed to the hospital – they could have been easily treated in the refinery itself. Perhaps the makers should have shown them extremely wounded maybe. Moreover, the manner in which Zoya and Firdous convince the Americans to side with them and also Zoya commanding the Americans is difficult to digest. The narrative gets scattered in the middle, however the film picks pace in the last 30 minutes. But thankfully, the positive outweigh the negatives easily. The climax is again quite lengthy but it’s brilliantly done and gives audiences their money’s worth.
Neelesh Misra and Ali Abbas Zafar’s story is a great blend of emotions, action, romance, humour and also patriotism. At the same time, it serves as a nice, organic sequel to EK THA TIGER and that’s definitely praiseworthy. Ali Abbas Zafar’s screenplay is highly engaging. Ali Abbas Zafar’s dialogues are simple but highly effective. The English dialogues are used at a lot of places but again, these are simple ones and the scenes are scripted and directed in such a way that even if one doesn’t understand English well or reads the subtitles, one can still comprehend what’s going on. Ali Abbas Zafar’s direction has a mass appeal and at the same time, he ensures that the film looks like a class product. He establishes the world and characters in no time and gets going with the story instantly. The romantic bit between Tiger and Zoya is also well depicted. One of the most interesting aspects is the entire India-Pakistan angle and it’s sure to leave audiences smiling and even in tears at some places. A very brilliant message of peace is given in this flick and that’s sure to be appreciated!
Talking of performances, Salman Khan delivers a terrific performance yet again. Salman is the lifeline, the real treasure of Tiger Zinda Hai. He sinks his teeth into the character and, in several sequences, peels off the mask of superstardom and brings the actor to the fore. At many places, he underplays his part which goes very well with his spy act. Also, his interaction with his family is a delight to watch. Salman disappointed audiences in TUBELIGHT but in TIGER ZINDA HAI, he compensates for it very well and audiences are sure to enjoy his performance. Katrina Kaif thankfully is not an arm candy. She has a very crucial part and even she gets to be a part of clapworthy action scenes! She looks like a million bucks in the song ‘Dil Diyan Gallan’ and also seems quite cool in the action avatar. Sajjad Delafrooz pitches in a remarkable performance and plays his villainous part very well. The film would not have been half as successful if he had given a shaky performance. His face, body language and poise give a clear message that he means business. Watch his confrontations with Salman – the good versus evil clash is truly brilliant. Paresh Rawal is terrific and he’s sure to be remembered for a long time for his performance. He also contributes to the laughter quotient. Angad Bedi (Navin) is fine and shows his worth in the climax scene. Kumud Mishra (Rakesh) essays an interesting character with élan. Paresh Pahuja (Azaan Akbar) leaves a mark despite lesser screen time. Child actors Jineet Rath (Hassan) and Sartaaj Kakkar (Junior) have important parts to play and do very well. Girish Karnad is as usual while Anant Vidhaat (Karan), who did a good job in SULTAN, gives a credible performance. Anupriya Goenkar (Poorna) gets the most scope among the nurses and she shines. The rest of the characters do a fine job.
Tiger Zinda Hai has several strengths: An engaging storyline as well as an enthralling screenplay that’s powered with clap-trap dialogue.
Vishal-Shekhar’s music is melodious and well woven into the script. ‘Dil Diyan Gallan’ is very sweet and endearing. ‘Tera Noor’ is the best picturized song of the film and it’s great that such a song is used in such a contrasting situation. ‘Swag Se Swagat’ is a chartbuster and played in the end credits. ‘Zinda Hai’ and ‘Daata Tu’ are missing from the film but no complaints! Julius Packiam’s background score is dramatic and exhilarating and raises the tempo of the film.
Marcin Laskawiec’s cinematography is captivating and gives the film an international feel. Rameshwar S Bhagat’s editing is simple and at places, slick. Tom Struthers’s action is not too gory and would be loved by the masses. Rajnish Hedao’s production design is very authentic. Same goes for YFX’s VFX (Yash Raj Films‘ VFX department) – it will serve as a benchmark for Indian films from now on! Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Ashley Rebello and Leepakshi Ellawadi’s costumes are also quite real and very well researched.
