Rebuilding My Web

I'm finally biting the bullet and rebuilding all my websites in @rapidweaver. I used Apple's iWeb until they stopped supporting it about a decade ago. After much agonizing, I went with Sandvox, which was similar but better on several counts. But now they're out of business.

Learning any new app takes time, this thread will be "notes to self" for the next site I build because things that take a week to figure out can often be explained in a minute or two, so hopefully others will find this thread useful.

A few things about my web presence: 1. I do as little coding as possible because I don't build sites for a living. My solution must have a WYSIWYG interface. 2. I have several sites, so any solution that charges by the site and month won't work for me.

The newest version of RapidWeaver does a great job with responsive web design on a range of devices, automatically serving up images scaled to those devices without me having to create all those image sizes for each one, like other web-building apps require. A huge timesaver.

I strongly considered Wordpress but the learning curve was just too steep to get the look & feel I wanted in a reasonable amount of time. But the Stacks on which Rapidweaver sites are built remind me a lot of the new Wordpress Gutenberg systems of blocks.

Wordpress is the world's #1 site builder & has a huge following so it should last a long time. But the Wordpress ecosystem is a notorious hacker target since it's so big. My RapidWeaver sites are built on my Mac and hosted by my webhost. And the RapidWeaver community is big.

To get started with @rapidweaver: 1. Buy the app at realmacsoftware.com. Stacks are the essential building blocks, which you can get from @YourHeadSupport. Next you'll need a robust framework of components. The two top candidates are Foundry & Foundation by @weaversspace.

I started with Foundry but then went to Foundation once I discovered they play well with Hoefler web fonts, which I've used for years. weavers.space has a bunch of other great stacks built on Foundation, and a robust user community.

I initially bought Font Pro with the intention of using it with Foundry, but couldn't get my web fonts working so decided to get Foundation to replace Foundry hoping they would play nice together, both being part of the weavers.space ecosystem.

I struggled for a couple more days getting my web fonts to work. Finally, I asked myself whether it might be because I hadn't published the site yet. To that point, I'd just been building the basics on my Mac. So I published. Nothing happened at first. But then I noticed this at the bottom of the Hoefler Font Family Setup box: "In order to preview your fonts, you must add "127.0.0.1" to your domain list in Hoefler (RW7 only)". I'm on RW8.7 but thought I'd give it a try. It worked! Not sure which fixed it, as I did one right after the other and it might have taken a minute for the publishing to trigger something in my Hoefler account, but I don't really care since it’s working now.

weavers.space developer @joeworkman has lots of tutorial videos which are really helpful but it took me awhile to realize he's developing stuff so fast that many of the videos are from previous versions. For example, he talks a lot about swatches but I couldn't find anything that said "swatch" in Site Styles, which is the nerve center of Foundation. That's because since the video was posted, swatches have matured into Font & Text, General, and Component swatches. Once I realized that, things got much easier.

I have Font & Text swatches for my text style, link style, and heading styles from h1 to h6. I have General swatches for background colors and for margins. You can use swatches as a "class," which you can apply to almost any stack on a page by tagging it with the class name.

You can also apply swatches to a long list of stack types. Doing this means you don't need to tag them with the class, but it affects all such objects on the page. As a result, I do mostly class swatches. I have two Component swatches: Top Bar Styles & Menu Styles.

Speaking of Top Bar & Menus, I'm rebuilding all my sites with a black background (more on that later). Some devices are small enough that the menu wraps to more than one line, and the leftover space was a light grey, which looks bad.

I worked for a couple days trying dozens of options before figuring out a hack. At the top of Site Styles, there are Component Colors and Text Colors. The latter is easy, but I don't know what the Component Colors do because they haven't shown up on anything I'm doing yet.

Exasperated, I did a screen shot of the grey leftover wrapped menu area and drug it around the screen, trying to see if it matched anything. One color is called light grey & looked like a perfect match. I changed it to black, and that solved the problem.

Knowing all that stuff now, I can probably set up my next site in a few minutes instead of a couple weeks. Hope this helps someone else. In any case, the rest of this thread will be about my new site design system.

I'm doing black background design for several reasons. In 1984, Macs brought computers out of the DOS black-screen world into the light of black letters on a white background, like real life. But now black-screen design is cool, including on apple.com.

Black-screen design also uses less energy, which might not be much on one computer, but is a big deal on many. And since http://originalgreen.org is about green building and living, it makes good sense. Plus, I use a lot of black in other places as well, so it's consistent.

I started studying the best new sites in late November, and noticed several things: With responsive design being essential today so you don't get dinged by the search engines, designs with many small pics are out, as is clutter, including the page-top banner.

The top of my page has a simple SVG (scalable vector graphic) logo on the left and a menu bar on the right. Below that is a big, beautiful image. I save a 4K (3840 x 2160) version of my best work for presentations & a 1920 x 1080 for tweets and other social media posts. The great thing about RapidWeaver is that I can use the 4K version of my images and RW will automatically serve up the right sizes to each device, including Retina devices. And by using 4K versions, they'll still be good when sites get to 3840 pixels wide (mine are 1280 now).

Below the title image is my page title and text. @joeworkman has moved Foundation to markdown text, which I've never worked with before. I really like it because you can switch between text & header styles with just basic keystrokes all in the same text box using no HTML.

On long blog posts, I'll definitely intersperse images with text throughout the post as I've always done, but those images will all be full-width cinema-proportion 16:9 images so they're big and beautiful.

Something else I noticed about the best new design is that sidebars are mostly out today. The best sites take the clutter that would have been in a sidebar and put it in a box at the bottom of the page, so the user experience is just beautiful images & text.

My footer box includes a Google site search bar, links to where you can buy my book, email links on speaking & ideas to write about, a subscribe box, social share buttons & follow buttons, a Facebook Comments box on most pages & a sitemap of the 1st & 2nd tier tabs.

originalgreen.org has hundreds of pages, and the Facebook Comments box requires the URL of the page it's on. I'm building the new site at dev.originalgreen.org but when the site goes live, I'll have to fix the comments box on every page.

Also, all the inter-site links I'm building right now will have to be re-done once the site goes live. So I have a radical thought: I don't currently sell anything direct from any of my sites, so I'm wondering about just building the new site on originalgreen.org.

Another great thing about RapidWeaver is that I can make URLs pretty much whatever I want, including the identical URL of the old page. So there's no need for redirects, which are a huge task on a big site.

Building a site live at the permanent URL means that if someone comes to a new part of the site, they'll only see the part that's currently built, but if they have a link to an old page, then they can still see it right up until the day the page is rebuilt.

Does anyone know why this strategy wouldn't work? I feel like I'm standing at a point of no return on this. What am I missing? Develop on dev.originalgreen.org or right on originalgreen.org? All thoughts appreciated; if I'm gonna do this, I need to start now.

We are making use of CSS Flexbox in this theme version for the main page layout. CSS Flexbox is supported in all newer web browsers and gives you increased control over the placement and positioning of elements. For example, it lets you swap the sidebar positioning on desktop and mobile, without having to edit the physical structure of the webpage to reorder elements. It also intelligently resizes and reflows containers on the page more elegantly. Older browsers without Flexbox support will simply 'stack' the page elements vertically.

The navigation style has been changed to a simple block navigation layout, without toggle / collapse animation (for both mobile and desktop). Overwhelming feedback from users was that many felt the previous hover-to-expand menu was just way too complicated for average website users to grasp the hang of, and it made site navigation very tedious. Most people build smaller / shallower websites with XXL, so the new navigation style should prove a lot easier and more future-proof going forward. Subpages are only reveals when you click to view a parent page.

This theme, like many others in our line-up, is now GDPR compliant. It has no links or calls to external websites or services.

A happy summer bank holiday weekend to you all! Or just a regular weekend, wherever you may be. Those of you who are members of my Discord chat room or have been in communication with me via email may know that I have been very busy working on another sizable update to the MiniCookie stack.