On the whole, TIGER ZINDA HAI is a high-octane masala entertainer that stays true to its genre and delivers what it promises: King-sized entertainment. At the box office, the audiences will give the film an epic ‘swagat’ as it is bound to entertain them thoroughly. This one is a SURE SHOT BLOCKBUSTER and nothing can stop it from setting new records. Get ready for the Tsunami at the Box Office.

GSK's bid in focus as Reckitt quits Pfizer consumer health auction
NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) – British consumer goods group Reckitt Benckiser Group (RB.L) has pulled out of discussions with Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) over buying its consumer healthcare business, strengthening the hand of British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L).

Reckitt dropped out of the sale process late on Wednesday, the day before the U.S. drug company was expecting binding offers for the unit. Sources familiar with the matter said GSK was working on an offer.
Reckitt said its proposal had only been for part of the Pfizer business, without giving further details. One person familiar with the matter said the company had been most interested in acquiring the painkiller Advil.
It is also possible that Pfizer will receive more offers by Thursday’s deadline for bids, the sources added. Alternatively, the U.S. pharmaceuticals company might decide against a sale.
Pfizer has been hoping to fetch as much as $20 billion for its consumer health business, which includes familiar over-the-counter brands such as Advil, Centrum multivitamins and Chapstick lip balm, according to the sources.
“An acquisition for the whole Pfizer consumer health business did not fit our acquisition criteria and an acquisition of part of the business was not possible,” Reckitt said.
Reckitt’s priority would remain organic growth and integration of $16.6 billion acquisition Mead Johnson Nutrition, the British company said in a statement.
Shares in Reckitt jumped 5 percent on Thursday on relief that the company would not be over-leveraging itself or considering a dilutive rights issue to fund an ambitious acquisition, while GSK slipped 1 percent.
But the decision not to pull the trigger on the Pfizer deal is a blow for Chief Executive Rakesh Kapoor, who has long coveted the Pfizer operation as a means to bolster Reckitt’s position in consumer health (CH).
“If indeed RB has opened the door for Pfizer CH to be acquired by GSK, it might end up significantly strengthening one of its main CH competitors,” said Bernstein analyst Andrew Wood.
DURABLE BRANDS
Although consumer remedies sold over the counter have lower margins than prescription drugs, they are typically very well known and durable brands with loyal customers.
Pfizer said it was reviewing the future of the consumer business following the Reckitt decision.
“Pfizer continues to evaluate potential strategic alternatives for the consumer healthcare business, which include a spin-off, sale or other transaction, and Pfizer ultimately retaining the business. We have not yet made a decision, but continue to expect to make one in 2018,” Pfizer said in a statement.
For GSK, a deal to buy the consumer business would be the boldest move to date for new CEO Emma Walmsley, who took over last April. It would further increase the company’s leading position in consumer health, an increasingly lucrative sector as aging populations and health-conscious consumers drive demand for self-medication.
GlaxoSmithKline has struggled with a scarcity of promising new drugs in its pipeline at a time of mounting competition in its core respiratory and HIV divisions.
Adding Pfizer’s consumer healthcare business would likely boost GlaxoSmithKline’s earnings, given the economies of scale the enlarged business would enjoy, but would also stretch GlaxoSmithKline’s finances, analysts have said.
GlaxoSmithKline runs its consumer healthcare business via a joint venture with Novartis AG (NOVN.S). Novartis has the right to sell down its minority stake starting from this month, although it has previously indicated it is in no rush to do so.
“You would expect us to take a serious look at any leading and very appealing assets in the sector because we are a world leader in consumer healthcare and have a very good track record of integrating businesses successfully,” GlaxoSmithKline’s Walmsley said last month.
“We will be extremely focused on discipline around returns and frankly, this is not a need to do.”