This update actually started around Easter, before version 2.2.0 was released in June. This latest update focuses on adding a couple of user-requested features, fixing a couple of minor quirks and boosting the feature set to see-off the copycat rivalry!

This update has been many hours of coding and testing. I hope it’s everything you want. The full list of changes are as follows:

Further improvements to the display of consent and multi-consent popups in RapidWeaver edit mode.

Added a new checkbox option to omit MiniCookie from display on printouts or when you save a webpage as PDF.

Added some clever options to allow certain tracking cookies to auto-renew. For example, if someone dismisses a consent popup with an expiry of 7 days, then comes back to your website after 5 days, we can automatically reset the expiry date for another 7 days out into the future.

Added some information to forewarn that some web browsers (namely Safari 15) now cap cookie expiry dates to a maximum of 7 days.

Only display the 'placement' setting for supplementary links, when the configuration is set to 'get user consent (default)'.

New CSS loading animation effects for the consent popups.

Added the option to change the popup position to 'modal' which displays a popup in the dead-centre of the screen.

Fixes a problem whereby checkboxes might be out of alignment with labels, when using the "Source" theme framework.

Fixes a problem of the consent popup shadow rendering too hard in Microsoft Edge, specifically on Surface tablets.

Fixes an issue in some Brandon Lee themes of scrollbars appearing within consent popups. Possibly already fixed by Brandon Lee before this update was published?

Addresses a possible issue whereby the JS Cookie Plugin might conflict with themes or stacks using an older version of the same plugin.

Changes to some of the informational tooltips, to make things easier to understand.

Consent popups and multi-consent popups now support ARIA roles, titles and descriptions. Excellent for improved website accessibility.

A couple of other minor changes to the underlying source code, particularly towards compatibility of future PHP versions.

A few years back Apple made the dubious decision to remove iWeb from it’s iLife suite of creativity programs. iWeb itself wasn’t that great when it came to producing websites, but it was incredibly easy to use and the removal outraged many amateurs who wanted to create their own website or blog.

RapidWeaver 5 from RealMac Software seeks to bridge the gap that has been left by the removal of iWeb, by providing an easy to use platform for Mac users. That being said, when you actually dig down in to it it’s a much more powerful tool than iWeb ever was.

Creating a site

RapidWeaver makes it incredibly easy to start planning your site. All you need to have in your head is a basic idea of the layout of your site, and RapidWeaver will help you make it a reality, quickly.

When you first launch the software you’re presented with a splash window that gives you the option to pick up on an existing project, start a new one, browse the library of add-ons (more on that later) and view online instructional videos.

On selecting the “Create a new Project…” option, you’ll be presented with the main design and preview window, which allows you to plan the layout of your site, as well as produce the content that will fill each page. Although it didn’t have a couple of bugs for me, the publishing side of RapidWeaver works very well (in theory, anyway). If you make a change to a site that you’ve already published, you won’t need to re-upload the whole thing. RapidWeaver will check which pages and files have been amended and then only send those files to your website via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This could be of great benefit as your site grows, especially if you only have a modest Internet connection.

Tutoring

RealMac Software have gone to great lengths to provide written and video tutorials for RapidWeaver on their website. In order to access the “Beginners” guides, all you have to do is sigh up for a free account. The videos cover basic things, such as how to add content and change themes, to more advanced things like text and image formatting and publishing.

However, in order to access the “Intermediate” and “Advanced” videos, you’ll need to sign up for a support subscription at $9.95 a month. The videos themselves cover some great topics such as theme editing, advanced gallery and blog functions and reducing the file size of your project. However, I have a real problem with this type of support model. In my view, if you buy a product you should receive a decent set of instructions on how to use all of its features, for free. To charge people an additional subscription fee in order to be able to use their software to the fullest seems a little bit like you’re squeezing them dry.

For the purposes of this review, I’ve not bothered to pay for a subscription, so I can’t comment on the videos themselves, but if it helps there are quite a few instructional videos on YouTube from other RapidWeaver users.

Plugins and Add-ons

Although RapidWeaver comes with 47 themes built in, you’ll probably find yourself struggling to make your site original within a short while. Not only that, but the limitations when it comes to layout and choice of content mean that you might not be able to include everything in your site that you might want.

Thankfully, RealMac Software have allowed 3rd party developers to produce add-ons for RapidWeaver that can extend its functionality and allow you to add more content to your website. That being said, the online catalogue does list some add-ons that would potentially be very useful. There are several that would add excellent catalogue and e-commerce support to your site, plus several that promise to add additional functionality when it comes to designing your site.

In truth, I don’t like this business model at all, I would much rather spend more on a package which includes all of these features right out of the box, rather than buy a relatively cheap product and then have to buy add ons in order to make it do the things that I want.

More adventurous or experienced users may find that they outgrow RapidWeaver’s basic functions quite quickly, in which case there’s the add-on and theme libraries on Realmac’s website. However, professionals (budding or experienced) should avoid RapidWeaver, it simply doesn’t allow for the level of customisation and originality that your clients will expect.

Introducing SuperBox 5

A clever image stack, which you can use for the creation of search engine styled image galleries. Clicking on thumbnail images reveals a larger version of the image. It's like a lightbox, but not quite a lightbox!

What's good about SuperBox is that it keeps focus on the webpage. Navigation through an image gallery becomes an altogether faster and more enjoyable experience.

SuperBox has been around as a stack for a number of years. The original developer was Adam Merrifield of SeyDoggy. This latest version introduces some excellent new functionality that elevates the capabilities of SuperBox even further. Have a read below of what’s new!

Caption Support

This has long been a frequent request. This version of SuperBox finally introduces support for written captions. Plus there is a separate HTML box, where you can include optional code for each image, such as custom links, download buttons, lightbox triggers, PayPal, Stripe or FotoMoto purchase buttons.

Expertly built

SuperBox uses a mixture of modern web technologies, including CSS flexbox, transitional effects, proportionate sizing and responsive behaviour. The end result is a robust and highly flexible stack, which adapts intelligently to fit your content. The subtle animation effects add a professional finishing touch.

Image links

You can now apply optional links to the full size image, to make them clickable. Not only that, but you can also apply custom attributes to these links; for those instances where you need to 'attach' extra code; like lightbox triggers, custom callbacks or analytical campaign tracking.

Improved thumbnail grid controls

By request, it is now possible to control how many thumbnail columns are displayed on mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop screen widths. Choose between one and twelve columns in the stack settings. SuperBox does all the complicated code and calculations for you in the background.

Lazy loading

SuperBox includes the new HTML loading attribute, for web browsers that support it (currently Chrome and Firefox nightly). Meaning your images will have deferred loading until the image comes into view. The end result is a faster loading webpage. Expect to find native lazy loading support coming into many more web browsers this year.

More style options

The choice of style, colour and alignment options has increased significantly in this update. While we still inherit a lot of theme styling (like font faces) you have greater control over many other aspects of the SuperBox presentation. All colour pickers come in light and dark pairs, so you can adjust the colour of SuperBox depending on whether the user has their computer set to light or dark mode. Learn more about this here.

New navigation options

Keyboard navigation remains the same as before. Next, previous and close icons have received a minor design refresh. A select menu is provided so you can adjust the placement of the next / previous button. The Font Awesome Icons used can be changed in the stack settings, if required.

Active carets

The thumbnail image of the expanded image have the addition of a little caret icon. This gives better indication of what image the user is currently viewing. A nice little finishing touch. Carets are easily disabled with a checkbox option, if they are not required.

Sound effects

Not to everyone's liking admittedly! However another customer of SuperBox v5 (using the stack in a children's website) specifically sponsored this new feature. It is now possible to attach custom sound effects to the thumbnails, which play each time a thumbnail or navigation button is clicked.

Text-only panels

Sometimes you might be in a position of wanting to only display a thumbnail image and corresponding caption or HTML content (no full size image) in the expanded panel. The 'Text / HTML Only' sub-stack is perfect for this task. A full size image is not loaded, and your caption or HTML content is set to display the full width of the SuperBox panel.

Anchor points

Optional anchor points can be assigned to each SuperBox item. If a user lands on the page with a matching anchor appended to the URL (e.g. https://example.com/#cute-puppy) then the user is scrolled down to that point of the page and the target image opens within SuperBox.

Improved compatibility

SuperBox is now compatible with Foundation and other frameworks / themes. Various theme and web browser related bugs have been fixed in this update. All the messy Internet Explorer hacks are gone, so the code base of SuperBox is smaller, despite many more features being added.

Special Effects

Alongside the previous 'opacity' effect available, the choice of thumbnail image special effects has been expanded to include blur, brightness, contrast, hue, invert, monochrome, rotation, saturation, scale and sepia. The amount of each effect is customisable. Effects are applied via CSS, for minimal performance impacts.

SuperBox is certainly an image gallery stack worth taking a second look at. A great addition to websites and an innovative method of navigating any quantity of images. The addition of captions, links and optional HTML code make SuperBox a useful addition to the Stacks Library.

This stack would be particularly well suited for product showcases, a simple store front, photographic galleries, real estate listings, travel websites and so much more...

SuperBox v5 installs itself alongside older versions you may already have installed. It will leave existing SuperBox galleries in your website untouched.

RWML (RapidWeaver Multilingual) updated to version 2.1.0

This stack update is free for all users of RWML 2x. You can update via automatic updates in Stacks / RapidWeaver or download the latest version from your Paddle account. As always, please ensure all your RapidWeaver project files and addons are suitably backed-up before commencing the update. The main changes in this version include:

Newly revised user guide published on the website, explaining the full details of how RWML can be used and how to configure it. This includes some example RW project files you can download and open in RapidWeaver 7 and RapidWeaver 8 for better illustration of how the stacks work. Emphasis on reducing the amount of written content and cutting straight to the basics of what RWML can do and how it works.

New RWML Language Switcher stack, completely rewritten from the ground-up with support for many more switcher types to suit different webpage placements. Buttons, tabs, radio selects, checkboxes, select menus - it's got them all! Much emphasis has been placed on improving accessibility and providing more customisable style options for things like buttons. Of course, your ability to custom-build your own buttons or add links to a theme menu bar has still been retained.

A couple of very minor / insignificant changes ahead of Stacks 4. Mostly to help pages load / publish slightly faster in RapidWeaver 8.

If the selected language is not available, we now fallback to the default language. In other words, if a user enters a country code that has not been configured, the stacks will fallback to the default language and content will always be shown.

Fixes to the RWML Meta stack. If using a third-party SEO stack, we recommend using that inside a RWML Wrapper stack. And because the RWML Meta stack only uses Javascript to translate meta tags, you may find more success in following the subdivided methodology - if meta tags are particularly important to you for searching, SEO and social media etc.

RWML Redirect stacks no longer append the language query string onto the target page URL.

Renamed the RWML Master stack to RWML Base. This is simply to ensure it shows at the top of the Stacks library (RWML group) when you are searching for it. The renaming does not effect previously setup 'RWML Master' stacks. After installing the update, the 'RWML Master' stacks should effortlessly and seamlessly rename themselves to 'RWML Base'.

Fixed a bug whereby the presence of SSL and non-SSL websites at the same domain could confuse RWML and cause an incorrect 'alternate' URL to be written into the head section of the webpage. The option has also been added in the RWML Base stack to disable the generation of 'alternate' tags, which some users prefer if they want to make their own.

If you are still using RWML 1x, you really, really should consider upgrading to RWML 2. Version 2 has now been available for nearly two years and is currently the most popular selling stack on the Stacks4Stacks website. Version 1x is far behind and I know for sure its broken for some users.

A quite simply stunning theme that would be perfect for a professional photography portfolio, a fashion website, product showcases or even an innovative e-commerce site. The main focal point of this theme is the full screen background; which in itself forms much of the page.
